Abstract:
Augsburg, a free imperial city of about 30. 000 inhabitants, was unique in germany between 1648 and 1806 in two ways: its population was almost equally distributed between lutherans and catholics and the two communities, thanks to the constitutionnal "parity", enjoyed perfect equality. The thesis seeks to answer two questions: in what ways did lutherans and catholics differ from each other ? how did they coexist and what were the repercussions on the identity of the two communities ? the first part is dedicated to demographic aspects. It traces the great lines of the demographic evolution of augsburg, analyzes the differences in the dynamism of the two communities, insists on the contrast in their migratory patterns and finally deals with areas unaffected by confessionnal distinctions. The second part treats economic and social aspects. After having outlined the structures of the urban economy and society, it analyzes statiscally the characteristics of the two communities (professions, wealth) and their development. These analyses have been completed by means of case studies observing the forms of confessionnal coexistence in four areas: domesticity, journeymenship, banking and commerce, arts crafts. These analyses emphasise how the interests of the two communities were complementary and intertwined. The last part is dedicated to aspects of mentality. It demonstrates the attempts by each community to preserve and consolidate its identity (controversies, commemorations) without endangering civil order; it pursues the internalization of confessionnal differences by means of several indicators (first names, outward signs of distinction); finally it analyzes the two majors "tabus" which best express the reality of the "invisible dividing line": the rejection of miexd marriages and of conversions. The conclusion attempts to evaluate in what ways augsburg was representative in the context of modern germany

Strasbourg 2, 1986. http://www.theses.fr/1986STR20001.

Full text
Abstract:
In the 16th century, the different understandings of salvation in jesus christ lead to the division of the western church. After more than four centuries of division, these same churches are now involved in the ecumenical movement, the aim of which is the reconciliation of the churches. Is there an agreement on the question of salvation today? the first part of this study is devoted to the dialogue between roman catholics and lutherans, opposition on this question having been particularly animated between luther and the roman church. There seems to be a general consensus in the understanding of salvation, but which has not yet been fully translated at the ecclesiological level. Differences remain regarding eucharist and ministry. These differences represent different conceptions of the church, of its nature and in particular its instrumentality as god's cooperator in the salvation of men. This fundamental difference should, however, not retain its divisive character. Under certain circumstances, this difference could be regarded as an expression of a legitimate diversity. The second part examines the contribution of numerous dialogues with other churches (anglican, reformed, orthodox. . . ). These dialogues confirm the theses of a fundamental difference in the understanding of the church and of its instrumentality. This question does not separate the reformation churches but remains open in the dialogues of these churches with the roman catholic church

van, Voorhis Daniel R. "A prophet of interior Lutheranism : the correspondence of Johann Arndt." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/517.

Full text
Abstract:
For over four hundred years historians and theologians have been unable to come to a consensus as to where Johann Arndt (1555-1621) fits on the spectrum of orthodoxy in the Lutheran church, what age he best represented, and how he should be understood. Arndt has been credited with reviving medieval mysticism, as being a subversive innovator within the Lutheran church, and as being the father of Pietism. All of this confusion seems to come from the variegated nature of his work. Arndt was willing and able to borrow from a variety of traditions as he sought to revive the church of the Reformation on the eve of the Thirty Years’ War. This work is an investigation into the private world of Arndt through his correspondence as he wrote to individuals with varying theological temperaments. In a sense this thesis follows the pioneering work of Friedrich Arndt, who attempted in 1838 to investigate Arndt’s self-understanding on the basis of his correspondence; his work, however, was severely limited by the fact that only ten letters were known at the time. The Verzeichnis der gedruckten Briefe deutscher Autoren des 17. Jahrhunderts published in 2002 listed twenty-three known letters of Arndt. For my research and using the footnotes and appendices of secondary literature on Arndt and with help from the Forschungsbibliothek in Gotha, I have collected fifty-two letters written by Arndt. This work is the first to treat the letters exhaustively and proposes to present a fuller biographical picture of Arndt and to explore his self-understanding as a prophet of spiritual renewal in the Lutheran church.

Dieffenbach, Jennifer Elizabeth. "Passion meditation in early eighteenth century Lutheranism : J.S. Bach's Cantata texts in dialogue with theology." Thesis, Queen's University Belfast, 2017. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.725830.

Full text
Abstract:
Bach’s Passiontide Cantatas do not exist in a vacuum but rather were created in a context that has long been under appreciated. Since Passion motifs appear throughout Bach’s own library, found in the sermons, hymnals and commentaries he seemed to value so greatly, they, (among other contemporary devotional materials) offer a great wealth of information. These sources demonstrate a culture rich in Passion motifs, a realm of information virtually untouched in the the Bach research world. They also identify two distinct types of Passion meditation that Bach seems to have appreciated. It becomes evident that Bach not only adopted but also adapted these Passions themes through the musical out workings of the Passion texts he set. Thus the liturgical and rhetorical interplay between Cantatas and the Passion tradition at large proves to be a catalyst, unlocking not only a deeper understanding of Bach's compositional choices, but the future of a new type of research, that of inter-genre contextualization. Through a textual/rhetorical analysis of representative Passiontide Cantatas in partnership with a contextual analysis of contemporary literary sources, Bach’s Cantatas find their own place at the peak of a Passion tradition and as musical monuments in their own right. By locating Bach’s Passions within a constellation, his musical choices, liturgical placement, and development as a composer and individual become a bit clearer.

Yoder, Peter James. "Blood, spit, and tears: August Hermann Francke's theology of the sacraments." Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6668.

Full text
Abstract:
August Hermann Francke (1663-1727), the disciple of Philipp Jakob Spener and famous Halle Pietist, embraced a comprehensive worldview that combined theology, politics, and social life. The work of his Stiftungen (Foundations), which he established in Glaucha near Halle/Saale, permeated all levels of society with Pietist ideas--from wealthy nobility to poor orphans. With pastors trained by him venturing to England and the American colonies, the work of Francke's ministry would come to have a transatlantic influence. This study focuses on Francke's theology of the sacraments and his attempts to articulate his form of Pietism through the rituals of baptism and the Lord's Supper. These two sacraments played a central role in the religious activity of the Lutheran church, and we suggest that Francke's own sermons and writings on baptism and the Eucharist provide a rich source for understanding how his form of churchly Pietism informed and deviated from traditional Lutheran teachings. Thus this dissertation addresses two important areas of Pietism studies: 1) it provides a source-based introduction to Francke's theology of the sacraments and 2) it examines the ways in which Francke conflicted with Lutheran Orthodoxy. After a historical contextualization of Francke's rise to the status of a dangerous theologian in the eyes of the leaders of Lutheran Orthodoxy, this study considers how Francke addressed what he believed to be the important features of the sacraments. We evaluate the themes of the Taufbund (baptismal covenant) and worthiness at the Supper that consistently appear in his discussions of the sacraments. Furthermore we examine the influence such figures as Johann Arndt, Theophil Großgebauer, Lewis Bayly, and Miguel de Molinos had on Francke's thought. We argue that these religious figures, among others, played an important role in the appearance of Reformed and mystical ideas in the Glaucha pastor's theology. We consider the way he approached sacramental oaths, rebirth, exorcism, confession, and the Christian life in relation to baptism and the Eucharist. Therefore, this study provides a detailed look at the shape and content of August Hermann Francke's Pietist theology.

Schofield, John. "The lost Reformation : why Lutheranism failed in England during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/596.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the reasons why England became Reformed rather than Lutheran at the Reformation. When King Henry divorced his Catholic Queen, Catherine of Aragon, and defied the Roman See, Lutheranism seemed the natural religion for his realm. Henry authorised and supported dialogue with the Germans, hoping for a religious and political settlement, and the Lutheran message was winning English converts. Yet despite all this, both Henry and his son Edward rejected Lutheranism, though for widely different reasons. The thesis focuses on the religious beliefs and motives of Henry and his chief minister Thomas Cromwell, and studies the religious legislation of Henry's reign. It seeks to explain why, after an apparently promising start, Henry's Lutheran policy first stalled then suddenly collapsed. It also compares the English experience with that in Germany and Scandinavia, where Lutheranism succeeded. Finally it considers why the religious settlement of Edward VI, though owing much to Luther, was nonetheless decisively Reformed.

Abstract:
O tema desta pesquisa abrange a penetração e a repressão inquisitorial portuguesa à chamada heresia luterana.
The issue of this research covers Portuguese penetration and inquisitional repression to the so-called Lutheran heresy. Before any comment, it is necessary to say the term Lutheran at the Modern age was used by inquisitors as a generic term to identify protestant foreigners. It is an unpublished and original issue among historical researches specialized in Inquisition, focusing the inquisitional processes of the Lisboeta Saint Services against defendants in Brazilian lands. It deals of an investigation concerning introduction and diffusion of Lutheranism in Colonial Brazil between the 16th and 17th centuries. Processes of the Portuguese Inquisition are the most prominent primary sources in this Dissertation. Besides, there are administrative and juridical documents which improve the issue exploitation. Lutheranism in Colonial Brazil presented many faces: since the ships Lutheranism, when Portuguese expanded off shore and were taken by French and English Lutherans to the land Lutheranism with its conflicts and colonial wars. Also presenting that Lutheranism for free adhesion. The pursued and sued crime by the Portuguese Inquisition Trial in Brazil was a Lutheranism articulated with deep social, political and cultural changes in Modern Europe and with the singularities of colonial society.

Religious mobility is a recent phenomenon and has become one of the main factors which modify the Brazilian religious field, which can be characterized by a scenario of religious diversification and pluralism. In modernity, the modifications in the field produce new configurations of religion, of believing and of belonging. The traditional churches are reached by these movements, especially in the urban areas. In this sense, this theses deals with the adhesion to the Igreja Evangélica de Confissão Luterana no Brasil (IECLB) [Evangelical Church of Lutheran Confession in Brazil] in urban congregations, through an empirical-qualitative research which addresses the religious journeys and modalities of belonging and joining in three congregations which served as a case study. Besides the religious journeys, we sought to decipher the motivations, the levels of participation and integration, the exclusive or twofold relation with the chosen religious community. We problematized the phenomenon of religious migration through concepts such as conversion, passage or joining, in a religious field in which adhesion by attribution loses space to acquired adhesion. The survey of data points to religious mobility which propitiates different modalities of aggregation and belonging comprehended by the new religious identity, revealing adhesions by family (Sapucaia do Sul/RS), by individuals (São Luís/MA), or momentary, partial and mobile (Rio de Janeiro/RJ). We identified that the religious migration and adhesion, in these congregations, through family or personal choice, reveal that the transmitter element of religion no longer occurs through symbolic ties, such as tradition and ethnicity, which reveals a church which, slowly, is changing, in the Brazilian context, substituting these traditional elements of adhesion with theological and confessional ones, for an open and universal ecclesial proposal. In this sense, based on the case studies, we list challenges and opportunities for urban congregations of the IECLB, which, upon receiving persons with dynamic and accentuated religious journeys, becomes a chosen religious space for living out the faith.

This dissertation analyses the Church s political influence on the State, a controversial topic with roots of great depth in history, especially in the period when the States were being formed, when the Church had many riches and power and dominion over education, affecting the political basis and infiltrating the civil authorities. Therefore, this study s goal is to provide a general look of how the Protestant Reformation influenced the politics, specifically in Germany and in its late unification process; and to understand how the Church s division, starting with the Protestant Reformation, generated consequences in the political world. In order to analyze the role of Protestantism in the formation of the German nation, the Catholic Church s history was analyzed, showing its evolution and how in the medieval period, it became an independent and autonomous institution, that possessed many lands, riches and the monopoly of knowledge. An institution capable of exercising great political and social influence in the people and in the civil authorities. This research is organized around the question: is there in fact a real influence of Protestantism in the formation of the German nation? Based on historical and theological arguments, the suggested hypothesis is that the Protestantism influenced the formation of the modern political thought, more specifically in the formation of the concept of German nation, given the verifications as: the real power the Catholic Church had over the government of the European territories, influence that was extended to Lutheranism in Christianity s division, especially when it was used by princes who sought regional autonomy, which led to the strengthening of the internal segregation of the territories that would come to constitute Germany.

This research aims to weave a historiographic study about the process of construction of Ressurreição Evangelical Lutheran Community, located in the city of Imbituva, in South-Central Paraná state. Between the tensioned forces of aggregation and dispersion, this text has as objective to identify the ethnic elements (belonging to the "Volga germans" immigrants and their respective descendants) and religious (from lutheran prothestantism) and to investigate the relations of these elements with the impact of political practices on the context of Getúlio Vargas government in Brazil, especially during the period of "New State" (from 1937 to 1945) that contributed to the construction of the identity of the Lutheran Community of Imbituva-PR. The migration movement and the establishment of this ethnic and ecclesiastical group produced tensions and conflicts in the receiver society in order to cause significant changes, as resistences, creation of borders, otherness, assimilation, hybridization, in the life of the own immigrants on this new context. Ethnicity and religiosity configure categories of analysis relevant to the understanding of aspects concerning to the historicity of identitary settings in this social group.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 126-137.
This study defends the thesis that the present social location of the Lutheran churches can be explained by examining the history of their internal divisions and their relation to broader struggles in society. The history of the Lutheran missions and churches is considered in relation to the political and socio-economic dimensions of South African history. Church history is conceived as an internal struggle between a dominant and an alternative theology (and their respective ecclesial bases), which affects the participation of the churches in broader social struggles. The development of the churches is divided into three periods, corresponding to the growing independence of the black churches from the mission societies. The thesis is examined by extensive reference to primary and secondary sources on the Lutheran church. Interviews with key informants from the various missions and churches provide additional information. The broader field of church historiography, as well as theoretical writings on church history are considered. The analytical aim of the thesis is to show how· the struggles internal to the Lutheran churches - including struggles around theological issues - have affected their ability to participate in the broader struggle for liberation in South Africa. In addition to this analytical aim, the thesis provides a narrative history of Lutheranism in South Africa. The findings of the thesis are that white Lutherans have been the dominant group in the Lutheran churches throughout their history in South Africa. White Lutherans produced the dominant theology of all the Lutheran churches for most of the history of Lutheranism in South Africa. This dominance of German-Lutheran theology was established in the missionary period. The social base of the missions was the German farming community. This community broadly formed part of the ruling classes of colonial society, and its interests converged at many points with colonialism. Lutherans were not allied to the dominant colonial power, the British, but from the end of the nineteenth century to the Boers. Their theological self-understanding as Lutherans, with their specific missiology, ecclesiology and doctrines (e.g. the Two Kingdoms Doctrine) gave them an identity distinct from others in the ruling bloc. This theology was the dominant theology of all Lutheran churches, black and white. This theological self-understanding, however, gave them only limited autonomy. They conformed to dominant values by dividing along racial lines. This dominant ecclesiology had its effect beyond the missionary period, and resulted in the separate development of black and white Lutheran churches. Although the black churches gained more independence through the formation of synods and later regional churches, they have internalized to some degree the dominant theology taught by the missionaries. The internal divisions within Lutheranism have continued to prevent effective engagement in external struggles for justice. Yet in the course of struggles for unity and a more effective political witness, an alternative Lutheran theology and ecclesiology has emerged, mainly among young black pastors and church members, but also among some white Lutherans. It is among these people that a Lutheran tradition of resistance to apartheid in church and society can be discovered. It is here that the hope of the church is found.

Abstract:
This study explores the role of design as a force that may stabilise cultural identity in a cultural climate of globalisation through the use of visual rhetoric and narrative. It focuses specifically on the heritage and face of a German culture in South Africa. Objects that are found amongst the South African German community are analysed in an attempt to uncover the rhetoric and narrative of the culture’s heritage in a country far removed from their Heimat. The study deals with terms such as Sehnsucht and belonging, of maintaining a sense of cultural difference while being integrated and socially accepted. It uses visual rhetoric as a means to discover elements that may be used by design in order to adequately represent the Germanness of the South African German community in a way that it can be maintained in today’s way of life.

Abstract:
This essay is firstly a study of the early modern period in Sweden regarding questions of religion. Secondly the essay intents to interpret these religious questions with the help of theories surrounding Norbert Elias civilizing process. The main purpose of this essay is to examine the religious transformation-event that took place in Sweden during the the late 16th century where the archbishop of Uppsala Abraham Angermannus through an inquisitional inspection journey – or so called “räfst” – sought to punish the sinners of the kingdom. Furthermore the aim is to analyze and discuss this religious happening through what has been said in the Swedish historical field of research. The source material of the study is the court journal that compiles almost every case of the inspection journey in some some detail. Here demarcations are made where the study tend to focus on cases pertaining religious questions, Catholicism, magic and witchcraft. In conclusion I here argue that the purpose of the inspection journey, that was instigated on the behest of duke Charles, was the cessation of the apocalypse. Therfore all crimes that had any connection with Catholicism and non-Lutheran creeds, manners and faiths were looked upon with harshness and were further on bundled together and labled as witchcraft or black art. From the civilizing perspective I moreover claim that the inspection journey sometimes could have had the support of the people and that it was not only a project designed by and for the authorities needs. Therfore the study tend to lean more against a supporting of the development theory rather than that of the intervention theory. This in spite of the later criticism that was aimed against the archbishop and his inspection journey.

This research intends to analyze O Pequeno Luterano, a printout produced with clear educational purposes and explicit doctrinaire perspective, constituting itself as one of the main pedagogical vehicles used by the Missouri Synod (Brazils Lutheran Church nowadays), in the period between 1930 and 1960. The periodical was characterized as an undertaking assigned to children aiming the formation of the future adult believer and gained great repercussion where it circulated. This study comprehends the periodical circulation in the southern area of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and takes support on testimonies and printed documents, especially the group of periodicals available to reading in different documentary collections, totalizing nearly 2.339 pages. The data analysis is supported on theoretical referentials of two authors: Roger Chartier regarding the printout appropriation, production and circulation and Michel de Certeau, considering the concepts of strategies (editors undertaking) and tactics (different ways of how readers borrow the propositions set by the editors). The operational procedure used consisted in process the content of each periodical and transfer it to a database adapted from a software originally created for other purposes. In this adaptation, it was constituted unities and sub unities of analysis. This research also relies on the memories of the subjects involved with the periodical during the period investigated. These testimonies were very useful to answer the original questions which started the investigation as well as those which emerged along the investigative path. Among the conclusions, its important to emphasize that the printout reinforced its legitimation by adopting the parochial school (and later, the Sunday school) locus, as well by proposing creative strategies planned and fulfilled in each period. Although religious and doctrinaire contents overlapped ludic contents, the ludic contents constituted fundamental strategies to gain readers, especially by placing readers in interaction with the periodical and/or with other readers. The group of data also allows to set conclusions on the efficient periodical use in the formal education processes, not as planned didatic material, but as a reading vehicle, permanently legitimated by the respective priests and teachers. Though the readers escaping tactics ? such as not making use of the content according to the editors expectations ? its possible to affirm that in a general way the periodical project was accomplished. Also it was verified on the collected testiomonies that until today many readers continue reading the material produced and/or recommended by the Synod.

For Søren Kierkegaard, life demands the encounter of a truth one can live and die for. According to him, the objective uncertainty, sustained by the appropriation of the most passionate inwardness, is the truth, the highest existent truth for a person. This definition of truth as subjectivity is also a paraphrase of faith. For the philosopher of religion, the truth of Christianity does not lie in the objectification of doctrines, but in the appropriation of its paradox(es) with the passion of inwardness; In the leap of faith. Religious truth, essentially subjective, is only effectively communicated indirectly; by and for the free individual in their existence. Often, however, religious truth is transformed into absolute, objective truth. This is what happens in religious institutions like the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil, where the idea of proclamation is based on the premise that the error has to be corrected and the truth proclaimed. This reality, clearly observed in the media communication, reveals a strong tendency towards rationalization of faith at the expense of the subjectivity of the existing person in search of ultimate meaning.

Abstract:
Early modern Lutherans, as is well known, worshipped in decorated churches. They adopted a path of reform that neither disposed of all ornament nor retained all the material trappings of the Catholic church. This thesis studies the fortunes of ecclesiastical art in the Duchy of Württemberg after its Reformation in 1534 and the place images found for themselves in the devotional lives of Lutherans up to c. 1700. The territory was shaped not just by Lutheranism, but initially by Zwinglianism too. The early years of reform thus saw moments of iconoclasm. The Zwinglian influence was responsible for a simple liturgy that distinguished Württemberg Lutheranism from its confessional allies in the north. This study considers the variety of uses to which Lutheran art was put in this context. It addresses the different ways in which Lutherans used the visual setting of the church to define their relationships with their God, their church, and each other. The Dukes of Württemberg used their stance on images to communicate their political and confessional allegiances; pastors used images to define the parameters of worship and of the church space itself; parishioners used images, funerary monuments, and church adornment to express their Lutheran identity and establish their position within social hierarchies. As Lutheranism developed in the seventeenth century, so too did Lutheran art, becoming more suited to fostering contemplative devotion. While diverse in their aims, many Lutherans appreciated the importance of regular investment in the visual. Ducal pronouncements, archives held centrally and locally, surviving artefacts and decoration in churches, and printed sources enable the distinctive visual character of Lutheranism in Württemberg to be identified here.

Abstract:
This thesis categorises some characteristic features in the 20th century Lutheran theology, in order to create a picture of the Lutheran theology and Lutheran pre-understanding of life which leave its marks on Selma Lagerlöf as well as on other contemporary expressions of faith and worldviews. Four Lutheran figures of thought are examined as undercurrents in the discourse of the writings of Selma Lagerlöf. They are a) The understanding of Word and Faith, which includes the understanding of justification by faith. b) Faith in God as Creator and in his providence. c) The doctrine of vocatio and God's two regiments. d) The theology of the Cross that emphasises the descent of God and God's taking part in the human life. This investigation has shown that the epic of Lagerlöf can be read in terms of Lutheran theology. The religious roots of Selma Lagerlöf are often described as ”a nothing” - a traditional background, a friendly non-doctrinal piety, and so forth. But this inconspicuous and unconscious religious background has a content, namely the Lutheran faith in the culture and society in which she grew up. Some of the great novels such as The story of Gösta Berlings saga, Jerusalem and The wonderful adventures of Nils and some stories, sagas and legends are investigated. The study shows how the Lutheran understanding of life is expressed in these texts and their interpretation of the reality.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the missionary work of the Italian Capuchin Lorenzo da Brindisi. Renowned in his own day as a preacher, Bible scholar, missionary, chaplain, and diplomat, as well as vicar general of his Order, Lorenzo led the first organised, papally-commissioned Capuchin mission among the non-Catholics of Bohemia in the Holy Roman Empire from 1599 to 1602, and returned there, again under papal mandate, from 1606 to 1613. This thesis examines Lorenzo’s evangelistic and polemical activities in Central Europe in order to shed light on some of the ways the Capuchins laboured in religiously divided territories to confirm Catholics in their faith and to win over heretics. The introduction explains, principally, the thesis’s purpose and the historiographical background. Chapter one provides a brief biographical sketch of Lorenzo’s life followed by details of his afterlife. Chapter two examines his leading role in establishing the Capuchins’ new Commissariate of Bohemia-Austria-Styria in 1600, and specifically its first three friaries in Prague, Vienna, and Graz. Chapter three treats his preaching against heresy. Chapter four focuses on how Lorenzo, while in Prague, involved himself directly in theological disputations with two different Lutheran preachers. The first dispute, with Polykarp Leyser, took place in July 1607, and dealt with good works and justification. The second, with a Lutheran whose name is not known for certain, and which occurred in August 1610, concerned Catholic veneration of the Virgin Mary. Chapter five analyses the Lutheranismi hypotyposis, Lorenzo’s literary refutation of Lutheranism following additional contact with Polykarp Leyser in 1607. The conclusion considers briefly the effectiveness of Lorenzo’s apostolate and closes with a review of the thesis as a whole.

Abstract:
In the context of Western, European, Nordic, and Swedish radical nationalism, this study is an analysis of the various ways the political party the Sweden Democrats talks about religion; primarily about Swedish Evangelical-Lutheran Christianity and the Church of Sweden.   The study investigates the party expressions on religion and nationalism, using theoretical models of interpretation, constructed for this specific purpose, out of hermeneutic methodology.   The purpose has been to analyse the different functions of the various ways the Sweden Democrats talk about religion, and to investigate how the references to religion legitimize the ideology of nationalism, with the aim to answer the following questions: How do the Sweden Democrats’ talk on religion function as an identity marker? In what way is it possible to distinguish an aspiration for cultural purity in the Sweden Democrats’ talk on religion? Is it possible to distinguish neo-racism in the Sweden Democrats’ talk on religion? In which ways can the Sweden Democrats’ talk on religion be regarded as political strategy?   The results demonstrate in which ways the Sweden Democrats apply religion to promote the party perceptions of nationalism, as well as to legitimize the party conceptions of the Swedish nation and the Swedish people: Swedish Christianity and the Church of Sweden are used to identify Swedish culture and to identify contrasting foreign culture. Swedish Christianity is used as the determining factor between the good Swedish people and the bad other people. Swedish Christianity is used as the determining factor between the right Swedish values and the wrong values of the other. Swedish Christian values are used as dividing criteria between the culturally pure Swedish people and the culturally impure other people. The degeneration of the Church of Sweden mirrors the degeneration of the Swedish society. Swedish Christian homogeneity will guarantee security for the Swedish people and the Swedish nation within the Swedish nation-state. Elements of religion and culture sort different peoples into different categories in the hierarchical view of humanity. Swedish Christianity and Swedish culture identify and define the Swedish people as innocent to the current precarious situation of the Swedish nation, and Swedish Christianity and Swedish culture identify and define the people of the other, which is to blame for this situation. The Swedish people is superior, to the non-Swedish people, because of superior Swedish religion and superior Swedish culture. Swedish Christianity is used to promote anti-democratic political positions. Swedish Christianity is used to legitimize coercion and force in the enforcement of Swedishness.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks a reappraisal of Martin Luther’s complex understanding of theology’s place in the social and political reformation of sixteenth century Germany. Here I seek to reintroduce an element of that theology that has been largely absent from mainstream scholarship: music. Building on Robin Leaver’s influential 2007 work, Luther’s Liturgical music, wherein he argues that Luther’s liturgical song-writing ought to be understood theologically, I will demonstrate how the reformer sought to use a musically expressed theology to build a foundation of faith among the German laity- a prerequisite, he believed, to a successful reformation of Christian religion and society. I will place the genesis of this idea both in Luther’s participation in the Indulgence Controversy, and in the failed ‘Leisnig Experiment’, in which he promoted the adoption of a congregationalist model of spiritual self-regulation. Luther’s answer to the failures of Leisnig was an educational program centered on teaching a theology of the Psalms through music. In his teachings, we will see that Luther saw theology as not only a path to salvation, but as a practical remedy to broader social problems arising from greed and false teaching. This discussion will conclude with an explanation of why this educational program of teaching theology through music did not feature prominently in Lutheran pedagogy once the process of confessionalization was begun in the late 1520’s.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to: (1) analyse the historical and legal processes of regulating the legal status of the real estate of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church, including both its property taken over by the State Treasury (with no legal title) after the Second World War and the property belonging to the Evangelical parishes incorporated as a part of the church in 1947; (2) assess the practices of the Regulatory Commission and the judicial system in the Third Republic of Poland related to the compliance of the administration of justice with the normative model adopted. Achieving the first goal is a prerequisite to reaching the second. In other words, without an in-depth knowledge of the historical processes it would be impossible to conduct a thorough analysis of today’s Evangelical property restitution proceedings, which as a rule disregard the legal regulations adopted in the law providing for the restitution of property of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church. In 1947 the parishes of the Evangelical churches functioning in the Second Polish Republic were incorporated into the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession. Although these parishes had been in practice liquidated back in 1945, and their property (with no legal title) had fallen into the possession of either the State and its organizational units, or the Catholic Church and other religious denominations, they de jure still existed. The property of the Lutheran parishes formerly functioning on the territory of the Second Polish Republic, appropriated in 1945 by the State authorities and later incorporated into the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession, included over 4,000 pieces of real estate, more than 2500 sacred buildings and accompanying structures, thousands of cemeteries as well as about 100,000 ha of agricultural and forest land. Church buildings and other real estate functionally belonging to them were transferred to the Catholic Church and to a lesser extent to other religious denominations. As far as the property incorporated into the parishes in 1947 is concerned, the Evangelical-Augsburg Church was given only a few pieces of real estate which it in fact had owned on October 31, 1946 before the incorporation. The appropriation of Evangelical property (with no title) in 1945 was legalized in the following years. When the People’s Republic of Poland was heading towards its collapse, the communist authorities, soliciting support from the Catholic Church in the parliamentary 338 election to the so-called ‘contractual Sejm’, gave the Church titles to thousands of pieces of sacred property which had already been at its disposal, together with the buildings and structures functionally related to them, i.e. churches and chapels, presbyteries, parsonages, etc. located on the territory of the former Second Republic of Poland. The legal status of the remaining property of these parishes was regulated by the Act of 13 May 1994 on the position of the State concerning the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in the Republic of Poland, which defined the principles of its restitution to this Church. The solution adopted in this act empowered the Evangelical-Augsburg Church to apply for the restoration of property or for compensation for the thousands of pieces of real estate appropriated after the Second World War without a legal title to them, which posed a serious threat to the State budget. Making concessions for that, the Evangelical-Augsburg Church reduced its claims inter alia by not seeking compensation for 2,300 pieces of sacred property appropriated by the Catholic Church. This did not suffice, however. As a result of an intense pressure from the state authorities, not only was a wrong legal basis adopted for the proceedings on the claims of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church submitted to the Regulatory Commission but it was interpreted contra legem as well. Faced with the threat of paralysing the activities of the Regulatory Commission, the Evangelical-Augsburg Church accepted the rules imposed for many years. This allowed for the recovery of at least part of the lost real estate but at the same time resulted in the irretrievable loss of many of its most valuable pieces. Moreover, the claims for the restitution of its property lost in the period of totalitarian rule met with resistance and objections from the local branches of the state administration and local government, all of which adhered to the position of the party representing the government in the Regulatory Commission. Local branches would not only frequently dispose of real estate subject to regulatory proceedings, which in the case of Western and Northern Poland resulted in the proceedings deemed groundless leading to their consecutive cancellation, but would also go as far as concealing the existence of relevant documents or sometimes even providing the Regulatory Commission with false information. The restitution process for Evangelical real estate was also fraught with difficulties posed by the judiciary. The Supreme Court ruled that the purchase by the State Treasury of the title to Evangelical real estate by virtue of a court order issued on the basis of the decree of 1946 on abandoned and post-German assets, excluded the possibility of restoring the title to such property. Moreover, the court allowed the possibility of the acquisition of the ownership of Evangelical real estate by the State Treasury through usucaption by adding the period of 339 totalitarian rule to the necessary lapse of time beyond which the real estate could be gained, which contradicted the essence of the regulatory proceedings. It may safely be said that the Supreme Court’s administration of justice regarding claims for the restitution of property formerly owned by the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession has become an instrument for reducing and rejecting these claims.

Abstract:
Niniejsza praca jest studium z historii idei – historii myśli społecznej i socjologii pojęć osadzonych w rzeczywistości historycznej, ideowej, politycznej i społecznej. Rozważania nad politycznością teologii Bonhoeffera prowadziłam w odniesieniu do wybranych koncepcji teoretycznych teologii politycznej, czynników kształtujących niemiecką tożsamość i elementów ewangelickiej etyki politycznej. Praca jest twórczą refleksją z zakresu socjologii pojęć, prowadzoną w ramach i metodami właściwymi historii idei.
This work is a study from within the history of ideas, i.e. the history of social thought and the sociology of ideas rooted in the historical, ideological, political, and social reality. Using methodology that is congruent with the history of ideas, I introduce the reader to ideas (the political, political theology, the German Sonderweg); categories (obligation, vocation, duty, culpability, punishment); history and traditions (of Germany, Reformation, Lutheranism, philosophy, social thought.) With this I am creating the context, or contexts, for the ethical considerations regarding Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The task that I undertook was to analyse and describe selected aspects of thought and work of this German Lutheran theologian and clergyman. I first refer to the factors creating the ideological and conceptual landscape where Bonhoeffer’s thought was born, and consider ways in which these are present in his work. I then analyse the author’s selected texts, putting them into the context of notions and traditions of thought that co-created the German ideological reality of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. My emphasis is mainly on the concept and question of politicality on the one hand, and the relationship between a Christian person, Churches, and the political power on the other. One of the interpretative keys that I applied to the work of Bonhoeffer is the concept of witness that is used, among others, for the analysis of the politicality of theology in trying times as well as the Christian freedom and its role in the totalitarian system. My considerations of politicality in Bonhoeffer’s theology are based on selected theoretical concepts of the political theology, the factors that shape German identity, and various elements of Evangelical political ethics. Altogether, this dissertation is a creative reflection from within the field of the sociology of ideas and as such was completed in accord with the methods specific to the history of ideas.
