Abstract:
This paper evaluates the history and cycling accessibility of Nova, a shopping centre established in Lund, Sweden, in 2002. The current situation was also analysed through observation and a literature review. Moreover, the study conducted a closer analysis of the history and role of the municipality based on further literature study and interviews with officials. The conclusion of the analysis indicates poor and unsafe bikeways caused by conflicts of interest between politicians, officials, landowners and the general public. It also depicts a situation in which the municipality’s master plan has been ignored, and, in contrast to the local goals, cycling accessibility at Nova has seen no significant improvement since the shopping centre was first established. The reasons for this, arguably, are a relatively low budget for bikeway improvements in the municipality, as well as a situation in which decision-makers have stopped approaching the subject, as a result of the long and often boisterous conflicts it has created in the past. Lastly, it must be noted that it is easy to regard the whole process of Nova, from its establishment to the current situation, as being symptomatic of the power structures between drivers and cyclists that still affect decision-makers at all levels.

KJÆRANDSEN, JOSTEIN. "A review of fungus gnats in the tribe Exechiini (Diptera, Mycetophilidae) from the J. W. Zetterstedt collection at the Museum of Zoology in Lund, Sweden." Zootaxa 856, no. 1 (February 11, 2005): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.856.1.1.

Full text
Abstract:
The collections of fungus gnats by Johan Wilhelm Zetterstedt (1785–1874), lodged in the Museum of Zoology in Lund, Sweden, are examined for all species belonging in the tribe Exechiini Edwards. The majority of the material was collected in Fennoscandia, mainly in Sweden, in the first half of the 19 th century. Altogether 37 species of the tribe Exechiini could be safely identified. Three additional species are strongly indicated to be present in the collections, but could not be identified with certainty, viz. Allodia (Brachycampta) alternans (Zetterstedt, 1838), Cordyla murina Winnertz, 1863 and Stigmatomeria crassicornis (Stannius, 1831). Some of Zetterstedt's types have been erroneously synonymized and misinterpreted in modern literature. Hence, illustrations of terminalia are presented for all recognizable Exechiini types described by Zetterstedt. In order to preserve nomenclatural stability a lectotype is selected for Brevicornu griseolum (Zetterstedt, 1852) sensu auctore nec Edwards, and a neotype is selected for Allodia (Brachycampta) alternans (Zetterstedt, 1838). Two species names are reinstated, viz. Brevicornu canescens (Zetterstedt, 1852) sp. restit. stat. n. and Notolopha brachycera (Zetterstedt, 1838) sp. restit. stat. n. Two new synonyms are established, viz. Notolopha brachycera (Zetterstedt, 1838) = Allodiopsis (Notol- opha) tuomikoskii Zaitzev & Maximova, 2000 syn. n., and Brevicornu griseolum (Zetterstedt,1852) = Brevicornu boreale (Lundström, 1914) syn. n. All type specimens of Brevicornu fusculum (Zetterstedt, 1838) have lost their abdomens. No material of Exechia parvula (Zetterstedt, 1852) or Cordyla canescens Zetterstedt, 1852 could be located in the collections. Although the type material of Exechia parvula probably is lost, the name is still valid as a junior synonym for Mycetophila nana Staeger, 1840 since Mycetophila nana Staeger, 1840 is a junior primary homonym of Mycetophila nana Macquart, 1826. Cordyla canescens has been made a junior synonym for Stigmatomeria crassicornis (Stannius, 1831). The identity of Brevicornu fusculum is highly uncertain and the name must remain as a nomen dubium. Eleven species are reinstated or correctly reported from Sweden for the first time: Allodia (Allodia) tuomikoskii Hackman, 1971, Allodia (Allodia) zaitzevi Kurina, 1998, Allodiopsis rustica (Edwards, 1941), Brevicornu canescens (Zetterstedt, 1852), Brevicornu nigrofuscum (Lundström, 1909), Exechiopsis (Xenexechia) crucigera (Lundström, 1909), Pseudexechia aurivernica Chandler, 1978, Notolopha brachycera (Zetterstedt, 1852) Synplasta gracilis (Winnertz, 1863), Tarnania dziedzickii (Edwards, 1941), and Tarnania nemoralis (Edwards, 1941).

Stampoulidis, Georgios. "Stories of resistance in Greek street Art: A cognitive-semiotic approach." Public Journal of Semiotics 8, no. 2 (September 23, 2019): 29–48. http://dx.doi.org/10.37693/pjos.2018.8.19872.

Full text
Abstract:
In line with cognitive semiotics, this paper suggests a synthetic account of the important but controversial notion of narrative (in street art, and more generally): one that distinguishes between three levels: (a) narration, (b) underlying story, and (c) frame-setting. The narrative potential of street art has not yet been considerably studied in order to offer insights into how underlying stories may be reconstructed from the audience and how different semiotic systems contribute to this. The analysis is mainly based on three contemporary street artworks and two political cartoons from the 1940s, involving the same frame-setting, which may be labeled as “Greece vs. Powerful Enemy.” The study is built on fieldwork research that was carried out during several periods in central Athens since 2014. The qualitative analyses with the help of insights from phenomenology show that single static images do not narrate stories themselves (primary narrativity), but rather presuppose such stories, which they can prompt or trigger (secondary narrativity). Notably, the significance of sedimented socio-cultural experience, collective memory and contextual knowledge that the audience must recruit in order to reconstruct the narrative potential through the process of secondary narrativity is stressed. Author BiographyGeorgios Stampoulidis, Centre for Language and Literature, Division for Cognitive Semiotics, Lund University, Sweden Georgios Stampoulidis is a PhD candidate at the Division for Cognitive Semiotics at Lund University. His research interests are in the fields of polysemiotic communication and multimodality, narrative and metaphor, and urban creativity. His work focuses on street art as a cross-cultural medium of meaning-making, cultural production and political intervention in urban space, and thus, he has previously conducted fieldwork in Athens, Greece. His most recent publications are “A Cognitive Semiotic Exploration of Metaphors in Greek Street Art” (Cognitive Semiotics, 2019) and “Urban Creativity in Abandoned Places. Abstract:

Soderberg, Karen Amelia Phillips. "A survey of selected contemporary Swedish choral composers and literature." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185410.

Full text
Abstract:
This study presents a survey of selected Contemporary Swedish Choral Composers and Literature representative of the trends in contemporary Swedish choral music. The varied compositional styles and techniques of composers Sven-David Sandstrom, Thomas Jennefelt, Karin Rehnqvist and Andres Hillborg exemplify these trends. Little information is readily available about the current generation of choral composers outside of Sweden. Most of the available materials concentrate on the music of composers of the 1940s Monday Group such as Sven-Erik Back and Ingvar Lidholm and Karl-Birger Blomdahl, the works of Gunnar Bucht of the 1950s who reacted against modernism, the 1960s avant-garde styles of Bengt Hambraeus, Sigfriend Naumann, Arne Mellnas and Folke Rabe. This survey discusses the life, career and musical styles of each of the composers and analysis of an a cappella work illustrative of their musical styles. Fundamental to the growth and musical development of the representative composers is an examination of the historical background, foundation and tradition of choral singing in Sweden. The select bibliography, list of works by the composers, catalogs of choral music, list of institutions and organizations, and publishers, is intended to serve as a reference guide.

Abstract:
There is a great tendency in using literature as a medium of language teaching because literature plays an essential role in developing the students’ language skills. It also helps them in acquiring cultural experiences and to attain a better understanding of the literary texts. The Swedish National Agency for Education supports the inclusion of literature in English language classes in each of primary, secondary and even upper secondary schools. This research aims to examine the underlying reasons behind incorporating literature in teaching English, specifically in Swedish secondary schools grades 7-9, and it sheds light on how teachers manage to employ literature effectively in the classroom. Moreover, it explains the criteria behind selecting appropriate literary texts that suit students’ needs. The study also states some problems that may encounter teachers in adopting literature as a way of teaching. All these issues are discussed through conducting qualitative interviews with three English teachers. This study points out that literature has been used as a paramount tool for teaching English. By reading literary books, students’ knowledge about social and cultural issues is developed and their language skills also become better. Furthermore, teachers mention that there are several central criteria to note when using literature during the process of teaching literature, such as selecting literary materials with topics that students can find interesting to work with. Different kinds of tasks have been assigned to students to get the opportunity to describe, analyse and reflect upon what they worked with.  Some of the challenges identified by the teachers are lack of time and the students’ different skill levels. More studies are required regarding the efficacy of using literature as a helping educational tool in English language learning from students’ views, in particular considering individual and linguistic improvement.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study contributes to the emerging literature on the diffusion of SPC across social strata, by comparing two national contexts, Sweden and Spain, with different prevalence rates of SPC and with diverging social and gender policies in the early XXI century. We draw on the 2006 and 2014 comparative cross-sectional data from the Spanish and Swedish Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC), to test two competitive hypotheses (diffusion and diverging destinies hypotheses) on the association of parental socioeconomic status, children’s living arrangements in separated families and their relative prevalence in a populaiton. We also examine whether such association is modified by the great increase in SPC in both countries between 2006 and 2014. We present empirical evidence that, independently from the context, SPC arrangements are more frequent among parents with higher socioeconomic status and sole-custody arrangements among other parents; however, social inequality in post-separation arrangements differ in the two countries over time. In Spain, we find evidence in favour of the diffusion hypothesis with increases in the prevalence of SPC going hand in hand with the diffusion of SPC across social strata. By contrast, the Swedish data support the diverging destinies hypothesis with increases in SPC producing no variation in its social stratification over time.

The current article is aimed to outline a first review of the solid relationship of Claudio Magris with the Nordic world, both from the perspective of his reception in Denmark, Norway and Sweden and from the study of his fecund encounter with the works of authors like Henrik Ibsen, Knut Hamsun, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Jens Peter Jacobsen, Herman Bang and others. These authors, whose works were partially translated by Magris, eventually played a meaningful role in his own writing. Besides affirming himself as a relevant voice in the Scandinavian context, his work as a mediator for Nordic literature has made him a reference point for Scandinavian studies in our country.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Dutch Republic underwent a process of state formation, accelerated economic growth and military reforms during the Eighty Years War. In particular between 1585 and 1621, Dutch merchant-entrepreneurs built up a burgeoning arms industry and sector of arms exports. These exports required a system of passports, still an under-researched theme in current literature, organized by the States-General and admiralties in order to support exports to neutral and allied states, but to forestall these did not fall into enemy hands. In particular, the system of passports shows how merchants, acting as intermediaries between allies and the States-General and the admiralties, could meet the volatile demand of war materials. As a result, the supply side of the export market was oligopolistic, but the composition of the group of oligopolists varied depending on the region and the prevailing market conditions in question. From this study it can be concluded that the system of export control had only a limited effectiveness regarding the creative arms exports to Spanish Habsburg destinations, due to divergent central and local interests. However, the major part of the Dutch arms exports flowed to allies such as France, Venice, Sweden and the German protestant states. Dutch merchants provided them with batches of strategic materials and total package-deals of armaments for entire army and navy units. From 1621, the States-General supported these transactions by supplying war materials from the state arsenals fostering timely and largescale deliveries, meeting volatile demand conditions.

Abstract:
Although neurosurgery has a long history it was thanks to brave pioneering neurosurgeons such as Harvey Cushing in the United States — and in Sweden Herbert Olivecrona — that the speciality made huge progress during the first half of the 20th century. However, around 1950, the possibility to reveal pathological processes taking place inside the closed skull, was still very restricted. The only available rapid procedure was the neurological examination of the patient. X-ray of the skull is of restricted value, pneumo-encephalography was much too complicated and time-consuming for acute situations, and angiography was still in its infancy. Thus the neurosurgeon, receiving an acute patient with a suspected intracranial haematoma, had to make a qualified guess about where to start placing his trephine on the skull in order to save the life of the patient — often within minutes in the case of a bleeding between the skull bone and the dura. The mortality in those days was 40 % , often because the diagnosis was made too late. Thanks to an ingenious Swedish neurosurgeon, Lars Leksell, working at Lund University Hospital, a new approach to reveal the secrets inside the skull was introduced in clinical praxis — echoencephalography. Lars Leksell graduated from the Karolinska Institute (KI) and received his neurosurgical training in Herbert Olivecrona’s department from 1935. He volunteered as a neurosurgeon in the Finnish winter war in 1940 in Karelia. His team could operate on 24 head injuries per 24 hours and already by this point, Leksell showed his creative mind in constructing the double-action rongeur for more efficient removal of shell-splinters from the vicinity of the spinal cord. In 1941 he joined Professor Ragnar Granit (1967 Nobel laureate in Medicine) at the Institute of Neurophysiology where he presented his thesis on gamma nerve fibres in 1945. In 1946 he became the chief of the new neurosurgical unit in Lund and in 1958 he was appointed the first Professor of Neurosurgery at Lund University. In 1960 he succeeded Olivecrona as Professor and Chairman of the Neurosurgical Department at the Karolinska Institute/Hospital.

Abstract:
In the historical section of the monograph Ultrasound in Medical Diagnosis, published in 1976, one can read that a substantial part of the early development of the ultrasound-echo method took place in the little university town of Lund in Sweden. It is not without pride that the Lundensians Inge Edler and Hellmuth Hertz comment upon this in a later review article. They also describe what happened in Lund in the 1950s which they thought contributed in a decisive way to diagnostics in cardiology, neurosurgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology. Apart from the cardiologist Edler and the physicist Hertz the pioneers were the neurosurgeon Lars Leksell and the obstetrician Bertil Sundén. Hertz and his pupils were to a high degree responsible for the technical development and the application in all three specialities. During the late 1940s and the early 1950s surgery of the heart was started in Lund. The first common lesion to be corrected in adults was mitral stenosis. The valve was opened by forced dilatation. Results were often good but there was a diagnostic problem. In some patients the symptoms were not due simply to a small valve opening. There was also a leakage of blood ‘backwards’, mitral insufficiency. This condition of course could not be improved by such a primitive operation. Instead, the procedure might make the condition worse. There was thus a great need for improved diagnostics before operation. This was when the young internist Inge Edler entered the scene. Born in 1911 he had started his career in internal medicine in Malmö but in 1950 he moved to Lund where he became responsible for the preoperative heart evaluations. He immediately focused his interest on the possibilities of making a quantitative diagnosis of mitral stenosis and to determine the existence of mitral insufficiency. Edler’s nurse was married to a physicist, Jan Cederlund. Hence it was natural for Edler to ask Cederlund if the radar technique developed during world war II could be used for examination of the heart. Cederlund forwarded the question to his friend Hellmuth Hertz, also a physicist.

Abstract:
This paper examines the performance of gas turbine cycles operating with a mixture of air and water vapor. Special attention is paid to the humidification tower, where the water vapor is added to the air. The experiments in this study have been carried out in the first evaporative gas turbine pilot plant located at Lund Institute of Technology in the southern part of Sweden. This pilot plant is based on a Volvo VT600 gas turbine with a design load of 600 kW. The compressor pressure is just above 8 bars and the intake air-flow is 3.4 kg/s. Roughly 70 percent of the compressed air is humidified in the humidification tower, which is the only humidifying device. The tower diameter is 0.7 m and the total flexible packing height is 0.9 m of a stainless steel structured packing with a specific surface area of 240 m2/m3. The number of mass transfer units in the humidifier was experimentally determined to about 3 for a packing height of 0.45 m. The height of a transfer unit from the literature data for the packing is predicted to be 0.24 m. With a packing height of 0.45 m, only about 2 transfer units are expected from the packing. However, the droplet zones above and below the packing contribute about 1 transfer unit. Thus, it is concluded that the mass transfer performance of the packing is adequately predicted by literature data. Equations are provided to adjust the height of a transfer unit for other pressures and temperatures. For full-scale plants operating at higher pressures and temperatures it is suggested that the high quality exhaust heat, (temperatures above the boiling point) is recovered in a boiler and injected as steam. The remaining part of the exhaust heat, (temperatures below the boiling point) is used to produce hot water for a relatively small humidification tower using only a portion of the compressed air flow.
