Abstract:
Abstract While recent studies on Macedonia have mostly focused on ‘Skopje 2014’ as a uniquely excessive project of nation-building, this article analyses local developments in monument culture elsewhere in Macedonia. Disentangling the processes of nation-building since the Ohrid Agreement of 2001, the author distinguishes three coexisting, but competing, repertoires of monument culture, namely a Yugoslav, a Macedonian, and an Albanian one. Each repertoire has been closely associated with ethnicity and the legitimation of ethnopolitical claims, as well as party politics and ideology. The past has continued to divide Macedonians. The author argues that these divisions in Macedonian monument culture reflect the competing and diverging Albanian and Macedonian historical narratives, and amount to effectively mutually exclusive ethnic and ideological nation-building efforts in post-Ohrid Macedonia.

Abstract:
Abstract The name dispute between Republic of Macedonia and Greece manifests itself in Greece’s objections to the use of the noun “Macedonia” or the adjective “Macedonian” to refer to any other ethnicity, culture, tradition and history except Greek. In order to promote itself as a sole claimant to the name, Greece has constructed a discourse which legitimizes its exclusive right to it, while at the same time it delegitimizes such right to Macedonia. However, this discourse does not only deny Macedonia the right to the name but it also denies Macedonia the right to discuss identity issues, while at the same time it obliterates Macedonian presence in the discourse in any relation to the disputed term. In this respect, this study seeks to analyze the specific linguistic strategies underlying these discursive effects.

Abstract:
This review sheds light on the glossary and structure of the vocabulary entry (the defi ni- tion of the headword, examples, cross references) in the “Dictionary of Macedonian Traditional Culture” (Skopje, 2016; 564 p.) by Liljana Makarijoska. The dictionary is com- pared with other Slavic lexicographic publications of similar type, based on Bulgarian and all-Slavic folk traditions. The author chooses dialectal words from the vocabulary of material and spiritual Macedonian culture as headwords, paying attention not only to single words, but to verbal formulae as well (curses, good wishes), presenting them as special entries. Each entry contains interpretation of the corresponding notion in the folk tradition of Macedonia. Thus, the dictionary occupies the middle-ground between dialectal and encyclopaedic.

Abstract:
The author analyzes the images of the Ukrainian and Macedonian languages in the political cultures of Internet users in Russia and Bulgaria. The non-academic concepts of the history and status of the Macedonian and Ukrainian languages are analyzed, and the dependence of such theories on the political and ideological situation is shown. It is assumed that the analyzed interpretations of the Ukrainian and Macedonian languages historically go back to the Russian and Bulgarian nationalisms, which deny the existence of separate Macedonian and Bulgarian languages, which automatically leads to non-recognition of the political legitimacy of countries where these languages are state ones. The author believes that the analyzed levels of political culture of Internet users, on the one hand, contradict the main provisions of academic science. On the other hand, it is assumed that the activity of supporters of the analyzed versions of the Ukrainian and Macedonian languages perception is predominantly virtual, assisting to the formation of the image of the enemy in political cultures. The author believes that the analyzed moods are extremely stable and adaptive, forming symbolically significant dimensions of the Russian and Bulgarian nationalist imaginations in promotion both the concepts of identity and the formation of the images of the Other.

Abstract:
N. I. Tolstoy dedicated a lot of attention to the Slavic dialogue ritual in his ethnolinguistic works. This ritual can be found in the Eastern parts of South Slavia, among Serbs, Bulgarians, and Macedonians. The Balkan specifics of the Christmas dialogue ritual in Pčinja (Serbia) is established on the basis of the verbal and actional codes of the ritual. The dialectal narrative in Pčinja, registered in 1998, is a dialogue ritual meant to shield the crops from hail in the coming year. It includes the motif of coaxing feeding a hail cloud, as an areal-semantic reconstruction of the ritual shows. The investigation also defines the semantic and geographical connections of the text to corresponding Macedonian and Bulgarian speech formulas. The areal of the fragment of the traditional folk culture under scrutiny includes the southern part of the Serbian-Bulgarian border area, north eastern and central parts of Macedonia. This can be also proven when the well-known and newly published ethnographical and dialectal data are taken into consideration. In eastern and western Serbia speech clichés are detected, similar to those included into the dialogue-ritual under scrutiny that originates from the border Serbian-Macedonian area of Pčinja. Their similarities and differences with the text of the ritual are demonstrated.

Abstract:
The Influence of Ancient Greek Culture on Macedonian Literature of the 19th CenturyIn Macedonia under the Ottoman rule during the nineteenth century, the Macedonian people-the nation is subject to political pressure and the cultural influence of Turkey and other countries. Under the influence of propaganda leading by Athens and education politics in the area of contemporary Republic of Macedonia, some Macedonian militant intellectuals embraced, at the same time, were influenced by romanticism and the Old-Greek culture, which strongly affect their literary works. In this context, two authors are viewed as the most significant-Jordan Hadji Murad Konstantinov Džinot and Grigor Prlichev. Džinot is the author of dramatized dialogue inspired by the classic Greek mythology, at the school, where he is a teacher. On the pages of the press he announces the publication of its ancient-themed dramas, however, for unknown reasons, none of them does not appear in print. Prlichev well knew the Old-Greek and is an admirer of the works of Homer. Influenced by the poetry of Homer writes in an epic poem in the archaized Greek.

Abstract:
In 2018, within the framework of a detailed study of the colour term system in the Balkan Slavic languages, the author’s ethnolinguistic questionnaire was prepared and aimed at identifying the specifics of the colour term system and colour functioning in the traditional folk culture. In 2018, May-June, an expedition was held to the Kumanovo municipality, the north part of North Macedonia, with a view to test the questionnaire and to study the archaic phenomena of the folk culture. This area is a borderland of the three Balkan Slavic ethnic groups and a zone that preserves unique archaic features in the folk culture. Nevertheless, the Macedonian part of the borderland has not been researched enough. The problem on the colour term system in the dialect under consideration has not yet been formulated. Dialect dictionaries reflecting the peculiarities of the Kumanovo dialect have not been published yet. The collected material reveals the specifics of the colour term system and colour functioning in the Macedonian spoken dialects under consideration. The use of colour in the traditional folk culture of the population living in the border zone of the three Slavic peoples has not been studied so far. The article provides an analysis of the results of the expedition to the Kumanovo region.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to monitor the effect of two starter cultures on some chemical and sensory properties of industrially produced Macedonian traditional sausage. The research covered three variants: Variant 1: Control variant (conventionally produced Macedonian traditional sausages using nitrite salt and powdered acerola); Variant 2: Macedonian traditional sausages where the basic formulation was enriched by addition of starter culture CS-300 (Staphylococcus carnosus ssp. utilis + Staphylococcus carnosus) in combination with Swiss chard powder and powdered acerola; Variant 3: Macedonian traditional sausages where the basic formulation was enriched by addition of starter cultures CS-300 (Staphylococcus carnosus ssp. utilis + Staphylococcus carnosus) and BLC-78 (Pediococcus acidilactici + Staphylococcus carnosus) in combination with Swiss chard powder and powdered acerola. Starter cultures have a positive effect on changing the pH value of sausages, which creates favorable conditions for the development of the desired microflora. In the sausages from variant 2 the value for water activity is constant, and the largest decrease was determined in the variant 3. Nitrate-reducing bacteria in combination with a natural source of nitrates (Swiss chard powder and leek) are a suitable substitute for nitrite salt, thus eliminating its negative effects on consumer health. According to the obtained results, with the use of the starter culture CS-300 good quality of the sausages is achieved. At the same time a safe product is obtained where the use of nitrite salt is completely eliminated.

Abstract:
This article is about the reception of Kapuściński’s book Another Day of Life which was translated and published in Macedonia in 2017. This text explains the reasons of the delayed translation of Kapuściński’s book and the social environmentsurrounding its reception, as well as the reception of the reportage as a literary genre in Macedonia. Those are part of the reasons why this literary master has passed by almost unnoticed in this culture and his works are pushed aside from the main literary streams. The article also deals with translating problems concerning the alienation / otherness and the way foreign realities are transferred from Polish to Macedonian language.

Abstract:
Defining the Balkans as a geographic, cultural and semantic entity triggers an interpretation of them as some idea, concept, oftentimes even a stereotype. The Balkans are usually interpreted as a singular entity, generalized and set in a single framework. That generalized view is often ambivalent. The Balkans are often interpreted and presented as a ‘powder keg’, a ‘bridge between the East and the West’, a part of Europe that is simply different, a place of strong emotions and attractive forms of music and dance, etc. However, the Balkans represent a set of cultural units that are in constant interaction, with each of the cultures of the Balkans being specific and authentic. Macedonia, as one of the pages of the ‘Balkan story’, will be presented at three levels—regarding its drama, music and dance. The specific characteristics of the music and the dance fields will be presented through their most significant features and examples, and the treatment of the topic of the Balkans in Macedonian drama will be covered as well. The analysis confirms that generalization is impossible even within a single culture, as each artist and medium of performance has its own unique expression. The cultural forms of Macedonian culture are only part of the wider pluralistic representation of the Balkans. It may be offered under the Balkans as the common denominator, but the truth is that this/representation/concept is polyvalent, multicultural, polysemic and extremely rich.
