Abstract:
Sélima Lejri is similarly interested in the coexistence of long-established folklore beliefs in demonism and witchcraft and the emerging scientific etiologies propounded by the physicians of the time. Lejri shows that it is thanks to Edward Jorden’s A Briefe Discourse of A Disease Called the Suffocation of the Mother (1603) that the interpretations of demonic vexation started to give way to the rational alternative of hysteria. It was then that Shakespeare’s interest in the medical theories of physiology, mainly humorism, became palpable. This testifies to the considerable influence of Timothy

Abstract:
‘Return to tragedy’ begins by looking at the plays Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth. It is a tribute to the Globe playgoers that Shakespeare’s longest play—Hamlet—one of the most complex and intellectually ambitious ever written, was also one of his most popular. When the Lord Chamberlain’s Men became the King’s Men in 1603, Shakespeare’s comedies, and his work in general, took on darker tones and a new seriousness. Both Measure for Measure and All’s Well That Ends Well place their heroines in far more painful situations than those in which the central characters of the earlier comedies

Full text
Abstract:
This ground-breaking book reveals the prophetic, revolutionary vision that drives Shakespeare’s tragedies, tracing its unbroken development from its beginnings in the Henry VI plays and Shakespeare’s first tragedy, Titus Andronicus, right through to his last, Coriolanus. The four full-length studies at the heart of the book focus in depth on Shakespeare’s four greatest tragedies: Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth. Shakespearean Tragedy engages with each of these titanic masterpieces as a singular, complete work of dramatic art with its own distinctive concerns and critical challenges, but

Abstract:
What is (a) play? How do Shakespeare’s plays engage with and represent early modern modes of play – from jests and games to music, spectacle, movement, animal-baiting and dance? How have we played with Shakespeare in the centuries since? And how does the structure of the plays experienced in the early modern playhouse shape our understanding of Shakespeare plays today? Shakespeare / Playbrings together established and emerging scholars to respond to these questions, using approaches spanning theatre and dance history, cultural history, critical race studies, performance studies, disability stu

Abstract:
To interrupt, both on stage and off, is to wrest power. From the Ghost’s appearance in Hamlet to Celia’s frightful speech in Volpone, interruptions are an overlooked linguistic and dramatic form that delineates the balance of power within a scene. This book analyses interruptions as a specific form in dramatic literature, arguing that these everyday occurrences, when transformed into aesthetic phenomena, reveal illuminating connections: between characters, between actor and audience, and between text and reader. Focusing on the works of William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and John Fletcher, Michae
