Abstract:
Ability to duplicate an inspired volume level was studied in five healthy males using the psychophysical method of reproduction. Three conditions were evaluated in order to investigate the perceptual cues used for obtaining a specific inspired volume. Conditions were designed to progressively remove cues that might affect the subject's ability to duplicate an inspired lung volume. In each, the subject performed a standard inspiration, spanning from end expiratory position to 35% of inspiratory capacity. Patients with emphysema frequently complain of exertional dyspnoea despite maximal medical therapy. Destruction of the elastic tissue of the lung leads to enlargement of airspaces, small airway collapse, and progressive hyperinflation. This results in impaired respiratory mechanics and reduced inspiratory capacity, which together cause worsening dyspnoea and impaired exercise tolerance. Lung volume reduction surgery has been shown to improve lung function and exercise capacity in selected patients with upper lobe predominant emphysema by removing the most hyperexpanded areas of lung. A fairly large portion of patients receiving surgical or intensive care will need mechanical ventilation at some point. The potential ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) is thus of interest. One of the main causal factors in VILI is the cyclic energy shifts, i.e. tidal volumes, in the lung during mechanical ventilation. The problem can be approached in two ways. Firstly, one can utilize apneic oxygenation and thus not cause any tidal injuries at all. Secondly, and more traditionally, one can simply lower the tidal volumes and respiratory rates used.

Abstract:
Hyperpolarized 3Helium (HP 3He) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has provided considerable insights into the anatomical structures and localized physiological phenomenon involved in pulmonary ventilation. The increasing mortality rates of pulmonary diseases such as COPD, gives rise to the need for sensitive and regional assessments of early disease conditions in attempts to decrease mortality and improve lifestyles. Evaluation of the HP 3He MRI diffusion weighted measurements of lung microstructure, demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between microstructure expansion and degr

Abstract:
The primary aim of this Thesis is to further explore the relationship between respiratory muscle energetics and the O2 cost of strenuous exercise, as applied to healthy individuals and patients with Heart Failure (HF). A secondary aim was to develop an objective method of determining the gas-exchange and respiratory compensation thresholds during incremental cycling in young, healthy individuals. The results of the four Experiments conducted to achieve these aims are presented in this Thesis.
Thesis (PhD Doctorate)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Scienc

Abstract:

Iyer, Krishna S. "Dual energy CT based approach to assessing early pulmonary vascular dysfunction in smoking-associated inflammatory lung disease." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3112.

Abstract:
CT is a powerful method for noninvasive assessment of the lung. Advancements to CT technology have guided the high-resolution structural and functional assessment of lung diseases. This has helped make the transition from characterizing the severity of lung disease to novel phenotyping of disease subtypes. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a spectrum of inflammatory lung disease affecting lung parenchyma, airways, and the pulmonary and systemic vasculature. Quantitative CT-based measures have largely focused on quantifying the extent of airway and parenchymal damage with disease.

Hipervolemija značajno doprinosi njihovom nastanku, dovodeći do hipertenzije, hipertrofije miokarda leve komore, srčane insuficijencije i nastanka plućnog edema.
