Abstract:

We consider the credibility, persuasiveness, and informativeness of multidimensional cheap talk by an expert to a decision maker. We find that an expert with state-independent preferences can always make credible comparative statements that trade off the expert's incentive to exaggerate on each dimension. Such communication benefits the expert—cheap talk is “persuasive”—if her preferences are quasiconvex. Communication benefits a decision maker by allowing for a more informed decision, but strategic interactions between multiple decision makers can reverse this gain. We apply these results to topics including product recommendations, voting, auction disclosure, and advertising. (JEL D44, D72, D82, D83, M37)

Abstract:

AbstractIn April 2017 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has delivered first resolved images of a shadow of a supermassive black hole. Apart from black hole sources in M87 and in the Galactic Center, observed with resolution comparable to the Schwarzschild radius scale, EHT observed multiple AGN sources during the 2017 campaign. These include 3C279, Centaurus A, OJ287 and more. For most of the considered sources EHT 2017 data set should allow to reconstruct images with highest angular resolution in the history of their observations, approaching 20 uas. While the analysis of these data is still ongoing, I will talk about the scientific opportunities related to observing AGN sources with the extreme resolution of the EHT as well as about the astrophysical questions that these observations may help answering.

Abstract:

Objective - This research aims to transform local values of accountability to religious organizations. Methodology/Technique - The research uses a deconstruction approach with acculturative critical ethnography. The research was conducted at the Catholic Church in Tana Toraja, South of Sulawesi Indonesia, using a in depth interview, observation, and artefact interpretation to determine accountability values. Findings - The results show identify three main dimensions of accountability; spiritual, leadership and finance. These dimensions are aligned with accountability in tongkonan values. A transformation is done by considering the Church as Christ's tongkonan and the spiritual accountability dimension binds all family members when participating in Church rituals. With respect to the leadership dimension, the leadership value of Panglaa Tondok encourage all Church members to be loyal to their leader and creates a concept of collegial collective leadership. Novelty - With respect to the financial dimension, the value of "kombongan" indicates that financial resources must be formulated together in a community of stakeholders. The transformation results of this research can be used to increase the accountability of church organizations and encourage the adoption of local cultural practices in the management of church organizations. Abstract:

SYNOPSIS This study examines quantitative long-term earnings growth (LTG) forecasts issued by publicly traded firms. While the difficulty of verifying management LTG forecasts provides incentives for self-serving disclosures, we find that stakeholder interests and forecast credibility considerations significantly constrain such tendencies. In particular, we find that demand from market participants, information asymmetry, peer LTG forecast provision, product market competition, and industry profitability drive management LTG forecast issuance, while poor performance and high uncertainty over firm growth prospects deter management LTG forecast issuance. Moreover, we provide evidence that management LTG forecasts, on average, provide incremental information about future earnings growth, and that high competition and investor monitoring increase LTG forecast informativeness, consistent with predictions of theoretical cheap talk models. Our findings also indicate that both upward and downward LTG guidance provide incremental information about future earnings growth, and that analysts revise their LTG forecasts in the direction of LTG guidance. Overall, our study contributes to the voluntary disclosure literature by providing evidence that suggests elements of a firm's disclosure environment significantly influence the issuance and informativeness of difficult-to-verify disclosures. Abstract:

Large and complex operations environments such as the one being designed for the Space Station Freedom will undoubtedly place many requirements on crewmembers to simultaneously perform multiple tasks; i.e., “multitasking.” Moreover, it is unlikely crewmembers will finish a task without being interrupted several times. Depending on the nature of these interruptions, crewmembers may be forced to suspend their activities. One danger in suspending activities is forgetting (e.g., forgetting what the activities were, or one's position within the activities, or certain procedures, etc.). Forgetting to complete even a single activity in space may have serious consequences. As a countermeasure to forgetting, the present study introduced the use of computer- based “reminders.” The purpose of this study was to: (1) establish a baseline measure of multitasking, (2) examine the effects of interruptions on task performance, and (3) explore the use of computer-based "reminders." The results revealed subjects could perform three and five simultaneous tasks with a response accuracy of 98 percent. A large portion of that performance was attributed to practice and response pacing. In addition, the interruption task chosen for this study did not affect reaction time or response error performance on the main tasks. The use of a computer-based checkmark reminder proved to be beneficial in reducing menu search time regardless of the number of items to be located. Search time decreased considerably when the reminder was available to subjects as opposed to when it was absent. This study concludes that with practice and pacing, people can perform at least five simple tasks simultaneously. Furthermore, the benefits of incorporating computer-based reminders should not be limited only to multitasking environments.

Abstract:

Two principal issues were.investigated in this experiment: (1) to determine if the performance of an operator controlling a simulated space vehicle was affected by variable transmission delays; and (2) to determine if an approximate predictor cue enhanced the operator's ability to control the vehicle. The study employed two independent variables, delay variability and prediction. There were four levels, or ranges, of delay variability; 2.50 ± 0.00, 2.50 ± 0.25, 2.50 ± 0.50, and 2.50 ± 1.00 s, and two levels of prediction, with and without prediction. The amount of fuel used to complete the task, the time to complete the task, error score (weighted deviations from the desired flight path), and a Cooper-Harper subjective rating were the dependent measures used to gauge the performance of the operator. Each of the eight treatment combinations contained three trials for the 12 operators to perform. The results of this experiment indicate that the greater the delay variability, the greater is the amount of fuel used for each task and the greater is the perceived difficulty. Prediction did not significantly enhance the operator's ability to control the vehicle. This result is probably due to one of two reasons: (1) the task itself was too easy; thus, the predictor did not assist the operators in completing the task, or (2) since the predictor was not completely accurate, the operators may have lacked confidence in its ability to improve their performance. Consequently, this result suggests that a predictor cue may not be useful for this type of situation. Recommendations are suggested for further research efforts associated with predictors used in conjunction with variable delay conditions.

Abstract:

Microgreen basil memiliki kandungan nutrisi yang tinggi serta menjadi salah satu solusi untuk mengurangi adanya gizi buruk dan obesitas di Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pegaruh pemberian jarak lampu LED dan jeis media tanam terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil produksi microgreen basil. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada Maret-Juli 2019 di Balai Pengkajian Teknologi Pertanian (BPTP) DKI Jakarta. Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan yaitu Rancangan Petak Terbagi (split plot) yang terdiri dari dua faktor, faktor pertama yaitu jarak lampu LED terdiri dari 3 taraf dan faktor kedua yaitu media tanam yang terdiri dari 4 taraf sehingga terdapat 12 satuan percobaan dengan 6 kali ulangan. Faktor pertama yaitu J1(20 cm), J2 (40 cm), J3 (60 cm). Faktor kedua yaitu M1 (media tanam zeolit), M2 (media tanam rockwool), M3 (media tanam vermikulit), dan M4 (media tanam arang sekam). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jarak lampu yang semakin dekat memberikan intensitas cahaya yang lebih tinggi, namun suhu dan kelembaban udara pada iklim mikro penelitian tidak jauh berbeda. Perlakuan jarak lampu LED berpengaruh signifikan terhadap peubah bobot segar dan kandungan klorofil pada microgreen. Sementara itu, perlakuan media tanam memberikan pengaruh yang nyata terhadap peubah tinggi tanaman, berat segar, dan klorofil daun, sementara itu perlakuan jarak lampu LED dan interaksi antar kedua perlakuan member pengaruh nyata hanya pada peubah bobot segar dan kandungan klorofil microgreen. Jarak lampu yang direkomendasikan berdasar penelitian ini adalah 20 cm (J1); media tanam yang memberikan hasil terbaik adalah rockwool dan vermikulit.

Abstract:

Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) have their own modules that need to be executed to manage system resources and such modules add overhead to task response times. FreeRTOS is used for experimental purposes since its is a widely used open-source RTOS. This work presents the investigation of two important sources of overhead: Function Tick, a FreeRTOS time marker, and the Context Switch between tasks. In this paper we also describe a model for reducing Tick analysis pessimism due to its temporal variation. Experiments measuring the execution time of Tick and Context Switch on ARM-Cortex M4 microprocessor were made to present the Best-Case Execution Time and the Worst-Case Execution time within a periodic task scenario. Measurements are used to validate the analytic models.

Abstract:

Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) using AC or DC current types has been utilised for the manufacture and repair of turbine engine components for many years. The weld repair of single crystal components such as turbine blade tips is also important. However, welding of a single crystal alloy has its associated problems (which will be discussed later). SMP14 is an advanced single crystal, Ni-base superalloy used for turbine blading. This alloy has enhanced mechanical properties at elevated temperatures when compared to equiaxed, directionally solidified and first generation single crystal superalloys. The objective of this task is to investigate the weldability of SMP14 using the new variable polarity GTAW process. Metallurgical investigations were undertaken to evaluate the microstructure of the welded region. Microporosity was found in the weld and there was no evidence of recrystallization, sub-grains beneath the weld or microcracking/microfissuring. Tensile test evaluations revealed that a high strength weld equivalent to equiaxed MAR-M247, Ni-based superalloy could be achieved. This appears to be the highest weld mechanical strength achieved to date when joining any Ni-base single crystal alloy together. Fractography was also utilised to analyse the fracture surfaces of the tensile test samples. Oxidation tests also revealed that the oxidation resistance of the weld was good and will be suitable for weld tip restoration where the weld needs to have good oxidation resistance.
