Abstract:
Background Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the most effective treatment that can cure acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). However, myeloablative conditioning (MAC) regimens cause high non-relapse mortality (NRM). Reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) regimens can reduce NRM but increase relapse incidence (RI) and as a result of it, has the similar overall survival (OS) to the MAC regimen according to the results of published clinical trials. Nevertheless, most of these clinical trials aren't high quality studies and the results of different studies are not consistent. To clarify whether RIC is as effective as MAC but safer than it for AML in CR and MDS we write the systematic review (SR). Methods Two reviewers independently comprehensively searched the related databases and websites and hand searched the reference lists. They also independently screened and evaluated the retrieved studies and then extracted data of included studies with the Cochrane Collaboration recommended tools. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. Hazard ratio (HR) was used to compare the OS, RI, leakemia free survival (LFS), non-relapse mortality (NRM), the incidence of acute graft versus host disease (aGVHD) and chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD) with the generic inverse variance method. The III-IV aGVHD and graft failure (GF) were compared with the Mantel-Haenszel method pooled risk ratio (RR). A two-sided P value of less than 0·05 was considered as significant difference. Heterogeneity was significant when the P value of the Chi-square test was less than 0·1 and/or the I2 value was more than 50%. Additionally we used the GRADE principles to evaluate the quality of evidence. The SR was registered on PROSPERO with ID of CRD42020185436. Results 7770 records were retrieved. We included 6 RCTs with 1413 participants comparing RIC with MAC. Our results showed there wasn't significant difference in OS (HR=0·95 95% confidence interval (CI, 0·64, 1·4), P=0·80) and RI (HR=1·18, CI (0·88, 1·59), P=0·28). Six RCTs and 1413 pariticipants were included of the two outcomes. The result of LFS was (HR=1·09, CI (0·69, 1·74), P=0·71) between RIC and MAC, three studies and 596 participants were included. The heterogeneity was significant in the OS, RI and LFS outcomes so we combined the three outcomes with the random effects model. RIC significantly reduced NRM than TBI/Bu based MAC (HR=0·53, CI (0·36, 0·80), P=0·002), four RCTs and 633 participants were included. On the other hand, RIC didn't reduce NRM than treosulfan based MAC with the results of (HR=1·67, CI (1·02, 2·02), P=0·04) compared with treosulfan 10 g/m2*3 days regimen and (HR=0·76, CI (0·45, 1·3), P=0·32) compared with treosulfan 14 g/m2*3 days regimen, both included only 1 RCT and 460 and 320 participants were included respectively. RIC had a trend to reduce the incidence of aGVHD compared to TBI/Bu based MAC (HR=0·79, CI (0·60, 1·03), P=0·08) and III-IV aGVHD (HR=0·61, CI (0·36, 1·04), P=0·07). RIC didn't show significant difference to treosulfan based MAC regimen on the two outcomes. The heterogeneity of the NRM, aGVHD, III-IV aGVHD was non-significant and we combined the three outcomes with the fixed effect model. The cGVHD was similar between RIC and MAC (HR=1·01, CI (0·79, 1·28), P=0·96), results of included results had significant heterogeneity and random effects model was used. GF was rare in both RIC (2·6%) and MAC (1·1%) arms. The quality of evidence on OS, RI and LFS was moderate and on NRM, aGVHD, cGVHD was high. Conclusions For AML in CR and MDS paitents, RIC don't increase OS and RI compared with MAC. RIC regimens reduce NRM than the TBI/Bu based MAC regimens. RIC regimens are also good choice of preparative regimens before HSCT for AML in CR and MDS. The treosulfan based MAC has a promising result in one RCT and even causes less NRM than RIC. Nevertheless, studies are scarce and more studies are needed to confirm the result. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
This paper discusses how to avoid plagiarism in a research paper. Avoiding plagiarism is part of a scientific writing ethic that always stated in any publication. Every writer should pay attention to their papers submitted to a journal or a scientific forum that they are free from unethical conduct. Writing a research paper needs overall accuracy especially in avoiding plagiarism in the paper that is to be published in a journal or to be presented at a certain scientific meeting, seminar or symposium. It is based on writers’ experience as a paper writer as well as a journal reviewer. The first application that the writers use is ‘checker’, a Mac computer application, used to check spelling and grammar. It assists the writers to check how misspelling and an ungrammatical inaccuracy in the writers’ papers. The second free application is ‘plagiarism checker’. Checking originality of a paper is essential and it is not too difficult to do today. It is freely accessible that plagiarism checker can be used to check how original the paper is. By visiting “Google” then write down ‘plagiarism checker’, it will appear ‘smallseatools’ and then the writers could choose and check how original the paper is. This application is freely accessed and helps immensely to check how original a paper is and how far a paper is free from plagiarism. The unoriginal phrase will be underlined and marked red and finally will be shown how inimitable the paper is. Plagiarism scan report which consists of the date of the report, plagiarism status, total words and total characters can be downloaded.

Abstract:
To support the goal of allowing users to record and retrieve information, this paper describes an interactive note-taking system for pen-based computers with two distinctive features. First, it actively predicts what the user is going to write. Second, it automatically constructs a custom, button-box user interface on request. The system is an example of a learning-apprentice software- agent. A machine learning component characterizes the syntax and semantics of the user's information. A performance system uses this learned information to generate completion strings and construct a user interface. Description of Online Appendix: People like to record information. Doing this on paper is initially efficient, but lacks flexibility. Recording information on a computer is less efficient but more powerful. In our new note taking softwre, the user records information directly on a computer. Behind the interface, an agent acts for the user. To help, it provides defaults and constructs a custom user interface. The demonstration is a QuickTime movie of the note taking agent in action. The file is a binhexed self-extracting archive. Macintosh utilities for binhex are available from mac.archive.umich.edu. QuickTime is available from ftp.apple.com in the dts/mac/sys.soft/quicktime.

Abstract:
Abstract. OpenDrift is an open-source Python-based framework for Lagrangian particle modelling under development at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute with contributions from the wider scientific community. The framework is highly generic and modular, and is designed to be used for any type of drift calculations in the ocean or atmosphere. A specific module within the OpenDrift framework corresponds to a Lagrangian particle model in the traditional sense. A number of modules have already been developed, including an oil drift module, a stochastic search-and-rescue module, a pelagic egg module, and a basic module for atmospheric drift. The framework allows for the ingestion of an unspecified number of forcing fields (scalar and vectorial) from various sources, including Eulerian ocean, atmosphere and wave models, but also measurements or a priori values for the same variables. A basic backtracking mechanism is inherent, using sign reversal of the total displacement vector and negative time stepping. OpenDrift is fast and simple to set up and use on Linux, Mac and Windows environments, and can be used with minimal or no Python experience. It is designed for flexibility, and researchers may easily adapt or write modules for their specific purpose. OpenDrift is also designed for performance, and simulations with millions of particles may be performed on a laptop. Further, OpenDrift is designed for robustness and is in daily operational use for emergency preparedness modelling (oil drift, search and rescue, and drifting ships) at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Abstract:
The problem that gave rise to this investigation was the conflict resulting from the dissonance between theoretical conscious options and the teaching practice that we have actually managed to implement when we took over the Portuguese Language classes for Cycle II groups of Brazilian Middle School at a state public school, soon after completing the Masters Degree in Education. Aimed at prioritizing practices that would favor the education of text readers and producers, not just copyists and decoders, we verified the interference of many aspects that had a negative impact on our practice. Thus, starting from the premise that the development of such skills requires a deliberate and continuous teaching during the whole basic education by teachers of different subjects, we have proposed to look after the answers for the following questions: what is the nature of the difficulties faced by teachers when trying to promote their students learning? Which contingencies related to teach reading and writing, deliberate or not, are present in the work of public school teachers, making the teaching and learning processes easy or difficult? To answer such questions, we undertook a study within the paradigm of the qualitative research in education, using, in some steps, procedures inspired in the educational ethnography (Ezpeleta and Rockwell, 1986; Fonseca, 1998; Erickson, 1989). The data analysis was grounded on essentially semantic criteria, in the light of content analysis parameters (Bardin, 1978). The works of Tiramonti (2005), Azanha (1990, 2004), Souza (2002, 2006) and Lapo (2005), among other authors, gave theoretical support to our investigation, insofar they propose to consider aspects of the broader context where teachers act, focusing on concrete situations from which sources of teachers uneasiness and easiness emerge that intervene in their practices. Data indicated that the classroom context is often not proper for the everyday work focused on the practices of reading and producing texts, in view of many factors: high number of students, difficulty of individualized follow-up of these students by teachers; need of managing the groups individual and collective demands; difficulties inherent to maintaining a certain order that allows performing complex and meaningful activities in classroom; divergent and often conflicting personal interests; sometimes scarce or precarious material resources; having to rush to manage multiple everyday tasks that eventually take large amount of class time in issues not directly related to teaching and learning of contents, among a multitude of other factors. Besides questions of objective order, aspects of subjective order do also interfere with concrete classroom situations, which involve knowledge and personal characteristics of teachers, their values, beliefs, needs and desires, which determine very peculiar ways of evaluating the context, acting and reacting to everyday contingencies. All these elements must be considered when improvement actions in public education are proposed. Thus, it is necessary to frame the expectations as to the role of school and teachers, which seem to be overestimated in the set of actions that the society must implement so that there is significant improvement in the teaching quality.

Cronin, Maurice. "From the image of the reader to the figure of the writer : a Pragmatic Approach to the Question of Aesthetics and Ideology in the Work of Flannery O'Connor." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCA128.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal aim of this dissertation is to provide a fresh approach to the vexed question of the relationship between the aesthetic and the ideological in the work of Flannery O’Connor. Unlike existing studies of this question in the critical literature, the approach adopted in this dissertation is based on the premise that it can best be treated in the context of a theory of literary discourse, one, in particular, that takes full consideration of the reflexive and performative dimensions of literary works. This theoretical assumption has considerable consequences for the study of the relationship between literary texts and the social, political, historical and literary contexts of their reception and circulation. In particular, it suggests that literary texts inscribe and negotiate the social and historical conditions of their circulation and reception, and that the question of their context should be approached first and foremost through the study of this textual inscription and negotiation. Insofar as it takes full consideration of the mediatory logic that such textual negotiation entails—in particular the mediating presence and effect of the figures of the reader and the author, the genre of the work, and the literary field—literary pragmatics will be seen to provide an approach which not only enables this study, but also reveals in a new light both the complexity and the singularity of Flannery O’Connor’s literary signature

Shmilovits, Liron. "Deus ex machina : legal fictions in private law." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/286225.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD dissertation is about legal fictions in private law. A legal fiction, broadly, is a false assumption knowingly relied upon by the courts. The main aim of the dissertation is to formulate a test for which fictions should be accepted and which rejected. Subsidiary aims include a better understanding of the fiction as a device and of certain individual fictions, past and present. This research is undertaken, primarily, to establish a rigorous system for the treatment of fictions in English law - which is lacking. Secondarily, it is intended to settle some intractable disputes, which have plagued the scholarship. These theoretical debates have hindered progress on the practical matters which affect litigants in the real world. The dissertation is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is a historical study of common-law fictions. The conclusions drawn thereform are the foundation of the acceptance test for fictions. The second chapter deals with the theoretical problems surrounding the fiction. Chiefly, it seeks precisely to define 'legal fiction', a recurrent problem in the literature. A solution, in the form of a two-pronged definition, is proposed, adding an important element to the acceptance test. The third chapter analyses modern-day fictions and recommends retention or abolition for each fiction. In the fourth chapter, the findings hitherto are synthesised into a general acceptance test for fictions. This test, which is the thesis of this work, is presented as a flowchart. It is the author's hope that this project will raise awareness as to the merits and demerits of legal fictions, de-mystify the debate and bring about reform.

Abstract:
In this study I have met three authors in a dialogue seminar on their literary work. The discussion, starting from texts by Lacan and Socrates, revolved around the dichotomy of personal and private, and how to benefit from personal material in one’s literary work. The three authors reflected on the writer Karl Ove Knausgård and the photographer Sally Mann, who both are working with their own immediate family as a motif. In Knausgård, you can find a strong and self-dissecting writer persona as a medium of creating recognition in the readers mind. In Sally Mann the metaphorical dimensions of this family motifs transforms them to images of much more general relevance than their private settings. On the subject of truth and story I also reflect on the different approaches that the authors Primo Levi, Viktor Frankl and Imre Kertész have on their experiences of the Holocaust. Finally the importance and relevance of metaphors as a way of getting a touch of one’s own private material is starting to be investigated.

Abstract:
Abstract In part because the Gate explored an experimental dramaturgy, its artistic directors Micheál mac Liammóir and Hilton Edwards often wrote, spoke and advocated for a drama that could move beyond realism. The analysis of Hilton Edwards’s dramatic commentary reaches from his early articles on dramaturgy right up to his encounter with the Berliner Ensemble in 1956 that influenced Edwards’s most elaborate statement on drama, The Mantle of Harlequin (1958). An important part of Edwards’s vision was his cosmopolitanism, his refusal to view drama within a restricted national framework. Nationality, on the other hand, was more important for the self-styled Irishman Micheál mac Liammóir. On close inspection, however, we find that his outlook did not differ much from Edwards’s. Mac Liammóir’s main concern was for Irish(-language) drama to absorb elements from abroad, to escape the straitjacket of Abbey realism and to become distinctive in a global context.

Abstract:
Silicon is an excellent transparent material for building IR micro-optical elements such as holographic and blazed gratings, and curvilinear micro-lenses. Shaping this material in 3D with mirror quality finish and single-digit microscale resolution is challenging due to its brittleness and high-melting point. To achieve these patterning characteristics, electron-beam grayscale lithography is typically selected to pattern a 2.5D feature onto a resist thin-film. Subsequently, the film features are transferred into the underlying silicon substrate by deep-reactive ion etching (DRIE) [1]. Small variations in the resist thickness lead to large shape distortions and reduced patterning repeatability. Further, the direct-write nature of e-beam lithography provides for slow throughput. Developing an alternative, parallel and scalable method to nanopatterning silicon with 2.5D geometrical control may impact emerging areas such as the design of sub-wavelength photonic and micro-optic elements for silicon photonics applications. Micro and nanoscale patterning of inorganic semiconductors (e.g. Silicon) requires traditional micromachining processes such as plasma-assisted etching (e.g. DRIE) and wet-etching (e.g. KOH etching). Neither of the aforementioned processes offer the capability to control the geometry in 3D with resolution in the nanoscale range. Thus, it is desirable to develop a low-temperature, low-stress and ambient approach to nanostructuring silicon in 3D. Wet etching approaches are good candidates for achieving such goal because they bypass the need for high-temperature processing and stressing materials beyond the elastic limit. Yet, they still rely on lithographical steps and offer limited sidewall control, restricting the scope of features it can produce. In recent literature, catalyst-based wet etching processes such as metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) have been shown to pattern high-aspect ratio structures in semiconductors [2–3]. Some researchers have achieved control over the etch profile and etching direction, generating a limited set of interesting 3D objects [4–6]. The degrees of freedom in MACE patterning are still highly constrained due to limited control of the catalyst motion. Additionally, thin-film based MACE relies on intermediate 2D masking steps to pattern the catalyst which are often lithographical. Thus, this indirect approach to patterning silicon increases lead time and processing costs. In this paper, Mac-imprint, a direct imprint configuration of MACE, is introduced to overcome these fundamental barriers. It relies on the use of a catalytic stamp immersed in the etchant and brought against a silicon chip to selectively dissolve it at contact points. Stamps can be reused multiple times to pattern substrates with lifetimes that are dependent solely on its chemical and mechanical degradation. This process is inherently non-lithographic and occurs at room temperature. As a demonstration of its high-resolution capabilities, silicon wafers were patterned with a sinusoidal wave whose pitch and amplitude were 1 μm and 250 nm, respectively. The patterned surface RMS error from the ideal surface was measured to be 13 nm. The key drawback of this approach is the generation of porous defects near the vicinity of the contact interface between stamp and substrate. Its spatial distribution is qualitatively discussed in the context of the diffusion model of MACE [7].

In ASME 2013 Conference on Information Storage and Processing Systems. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/isps2013-2813.

Abstract:
The areal data density of magnetic recording hard disk drives (HDDs) increases year by year, following a trend similar to Moore’s law. However, the increase is not unbounded and there are some physical limits. As the density increases, the size of each magnetic grain shrinks. Finally the magnetic grain will be no longer thermally stable due to what is termed superparamagnetism. Above this point, the magnetic storage would be not reliable because the magnetic grains’ orientations fluctuate randomly. To increase magnetic recording density to more than 1 Tb/in2 and break this limit, heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) is proposed. In HAMR systems, a more thermally stable magnetic material, one with higher coercivity, will be used as a recording layer. But the coercivity of this material at room temperature is so high that it is difficult for the writer to switch the magnetic orientation with current magnetic transducers. However, the coercivity drops sharply if the temperature is raised close to the Curie temperature. In HAMR systems, a laser is proposed as the means to heat the disk to the Curie point. Simultaneously the magnetic field is applied from the writer to switch the magnetic bits. The success of the magnetic switching is very sensitive to the media temperature [2]. If the temperature is too low compared with the Curie point, it will not be able to write any information into the media. Conversely, heating the media over the Curie point requires more energy and may bring a greater challenge for the head disk interface (HDI). It is very important to understand the local temperature distribution during the laser heating and to calibrate the laser power input for HAMR writing. Some work has been done to evaluate the temperature increase using both numerical and experimental methods [3, 4]. Tagawa et.al. observed the disk refractive index change during laser heating and compared it with the change under conventional oven heating. This is a good method to calibrate the laser power and get the average temperature but it has some limitations for getting the accurate temperature distributions because of the averaging effect for the refractive index measurement by ellipsometry.

Abstract:
Aerosol direct-write printing for mesoscale features has been commercially available since around 2002 from Optomec®. We have developed variances to this process first in Collimated Aerosol Beam-Direct Write (CAB-DW) for printing sub-10 μm features and in Micro Cold Spray for printing with solid metallic aerosols. These deposition tools offer extensive uses, but are still limited in certain applications by either line widths or the amount of overspray. Modeling of aerosol flow through micro-nozzles used in these applications yields a greater understanding of the focusing of these aerosol particles, and may provide a vehicle for new nozzle designs which will further enhance these tools. Recent modeling applied both Stokes and Saffman force to the aerosol particles. Under certain conditions particle rotation and Magnus force may also be necessary to accurately predict the aerosol particles. In this paper we will present our recent results of high-speed flow of 1–10 μm diameter aerosol particles through micro-nozzles in which the model includes all three forces (Stokes, Saffman, Magnus) of fluid-particle interaction, and a comparison of these results to experiments.

Abstract:
Professor M. Zhytaryuk’s review is about a book scientific novelty – a monograph by Professor M. Tymoshyk «Ukrainian journalism in the diaspora: Great Britain. Monograph. K.: Our culture and science, 2020. 500 p. – il., Them. pok., resume English, German, Polish.». Well-known scientist and journalism critic, Professor M. S. Tymoshyk, wrote a thorough work, which, in terms of content, is a combination of a monograph, a textbook and a scientific essay. This book can be useful for both students and practicing journalists or anyone interested in the history of the Ukrainian diaspora, Ukrainian journalism and Ukrainian culture. The author dedicated his work to Stepan Yarmus from Winnipeg, Canada – archpriest, journalist, editor, professor. As the epigraph to the book were taken the words of Ivan Bagryany: «Our press, born under the sword of Damocles of repatriation», not only survived and survived to this day, but also showed a brilliant ability to grow and develop. It was shown that beggars that had come to the West without money at heart can and know how to act so organized. It was also an example of how a modern «enbolshevist» and «denationalized» by the occupier man person is capable of a combined mass action».
