Abstract:
This study examines master of art (MA) theses abstracts written in English in terms of their texual structures. In order to design a comparative study, abstracts are collected from universities (i) with a guideline in Turkey (ii) without a guideline in Turkey and (iii) with a guideline in the USA. 94 abstracts, randomly selected from these three groups of universities, are analyzed according to a content criteria list developed on the basis of Swales (1981, 1990, 2004), and Hyland&rsquo<br>s (2000) textual structure models and content instructions provided in thesis writing guidelines. The analysis of data is accomplished using MS Excel 2010 ve SPSS 16.0. The comparison between abstracts written at universities with and without a guideline in Turkey revealed a significant difference in terms of methodology and statement of the problem. Also, with regards to the order of the rhetorical elements (Introduction+Methodology+Results+Conclusion), universities with a guideline in Turkey displayed more consistency than the universities without a guideline. As for the comparison between the universities with a guideline in Turkey and the USA, the results showed that there is a significant difference between the two abstract sets in terms of their methodology, results, and conclusion parts. Besides, the texual pattern analysis showed that abstracts collected from universities with a guideline in Turkey follow a more consistent order than their counterparts in the USA. The results of the thesis have pedagogical implicatons for students, teachers, academics who prepare thesis writing guidelines, and researchers who want to make publications internationally.

Abstract:
In this collection of short stories, I abduct experiences from my own life and take them on an imaginative journey. I experiment with elements of structure and point of view, often incorporating the magical or surreal to amplify the narrator’s internal landscape. As demonstrated in the title story, “Almost Astronauts,” these stories all deal with a sudden and sometimes destructive shift in the narrator’s perspective.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates how the eight state-funded New Zealand universities present themselves in the prospectuses they publish yearly. The background for this research is the fact that the universities now have to compete for students and funding monies because the government has linked the amount of funding to the number of students and the universities’ success in research (McKenzie, 1996). Additionally, student fees and private sources increasingly contribute to the universities’ budget. The entry of competition into the tertiary education sector is a result of recent policy changes that led the education sector from an egalitarian scholarly system with a tradition of open and free access for all citizens to a market-oriented education industry, which contributes considerably to the national economy. This restructuring of the tertiary education sector is part of the major social, political and economic changes that New Zealand went through – and is still going through – beginning with the Fourth Labour Government's second term of office from 1987 to 1990 (Holland & Boston, 1990). The historical background of this thesis focuses on these policy changes that influenced all areas of the public life in New Zealand in the last 25 years. The literature review established that these reforms resulted in processes of commodification of education, competitive marketisation and corporatisation of the universities (Butterworth & Tarling, 1994). The purpose of this thesis is to find evidence of these three tendencies within the language and visual presentation of the university prospectuses. The prospectuses have been chosen as the data corpus because they provide a comprehensive overview of the institutions. Moreover, they represent a hybrid genre of an advertorial text type, being partly informational, partly promotional. The data has been analysed by applying textually-oriented discourse analysis (Fairclough, 1992). Discourse analysis has been proven to be a suitable methodology as it links linguistic analysis to the broader social context. The premise of this approach was that social changes leave traces within the discourse. The data analysis confirmed the intended outcome that the tendencies of commodification, marketisation and corporatisation are visible in the present material. This concludes that the order of discourse of business has colonised the order of discourse of tertiary education.

Abstract:
This thesis is a practical project which involves moving images and paintings together as a medium that explores phenomena of contemporary China relating to personal identity, independence and its relationship with the traditional importance on collective groups, group centredness and interdependence. The project’s approach draws on sociological research on Western thought, values and beliefs naturally occurring in China since the “Open Door” policy as raw data to focus on the transition and transformation of contemporary Chinese individuality, and translates these data to form the concepts underpinning the metaphoric method of my artwork. Bubbles are the main visual symbols that metaphorically imply the incessantly transformable Chinese individuality and social cultural identity. My aim has been to portray this phenomenon through artistic practices on screens. By reflecting and engaging with moving images and paintings, underpinned by theoretical research and methods including data collecting, self-reflecting on data, practical manifestation and self-inquiry, I have attempted to unfold the phenomenon of contemporary Chinese individuality through my art practice. The thesis is composed as a creative work of moving images accompanied by an exegesis component. The moving image represents a nominal 80%, and the exegesis 20% of the final submission.

Abstract:
The work in progress, Pick Up Styx, investigates re-sensing and extra-sensing of the world. It is an exploration of communications with reference to quantum theory which challenges current sense perceptions, while engaging and exploring the notion of communications as signals. The methodology is a winding, coiling motion between research and creative practice based on the way my grandmother used to wind wool from a skein into a ball. The project investigates the game as a tool to examine the ciphers of perfumes that have been designed for love and happiness since 2001. The project aims to develop aesthetic pleasure in game play beyond the industry focus on games technology. Picking up the sticks and experiencing the perfumes in them is procedural to encountering the War on Terror, and the perfumes that have accompanied its progression over the last 8 years. In a materialist culture where technologies are enabling psycho kinesis, via the transmission of information signals, and where thought can influence matter in a variety of ways, we are training ourselves out of separatist thinking and fixation on the Western scientific paradigm. This project has grown from my curiosity regarding anomalous forms of cognition and paranormal perception, motivated by the need to address current issues of human relationship and environmental concerns.

Lopez, Jaramillo Maria Gabriela. "ARE TEACHERS READY FOR ELF? EVIDENCE FROM NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKING MA TESOL STUDENTS." OpenSIUC, 2014. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/1527.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed to explore whether non-native English-language teachers were aware of the existence of the English as a Lingua Franca paradigm and to examine their aspirations and preferences for themselves and their students as learners of English. Five research questions guided the study: 1) What variety of English do non-native teachers aspire to for themselves? 2) What variety of English do non-native teachers aspire to for their students? 3) What environments (native vs. non-native) do they consider to be most conducive for the acquisition of English? 4) Do they emphasize accuracy vs. intelligibility? 5) Is there a relationship between their aspirations and their preferences for accuracy and/or acceptability? The findings provided empirical evidence that non-native English teachers are aware of the different English varieties. The participating teachers seemed to put higher emphasis on intelligibility than on grammatical accuracy if they thought that certain utterances would not impede international communication. The results also revealed a dual orientation in participants' aspirations, where their awareness of the diversity of English varieties and their emphasis on intelligibility was paradoxically contradicted by their own strong preferences for native-like models of pronunciation and lexical knowledge.

Strong, Mary E. "The MA-10 Cell Line as a Model of insl3 Regulation and Leydig Cell Function." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2011. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/595.

Full text
Abstract:
Leydig cells produce testosterone in response to luteinizing hormone (LH) via the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)/protein kinase A pathway. Additionally, these cells are responsible for producing insulin-like peptide 3 (INSL3), a peptide hormone that is essential for testicular descent. The insl3 promoter in Leydig cells can be activated by cAMP through the transcription factor Nur77, which has also been shown to regulate the promoters of the steroidogenic enzymes, cyp17 and 3b-hsd. While the mechanism of LH action on testosterone production is well characterized, the effect of LH on insl3 abundance has yet to be shown directly. The MA-10 Leydig cells treated with hCG exhibited a transient and robust increase in nur77 mRNA, while insl3 mRNA abundance remained unchanged. Further, cAMP failed to affect insl3 mRNA, though nur77 mRNA abundance was significantly increased. Inhibition of LH-receptor-linked signal transduction pathways in the presence of hCG implicated multiple signaling networks in the regulation of both insl3 and nur77. Treatment with hCG or cAMP did not affect the abundance of 3b-hsd mRNA. Interestingly, though the MA-10 cell line has been reported to lack CYP17 activity and mRNA and so produce progesterone instead of testosterone, cyp17 mRNA was present and inducible by hCG and cAMP. The addition of hCG, testosterone, nor the combination of hCG and testosterone affected insl3 mRNA abundance. Though hCG consistently increased nur77 mRNA abundance, the addition of testosterone did not enhance the effects of hCG. Collectively, these results indicate that insl3 is regulated by factors other than LH/CG and cAMP in the MA-10 cell line.

Abstract:
This thesis documents my exploration of professional development of four experienced English language teachers of diverse background taking the MA TESOL programme at the University of Manchester. Having considered professional development to be about change construed broadly to professional identity and teacher beliefs, I explored it through a series of individual in-depth interviews held throughout the programme. The majority of the interviews focused on the teachers' ongoing life and development and allowed the teachers space to make meaning of what they were going through and how they were developing as they engaged in the programme. On the basis of the interviews, stories about the teachers and their year were constructed. Within the stories, I synthesized what I had learned about the teachers' experience and highlighted the changes that I could see had happened to their professional identity and teacher beliefs. The stories provide a vivid example of professional development of experienced English language teachers through a master's degree. They also bring to the fore the significance of future-directed thoughts for how teachers develop professionally, which is rarely acknowledged in the existing literature. I further use the stories as a ground to conceptualize professional development of the four teachers to account for the important role their thoughts about the future played in it. Using the concepts of imagined identity and antenarrative, which I borrow from the literature, I describe it as an iterative pursuit of an ever-evolving imagined identity, or identities, and antenarrative, or antenarratives. Finally, I examine the cases using the conceptualization as a lens and offer some further insights about professional development in TESOL.

Abstract:
The University of ManchesterNatalie Dietrich JonesPhD Development Policy and ManagementThe ma(r)king of complex border geographies and their negotiation by undocumented migrants: The case of Barbados2013ABSTRACTUsing Barbados as a case study, this thesis examines the relationship between agency, undocumentedness and borders. The relationship between these three concepts has been debated in a well-established European and North American literature; however, there is no similar body of work for the Caribbean, a space which since its genesis has been shaped by b/ordering practices. Through a stratified view of the border, it explored the discursive and non-discursive (material) factors which constrained migrants’ existence, and migrants’ agentic response to these constraints. The timing of fieldwork meant that the location’s geography, as well as migrants’ narratives, was marked by a recent amnesty exercise. In addition to ‘talk’ the research also relied on text, in the form of government and other legal documents relating to the management of migration. The research is therefore based on a combination of narrative and critical discourse analysis, espousing the methodological eclecticism that is encouraged in critical realist methodology. The study makes an important contribution to the field of border studies, based on its exploration of the relationship between a complex border ontology and migrant agency. The principal finding is that borders create complex geographies, which operate at varying spatial scales. The thesis thus provides an enhanced theorization of border(s), in particular as it relates to conceptualizations of space, suspect status, governmentality, and agency.

Full text
Abstract:
A two-dimensional structural analysis design approach has been the universally accepted method for a small structural engineering design firm. The tools to perform the analysis have been paper and pencil, calculators and more recently personal computers with two-dimensional software. With the introduction of three-dimensional software, a major shift is occurring on how small structural engineering firms approach analysis and design. This thesis research reviews the analysis of an existing building utilizing the standard two-dimensional approach, including horizontal diaphragm-action within wood floors. This study also reviews the research performed on horizontal diaphragms and investigates the use of three-dimensional, finite element modeling (RISA-3D) for the analysis of horizontal diaphragms. It is shown that the three-dimensional model can provide results similar to the two-dimensional hand calculations. However, the thickness of the diaphragm elements has to be significantly modified for flexible diaphragm action. The experience described herein is useful for structural engineer interfacing within three-dimensional CAD systems. The thesis concludes with a discussion on the challenges facing small structural engineering firms, including computer based technologies, engineering expertise to develop contract documents and review shop drawings, and outsourcing of design services.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the intersection of observational filmmaking with auto-ethnographic writing, a combination not used very often but with great potential for visual anthropologists. I examine how my research and filmmaking over a ten-year period have been shaped both by my cancer experience as well as by my Japanese background. Using the metaphor "journey", I approach my own traumatic cancer experience and turn it into a field of study. My journey begins from the moment of my first cancer diagnosis and treatment in the US, moving through my second diagnosis in Norway, and leading up to my most recent fieldwork with a cancer support community in Japan. My auto-ethnographic journey illustrates how I altered my own relationship to my cancer, moving through critical encounters that transformed me from a silent sufferer to an attentive listener. These experiences have also influenced my metaphorical thinking about "dying well" to "living well" with cancer. My personal journey is closely linked to my professional one, and also affects my approaches to filmmaking. By meeting the anthropologist Paul Stoller, who has also lived in the world of cancer, I learned the importance of coming to terms with one's own cancer mask. This mask can easily evoke a sense of being trapped in a "continuous liminality" (Stoller 2005), a transitional state between health and sickness, hopefulness and hopelessness, past and future, life and death. How am I able, as a researcher and filmmaker, to go on with my life in this in-between state and attend to the lives of others through this cancer mask? In my recent fieldwork, I decided to enter the world of the cancer patients' shadow and met with the families of patients and bereaved families in a support group in Japan. I learned that they too wore a mask, though I struggled to establish friendships with them as my cancer status versus their caregiver status distanced us somewhat. I overcame this challenge by using the technique of collaborative filmmaking to seek mutual fellowship with them, and trying to create a shared space in-between, ma in Japanese, where we could meet and feel with each other (kyokan empathy). For that purpose, and combined with the technique of feedback screening, I used a mobile phone as a filming device to free up my face and to make me available as a listener for the filmed persons. The fieldwork resulted in the film 'To the Last Drop' (2016). By combining the methods of auto-ethnographic writing and observational filmmaking, my personal account served to broaden my understanding of the experiences of those afflicted by cancer in Japan. Together, these methods expand on the space between, where suffering becomes visible and silence becomes audible, in a culturally sensitive way.

Hall, William. "Kleist and Hoffmann in dialogue with enlightenment." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2018. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/kleist-and-hoffmann-in-dialogue-with-enlightenment(be9c0ed9-14f6-4efe-9ce5-12a464a94c17).html.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers how Kleist and Hoffmann’s fiction might be considered as responding to the perceived shortcomings of enlightenment. The two writers, despite the barriers of literary categorisations, have a striking affinity in their sense that notions of truth and knowledge are intertwined with social and political agendas, rather than forming part of some natural teleology. The thesis breaks new ground in viewing the texts within a more expansive discourse context as literary interventions within a broad, cross-society engagement with enlightenment, in its various streams and factions. The texts studied, I argue, represent thought experiments, not merely reflecting and re-articulating the influences of literary peers and historically significant events, but instead testing the real-world application of key enlightenment ideas. The driving force for this thesis is the need to locate their work more rigorously in relation to enlightenment thought of their time than has previously been attempted. This is not so much a question of retrieving past influences, as one of viewing their work as being in dialogue with contemporary thought. Moving away from attempts using Kleist’s letters to theorise the relation between Kleist and Kant, this investigation instead turns to aspects of Kant’s philosophy to illuminate the texts. Hoffmann’s relationship to enlightenment, too, is explored beyond the prism of Romanticism. Taking a more comparative approach than previous work on the two writers, I identify not only thematic commonalities, but also a parallel aesthetic, in which multiple narratives coexist and where ‘truth’ is manufactured by the dominance of one particular narrative. The notion of 'MÃ1⁄4ndigkeit', central to Kant’s famous definition of 'Aufklärung' offers a useful guiding concept for the investigation and captures the emancipatory promise of self-realisation and the positive trajectory of human progress at the heart of the miscellany of moral and political theories and philosophies collectively known as ‘enlightenment’. The latter refers not to the historical period, but rather to a process of intellectual emancipation and an assemblage of ideals and values. As an intellectual movement, enlightenment was not, as is often assumed, monolithic, but encompasses conflicting notions of reason, freedom, and how its goals were to be achieved. Not only are the certainty and consequences of this intellectual emancipation evaluated in the texts, but I have also identified a radical questioning of the paradigms of thought which condition our understanding of narratives. Both Kleist and Hoffmann’s texts are narratively complex, often with shifts in focalisation, jumps in time, occasionally, figures whose identity changes leave the reader uncertain whether they are dealing with more than one character, and depictions of events which resist clarification through conventional understandings of time, space and causality. This project seeks to reconcile these ‘blind spots’ with a broader critique of enlightenment, in which absolute knowledge is shown to be illusory and truth simply reflective of constellations of power. The spatiotemporal and causal frameworks foundational to rational understanding and used to make sense of the world are revealed to be inadequate.

Abstract:
The internationalization of Chinese companies is a new reality. This is even more innovative if we isolate Chinese private firms and in particular those having businesses in developed countries as targets. If the first internationalizations of Chinese private firms to developed countries showed us less than optimal results; the latest show mixed outcomes. Interestingly, some of the latest firms with positive results are breaking through stable and complex global value chains, such as the automotive industry, to become first tier suppliers to transnational assemblers and even acquire large and apparently more capable first-tier global suppliers in developed countries. Based on the relevant literature, namely: automotive global value chain (Holweg et al., 2009; Humphrey & Memedovic, 2003; Sturgeon & Lester, 2004; Sturgeon & Van Biesebroeck, 2011; Thun, 2001); developing countries firms internationalization (Boisot & Meyer, 2008; Buckley et al., 2007; Child & Rodrigues, 2005; Dunning, 2006b; Luo & Tung, 2007; Mathews, 2006); and Chinese business system (Redding & Witt, 2009; Whitley, 1992, 1999b; Witt & Redding, 2013a, 2013b; Zhang & Whitley, 2013); this is not expected. This is why we decided to thoroughly understand the dynamic capabilities of one of such firms. Using an in-depth case study the analysis was performed with an integrative tri- perspective approach using institutional, industrial and firm levels. The starting point was on the understanding of the dynamic capabilities that the Chinese firm had since its incorporation until become a first-tier supplier to a transnational assembler followed by its internationalisation. Delving deeper into the internationalisation of the organisation, the study analysed, using the business system framework, how the Chinese firm was able to acquire and manage its new acquisition, which had superior tangible and intangible capabilities, and successfully overcame the predictable clashes that such a setting creates. This is in line with the call for exploratory research (Deng, 2012; Meyer, 2014; Narula, 2012; Ramamurti & Singh, 2009) due to the still infancy of the problem under study, the anecdotal descriptions, and the lack of reliable quantitative data. Our findings show us a Chinese firm with specific and divergent dynamic capabilities since its incorporation, when compared with the expected and typical companies, that should have emerged from the Chinese business system. A clear focus in a unique industry associated with the ambition, yet constraints, to become a global company, combined with the necessity of an industrial upgrade, and a deliberate strategy that allowed the firm to become a turnover company of €1 Billion in less than ten years. Furthermore, the long-term vision of the group and the use of a supportive partnering strategy for the post- acquisition period has been an essential component of the firm's success. Finally, we found that the firm has been joining disperse competences and resources it was lacking, using different dynamic capabilities, by grouping and directing them into a specific well-stated vision. From a theoretical perspective, these findings are particularly important since they do not support the institutional arbitrage literature nor accommodate the current different theoretical extensions on international business literature. From an empirical sense we explain that firms are not fate to integrate in a post M&A period and describe how this can be achieved.

Abstract:
碩士<br>高雄師範大學<br>視覺設計學系<br>99<br>Abstract Along with the advancement of technology, the types of animation have been developed from early 2D to current 3D. In addition, animated films have become an increasingly important role in the entertainment industry, so do other film-related products such as toys, DVDs, posters, etc. because of many a 3D animation, described as both a tool and an artistic style, released in the world. All in all, 3D animation can make many dizzily visual effects to let people have new vision resulting from computer technology. Therefore, this research is to explore the styles of transformation of 3D animations from a number of related films and to collect some clips from similar films to obtain some general classification. And then, the styles of analyses will be used in the creation of a 3D animated short film. The clips with many styles of transformation can be make more transformational animations have a sense of logic. Generally speaking, the contents of animation are coming from authors , who want to use transformation as a visual form to create a 3D animated film, the purpose of which is to express several social phenomena such as over-consumption, over-exploitation, and over-waste at a current consuming society. In addition, the theme of the film will convey over-development is not feasible; thus, human beings need to learn how to live with the nature in harmony because it is the only way to sustainably manage the earth and protect the environment we are residing only by slowing down the speed of destroying the nature because the nature needs enough time to recover. Create a 3D animation film, the expression of the high current consumption of the consumer society, over-exploitation, uncontrolled social phenomenon, the film will convey a theme is over-development is not feasible , man must learn to get along with nature, efforts to develop a natural resilience than the lower, to sustainable business earth, protect and maintain our living environment. It is an ultimate hope that by induction and integration, the verifications of transformational forms can offer other options to replace many laborious experiments regarding visual effects done by many succeeding researchers on 3D animations.

Abstract:
碩士<br>元智大學<br>應用外語學系<br>107<br>The oral defense is a significant requirement M.A. and Ph.D. candidates have to undergo to create a platform with which to present their written thesis as well as to allow examiners to make clarifications, ask questions, and offer suggestions. This stage, once accomplished by a candidate, is a milestone in their academic journey. This thesis explores the evaluative stances taken by examiners towards candidate theses within the context of academic arguments, specifically, oral defenses. The researcher adapts Martin and White’s (2005) and Hood’s (2006) Appraisal theory to identify Attitude and Graduation resources found in the speech of two kinds of examiners in the oral defenses. This study aims to present implicit and explicit evaluation as well as evaluative differences between internal and external examiners during five Taiwanese University Master’s Degree oral defenses held in English. Analysis of the data yielded interesting results pertinent to the field of Appraisal. First, Attitude (Appreciation) and Graduation (Focus, Force) resources were found to occur frequently throughout the five oral defenses. Second, explicit evaluation appears more frequently than implicit evaluation within the five oral defenses, revealing a ratio of 23:2 (23 explicit evaluations for every 2 implicit evaluations). Third, advisor tended to not speak much during the oral defenses, leading the researcher to focus on the speech of external and internal examiners only. The findings of this thesis have both theoretical and pedagogical implications that may prove useful for students in better understanding the expected language used in oral defenses in Taiwan.

Abstract:
碩士<br>元智大學<br>應用外語學系<br>95<br>In the field of EAP writing, the writing of the literature review (LR) section has long been considered as one of the most challenging tasks for graduate students. However, very few studies have ever focused either on thesis/dissertation writers’ difficulties in LR writing or on the examination of the textual features of thesis/dissertation LRs. In the library search, Kwan (2006) was the only study located that focuses on the analysis of the textual features of LRs. However, the samples examined in that study include only those written by native English-speaking doctoral students. It thus seems that very few researchers have ever analyzed thesis/dissertation LRs written by nonnative English speakers. Additionally, previous textual analyses of theses (or a certain section of a thesis) usually focused only on the final version of the thesis; no special attention has ever been paid to the textual development of different versions of LRs. Therefore, in order to be able to better understand various aspects of thesis LR writing, I closely observed the LR writing process of a Taiwanese master’s student in applied linguistics. In this case study, different versions of his LR were analyzed based on the move structure proposed in Kwan (2006). In addition, in-depth interviews with the informant at different stages of his LR writing were conducted to elicit his difficulties and his comments on various aspects of LR writing. The meetings between the informant and his advisor were also observed and tape-recorded. The results suggest that, unlike the complex and various move structures reported in Kwan’s study, the informant’s LR move structures tend to become simplified as the text developed. Additionally, the rhetorical strategies identified from the three moves imply the informant’s weakness in creating his research niche. Among the many LR writing difficulties found in this study, the lack of critical academic reading ability seemed to be the root of many other LR writing difficulties. Moreover, the informant’s perceived difficulties, such as weak critical thinking and synthesizing abilities, were also reflected in the texts through different uses of rhetorical strategies and various textual features. Pedagogically, the findings suggest that the EAP writing classes should incorporate more training of critical reading ability. For those subject teachers who eager to know how to give more effective instruction and guidance to their thesis/dissertation advisees, it is suggested that the training of basic discourse analysis skills through related workshops might be beneficial to them.

Abstract:

Liu, Hsiao-Shan, and 劉曉珊. "A Corpus-Based Study on the Employment of Reformulation in MA Theses by Taiwanese Learners of English." Thesis, 2014. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/936cm5.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>英語教學研究所<br>102<br>With English as the medium language of communication around the globe, EAP (English for Academic Purposes) research has increasingly gained its attention. For learners of EAP, it is necessary to be able to academically and persuasively produce written practices acknowledged by members of academic discourse community. Plenty amount of EAP studies, accordingly, have explored genre analysis, move analysis, and metadiscourse analysis of RAs (research articles). Up to date, limited attention has been given to another crucial academic written genre: master’s thesis (MA thesis), which is the first step young researchers must be engaged with in order to join the academic discourse community. Writing is the process and production of interaction among writer, readers, and discourse. Metadiscourse in academic writing refers to writer’s self-projection toward him/herself, readers, and disciplinary discourse community. Metadiscourse is crucially applied in academic writing to achieve writer preferred communicative purposes. Reformulation is a type of metadiscourse that functions to “supply additional information by rephrasing, explaining or elaborating what has been said to ensure the reader is able to recover the writer’s intended meaning” (Hyland, 2007a, p. 268). In other words, metadiscoursal reformulation markers are employed to facilitate comprehension and appropriateness of academic production. However, unlike other metadiscoursal research, little attention has been paid to reformulation markers, especially how they are used in MA theses as a research genre. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate reformulation markers and their discourse functions in MA theses. The present study integrates corpus analysis and discourse analysis to examine reformulation markers and their discourse functions in 60 MA theses by Taiwanese graduate students. There are 28 reformulation markers examined with a total of 3883 elicited reformulation data. A coding scheme modified from Hyland (2007a) is used to analyze discourse functions. The results show that there is a tendency toward the use of simple apposition reformulation markers and fixed connectors. The top five preferred markers in MA theses are parentheses, i.e., that is, especially, and particularly respectively, of which parentheses accounts for nearly half of the frequency. In the comparison of the distribution of reformulation markers with previous research (Hyland, 2007a), it is found that the distribution of MA theses in the present study (i.e. soft science fields) is actually more resemble to hard science fields. Regarding discourse functions, Expansion and Reduction together constitute about 80.00%, and Other 20.00%. It reveals the dynamic representation of metadiscoursal reformulation markers. It also pinpoints the importance and necessity of contextual discourse analysis in metadiscourse research. As for the subcategories of discourse functions, Specification and Presentation are used most frequently, while Implication and Explanation are least used. As compared to Hyland (2007a), the percentage that Paraphrase in MA theses is two times that of RAs, while the percentage of Specification in MA theses is only half of that in RAs. The result could be attributed to generic difference, graduate students’ familiarity with the application of such markers and their discourse functions. Mutual multifunctionality between reformulation markers and discourse functions found in the present study is corresponding previous studies (Adel, 2006; Hyland, 2005). It means that the realization of reformulation function is diverse, for it crucially depends on metadiscursive contextual factors. In the present study, parentheses and namely have more functions than the other markers in the top five reformulation markers. Moreover, both of that is (to say) and its form variant i.e. can trigger Expansion and Reduction function; however, Implication can only be performed by that is (to say) and Explanation by i.e. Furthermore, with regard to sectional distribution of reformulation markers and discourse functions, it is Literature Review, and Results and Discussions that account for the most frequency. It is also observed that the distribution of discourse functions and their subcategories in these two sections conforms to the move development in MA theses (Bitchener and Basturkmen, 2005, 2006; Kwan, 2006). Some research has revealed the importance of reader awareness construction and the advantages of explicit/implicit metadiscourse teaching in academic writing. It is, accordingly, suggested to combine implicit and explicit instruction of metadiscoursal reformulation markers in EAP curriculum design to equip learners with such essential linguistic knowledge which is highly valued in academic disciplinary discourse community. In addition, in EAP research, it is recommended to connect and to relate reformulation markers and discourse functions to research of move analysis in various disciplines, or even genres.

Abstract:
The City of Springfield, Massachusetts is one of the largest cities in western Massachusetts, and was established on the Connecticut River for trading and as a fur-collecting post. In 18th and early 19th century, it experienced an industrial boom and became a regional financial center. Springfield became a major railroad center and grew to become the regional center for banking, finance, and courts. However, in mid-19th century Springfield suffered due to the flooding of the Connecticut River and the disinvestment in industry. These resulted in an urban sprawl as people started moving away from heart of the city. Now, once again, the city is trying to revitalize its downtown and neighboring areas to attract people by improving different types of social and cultural amenities. In this thesis, the author studies the relation of the city with its natural asset ‘The Connecticut Riverfront’ which can be a great place to attract people towards the heart of the city. The author has also researched the various reasons causing this natural asset to be underutilized for several years. In addition, the author also explores the possibilities of connecting the Springfield downtown to the riverfront, providing safe and undisturbed access mainly to pedestrians, physically challenged people, and bike riders. Research shows that the existing transportation paths are the major barriers discouraging people from reaching the riverfront. In order to overcome this problem, a design solution is proposed including a safe, pedestrian-friendly link from the downtown area to the riverfront mitigating all the transportation paths such as highway, high speed traffic roads, and railway tracks. The proposed link will give encouragement to local artist and will also aim to boost local businesses by providing sites for museums, exhibitions, art galleries, food courts, and retail shops. This structure will not only improve the accessibility but it will also provide public open spaces where people can gather for various activities and can also enjoy the scenic view of the riverfront. In Addition, local people can also enjoy the water viewing restaurant and bar overlooking Connecticut River. Lastly, this connecting link lays the foundation for further development of the riverfront area due to increased accessibility to this asset.

Abstract:
Researchers explore various aspects related to art and urban life using terms such as cultural economy, the 'creative class', cultural clustering; and there are many more. Public art is one strategy, employed for any number of broader agendas spanning from economic aims to community identity. This study examines public art at the intersection of cultural planning strategy and community participation. A midsize New England city Pittsfield, Massachusetts, with a significant industrial mill heritage, provides a location from which to study public art within a specific context over a period of time spanning from 1970 to the present. Qualitative methods such as interviews, document review and survey of specific public art initiatives, both temporary and permanent, will help to uncover motivations and expectations that drive the development of public art projects. More knowledge about these purposes can lead to informative lines of questioning that may help planners and designers better understand the best application of public art in the landscape within a given community

Abstract:
11 me semble que Newmark exprime bien mon dilemme : « You can compare the translating activity to an iceberg: the tip is the translation - what is visible, what is written on the page - the iceberg, the activity, is all the work you do, often ten times as much again, much of which you do not even use.

Abstract:
Information regarding spawning site fidelity and movement patterns of the American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) is crucial for developing effective conservation and management strategies on the correct spatial scale. To investigate the spatial ecology of American horseshoe crabs, 75 adult animals were tracked off the coast of Chatham, Cape Cod, MA from June 2010 to November 2011 using acoustic telemetry. Two groups of horseshoe crabs were tagged in spawning habitats (separated by ~2.0 km) with differing commercial harvesting pressure: one group inside Stage Harbor, where harvesting is permitted and the other within a Marine Protected Area (MPA) where harvesting is prohibited. Network analysis revealed that horseshoe crabs exhibited fidelity to spawning habitat, but not necessarily to the habitat where they were initially tagged. Fifty-nine percent of horseshoe crabs tagged inside Stage Harbor were detected in the MPA and 13% of horseshoe crabs tagged in the MPA were detected inside Stage Harbor. Although horseshoe crabs were utilizing both spawning habitats, predictive modeling revealed little temporal overlap, suggesting that horseshoe crabs from the two spawning habitats represent local populations. Isolated and local populations are more susceptible to overexploitation than are larger populations with many migrants. To protect against overharvest and extinction of isolated and local populations, the correct identification of management units (MUs) must be a priority of fisheries managers. Horseshoe crab populations around Cape Cod, Massachusetts and New England behave differently, requiring the collection of more information so that conservation tools such as MUs or MPAs can be used most effectively.

Abstract:
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a pregnancy-induced metabolic disorder that affects 2-10% of pregnancies poses future risk for diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular disease in mother and child. However, few prospective studies have examined the effect of GDM on altered maternal and cord blood lipids, specifically HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol, both during and after pregnancy. We have evaluated the association between GDM and lipid metabolism in pregnant mothers and their infants using data from a prospective cohort study conducted at Baystate Medical Center’s Wesson Women and Infant’s Unit. GDM was assessed prenatally by 3-hr GTT blood samples and was confirmed by obstetrician review. Lipids were assessed via fasting and non-fasting blood samples obtained during 3-hr GTTs performed at 24-28 weeks of gestation and 6-8 weeks post-partum. Data for covariates were collected via an interview form administered at the time of recruitment. We used multivariable linear regression to evaluate the association between GDM status and maternal lipids during and after pregnancy as well as cord lipids. These study results inform future research on GDM as a risk factor for future metabolic disorders in mother and child.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>教育研究所<br>95<br>The large growing number of the population of the new immigrant women’s children gives rise to the wide spread attention of the social and education researchers to their studying performance and life-adjustment. This study adopts content analysis method to analyze and sort the 101 studies of MA theses and PhD dissertations during 2001-2006. The purpose of this study is to understand the content of the past studies about the new immigrant women’s children, including the trend, the object, the subject, the approach, the region and the result. Furthermore, standing on the conclusion, this study would give some suggestions to the governments and related organizations. There are several main conclusions and suggestions as follows: 1.Conclusions (1)The objects and the study approaches of these studies have more variety than before. (2)The number of the object of the studies about the new immigrant women’s children and their parents is more than others. (3)The subject of the studies about life-adjustment of the new immigrant women’s children’s is more than others. (4)Conducting the quantification study approach is more favorable than other choices. (5)The number of the studies in south of Taiwan is a little more than the north of Taiwan and much more than other regions of Taiwan. (6)The conclusions of 101 studies are positive in terms of self-concept, life-adjustment and interpersonal relationship. However, these studies still don’t have any final conclusion of studying performance and development of new immigrant women’s children. 2.Suggestions (1)The government should advocate the concept of the multi-culture education more often. (2)School should set up the policy to revise the student number in each class. Teachers should establish the good communication network to promote the interaction between the teachers and the parents of new immigrant women’s children positively. (3)In the future, the further studies would be expected to publish the object of the teachers, the comparative studies about foreign and Taiwanese students, and the study regions might focus on middle and eastern of Taiwan.

Abstract:
This paper conducts a critical comparison of the correspondence of Madame de Sévigné, Empress Marie-Thérèse of Austria and Joséphine Bonaparte. These women instruct their daughters through a writerly exchange that implements a remarkably similar use of language that indicates a “performance” of her maternal role, meant to implement a personal or political agenda that requires the daughter’s acknowledgement and reciprocation. This project explores theories of speech acts and subjectivity to conduct a literary analysis of the construction of the maternal figure in a historical context, its representation in the letters of each woman with their daughters, the motivations for a “performance” of the maternal role, and the subsequent characterization, reaction, and liberation of the daughter’s voice.

Hecimovic, Katrina M. "A Quantitative Analysis of the Impacts from Selected Climate Variables Upon Traffic Safety in Massachusetts." 2012. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/theses/755.

Full text
Abstract:
Current literature predicts that climate change may increase both the occurrence and severity of heavy rainfall events and winter precipitation in the Northeast United States. A potential increase in intense precipitation events related to climate change would theoretically also cause an increase in weather-related delays, increase in overall traffic disruptions, a substantive shift in travel behavior, and presumably a negative effect on safety and maintenance operations of highways. This current research study examines the existing impacts from both an operational and behavioral perspective of how weather events currently impact overall safety along routes in Massachusetts. A secondary objective of the research effort is to evaluate the extent to which this information is captured on the crash report form for subsequent use in safety analyses. Utilizing data from Massachusetts Department of Transportation, National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) and the University of Massachusetts Data Warehouse, crash statistics were examined during varied levels of weather events and compared with non-weather conditions. In addition, crash report forms were analyzed in comparison to NCDC weather data to determine the correlation between of the weather specific fields of the reports and to help determine if crashes were weather-related. The results from the investigation show how the character of precipitation events impact traffic safety including both occurrence and intensity levels and in conjunction with existing weather predictions the relationships developed in this study are useful in evaluating how changes in extreme precipitation events projected for the Northeast may impact drivers’ safety in the future.
