Macdonald, Robert. "Music from the Dead: The Tune Making of John MacDougall." DigitalCommons@USU, 2009. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/414.

Abstract:
Cape Breton, Nova Scotia has been a stronghold of active and integrated community traditions of Scotch-Gaelic music and dance since it was settled by large numbers of Scottish emigrants in the nineteenth century. Though these emigrants brought with them an extensive store of tunes common to the Highlands of Scotland, the majority of them were carried in the collective oral memory. Consequently, the traditional Scottish repertoire of Cape Breton fiddlers steadily declined as generations of fiddlers who never learned to read or write music died. In the nearly two centuries that Scots have populated the island, there have been many gifted Cape Breton tune composers. Of these, certainly the most prolific is `old style' fiddler John MacDougall. To date his output numbers over forty thousand tunes. It is not just the staggering quantity of tunes however, that makes MacDougall's composing noteworthy, but his extraordinary claim that he does not write them himself. MacDougall insists that he simply records the tunes whole as they are given to him from the spirits of Cape Bretoners who have long since passed away. This paper examines the connection between MacDougall's tune `making' and the supernatural as an extension and a Christianized revision of a traditional Scottish motif that connects music making with fairylore. It suggests that MacDougall's modernized version of this motif serves to legitimize his large body of tunes to a community of fiddlers that, following in the footsteps of their forbearers, place enormous value on tune authenticity and correctness.

MacDougall, Colin James. "Public policy and physical activity : a South Australian study / Colin James MacDougall." 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/19828.

Abstract:

A study which investigates in a South Australian context: 1. What are the physical activity gaps between social groups and how do these gaps relate to health and the other benefits of physical activity? 2. What are the contraints on choices and what needs to be done to make the choices of people to increase moderate physical activity easier? 3. What is the role of the social environment in relation to moderate physical activity choices and what needs to be done to ensure supportive environments? The results show that physical activity frequently becomes the province of differents sectors of society at different times. Recent case studies demonstrate that policies about how governments organise their services lead to more fundamental changes than specific health policies.

Palangi, Amin. "Waking with Martyrs: An exegesis towards understanding & situating the filmmaker in a dramatically structured documentary." Phd thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/11791.

Full text
Abstract:
This exegesis offers an understanding of the practical PhD which led to the creation of the feature documentary film Waking with Martyrs, a film which follows an Iranian-Australian filmmaker’s journey into war sites of Iran. On the one hand, this study situates the personal, social, political and historical context which led to the construction of the journey and the film. While it examines the personal reasons for which the filmmaker embarked on the journey, it situates Iranian war sites as new sites of pilgrimages and highlights its political and social significance in Iran. It highlights the importance of these war pilgrimages within a religious and political landscape, not only arguing for their political importance in Iran, but also for their significance in defining parts of Iranian identity. The study examines how the journey offers insight into one of Iran’s least understood pro-government groups who embark on such kinds of journeys. It further examines the way the film could be seen as an agent of shifting perspectives and changes, not only for the filmmaker, but also for the subjects in the film, and the viewing audiences. On the other hand, this study situates the film through theories of documentary, examining in detail the processes, which led to the particular creation of the film. It examines the film within the larger scope of diasporic Iranian filmic landscape about the war and argues how this film could be seen as contributing to a new understanding of the situation within Iran.

Abstract:
Donald MacDougall was most concerned with economic policy. He was great public servant, his most important work being as a young man during the war, but with a great many other significant contributions during his long life. In 1948, Robert Marjolin, Secretary-General of the new Organisation for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) in Paris, invited MacDougall to be its first Economics Director. He was the most important writer and editor of the OEEC's Interim Report on the European Recovery Programme, as well as of the succeeding Second Report. MacDougall played a crucial role at the start of the OEEC's effort to free intra-European trade from the network of quantitative import restrictions that hampered it. He also recruited the first members of its Economics Directorate.

Abstract:
As soon as he became president, Bok set out to modernize Harvard’s central administration. His first move, recruiting a core of professional administrators, met with universal approval. In principle the administration simply provided services: financial, legal, health, information technology, food, real estate, personnel, development, government relations. But in practice this meant replacing Conant’s and Pusey’s low-keyed central “holding company” with a much more assertive, take-charge body of managers. As the number and agendas of the new bureaucrats grew, so did the tension between the faculty and the administration, between the more centralized direction of the University’s affairs and the venerable each-tub-on-its-own-bottom Harvard tradition. When Bok took office, the Harvard Corporation consisted of two recently elected academics, Charles Slichter of Illinois and John Morton Blum of Yale; two lawyers, Bostonian senior fellow Hooks Burr and Hugh Calkins of Cleveland; Socony-Mobil executive Albert Nickerson of New York; and Harvard’s treasurer, State Street banker George Bennett. By the time he left in 1991, all of them were gone, replaced by a heterogeneous mix ranging from Boston-New York businessmen (Gillette CEO Colman Mockler, Time publisher Andrew Heiskell, venture capitalist Robert G. Stone, Jr.) to Henry Rosovsky, the Corporation’s first Jewish fellow and its first Harvard faculty member since 1852, and Washington lawyer Judith Richards Hope, the first female fellow. Brahmin Boston had no representative on the Corporation that Bok bequeathed to his successor. During this time, too, three new treasurers came in quick succession: George Putnam, another State Street banker; Roderick MacDougall, a Bank of New England executive; and Ronald Daniel, a former partner in the conspicuously non-Old Boston consulting firm of McKinsey and Company. Across the board, old boys gave way to non-Brahmin newcomers. As both Harvard and its bureaucracy grew, the Corporation became more detached from the mundane realities of University governance. Streaming in from points south and west, the fellows met every two weeks on Monday mornings for a heavy schedule of reports, discussions, and meetings with the president and his chief administrative officers.
