AbstractThe heroic lyric had long been a masculine symbolic space linked with the male social world of career and achievement. However, the participation of a critical mass of Ming-Qing women lyricists, whose gendered consciousness played a role in their textual production, complicated the issue. This paper examines how women crossed gender boundaries to appropriate masculine poetics, particularly within the dimension of the heroic lyric to the tune Man jiang hong, to voice their reflections on larger historical circumstances as well as women's gender roles in their society.

Abstract:
The Introduction sketches the alteration of lyric’s place in the nineteenth century. Poetry, which had been a primary purveyor of wisdom and consolation for a relatively homogenous society grounded in Christian belief, becomes a print commodity confronting a society in which contending beliefs—including beliefs in rationalism, science, and progress—have rendered naïve belief and the forms of wisdom and consolation that might attend it unavailable to writers like Poe, Whitman, and Dickinson who were acutely attuned to their times and sensed the hollowness of the discourses around them. They did not abandon lyric, but modernized it. The end of art—as Hegel put it—as the primary vehicle for belief or spirit does not mean the end of lyric but a proliferation of poetic practices and a turn from the conveyance of meaning to the interrogation of language and received ideas, a revolution in poetic language evident in the work of these three U. S. poets, which puts them near the advent of modernity in poetry.

Abstract:
Sean Bonney’s work shows how noise may be deployed within a lyric structure to interrogate political relationships. Challenging Jacques Attali's view of noise as the clash of the new with what is culturally dominant, Greg Hainge argues that noise is a relational ontology that can best be understood through resistance within an 'expressive assemblage'. With reference to Hainge’s analysis of noise, this chapter explores the aurality and noise that inhabit Bonney’s reworking of lyric forms, from folk songs to the poetry of Baudelaire and Rimbaud. Bonney’s reading of Rimbaud, in which the dérèglement de tous les sens is a challenge to collective reordering of political senses, offers a guide to a politically disruptive listening. If the senses are socially mediated, but society is dominated by late capitalism, who owns what is heard? What forms of power are made audible and how? Listening, against the white noise of the neoliberal acoustic field, is the urgent political task to which Bonney’s poetry sets its readers.

Abstract:
After sketching the contours of the Roman literary scene at the start of Horace’s career, this chapter focuses on the two bodies of poetry that Horace produced before turning to the lyric poetry represented by the Odes: satires in two books and iambic poetry (also known as the Epodes). It is suggested that Horace’s relationship to the poetic personality required by those genres—the critic of society in the Satires and the poet of invective in the Epodes—was an ambivalent one. Several passages of Satires 1.1 are analyzed, highlighting this ambivalence and also revealing the early development of the poet’s style.

This chapter focuses on the three long literary epistles that are Horace’s last works, addressed, respectively, to Augustus, to Julius Florus, and to the members of the Piso family (which, following Quintilian, has come to be known, somewhat misleadingly, as the Ars Poetica). These verse letters are discussed with a view to showing that several of Horace’s general statements about poetry constitute an implicit commentary on his own lyric compositions, as regards the importance of craft, the value of the poet to Roman society, and the ability of the best poetry to be useful as well as pleasurable.

Abstract:
The concept of oppression, just like the concept of freedom, has a narrative character: there is a narrative that accompanies every transaction of meaning taking place between all of society and the larger forces of the world. The poem and its readers partake in this narrative as well: one that is initiated by the poem, and developed by each of its readers. This chapter addresses the interface between poetry and politics in language, using the reality of oppression in order to probe deeper into the fundamental concept of freedom. The notion of freedom is discussed in the specific context of Cold War oppression and the poetry of resistance, in order to see how that notion has evolved over time. Poetry is understood as a thinking and a feeling ground on which the language of oppression (suppressive) and lyric language (expressive) come into contact, giving a deeper sense of the human condition.
