In the present study, fifteen cucumber genotypes were screened against Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) and root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) individually and in combinations. None of the fifteen cucumber genotypes was found immune, highly or moderately resistant to M. incognita. Two genotypes viz., Alpha Prime and Patio were found resistant to the nematode. Primary and acquired drug resistance is a major challenge to achieving optimized clinical outcomes during cancer treatment which can arise from transcription reactivation, bypass and alteration during anticancer treatment [1-3]. Epigenetic dysregulation is emerging as a crucial component involved in drug resistance. Transcriptional adaptation during drug treatment is often mediated by inducible histone modifications, especially histone H3 lysine 27 acetylation (H3K27ac) at the distal enhancer elements, thus activating the transcription of drug resistance-associated genes [4-6]. Abstract. Acute physical exercise stimulates the activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis in man. In the present study we measured plasma adrenocorticotropin, beta-endorphin, beta-lipotropin and cortisol levels in 27 male trained athletes in basal conditions, 60 min before and immediately after an official competition. The endocrine responses were evaluated in different groups of athletes participating in races (100 m, 1500 m, 10 000 m) or in the disc throw. The athletes competing for the runs showed a statistically significant increase in plasma adrenocorticotropin, beta-endorphin,

beta 2-Microglobulin (beta 2M) polymerizes to form amyloid fibrils that deposit and cause destructive bone lesions in patients on chronic dialytic therapy. beta 2 M is mitogenic to osteoblasts; however, its effect on bone mineralization is unknown. To determine whether beta 2M causes bone demineralization, neonatal mouse calvariae were incubated with and without beta 2M, and net calcium flux was calculated. Following a 48-h but not 3- or 24-h incubation, beta 2M (10(-8)-10(-6) M) induced a net calcium efflux. The efflux was similar to that observed with 10(-10) M parathyroid hormone (PTH) but

Amino acid sequences determined either by protein sequencing or by DNA sequencing are identical for cefotaximases CTX-M-1 and MEN-1, whereas CTX-M-2 is 84% identical to CTX-M-1/MEN-1. Both beta-lactamases are distantly related to other plasmidic class A enzymes (homology to TEM-1 is 38.1% for CTX-M-1/MEN-1 and 36.5% for CTX-M-2); the closest relationship was with the chromosomal beta-lactamase of Klebsiella oxytoca E23004 (homologies of 74.5% for CTX-M-1/MEN-1 and 77.9% for CTX-M-2). The cefotaximases CTX-M-1/MEN-1 and CTX-M-2 represent two members of a new subgroup of plasmidic class A beta-l

Beta-alanine supplementation has been shown to improve exercise performance in short-term high-intensity efforts. However, whether supplementation with beta-alanine is ergogenic to actual sporting events remains unclear and should be investigated in field testing or race simulations.Purpose:The aim of this study was to assess if beta-alanine supplementation could improve 2,000-m rowing-ergometer performance in well-trained male rowers. Methods:Participants (N = 16) completed duplicate trials (2 × before supplementation and 2 × after supplementation) of a 2,000-m rowing-ergometer race separated

Macrophages and granulocytes seem to play a key role in the pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) leads to macrophage deactivation, as well as to inhibition of cytokine production and of endothelial granulocyte adhesion. A rapid increase in the prevalence of beta-lactamase-producing Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis strains has been noticed during the last decades. Today, more than 80% of strains isolated worldwide produce beta-lactamase. To investigate beta-lactamase(s) of M. catarrhalis at the molecular level, the BRO-1 beta-lactamase gene (bla) was isolated as part of a 4,223-bp HindIII fragment. Sequence analysis indicated that bla encodes a polypeptide of 314 amino acid residues. Insertional inactivation of bla in M. catarrhalis resulted in complete abrogation of beta-lactamase production and ampicillin
