Abstract:
The Republic of North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are friendly countries that have no outstanding issues and have been continuously improving their cooperation in all spheres of socio-political life and the economy on both bilateral and multilateral levels since their independence in 1993 to the present (2022). The ties and cooperation between these two states and their citizens have deep historical roots. The territory of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of North Macedonia has been part of the same state entities for more than five centuries, in various, but also very similar positive or negative contexts and processes. This has allowed for not only cooperation but also understanding and mutual support among the people of North Macedonia (Macedonians, Bosniaks, as well as Albanians, Turks, and others) and the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Certainly, the Bosniaks in North Macedonia are the most significant factor in connecting the two states. Unlike Macedonians and other people of North Macedonian origin in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who are in smaller numbers and have a very short continuity from the time of the former Yugoslavia, the Bosniaks are part of Macedonia's distant past, as well as its contemporary Macedonian reality. Without them, no process or Macedonian story would be complete. Therefore, in addition to a chronological overview of the establishment and development of bilateral relations between the two countries since their independence, this paper will also focus on the position of Bosniaks in North Macedonia and Macedonians in Bosnia and Herzegovina after independence. Although there are very important historical processes before independence, I believe it is more important to pay attention to the current moment, which is the goal of this academic conference.

Abstract:
The senseless name dispute and the renaming of the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia, which was perceived by the Western countries as a «technical obstacle» to the country's NATO and EU accession, was in fact a part of the Macedonian southern neighbor’s long-term plan to erase the Macedonian identity by violating the Macedonian people's right to national self-determination. Since, any change in the name of a country automatically entailed consequences for the national and cultural identity of the Macedonians - the titular people of the country. Russian diplomacy closely followed the events in the country and thoroughly knew the essence of the political crisis that began in 2015 which eventually ended with the renaming of the country against the will of the Macedonian people. The Russian decision to retreat from the intention to challenge the Prespa agreement in the UN Security Council as contradictory to the international law and violating Macedonian 1991 Constitution questioned the role of the Russian diplomacy in upholding the principles and norms of the rule of international law in the world. The subsequent recognition of Macedonia’s new name by Russia forced many in the Republic of Macedonia to include Russia, an indisputable fighter for justice in a multipolar world, in the list of countries involved in the national “depersonalization” of Macedonia, which appeared on the political map of Europe as a result of the anti-fascist liberation movement of the Macedonian people.

Abstract:
In the early 1990s, the Greek diaspora experienced an exceptional period of political mobilization, sparked by the international community’s recognition of the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia as an independent state. While there is little contestation that Macedonia exists as a geographic area, who can claim Macedonian history and ethnic identity is much more problematic. The struggle to claim Macedonian identity has been fought between groups located in Greece, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria, and the Greek and Macedonian diasporas, each group proclaiming themselves the true Macedonians. In the diaspora, this struggle has manifested itself through newspaper editorials, letter-writing campaigns, lobbying efforts, festivals, and political rallies.

Abstract:
Macedonia started its transition from a command to a market economy after its declaration of independence in 1991 from the former Yugoslavia. In 1991, ethnic Albanians abstained from voting for the first Macedonian constitution. Soon claims of ethnic Albanians in Macedonia started to aim at proportional representation in all political institutions, more education in the Albanian language at the university level and changes to the constitution proclaiming Macedonia to be a multi-ethnic country made up, on an equal basis, of Macedonians and Albanians. In 2001, immediately after the Macedonian parliament ratified a border treaty with Serbia, ethnic Albanians clashed with Macedonian armed forces. The clashes ended with the signing of the Ohrid Framework Agreement (OFA) in 2001. Decentralization was a main preferential policy choice out of the OFA. This paper estimates the efficiency of Macedonian municipalities by using the Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). We hypothesise that ethnic fragmentation may have a negative impact on the efficiency of Macedonian municipalities. We also hypothesise that political variables at municipalities in Macedonia also have impact on the municipal efficiency.

Abstract:
The political situation of Turks in the Republic of Macedonia and Turkish-Macedonian relations The Republic of North Macedonia is a small country on the Balkan Peninsula, which is characterized by the accumulation of many national and ethnic and religious groups in a small area (25 713 km2) – among them are Macedonians, Albanians, Turks, Roma, Vlachs, Serbs or Bosnians, as well as other smaller nationalities and ethnic groups. This article aims to present the origins of the Turks in Northern Macedonia, and at the same time to indicate the reasons for emigration from these areas and to present political parties and organizations representing the interests of Turks and their most important activities for the benefit of this minority. The article also analyze Turkish-Macedonian relations ranging from the proclamation of Macedonian independence to the accession of the Republic of Northern Macedonia to the structures of the NATO in 2020.

Abstract:
The Process of Stabilization of the Macedonian Nation in a Complex Geopolitical SituationThe article considers two main stages of the development of national identity of the Macedonians which were the basis for their own independent state. The first stage, which took place at the turn of the twentieth century, was connected with activities of Macedonian intellectuals and the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization. However, in the second stage – which occurred in the second half of the twentieth century (when Macedonia was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) – the authorities of the Yugoslavian federation paradoxically played an important role as they maintained a sense of national autonomy among the people of Macedonia. Following the Macedonian declaration of independence in November 1991, the mood of instability developed in the state. This mood resulted mainly from the claims of the neighbouring countries and the demands of the Albanian minority. The complex geopolitical situation of independent Macedonia had a stimulating influence on the consolidation of national identity of the Macedonians and contributed to increasing the importance of national factions in the state.

Abstract:
Abstract While recent studies on Macedonia have mostly focused on ‘Skopje 2014’ as a uniquely excessive project of nation-building, this article analyses local developments in monument culture elsewhere in Macedonia. Disentangling the processes of nation-building since the Ohrid Agreement of 2001, the author distinguishes three coexisting, but competing, repertoires of monument culture, namely a Yugoslav, a Macedonian, and an Albanian one. Each repertoire has been closely associated with ethnicity and the legitimation of ethnopolitical claims, as well as party politics and ideology. The past has continued to divide Macedonians. The author argues that these divisions in Macedonian monument culture reflect the competing and diverging Albanian and Macedonian historical narratives, and amount to effectively mutually exclusive ethnic and ideological nation-building efforts in post-Ohrid Macedonia.

Abstract:
The greatest amount of evidence about the reign of Alexander I of Macedon is contained in the work of Herodotus. The ancient historian is the only author who gives a detailed description of Alexander's policy during the Greco-Persian wars. This article is dedicated to several questions. First of all, the author discusses the question of what sources Herodotus could use for his stories about the Macedonian king. The author raises the question of the possible personal stay of Herodotus in Macedonia and comes to the conclusion that the most presumable point of view that Herodotus visited Macedonia in the middle of the 5th century BC. The ancient author could have the possibility to speak directly with Alexander and get detailed description of his policy during the Greco-Persian wars.An equally important question remains the question of what Alexander's propaganda was. The paper examines the evidence of Herodotus about Alexander, the direct speeches of the Macedonian king, as well as the numismatics of Alexander's time. The general idea of Alexander's speeches boils down to the assertion that the Macedonians have Greek origin. Among other things, the first mention of the legend about the Greek origin of Argead dynasty appears in the work of Herodotus. In the time of Alexander, iconography with Greek symbols appears on Macedonian coins. The author comes to the conclusion that Alexander's propaganda was aimed at proving the Greek origin of the Macedonians and improving relations with the Greek world. To a greater extent, propaganda was directed precisely at the citizens of Athens, since Macedonia continued to be an important economic partner of this policy.

Abstract:
Elizabeth Donnelly Carney is one of the most renowned scholars on Ancient Macedonia. Carney’s research has contributed to open the studies about Ancient Macedonia to the scope of Gender Studies. Her influence in many modern interpretations concerning the complex relations of power and court network in Argead Macedonia also includes topics like mutiny, social performances (like royal banquets) and court groups (like the Royal Pages). Her scope is wide, and she usually focuses on concrete topics from multiple perspectives. Books like Women and Monarchy in Ancient Macedonia, or the recent Eurydice and the Birth of Macedonian Power (2019) (completing the works devoted to three generations of Macedonian Royal women with her Olympias (2006) and Arsinoë of Egypt and Macedon: A Royal Life (2013)) are now must-to works for world-wide researchers concerning Ancient Greece and Macedon. Among her many skills, the Editorial Board of Karanos wants to remark her kind proximity and her usual predisposition to comment and help, with her experience, to improve discussions, projects and papers with admirable knowledge.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the Macedonian conflict in 2001 from the perspective of everyday life. In the late winter radical nationalist militants National Liberation Army started a limited warfare against the government forces of Republic ofMacedonia. The NLA started fighting in the name of the Albanian minority and posed a serious security threat and polarised the Macedonian society on bases of ethnicity. The conflict in 2001 failed to produce ethnic war. Many factors contributed towards preventing the outbreak of civil war. Most important of all was the existence of the native model ofmulticulturalism. This model of multicultural accommodation is unexplored and this thesis is built around it. Various sources of evidence are brought together to explain it and to explain the ethnopolitical setting. The notion of reflexivity is central topic of discussion, or a key to understanding this multicultural model. First, reflexivity is investigated from the perspective of anthropological methodology and theory and second, reflexivity is explored in the everyday practice. In both guises reflexivity is taken to mean awareness ofthe potential power relations and as strife to balance, or cancel them. Reflexivity should be applied beyond the awareness and acknowledgement offieldworkers' presence in the field and anthropologists' has far greater impact in the field, to the extent that the anthropologist is the field. In the Macedonian setting of great ethnic mixture reflexivity is practiced in the everyday life as a guiding principle of balancing power relations that are based on the concept of mutual respect on individual level. The informal political organization of both l\1ac~donians and Albanians, expressed in the idiom ofkinship, that I set to explore before the violence erupted in the middle ofmy fieldwork, is very strong and competes with the bureaucratic mechanisms ofthe state and also minimised the efforts for ethnopolitical mobilisation. The multicultural practices based on respect and the strong informal political organization prevailed over the politics applied in its most radical form.

Thiessen, Ilka. "T'ga za jug - Waiting for Macedonia : the changing world of young female engineers in the Republic of Macedonia." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1999. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1597/.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis is concerned with the social changes a group of young female engineers experience in The Republic of Macedonia during the break-up of Yugoslavia. From my studies, I infer that this group of informants is representative of those most affected by their country's changes: they represent the young, urban educated elite that is influenced most directly by the political changes of independent Macedonia. The work has two major aims. First, it provides a detailed ethnography of the search by my informants to understand and define the new circumstances of The Republic of Macedonia. I conclude that the Fall of Yugoslavia and Macedonia's 'forced' independence created a vacuum of meaning for its population. The second objective of this work is to examine critically a group of young female engineers and to contrast other works written about Macedonia and the Balkan region which primarily emphasised continuity and tradition. With their aim of recognition by Europe, Macedonia tries to establish itself as a European country. Consumerism and body culture emphasise this. However, some Macedonians seek to retain aspects of the recent socialist past. Macedonia, during my research, was still governed by a democratically elected socialist party that adhered to socialist values. In their search for what Macedonia could be, the past, the world of the grandparents' generation and the village and the differences between the Albanian and Slavic populations gain new importance. This search is introducing some previous members of the elite, female engineers of Yugoslavia, to a new idea of what Macedonia could be, while incorporating elements of a modem, global society with Macedonia's socialist and pre-socialist peasant past. This group of informants shows that Macedonia is in the midst of creating a new, and rather different, identity for itself which incorporates socialist ideology, a peasant past and a modern European dream.

Abstract:
The present thesis focuses on Classical and Hellenistic figured tombstones from ancient Macedonia, mainly free-standing stelai and reliefs intended to be incorporated into larger architectural settings. Its aim is to provide a comprehensive study which looks at the tombstones both as part of the sculptural art and painting of Macedonia, as well as a strand of the sources available for the writing of ancient Macedonian social history. The geographical area and the chronological period under study are defined in the Introduction, where prior literature on the subject is also briefly overviewed. The material is then first looked at according to period, discussion focusing on chronological and stylistic groupings, as well as on the norms regarding selfrepresentation: pre-Classical tombstones eCho 2), tombstones of the 5th C. BC eCho 3), tombstones of the 4th C. BC eCho 4), tombstones of the 3rd_l st C. Be eCho 5). The archaeological .context of the tombstones and the evidence provided by their inscriptions are discussed in Ch. 6. The Appendix provides an overview ofthe state of cemeteries excavations in Macedonia up to now, while the tombstones under study are described in detail in the Catalogue.

Oustinova-Stjepanovic, G. "Performative failure among Islamic mystics in urban Macedonia." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1334591/.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on the field research among practitioners of mystical Islam in urban Macedonia, this thesis examines a modality of failure to perform one's religion. Having initiated a reform of their ancestral religious tradition, these practitioners experienced a peculiar dissatisfaction with their own accomplishments as Sufi saints. Self-critically, aspirants observed that their flair to perform rituals and to commit to spiritual exercises and techniques of ethical self-fashioning fell far short of the prototypical examples of the Prophet Muhammed and the ancient Sufis. Theological books about the lives of these figures captured people's intellectual imagination. These texts did not, however, yield concrete performative technologies that would enable aspirants to succeed in replicating the spiritual ontologies of the dead Muslim saints in the contemporary nation-state of Macedonia. People were convinced that their spiritual advancement depended on the enactment of theological propositions in formal rituals and interpersonal relations, yet they felt hindered by not knowing the 'correct' experiential methods of ritual training and ethical self-work (autopoesis) and by their physical disengagement from religious practices. Aspirants described themselves as incomplete mystics and proclaimed that they had failed to become intensely religious beings. Through detailed ethnography, this thesis explores people's experiences of performative failure and illuminates the themes of theological learning, ritual founderings, unavailability of bodies for rituals and religious training, and the search for the lost method of self-transformation into a saint. Performative failure is defined as a postponement of achievement under infelicitous historical conditions. Drawing on a variety of anthropological theories and comparative ethnographic cases, this thesis aims to contribute new ethnographic material to the anthropology of religion and to articulate critical insights into the difficulties of turning theology into performances. Furthermore, the thesis examines the possibility of failure that hovers over people's reflexive efforts to actualize their ambitions and desires and argues that failure is a productive analytical concept for the understanding of aspirations and barriers to excellence.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the dual challenges posed by the Covid-19 crisis and the Ukrainian crisis and their profound impact on the tourism sector in North Macedonia. As these crises disrupted global travel patterns and tourism dynamics, North Macedonia's tourism industry faced challenges. Through an in-depth analysis of empirical data, this paper sheds light on the resilience and adaptability of tourism companies in North Macedonia during these crises. The research explores the measures adopted by North Macedonian government to mitigate the adverse effects of these crises. Moreover, it examines the role of regional economic cooperation among Western Balkan countries in enhancing the tourism sector's resilience and recovery. Findings reveal the pivotal role of regional cooperation in creating a supportive framework for tourism companies in North Macedonia and neighboring countries. Leveraging their shared cultural, historical, and geographical ties, these nations have demonstrated the potential to foster sustainable tourism growth and strengthen economic ties. This paper contributes to the understanding of crisis management in the tourism sector, offering valuable insights for policymakers, businesses, and academics interested in the Western Balkans region's economic development and tourism resilience strategies. The research underscores the importance of collaboration in overcoming crises and capitalizing on shared opportunities, ultimately paving the way for a more robust and resilient tourism industry in North Macedonia and the broader Western Balkans region

Abstract:
Slowly but surely, three decades have passed since private security appeared as a new and unknown security phenomenon in Macedonia. Decades full of ups and downs, successes and lessons to be learned, a period of time sufficient to strike a line and summarize the experiences and perspectives of its future development. Besides being a new security phenomenon, private security was established as a new and indispensable part of the security system of the country. Today, private security in Macedonia is an integral and inevitable segment of the contemporary security reality, reaching a certain level of development. The paper deals with highlighting and assessing the development of the private security in Macedonia in the last three decades of its advent, primarily focusing on the development of private security activity and private detective activity. Theoretically, the paper is based on structural and functional theory of private security, while methodologically, the paper uses comparison of scientific, professional and legal sources as well as conceptual content analysis. The aim of the paper is to highlight the experiences of the development of Macedonian private security so far and on that grounds to determine the possible future perspectives of its development. The findings of the paper could be of use to scholars and professionals in the sphere of private security, in terms of better understanding of Macedonian private security, as well as in designing and implementing security policies in this field. Abstract:
Since receiving candidate status for the European Union (EU) in 2005, North Macedonia’s accession process has encountered several significant delays. Initially, Greece obstructed the country’s EU path due to a long-standing dispute over its name. This deadlock was resolved through the 2018 Prespa Agreement, a landmark compromise that resulted in constitutional amendments and the official renaming of the country to North Macedonia. Following this agreement, it was widely anticipated that the accession process would resume according to established EU protocols. However, in 2019, further delays arose due to the introduction of a revised EU accession methodology. Even after the adoption of this methodology, Bulgaria imposed a veto, citing North Macedonia’s failure to adhere to the 2017 Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness, and Cooperation. This veto remained in place for two years, until the introduction of the French proposal. With this, Bulgaria agreed to lift its veto, while North Macedonia committed to enacting additional constitutional amendments, specifically the inclusion of ethnic Bulgarians in the preamble of its Constitution. The French proposal formally started North Macedonia’s EU accession process. Nevertheless, to progress beyond the initial phase, the country must fulfill its commitment to constitutional reforms. The proposal itself, and the ongoing delay in implementing these amendments have further deepened the political polarization within North Macedonia. This paper examines the essence of Bulgaria’s demand for constitutional amendments, which is viewed by some as a “simple legal modification” and by others as a form of “Bulgarian diktat” or/and “Bulgarization.” Although the enhanced enlargement methodology has rendered the accession process more predictable and credible, it has not dispelled the uncertainties facing North Macedonia. The analysis suggests that North Macedonia will need to adjust its positions on identity and historical issues with Bulgaria throughout the negotiation process, in line with the principles of the 2017 Treaty and the European Union’s emphasis on fostering good neighborly relations as an essential element of the enlargement process.

Abstract:
Almost five decades have passed since social pathology appeared as a new scientific discipline in Macedonian higher educational system, in particular, at the Faculty of Security. Decades of research and education, achievements and lessons to be learned. Although the history is relatively short, it is a period of time sufficient to strike a line and summarize the experiences and perspectives of its future development. As a sociological discipline, social pathology slowly but surely breaks its way to scientific prominence and deserved status in the contemporary Macedonian higher educational system. The paper deals with highlighting and assessing the development of the social pathology in Macedonia in the last almost five decades of its advent, focusing both on research as well as on educational developments. Theoretically, the paper is based on structural and chronological assessment of developments in the education and research in this field, while methodologically, the paper uses historical and comparative method, as well as content analysis of scientific and professional sources. The aim of the paper is to highlight the experiences of development of social pathology in Macedonia so far and on those grounds, to determine the possible future perspectives of its development. The findings of the paper could be of use to scholars and professionals in the sphere of social pathology, in terms of better understanding the place, role and importance of social pathology in the contemporary Macedonian research and education in the field of social and security sciences. Abstract:
North Macedonia is a country in which the variation in local electoral participation belongs to the highest in Europe (coefficient of variance 0.148 in 2013 and 0.200 in 2017, even 0.214 in 2021). This paper tries to explain this variation through series of regression models including several independent variables. In additional to typical factors taken into account in such analysis in earlier studies (population size of local community, competitiveness of elections, and social status of residents) the country specific variable—ethnic composition of population in individual municipalities is taken into account. In individual models dependent variables are: 1) turn-out in local elections, 2) difference between turn-out in national and local elections, and 3) competitiveness of local elections measured by the difference between votes for two major candidates in mayoral elections. In most of North Macedonian municipalities there is a clear domination of one ethnic group (usually either Macedonian or Albanian), but there are also communities in which there is an almost equilibrium with two or more ethnic groups of comparable size. The paper investigates how ethnic composition modifies the model based on “conventional” explanatory variables. Those “ethnically balanced” municipalities are in a special focus of the paper. Empirically the paper investigates turn-out in 2013 and 2021 elections. The reason of including 2013 results in the analyses is related to particular time of voting, very close to national holidays in most of West European countries, which has enabled casting vote by numerous “non-resident citizens” and boosted overall turn-out. Since participation of „non-resident population“ may change the ethnic balance in some of North Macedonian municipalities, taking into account timing of elections seems to be very important. Overall results suggest that the balanced ethnic structure may have some importance for voters’ mobilization, however its role is less important than it might be expected. The most important explanatory variables are population size of municipality (similar to factors found in other countries) as well as proportion of ethnic Macedonians (ethnic Macedonians seems to be more attached to state institutions, and their civic activeness is higher than in case of other groups).

Abstract:
The Republic of North Macedonia in 2021 marks not only 30 years since the Declaration of Independence and the peaceful separation from the former SFRY but also 20 years since the signing of the Ohrid Framework Agreement (OFA). Next year Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) will also mark the 30th anniversary of the Independence Referendum, which in turn was an introduction to the three-and-a-half-year civil war (1992-1995), which ended with the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement (DMD). With both agreements, in the Republic of N. Macedonia and BiH, elements of consociational democracy were introduced in their constitutional order and political system. The two countries in science are categorized in the group of consociational democracies of the new wave, even though BiH is a “complex” and the Republic of N. Macedonia is a “minimalist” consociational model. The theoretical literature dealing with the consociational model of democracy has long focused on several issues. One of them is the question about the needs of certain favorable conditions for its application. The following can be pointed out as favorable factors for the application of this model of democracy: relative equilibrium among the segments; the existence of moderate multi-party and representative party system; small country size; crosscutting cleavages; overarching loyalties; segmental isolation and federalism; traditions of elite accommodation. Some authors rightly note that the assumed favorable conditions for consociation should be further explored by analyzing some successful and unsuccessful examples of consociation. The purpose of this paper is to make such an analysis, which will be done by comparing the favorable conditions for the application of the consociational model in countries such as BiH and the Republic of N. Macedonia. It is necessary to emphasize that certain consociational elements were present in the political system of BiH while it was part of the SFRY and in the Republic of N. Macedonia the same were nurtured in the first decade of Macedonian independence (until the signing of the OFA in 2001), but more through political pragmatism than through systematically guaranteed solutions. Abstract:
Cryptocurrency as a novel concept in finance, has lately attracted wide attention in the financial market. However, there is a divided opinion when it comes to embracing or ignoring them. Some are optimistic about their future, and others believe that the skepticism that surrounds them will strongly contribute to their disappearance from the market. The first part of the paper will give a brief background about cryptocurrencies and their associated advantages and disadvantages. The second part of the paper will focus on providing an overview of the cryptocurrency situation in North Macedonia, where they are currently unregulated. Since no legislation would protect consumers in case of fraud, the proper regulatory framework in this sphere is an urgent problem that requires immediate attention. Additionally, this paper will offer a small insight into other Western Balkan countries in this regard, where the situation is like in North Macedonia.

Abstract:
North Macedonia has successfully conducted a national census after a twenty-year hiatus. The census shows a catastrophic demographic decline and a sharp fall in the proportion of ethnic Macedonians. It has also had an important influence on the debate regarding the country’s ethnic composition and powersharing mechanism, which has been going on for two decades. The results of the census give new momentum to the political cohabitation dictated by the Ohrid Framework Agreement and the incessant fights between the representatives of the Macedonian and Albanian communities for more political influence and resources. Despite the positive reactions of the government and the praise of the international community, the controversies that have emerged regarding the results, the negative attitude of the parties, and the hostile behaviour of many political actors will further deepen the existing political fault lines and may lead to renewed ethnic conflicts.

Abstract:
This rapid literature review collates available evidence on the causes and consequences of air pollution in the Republic of North Macedonia (here after North Macedonia). It draws on a diverse range of sources from multiple academic disciplines and grey literature. The literature highlights that North Macedonia is considered to have some of the worst air quality in the West Balkans, and consequently some of the worst globally. Air pollution is a significant problem in North Macedonian cities and urban centres with exposure to high levels of particulate matter (PM) a particular issue. The PM2.5 size fraction is the focus of many air pollution studies because it is associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, it is also the focus of this review. This review identifies a limited but expanding evidence base discussing air pollution in North Macedonia. Studies are principally focussed on the capital city (Skopje) and ambient (outdoor) air pollution. There is a limited literature that discusses air quality issues outside of the capital and a dearth of evidence on household (indoor) air pollution.

Abstract:
Bulgaria’s veto on opening North Macedonia’s accession talks with the EU has internationalized a bilateral historical dispute that is obscure and perplexing to international observers. This article explores the genesis of this historical dispute and how it has been rationalized by the current Bulgarian political and academic elites. The dispute concerning the origin of the Macedonian ethno-linguistic identity is a legacy of both Bulgaria’s nation-building processes and its politics of continued grievances about the “injustice” done to Bulgaria and Bulgarians ever since the annulment of the San Stefano Treaty in 1878. Bulgaria’s current formulation of the problem was canonized in the 1960s by its communist leader, Todor Zhivkov, and continues to shape Bulgaria’s foreign policy toward North Macedonia.
