Introduction: Mammary neoplasms are the most common type of tumor in dogs. Some proteins play an important role in tumor progression, thus are candidate prognosis markers. During tumor growth, the transcription factor induced by hypoxia (HIF-1α) activates the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), promoting angiogenesis. Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is a pro-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic cytokine and has been associated with tumor progression. Objectives: To evaluate the prognostic value of HIF-1α, VEGF and IL-8 proteins in tumor tissue in dogs with mammary tumors, correlating them with clinicopathological parameters, clinical outcome and survival. Material and Methods: The concentrations of HIF-1α, VEGF and IL-8 proteins were evaluated by ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent) in macerated tumor of 25 bitches with mammary tumors and control samples and compared statistically. Results: The levels of HIF-1α, VEGF and IL-8 were higher in dogs over the age of 10 years and that had died (p <0.05). Moreover, HIF-1α concentrations were elevated in the tumors of dogs who developed metastases (p = 0.04), while VEGF levels were highest in tumors with clinical stages III and IV (p = 0.03) and IL-8 tumors in tumor with development greater than six months (p = 0.03). Still, high levels of HIF-1α, VEGF and IL-8 were also related to shorter overall survival (p <0.05). Conclusions: High levels of HIF-1α, VEGF and IL-8 are associated with features of poor prognosis, suggesting that the assessment of these proteins in tumor macerated has important prognostic value.

Full textThe quality determination of drugs implicates in the evaluation of the raw material, process and final product. Some special care must be taken in the preparation of phytotherapeutic drugs in order to assure the quality of the plant material, due to its complexity and variety. A hydroalcoholic macerate from flowery aerial parts of Baccharis trimera (Less.) DC., Compositae ('carqueja') was developed regarding the aspects of its total quality and galenical development. The plant raw material was standardized through botanical and physico-chemical methods. The chemical composition of the raw material, intermediate products and extract was evaluated through chromatographic (PC, TLC, VLC and HPLC) and physic techniques. For the quantitation of the tracer substances, eupatorin and 3-0-methylquercetin, were used two methods: thin-layer chromatography associated with UV spectrophotometry (TLC/UV) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The HPLC was used for the validation of the TLC/UV-method. The presence of 3-0-methylquercetin, a new substance for the genus Baccharis, was determine by chromatographic and UV-spectroscopic methods. The influence of some technological factors such as maceration time, ethanol concentration in the extraction liquid and granulometry of the plant material was analysed using 2n factorial design. The factorial analysis demonstrated to be suitable to evaluate this influence considering the yeld of flavonoids. While the yeld of eupatorin deppends only on the granulometric range of the plant material, increase of ethanolic concentration and granulometry reduces the concentration of 3-0-methylquercetin. Prolongation of maceration time results on a higher amount of this flavonoid.

Silva, Moreno Enrique Esteban.
The formation of turbidity and/or deposits in bottled white wines is one of the main problems facing the wine industry. It is believed that the main factor responsible for this, is the presence of thermally unstable proteins, also called pathogenic proteins. To study this problem, were evaluated the effects on protein abundance of grape-pathogenic, different maceration and pressing treatments at different times and stages respectively. Additionally, were evaluated the amount of bentonite required to stabilize a wine from macerated and pressed grape and grape just pressed. The number of pathogenic proteins obtained after maceration treatments were higher than those found in standard samples, where it was observed that the longer the maceration was a higher number of pathogenic proteins. This trend correlates with increased protein instability musts. The case of pressed treatments (three and six stages), there was a correlation between protein abundance and protein instability pathogenic musts. Finally, the number of pathogenic proteins found in a wine made from grapes macerated and pressed, was higher than those found in wine grapes pressed only. Thus it took a further addition of bentonite in wine with both treatments (20% higher than the wine pressed from grapes only).

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The larger palatine foramen (FPM), is the emerging point of the vasculo neural bundle that it is distributed to the hard palate, close to the area that donates gingival grafts, is the area for performing anesthetic techniques for desensitization of the hard palate, and still, is the point of entrance of the palatine channel for reaching the pterigopalatine ganglion, becomes fundamental in oral surgical interventions. Therefore, the importance and need of knowing the topography of this foramen becomes clear. 141 softened human craniums were studied, from which 82 were masculine craniums and 59 were feminine craniums, provided in by the Federal Universities of Uberlândia and of São Paulo. Measures were obtained with a "Mitutoyo" precision pachymetry, and a compass, among the reference points previously standardized. The collected data were submitted to the statistical analysis. The results of this research demonstrated that there was a significant difference between the measures of right and left FPMs in relation to the interpalatine suture. In most of the craniums, the FPM was located closer to the third molar. The male craniums presented dimensions significantly larger than the female craniums and, except for the distance between left FPM and the incisive foramen, all the other distances from the FPM to the points taken as reference can be considered to be considered in order to estimate the sex. Some new investigations are suggested, mainly studies that consider the incisive foramen and the maxillary tuber as reference points to define the topography of the larger palatine foramen.

Full textThe standardization of phytotherapeutic drugs guarantees their efficacy and safety. Such standardization begins in the steps of drying, stabilizing, grinding and storing. Techniques of recognizing and maintaining the active substances, both in plant and in derived forms must be established. The leaves of Maytenus ilicifolia Martius ex. Reiss. (Celastraceae), popularly known as "espinheira santa", "cancerosa" or "cancorosa", have been used as analgesics, oral contraceptives, in wound healing and in alleviating gastric distress. The plant is among the 20 medicinal plants proposed for study by "CEME", the Brazilian national drug supply administration. To date, its beneficial actions in wound healing and in the treatment of dyspepsia have been clinical proven, as well as its low toxicity and absence of mutagenicity. In this study, quality control parameters for the plant form were established, initially using Maytenus ilicifolia's anatomic characteritics as for example, its three-layered palisadic parenchyma. Preliminary chemical analyses of the plant revealed carotenoids, flavonoids, tanninoids and nitrogenous compounds. The latter two substances were used as references in the development of quantification techniques. Quantification by tanninoids, used in this work, is well recognized in the pharmacopoeial literature. For methyl-xanthines, extraction techniques described by Stahl employing Extrelut column extraction followed , by UV spectrophotometric quantification were utilized. To better evaluate the effects of various techniques on 4 the maceration of the plant, 4x2 and 3x2 factorial analyses were employed, permitting evaluation of the extractive yield of both specific substances and specific groups of substances. The analysis revealed alcohol to be of paramount importance, with the best extraction occurring with a maceration containing 50% alcohol with five days of contact. A standardized macerate was submitted to preliminary stability studies through heat degradation experiments at 30, 40 and 60 degrees centigrade, degradation be followed by chromatography and by dosing of tanninoid substances. Degradation of these substances apparently followed first order kinetics.
