Abstract In order to increase the amount of information available on vertebral bone material properties, a three dimensional, nondestructive data collection system has been developed. To measure the deflections of a bone specimen in three dimensions, LVDTs were positioned in the three primary axes. LVDTs are used because their measurements will not be influenced by the MTS machine, and therefore the deflection read from the MTS machine can be used to check the LVDT output.
