Abstract:
The Luo are a Nilotic people living in western Kenya, north-eastern Tanzania and in western Uganda. Their language, Dholuo, forms part of the Western Nilotic group of languages. This article presents the traditional kincepts (kinship terminology) of the Luo people as described by elders living in Central Sakwa location, Siaya County, western part of Kenya. The kincepts for consanguine as well as affine relatives in up to three ascending and five descending generations are described. The paper applies a combined linguistic and anthropological approach. Linguistically, the terms are analysed in relation to current Dholuo vocabulary, grammar and modes of expression. Anthropologically, the Luo kinship rules of patrilineality and virilocality are considered. The domain of kincepts is a research field bringing together linguistics, anthropology and history. It contributes to the inquiry of diachronic linguistics, which can provide insights on the development and interaction of related languages as well as population groups’ migratory patterns not least in parts of the world where written historical sources are scarce.

Abstract Luo Lingyuan (<styled-content>)</styled-content> ist mit Abstand die bekannteste deutschsprachige Schriftstellerin chinesischer Abstammung. 1963 in der Provinz Jiangxi, Volksrepublik China, geboren, lebt Luo seit 1990 in Berlin, wo sie als Journalistin und Dolmetscherin tätig ist. Sie trat 2005 erstmals schriftstellerisch in Erscheinung und bis heute hat sie zwei Erzählbände1 sowie vier Romane2 publiziert. Für den Erzählband Du fliegst jetzt für meinen Sohn aus dem fünften Stock wurde Luo 2007 mit dem Adalbert-von-Chamisso-Förderpreis ausgezeichnet. Während der Erzählband Du fliegst jetzt für meinen Sohn aus dem fünften Stock und der Roman Die Sterne von Shenzhen sowohl die positiven Seiten als auch (und besonders) die negativen Seiten des wirtschaftlichen Booms in China thematisieren, richten ihre anderen Werke, deren Handlung sich vorwiegend in Deutschland aber auch in China abspielt, den Fokus auf kulturelle Begegnungen und Konflikte zwischen chinesischen und deutschen Protagonisten.

Abstract Languages play an essential role in China’s drive for modernization and in its interactions with the rest of the world. Discussions in this paper are designed to offer an overview of China’s language services, which have grown into a sizable industry with more than 70,000 businesses. In addition to its growth in size, the language services industry has also been a leader in introducing CAT technology in translation and adopting advanced technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, etc. Language service providers (LSPs) have also worked with institutions of higher learning in various forms of collaboration to provide internship opportunities to students of translation and other forms of support to universities. In order to promote the healthy development of the industry, the Translators Association of China (TAC) has done a huge amount of work in organizing industry efforts to develop guidelines for different kinds of language services, and help the industry to exercise self-regulation. This paper also discusses the challenges that the industry faces today and offers recommendations to the industry as it moves forward.

In this paper, I construct a linguistic framework for understanding contrasting conceptions of political contest. That framework is illustrated by applying it to the particular case of Luo of Kenya in the wider context of the country’s conflictual ethno-politics.The article, which rests on a conception of political contest as a structure of competition in which individuals and ethnic communities compete for political supremacy (over others, or at the expense of others), analyses selected instances of recent texts from online blogs, music and recorded public meetings. The article shows that, just like many other language communities, Luo key concepts and understandings emanate from its social and cultural institutions. Also, as those activities serve as source domains for other areas of social existence, including politics, the article argues that the conceptual metaphors deriving from frames such as POLITICAL CONTEST IS HUNTING/WAR/ WRESTLING/A FOOTBALL MATCH or POLITICAL CONTEST IS WOOING A WIFE are still common among the Luo today, even though some issues like hunting and war are no longer matters of everyday life. As the article argues, understanding the Luo Idealized Cognitive Models (ICMs) of political contest may be very useful in peace and conflict studies.

“On 4 November 1995 Kasabe existed; on 5 November it did not.” This brief obituary in David Crystal's book (p. 1) does not refer to a creature. It refers to an African language, known as Luo, that had been spoken in Cameroon; on the day in question, Bogon, the last speaker of Kasabe, died, taking his language with him. According to Crystal, half of the world's current languages are in danger of dying, and the situation is so grave that an international and interdisciplinary effort must be mounted to rescue them. Crystal has written this book to alert us to the peril and to suggest ways in which our linguistic diversity might be maintained.

Abstract:
This article examines the organisation of concepts of intelligence among the Luo people in rural Kenya. In particular, it discusses what the components of these concepts are; how these components are expressed in the DhoLuo language, how they are interrelated, how they are used in judgements of other people, and how these components of Luo conceptions of intelligence are related to Western conceptions of intelligence. Peer, teacher, and adult in the community ratings of children on Luo components of intelligence are correlated with performance on conventional ability tests and with school achievement. The Luo concept of intelligence is primarily expressed in the DhoLuo vocabulary by four concepts (rieko, luoro, paro, and winjo), which appear to form two latent structures, social-emotional competence and cognitive competence. Indicators of only one of these concepts (rieko) and only one latent structure (cognitive competence) correlate with scores on conventional Western cognitive ability tests and with school achievement in English and mathematics. The article also presents a novel method for analysing data from people’s ratings of each other’s intelligence that is useful when not every one who is providing the ratings knows everyone who is to be rated, and when Likert rating scales are inapplicable.

Pari, a Western Nilotic language, has a terraced-level tone system with total downstep. Although Pari could be analyzed as having three basic tone levels and automatic downstep, there is morphological evidence that it has two basic tone levels and non-automatic downstep. Furthermore, there is evidence that downstep is the manifestation of a floating high tone. Floating tones thus behave differently from tones of deleted vowels. In spite of many surface differences between Pari and Luo, a related language, a single tone change accounts for their underlying differences.

Abstract:
The region inhabited by the Luo ethnic group in Kenya is disease endemic. However, disease awareness initiatives register low acceptance due to the sociocultural images of disease and illness conceptualized in the local Dholuo language in ways that may contradict modern biomedical knowledge and practice. This article evaluates the sociocultural basis of encoding descriptions of disease in the Luo indigenous knowledge system and their implications for modern medical practice. The methodology entailed use of qualitative interviews of purposively sampled Dholuo-speaking patient escorts in a provincial referral hospital. Nonparticipant observation was also conducted at funerals to monitor contextualized usage of the discourse of disease, illness, and death. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis and categorized into emergent themes and categories. The results revealed that Dholuo is replete with expressions that emphasize the vulnerability and discrimination of the sick. Such attitudes cause rejection of interventions and negatively influence health-seeking behavior. The expressions were relevant and acceptable to cultural insiders; hence, they could determine their understanding of health conditions thereby influencing how they make medical decisions. It emerges that the unique Luo worldview controls their perceptions on the causes of disease and prescribes community-driven remedies which may depart from the expectations of the biomedical model.

La présente est une analyse des connecteurs du français et de la langue luo. Beaucoup d’études de ce genre ont été réalisées et se sont intéressées à la comparaison des connecteurs d’une langue européenne à une autre. Des études portant sur les comparaisons des connecteurs d’une langue européenne à une langue soit bantoue soit nilotique ou couchitique sont rares. Dans une situation de communication, les problèmes liés au vouloir-dire du locuteur retiennent particulièrement notre attention. La présente étude poursuit les objectifs suivants : faire connaître l’origine possible des connecteurs de la langue luo et analyser les similarités et les différences entre les connecteurs de la langue luo et du français quant à leur nature, leur distribution et leur effet de sens. L’étude est basée sur la théorie de l’argumentation d’Anscombre et Ducrot (1987). Une argumentation a lieu lorsque le locuteur présente un énoncé E1 ou un ensemble d’énoncés dans le but de faire admettre à son interlocuteur un autre énoncé E2 (ou une classe d'énoncés). En rapport avec les techniques de collecte de données, notre étude a eu recours à la recherche documentaire, suivie de l’ analyse approfondie des textes littéraires, une pièce de théâtre, des discours politiques et des textes argumentatifs rédigés par les étudiants de Maseno University et Moi University. La recherche prend en considération les correspondances des connecteurs d’addition, d’opposition, de concession, de cause, de conséquence et de temps, luo et français. Les données sont analysées qualitativement car une telle analyse met en relief une description détaillée de données. Nous espérons que les résultats de cette étude intéresseront à la fois les enseignants des langues et ceux de la traduction, ainsi que leurs étudiants, les chercheurs en général et ceux qui travaillent sur les langues africaines en particulier
This is an analysis of French and Luo sentence connectors. Comparative studies are commonly found between one European language and another. Research carried out on connectors of European and Bantu, Nilotic or Cushitic languages are rare. This thesis thus seeks to fill this knowledge gap. As revealed by literature review, European languages have a wide array of connecters that express different semantic values. If identifying and pegging particular semantic values to connectors of European language poses a challenge, it could be asserted that identifying those of African languages is even a more difficult task since African languages have a smaller number of connectors which could convey a bigger array of semantic value. The objectives of the study are: to determine the possible origin of Luo connectors and to analyze the similarities and differences of Luo and French connectors in terms of nature, distribution and semantic value of the connectors. The study is guided by the argumentative theory of Anscombre and Ducrot (1987). According to the theory, in a situation of argument, the locutor presents E1 in order to orient his interlocutor towards E2. The data collection techniques are grounded on library research as well as reading and analyzing of selected literary texts, a short play, political discourse and argumentative texts written by students from Maseno and Moi Universities. The research is limited to connectors of addition, opposition, concession, cause, consequence and of time, Data is analyzed qualitatively since qualitative analysis lays greater emphasis on holistic description of data. The research adopts a descriptive analysis design because it entails analyzing existing data sets. It is hoped that the results of this study will be vital to teachers of language, teachers of translation, students and to researchers who take interest in the Africans languages

Alors qu’un nombre croissant d’écrivains allochtones d’expression allemande avance de la périphérie au centre du champ littéraire allemand, les auteurs d’origine chinoise restent assez méconnus. En les présentant ici, nous souhaitons combler une lacune, notre propos se concentrant par ailleurs sur les œuvres de trois auteures : Luo Lingyuan (1963-), Xu Pei (1966-) et Lin Jun (1973-). Ces dernières ne publient que de la fiction : des nouvelles, des romans et de la poésie. Afin de clarifier les conditions dans lesquelles elles ont fait leur entrée sur la scène littéraire allemande, nous replaçons la littérature « chinoise » d’expression allemande dans son contexte d’émergence. Le rappel de l’historique des relations germano-chinoises depuis la période coloniale jusqu’à aujourd’hui précède ainsi un retour sur l’histoire de la littérature d’expression allemande depuis les années 1970. Mobilisant le concept d’« existence diasporique », qui explicite le mouvement permanent que les auteures opèrent entre les cultures et les langues chinoise et allemande, l’objectif de cette étude est de proposer une première analyse littéraire interne de leurs textes, dont le caractère transculturel est illustré à travers trois enjeux : temporel, spatial et identitaire. Par le détour de la confrontation directe et croisée avec les œuvres, qui problématisent le caractère transnational, transculturel et plurilingue des sujets en diaspora, nous interrogeons finalement la conception monoculturelle et monolingue de l’identité d’une part et de la littérature dite « allemande » d’autre part, dont nous montrons qu’elle se nourrit d’influences culturelles diverses et dépasse l’horizon national
While an increasing number of foreign-born writers using German are leaving the fringes of the German literary scene and gaining prominence, authors of Chinese origin are still relatively unknown. We endeavour to fill this gap with a focus on the works of three of them: Luo Lingyuan (1963-), Xu Pei (1966-) and Lin Jun (1973-). Their publications are exclusively fictional: short-stories, novels and poetry. In order to highlight the conditions in which they entered the German literary scene, we place the literature written by Chinese in German in its context of emergence. We first present the history of Sino-German relations from the colonial period until today. Then, we describe the evolution of the literature written in German language since the 1970s. Using the concept of “diasporic existence”, which describes the authors’ constant back and forth movement between the Chinese and German cultures and languages, the aim of this study is to offer an initial internal literary analysis of the texts. Our ambition is to show their transcultural character in the light of three notions: time, space and identity. Through a direct and cross-cutting confrontation with these literary works that problematise the transnational, transcultural and multilingual quality of diasporic subjects, we finally question the monocultural and monolingual conception of identity on the one hand, and of the so-called “German” literature on the other, by pointing to the fact that the latter is impacted by diverse cultural influences and therefore exceeds the limits of the national horizon

COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR
O Common Language Runtime (CLR) é uma plataforma criada com o objetivo de facilitar a interoperabilidade entre diferentes linguagens de programação, através de uma linguagem intermediária (a Common Intermediate Language, ou CIL) e um sistema de tipos comum (o Common Type System, ou CTS). Lua é uma linguagem de script flexível e de sintaxe simples; linguagens de script são frequentemente usadas para juntar componentes escritos em outras linguagens, para construir protótipos de aplicações, e em arquivos de configuração. Este trabalho apresenta duas abordagens de integração entre a linguagem Lua e o CLR, com o objetivo de permitir que scripts Lua instanciem e usem componentes escritos para o CLR. A primeira abordagem é a de criar uma ponte entre o interpretador Lua e o CLR, sem modificar o interpretador. Os recursos e a implementação desta ponte são mostrados, e ela é comparada com trabalhos que seguem a mesma abordagem. A segunda abordagem é a de compilar as instruções da máquina virtual do interpretador Lua para instruções da Common Intermediate Language Do CLR, sem introduzir mudanças na linguagem Lua. A implementação de um compilador de instruções Lua para CIL é mostrada, e o desempenho de scripts compilados por ele é comparado com o desempenho dos mesmos scripts executados pelo interpretador Lua e com o de scripts equivalentes compilados por outros compiladores de linguagens de script para o CLR.
The Common Language Runtime (CLR) is a platform that aims to make the interoperability among different programming languages easier, by using a common language (the Common Intermediate Language, or CIL) and a common type system (the Common Type System, or CTS). Lua is a flexible scripting language with a simple syntax; scripting languages are frequently used to join components written in other languages, to build application prototypes, and in configuration files. This work presents two approachs for integratiion between the Lua language and the CLR, with the objective of allowing Lua scripts to instantiate and use components written for the CLR. The first approach is to create a bridge between the Lua interpreter and the CLR, without changing the interpreter. The features and implementation of this bridge are shown, and it is compared with other work following the same approach. The second approach is to compile the virtual-machine instructions of the Lua interpreter to instructions of the CLR s Common Intermediate Language, without introducing changes to the Lua language. The implementation of a Lua instructions to CIL compiler is shown, and the performance of scripts compiled by it is compared with the performance of the same scripts run by the Lua interpreter and with the performance of equivalent scripts compiled by compilers of other scripting language to the CLR.

Children and teenagers aged 8 to 18 years old spend an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes a day on-line. If millions of people are already spending many hours a day on these sites, it seems reasonable to take advantage of them and use these sites for more than just conversation and networking. This thesis provides educators the theoretical basis to choose and implement the best and most appropriate web tools in their language classrooms. It reviews some of the second language acquisition theories that can aid in the creation of a computer assisted language learning (CALL) environment that delivers benefits, and follows the standards set by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). This thesis also provides a comprehensive check list of theoretical and technical requirements in order to choose an internet tool, as well as examples on its use. This thesis concludes with the fact that implementing Web 2.0 tools in classrooms should be done with a clear objective in mind in order so there are meaningful and authentic learning opportunities that will provide students new cultural, social and linguistic knowledge.

In the present case study, we will explore the creation of a small personal LTO, named NSPLlab, and the prospects of its development through the lenses of Strategic Marketing (SM) after having reviewed the existing literature. In the modern world, the creation of a business entails a thorough consideration of several factors for the venture at hand to be seen as successful. At the same time, the educational aspect of the business can possibly cause a series of strategic alterations to the various existing managerial models and theories along with any practices used in a business framework. The integration of SM in the organisational effectiveness of an LTO could provide valuable insight for any LTO stakeholder, as well as contribute to the already established knowledge by the research conducted in the fields of SM strategies focusing on the development and operation of an LTO. The study aims mainly to constitute a comprehensive analysis of the operational parameters of such a business, while creating a healthily run educational entity and developing a lifelong educational culture to the customers-students. Having under scrupulous investigation the challenges faced by the managerial authority and the values at stake, in order to provide a model designed based on the idea of ethical leadership, we will try to give a possible plan or, in other words, a list of tips for any stakeholder to utilize while aiming to successful development not only of the LTO as a business venture itself, but also of a supportive and engaging environment in which the manager and any staff employed in the future in the LTO could thrive.

This chapter takes the reader on a guided tour through the map production process, offering an overview of the cartographic language, the rules and practices that contribute to the success of the map as a communication tool and the most common forms in which LUC maps appear. In this paper we discuss the use of a dynamic approach to combine components and aspects in order to form a CORBA-based application. We use AspectLua, an extension of an interpreted and dynamically typed language – Lua, which supports aspect-oriented programming. We describe the use of AspectLua in the context of a CORBA-based environment. AspectLua explores the reflexive features of Lua and the powerful of its small syntax and allows the dynamic definition of aspects and it also offers support for dynamic weaving. The difference of AspectLua to the traditional aspect-oriented languages is the fact of being interpreted and dynamically typed – this allows the insertion/removal of components and aspects in an application at runtime.

Due to the cultural specificity and variation of emotions, it is important to study them in different languages, cultures and contexts. The aim of the study is to summarize the most widespread words of emotions in the Latvian language, to map them in the dimensions of valence and activation, and to link them with the self-assessment indicators of bodily senses such as valence and activation. The results point to sometimes consistent assessments of emotions in senses, dimensions and words in the Latvian language, as well as perspectives in further research with implications for improving various affective computing and sentiment analysis technologies.

The article analyzes the diaries of Leo Tolstoy and his work “What is Art?” from the perspective of cognitive hermeneutics. The study focuses on Tolstoy’s value judgments about art, including music. It reveals that Leo Tolstoy constructs a hierarchy of criteria for the artistic value of art, such as emotional influence and power to evoke emotional response, accessibility of artistic language, and, last but not least, quality of the content regarding the objective and ontological nature of art. The study also finds out the similarities between the phenomenological reflection of Tolstoy’s perception of music (music as recollection) and Plato’s philosophical views on the nature of the soul (“Phaedrus”). Tolstoy’s value judgments about music and the specifics of his perception and experience of music correlate with his capacity for immediate emotional and reflexive perception.

In this paper we describe how the language skill of listening is operationalized and measured on the Duolingo English Test (DET). This work is situated in the DET’s theoretical assessment ecosystem (Burstein et al., 2022), a set of evidence-based frameworks that reflect the iterative processes for assessment design, computational psychometrics, and test security. In this ecosystem, the Language Assessment Design Framework stipulates that the domain for tested constructs be described. To achieve this goal, the present paper is one in an ongoing series of skills construct whitepapers that describes the underpinnings for each language skill construct, in this case for listening (see also Park et al., 2022 for reading; Goodwin et al., 2022 for writing; LaFlair et al., 2023 for interactional competence; Park et al., 2023 for speaking). The paper first gives background information on the DET. We then describe the DET’s conceptualization of the second language listening construct using the multi-layered framework of Aryadoust and Luo (2023). Within this framework, we consider how subskills, cognitive processes, attributes (i.e., task and test-taker traits) contribute to the overall listening construct. We also exemplify how these different elements of listening are measured through the DET item types.

The Government of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is undertaking significant primary education reforms, supported by the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through its flagship Basic Education Quality and Access in Laos program (BEQUAL). The Australian Government has commissioned a study to investigate how the BEQUAL program is making a difference to improving teaching quality and student learning outcomes. This research is part of a multi-year study series undertaken by DFAT's Education Analytics Service to investigate teacher and learning development initiatives in three countries: Lao PDR, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu. In 2019, the new curriculum for Lao language and other subjects was introduced for Grade 1 and is being phased in across all five primary grades. The new curriculum promotes teaching practices that support pedagogies focused on student-centred approaches, active learning, assessment of student learning progress, and a phonics approach to teaching reading. Teachers are being provided with teacher guides and other teaching and learning resources, and receive face-to-face orientation on the new curriculum. In BEQUAL-targeted districts, education support grants are also available to facilitate additional in-service support for teachers and principals. This study has provided the opportunity to investigate teaching quality and student literacy outcomes in Lao PDR over two rounds of data collection, with another planned for October 2022. The Baseline Report captured ‘state of play’ information in 2019 prior to major curriculum changes, as well as the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This summary provides an overview of findings and recommendations from the second year (2021) of the study, following two years of BEQUAL support for the implementation of the new Grade 1 Lao language curriculum.

Condition being studied: Adults (as defined by the authors) with any of the following inoperable or metastatic SSTR-positive NETs: PPGL, thymic NET, bronchial NET, NET of unknown primary origin, or MTC. Efficacy and safety outcomes were analyzed. Eligibility criteria: Search included studies published up to May 13, 2021. No geographic, language, or age restrictions were applied in the search, but only English-language publications reporting studies in adults were selected for inclusion. Studies that included multiple NET types were only included if the results and baseline characteristics were provided for individual NETs. Studies that included both pediatric and adult patients were retained, if it was possible to extract data for adults only.

Since 2016, a new primary education curriculum has been introduced by stages, accompanied by a suite of in-service teacher training. The new curriculum promotes teaching practices that support new pedagogies focused on student-centred learning and community support, language transition and class-based assessment practices. These reforms are being supported by the Australian Government, through its Vanuatu Education Support Program (VESP). Por lo tanto, como marco de referencia la Matemática que se ha venido planteando ha pasado por una transición de contenidos rígidos hacia una flexibilización didáctica del contenido, sin perder el horizonte académico y los procesos pedagógicos que deben estar presentes en la generación de aprendizajes en el aula. La construcción de un currículo en Matemática se encuentra ligado al conocimiento del contexto, los actores y los actos educativos, en donde se deben dimensionar las necesidades del escenario educativo, con el fin de plantear un currículo diverso e innovador, que se encuentra relacionado con las necesidades de vincular a la enseñanza de la Matemática, todas las técnicas y métodos precisos, que les permitan a los estudiantes generar un proceso de conocimiento aplicado a las ciencias del conocimiento.
