Abstract:
Effects of 16-wk strength training on maximal strength and power performance of the arm and leg muscles and serum concentrations [testosterone (T), free testosterone (FT), and cortisol] were examined in 11 middle-aged (M46; 46 ± 2 yr) and 11 older men (M64; 64 ± 2 yr). During the 16-wk training, the relative increases in maximal strength and muscle power output of the arm and leg muscles were significant in both groups ( P < 0.05–0.001), with no significant differences between the two groups. The absolute increases were higher ( P < 0.01–0.05) in M46 than in M64 mainly during the last 8

This paper examines the phonological behaviour of the causative morpheme –i- in Tonga, using the Plateau and Valley Tonga varieties. It identifies the various segments in radical final positions of different verbal forms and seeks to establish how the introduction of the causative morpheme in their environment affects the segments. The paper finds that in some cases the morpheme induces phonological change to the segments preceding the morpheme, with more phonological ‘activity’ noted in Plateau Tonga. The influence of the morpheme identified in the study is that it induces fricativisation, pa

The dysfunction observed during timing tasks partially coincides with that evidenced during change-detection ones (both of attentional processing during odball paradigm and of preattentional processing in the mismatch negativity response). The implication is that timing dysfunction might underlie aberrant Salience Network (SN) and therefore cognitive impairment observed in SZ. Abstract:
ABSTRACT The cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) response against the murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) immediate-early gene 1 (IE1) 89-kDa phosphoprotein pp89 plays a major role in protecting BALB/c mice against the lethal effects of the viral infection. CTL populations specific to MCMV early-phase and structural antigens are also generated during infection, but the identities of these antigens and their relative contributions to overall immunity against MCMV are not known. We previously demonstrated that DNA vaccination with a pp89-expressing plasmid effectively generated a CTL response and conferred p

ABSTRACT We previously demonstrated that immunization of mice with plasmid DNAs (pDNAs) expressing the murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) genes IE1-pp89 and M84 provided synergistic protection against sublethal viral challenge, while immunization with plasmids expressing putative virion proteins provided no or inconsistent protection. In this report, we sought to augment protection by increasing the breadth of the immune response. We identified another MCMV gene (m04 encoding gp34) that provided strong and consistent protection against viral replication in the spleen. We also found that immunizatio

ABSTRACT The accounting literature often views managers as individuals whose financial reporting decisions are determined by their economic incentives and individual characteristics. However, managers typically work in a team and most decisions have at least some input from other members of the team. This study examines the impacts of two top management team (TMT) characteristics on financial reporting quality. The results indicate that background homogeneity and long-shared working experience are each distinctly related to a higher likelihood of restatements. Additional tests document that te

The paper presents the results of an investigation of the influence of concrete compressive strength on the shear strength of reinforced concrete beams, both nonprestressed and prestressed. A total of 132 existing tests on high strength concrete beams, with and without shear reinforcement, were analyzed and compared with the shear design provisions of the CSA Standard CAN3-A23.3-M94 and the previous version of the code, CAN3-A23.3-M84. The main parameter in the investigation was the concrete compressive strength. Owing to the complex nature of shear behaviour and the interdependence of the fac

Abstract Hypomethylating drugs (e.g. Azacitadine, Decitabine) are becoming increasingly attractive choices for the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), particularly in populations deemed inappropriate for standard anthracycline-based induction chemotherapy (i.e., 7+3), such as the elderly. Acute erythroleukemia (French-American- British M6) is a rare, heterogeneous disorder involving increased red cell precursors and myeloblasts, that accounts for 3–5% of de novo AML and 20–30% of secondary AML. Three subsets have been described: M6A (myeloblast-rich erythroleukemia); M6B (proerythro

ABSTRACT CD8 T cells are the principal effector cells in the resolution of acute murine cytomegalovirus (mCMV) infection in host organs. This undoubted antiviral and protective in vivo function of CD8 T cells appeared to be inconsistent with immunosubversive strategies of the virus effected by early (E)-phase genes m04, m06, and m152. The so-called immune evasion proteins gp34, gp48, and gp37/40, respectively, were found to interfere with peptide presentation at different steps in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I pathway of antigen processing and presentation in fibroblasts.

Abstract Background DNA methylation has been extensively studied as a regulator of gene expression among eukaryotes, but the regulatory role for DNA methylation has been far less studied in bacterial pathogens. Streptococcus pyogenes, or Group A Streptococcus, is an important bacterial pathogen of children. Our group has recently shown that S. pyogenes utilizes DNA methylation at N6-methyladenine (m6A) as a regulatory mechanism, modulating gene transcription and influencing the expression of several genes recognized as potential virulence factors. Our goal was to further explore how DNA methyl
