Salinas-Rodríguez, Sergio G., Juan Arévalo, Juan Manuel Ortiz, Eduard Borràs-Camps, Victor Monsalvo-Garcia, Maria D. Kennedy, and Abraham Esteve-Núñez, eds. Microbial Desalination Cells for Low Energy Drinking Water. IWA Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2166/9781789062120.

Full text
Abstract:
The world's largest demonstrator of a revolutionary energy system in desalination for drinking water production is in operation. MIDES uses Microbial Desalination Cells (MDC) in a pre-treatment step for reverse osmosis (RO), for simultaneous saline stream desalination and wastewater treatment. MDCs are based on bio-electro-chemical technology, in which biological wastewater treatment can be coupled to the desalination of a saline stream using ion exchange membranes without external energy input. MDCs simultaneously treat wastewater and perform desalination using the energy contained in the wastewater. In fact, an MDC can produce around 1.8 kWh of bioelectricity from the energy contained in 1 m3 of wastewater. Compared to traditional RO, more than 3 kWh/m3 of electrical energy is saved. With this novel technology, two low-quality water streams (saline stream, wastewater) are transformed into two high-quality streams (desalinated water, treated wastewater) suitable for further uses. An exhaustive scaling-up process was carried out in which all MIDES partners worked together on nanostructured electrodes, antifouling membranes, electrochemical reactor design and optimization, life cycle assessment, microbial electrochemistry and physiology expertise, and process engineering and control. The roadmap of the lab-MDC upscaling goes through the assembly of a pre-pilot MDC, towards the development of the demonstrator of the MDC technology (patented). Nominal desalination rate between 4-11 Lm-2h-1 is reached with a current efficiency of 40 %. After the scalability success, two MDC pilot plants were designed and constructed consisting of one stack of 15 MDC pilot units with a 0.4 m2 electrode area per unit. This book presents the information generated throughout the EU funded MIDES project and includes the latest developments related to desalination of sea water and brackish water by applying microbial desalination cells. Abstract:
The Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex MTC is composed of several species of mycobacteria which are M. tuberculosis, the main cause of human tuberculosis, M. canetti, M. africanum, M. microti, M. pinnipedii, M. caprae, and M. bovis. Cattle are the principal host of M. bovis, but a large number of other ruminants and other mammals, particularly wildlife are infected. Human tuberculosis is a global problem of huge proportions. More than 95% of human tuberculosis cases occur in developing and transition countries, of which one third are in Africa but the proportion of cases caused by M. bovis is still not known. Today, bovine tuberculosis (BTB) is re-emerging and threatens the livestock industry in industrialized countries with wildlife reservoirs like the wild tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the USA or the badger (Meles meles) in the UK. Most developing countries lack the means and capacity for effective control of BTB. A better understanding of its epidemiology is required to identify novel, locally adapted options for control in a given context. BTB in Africa is emphasized here because of the special importance of multiple transmission interfaces between wildlife, livestock and humans. In addition to obligatory pathogenic mycobacteria (esp. members of the MTC), potentially pathogenic mycobacteria (PPM) previously designated as ‘mycobacteria other than tubercle bacilli’ (MOTT) are increasingly important causes of mycobacterioses in humans and animals. Most of them are opportunistic in humans and occur mostly in immunocompromised patients. The mycobacteria that cause human disease are both the M. avium complex (MAC) members and other mycobacterial species MAC members have been detected in more than 95% of cases; this chapter will mainly focus on M. avium subsp. avium, M. a. hominissuis, and M. intracellulare.

Mavi, Jagroop, Anne C. Boat, and Senthilkumar Sadhasivam. Myelomeningocele Repair. Edited by Erin S. Williams, Olutoyin A. Olutoye, Catherine P. Seipel, and Titilopemi A. O. Aina. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190678333.003.0051.

Full text
Abstract:
Myelomeningocele (MMC) is a spinal birth defect associated with significant morbidity directly related to the exposure of meninges and neural structures. Further neurological dysfunction may occur secondary to Chiari II malformation and hydrocephalus. MMC repair is typically performed postnatally within the first 24 to 48 hours of life due to the concern for infection. Prenatal MMC correction is performed in select cases after studies showed improved neurological outcomes. Anesthesia for MMC repairs can be challenging, and appropriate screening should be performed preoperatively. During postnatal repair, care must be taken when positioning the infant to avoid any pressure on the MMC sac. Anesthesia can be maintained with a combination of inhalational agents and intravenous opioids. Prenatal MMC repairs must consider both fetal and maternal safety outcomes. They can be performed through both open and fetoscopic routes, with anesthesia focused on maintaining maternal blood pressure, optimizing uterine relaxation, and adequate pain control.
