Abstract:
My collection of isiZulu poems is based on my rural and traditional upbringing. It draws on language and customs which have shaped and defined me as a woman born in the South of KwaZulu-Natal. I write about how I have to conform to both a rural life and an urban one that forms my second world. I find myself having to switch between these lives, which benefits me a lot, and I feel a responsibility to bring hope to young people especially from the rural side, that nothing is wrong with being who and where they are. My writing is influenced by authors such as Nazim Hikmet, Mafika Gwala, and Mazisi Kunene who encourages black writers to write about their own customs and stories rather than embracing ‘western civilization’ and foreign languages. I also like the contemporary subjects and the humour in Dr Nakanjani Sibiya’s work.

This doctoral dissertation, inspired by the assumptions of converge culture which blurs the frontiers between new and old media, art and entertainment, entertainment and education, high and low culture, aims at investigating the emergence of online textual interventions related to the Machadian classic. The dislocation of Machado’s literature to the platforms of Web 2.0 signals for the current reader’s challenge to have access to this output under various mediatic circunstances which keep certain distance from previous models of adaptation. Therefore, the focus of our analysis lies upon less traditional rereadings of the literary text (twitterfiction, fanfiction, web series, tv series, facebook simulation, animated cartoons). Our hypothesis is based on the power of the media and the digital culture genres to configure new interfaces for the literary adaptation as well as the literature teaching practices in the present time. Thus, this work unites critical/theoretical perspectives for the studies of adaptation in the context of media convergence related to the possibilities that the digital space, its technologies and the participative culture from which it emerges, offer for the multiple literacy procedures – literary and digital – in cyberspace.

Doran, Helen. "Diagenesis of a fractured chalk reservoir : Machar oilfield, Central North Sea." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/13691.

Full text
Abstract:
The Machar Cretaceous chalk oilfield, Central North Sea, is a structural trap of chalk folded above a diaper of Zechstein salt, and formed a regional leakoff point for overpressure from Jurassic sandstones deeper in the basin. Chalk was deposited as pelagic sediment, but re-deposition by gravity flows improves reservoir quality. Diagenesis of the Machar chalk matrix occurs during burial to 1Km. Stylolites form in the chalk at depths below 600m and cause cementation of the reservoir through pressure dissolution and precipitation in a closed system. During diagenesis of the chalk matrix the underlying salt diaper evolves and as a result four fracture sets begin to form in the chalk reservoir. Hydrocarbon charge at mid-Miocene halted matrix cementation resulting in an exceptionally porous (30%mD) reservoir. The growth and evolution of the diaper is marked by the formation of healed fractures within the chalk reservoir. Fracture filling calcite records the evolution of the Tor Formation reservoir from a closed system, rock-dominated environment to an open diagenetic system. Four different fracture types have been discovered within the Tor formation on the Machar field. Of these, the first to form was Fracture Type 1, relating to bedding stylolites formed through minor extension at the crest of the reservoir as the salt attempts to remain buoyant. This fracture is filled with Calcite 1. δ13C values within this calcite (+ 2.0 to + 2.3‰ PDB) are similar to the values measured in the matrix chalk (+ 1.5 to + 3‰ PDB), suggesting that like the matrix cement this formed in a rock-dominated system. 87Sr/86Sr (0.7078 to 70787) values within Calcite 1,also similar to the matrix values (0.70770-0.70791) supports this theory. Negative δ18O (-5 to -7‰ PDB) values measured in Calcite 1 are explained by increased burial temperature during precipitation. Fracture type 2, the second fracture to form, is filled with Calcite 2; δ13C values (+ 3.6 to + 5.9‰ PDB), are more positive than the matrix values (+ 1.5 to + 3.0‰ PDB), and mark the opening of the reservoir to an external fluid. Fracture type 3 is filled with Calcite 3, and forms as Palaeogene sediments begin to down build around the evolving salt diaper. Calcite 3 precipitated from an external fluid that is restricted in its migration between tectonic stylolites. Calcite 3 is replaced by saddle dolomite, celestite, barite and fluorite.

Abstract:

From a dissonant voice, I proposed a study of the poetic construction of Gilka Machado, the serpent-poem woman, in view of the social, political and cultural context of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is a fragmented, blurred, mobile reading agency that searches through the reading of poems, interviews, testimonies, critical texts and theory, to weave a social affective itinerary from the archives of a memory of the first naked woman of Brazilian literature. In order to do so, I decided to divide this discussion into three intersecting parts: in the first, I related the process of erasure and silencing around its poetic production, with the question of ethnic-racial identification, based on the intertwining of the gender issue , Race and class, given the two hierarchies of Gilka: woman and black; then in the second, I sought, through subjectivity, to draw a panorama of the lyric, as well as the great forces that prevailed at the time, contributing the difficulty of classification and fixation of literary currents, since I am bordering on an unauthorized and dissident voice; and finally, through the word body or written body, I constructed a reading on this space of enunciative possibilities, through a discussion about the body and eroticism, as a recurrence in the “gilkian” poetic making, a power, a way of positioning itself discursively In the world, especially in the face of criticism of his works. In addition, in this last chapter, I also make an analysis of the main periodicals and the number of occurrences with the name of Gilka Machado, from a temporal cut, from 1910 to 1939, when she published her first books: Crystaes Partidos (1915), Estados da Alma (1917), Mulher Nua (1922), Meu Glorioso Pecado (1928) and Sublimação (1938). Thus, I approached through the fragments the Gilka Machado's great desire to write, at a time when it was common to hear that it did not fit her, her lacked the craft, the touch, the ability, the study, in counterpoint, The presence of authorized voices (men, whites, middle class, residents of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, with works published by major publishers, among other characteristics). With this, the noises and discomfort appear, the seal to their works, since they appear, by a kind of tension, evidenced, above all, due to the need to recompose and rework other discourses already rooted in the literary tradition, the body, eroticism, a posture of assuming the construction of its own image and identity as a woman and black. In this way, I realized that the “gilkian” poetic construction is the result of its insurgency to the docility and imprisonment of the woman's body, as well as a strategy to put on hold the denunciation of how women's desire needed and need to be controlled, before a society Racist, sexist and classist. Thus, Gilka Machado is this “foreign body” that prefers the ostensible valorization of the female body, not only as an object, but also as an “object” of theorizing the feminine intellect, according to other possibilities of existence.

Abstract:
We shall investigate the use of Swahili slang in Freddy Macha`s tiny collection of short stories Twen `zetu Ulaya (DSM 1984), and especially in his short story Check-bob This is arguably the only epistolary short story in modern Swahili literature; in fact, epistolary novels are uncommon in anglophone Afiica as a whole. In this narrative two former lovers show abuses on each other and their four letters - two by each character - unfold the story of a selfish young woman who shamelessly exploited her boyfiiend and the manner in which he paid her back with her own coin. It is interesting to note how the same events are presented from two different perspectives and hence evaluated differently.

Redpath, Nicola. "Restoration and management of wildflower-rich machair for the conservation of bumblebees." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/3287.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last half century, the widespread decline of bumblebees across the agricultural landscapes of Western Europe and North America has been well documented. This decline has undoubtedly been driven to a large extent by the intensification of agriculture, which has fragmented landscapes and removed large areas of suitable foraging habitat, nesting and hibernation sites. Consequently, some of the rarest Bombus species now persist only in isolated pockets of semi-natural habitat, which have been subjected to little agricultural intensification. Of the 25 Bombus species native to the UK, three species have gone extinct in recent decades and several others are severely threatened. Remaining populations of the UK’s rarest bumblebee, Bombus distinguendus, have become strongly associated with florally-rich machair grassland habitats found only in the North and West of Scotland and Western Ireland. Machair, a unique habitat that forms on soils rich in shell sand, has been maintained by rotational agricultural practices implemented by crofters. However, recent changes in crofting practices, which include the intensive grazing of machair in some areas, or conversely the abandonment of machair management all together in others, have resulted in sections of machair that have become degraded and consequently exhibit low floral abundance and species diversity. This has significant implications for species such as B. distinguendus, which have for the most part come to rely of the florally-rich swards of machair grassland. This thesis aimed to develop a greater understanding of how machair grassland habitats are utilised by foraging bumblebees, including B. distinguendus, and in turn examined the potential for restoring degraded areas of machair via a variety of methods. The research presented here examines the influence of current crofting practices on the abundance of bumblebees and their forage plant species and combines this information with a detailed exploration of the machair seed bank and potential machair restoration treatments. The specific foraging requirements of B. distinguendus were found to be similar to those of other long-tongued bumblebee species and the provision of plants from the Fabaceae family was found to be of particular importance. Current crofting practices implemented in the North and West of Scotland were, on the whole, found support low numbers of foraging bumblebees. Similarly, existing habitat management schemes, designed to provide early cover for corncrakes and foraging resources for bumblebees, were found to be largely ineffective in attracting B. distinguendus, when compared with florally-rich machair habitat. In addition, this research suggests that the existing machair seed bank is unlikely to provide a sufficient resource for reinstating florally-rich habitat to degraded areas of machair. However, this thesis has demonstrated that it is possible to implement seed mixes on machair which can reinstate species typical of machair plant communities and which also attract high numbers of foraging bumblebees. The findings of these habitat assessments and restoration trials are examined in full in the following chapters and implications for the future management of wildflower-rich machair are discussed throughout.

Owen, Nia Wyn. "Plant ecology and community dynamics of machair systems in the Outer Hebrides." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/780.

Full text
Abstract:
The machair systems of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland are renowned for the diversity and conservation value of their plant communities. However, machair systems have a restricted distribution and are prone to disturbance from both anthropogenic and environmental sources. The effects of two major anthropogenic and environmental disturbances (agriculture and burial by wind-blown sand) on the Kildonan and Drimsdale machair systems on South Uist, and the dynamic responses of machair vegetation to these human and natural agencies were described and quantified. The investigated machair systems comprised a diversity of sand dune, grassland and marginal vegetation types which were spatially distributed along a primary environmental gradient of soil organic matter, soil moisture and soil pH. Vegetation types influenced by the effects of cultivation, notably potato-bed successions, abandoned field systems and fallow areas were also a conspicuous component of the Kildonan and Drimsdale machairs. Re-vegetation following cultivation occurred primarily through vegetative processes. Sexual reproduction via seed within different machair vegetation types was limited. The numbers of viable seeds recorded from machair seed banks ranged from 7 mˉ² soil in foredune vegetation to 58 mˉ² soil in newly-ploughed cereal land. Densities of viable seeds recorded from the machair seed rain ranged from 2 mˉ² soil in the dune slack to 24 mˉ² soil in a potato patch, fallow for two years. These values represent the first estimates of the size of machair seed budgets. Glasshouse-based burial experiments examined the effects of inundation by sand on four machair vegetation types. Foredune grassland, dune slack, three-year fallow grassland and unploughed grassland vegetation exhibited the capacity to survive and re-emerge from both intermittent and single depositions of sand. In terms of effects on plant frequency, intermittent burial by five depositions of 1cm of sand was more damaging than a single deposition of 5cm. However, all vegetation types responded to both intermittent and single burial events primarily through a change in the number of individual plants, rather than through a change in the number of plant species. Five different responses to burial by sand were identified for machair species. The suspension of photosynthetic activity and the maintenance of a low dark respiration rate were identified as important physiological responses to burial. Photosynthetic activity of machair vegetation was resumed on denudation, indicating the existence of an elastic physiological response to burial. Ecological processes in the dune slack habitat and the responses of slack vegetation to its dynamic environment were subtly different to those characterizing the other investigated sub-communities. These differences were attributed to the fact that machair slacks are characterized by an historical ecology distinct from that of other areas of the machair system. It is suggested that the formulation of effective management plans and conservation strategies for the machair systems of the Outer Hebrides ultimately lies in an understanding of their historical ecology, and in their past management and environmental histories.

With the monograph What is English? – subtitled And Why Should We Care? – Tim William Machan has presented a difficult book. The dust jacket already prepares the prospective reader by stating that “Finding an account that fits the constantly changing varieties of English is, Tim Machan finds, anything but simple”. And this text continues: “But he [i.e. Machan] rises to the challenge, grappling with its elusive essence through episodes in its history.” It is the combination of a tremendous amount of information and the ‘episodic’ form of this monograph that makes this book quite challenging.

Lewis, Robert. "Investigating the drivers of spatial and temporal biodiversity patterns of the Machair." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2012. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/8455/.

Full text
Abstract:
In plant ecology, understanding which species live where and why is fundamental for ensuring successful conservation management with the aim of maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services. Biodiversity patterns in space can be empirically linked to spatially scaled environmental processes, providing a greater understanding to how plant species assemblages change along differing environmental gradients. In the same way, biodiversity patterns in time can be linked to temporal trends in the environment, empirically linking changes in vegetation to changes in the external environment. This furthers understanding of how plant communities are likely to respond to future scenarios of environmental change, providing an insight into future shifts in biodiversity patterns and, in turn, how his may influence valuable ecosystem functions and services upon which humans ultimately depend. Trends in human land use have been shown to be the single most influential driver of current global biodiversity change to date. This, coupled with a changing climate, suggests vegetation communities on a global scale are under increasing pressure to adapt to multiple dynamically changing environmental constraints. This thesis focuses on a globally-rare semi-natural, coastal grassland habitat termed ‘Machair’, renowned for its high biodiversity and cultural heritage importance. Confined solely to the north-western fringe of Europe, the Machairs have formed through unique combinations of geo-physiological and climatic conditions, and even more importantly, century-long associations with human land use through which the low-intensity intermediate disturbance is considered to be vital in maintaining its biodiversity value. However, change in the management of the Machairs alongside other environmental drivers of change, particularly climate, provides major concerns for the biodiversity value of this habitat. In this thesis, spatial and temporal biodiversity patterns of Machair vegetation are investigated to assess the major drivers of change and identify regions which may require future conservation efforts to restore and/or maintain the future biodiversity value of this globally-rare habitat. To achieve this, a spatio-temporal dataset of Scottish Machair vegetation first collected in 1976-77 and then re-surveyed in 2009-10 was used. Analyses found both climate and land use management to influence spatial and temporal vegetation patterns of Scotland’s Machair and Machair grassland. Climate was shown to operate at relatively broad scales (>50km), while the influence of different measurable components of climate was also found to significantly affect temporal turnover patterns of Machair grassland assemblages. Land use management, predominantly at a relatively fine scale (<1.5km), is shown to be the single most influential driver of spatial turnover patterns among both the national extent of Scotland’s soft coast habitats (i.e. low lying coastal areas composed of sand, shingle or mud) and Machair. This indicates the relative importance of land use management in maintaining the high habitat heterogeneity and a high proportion of edge habitat believed to be vital for maintaining the high biodiversity value typical of these habitats. Considerable change in Machair biodiversity for many of Scotland’s regions was observed, much of which could be reasonably well linked to reported shifts in land use, particularly shifts towards increased use of inorganic fertilisers and either increased or decreased agricultural intensification. Not all change was deleterious, many regions which were once included in government incentivised schemes specific to the protection and biodiversity maintenance of Machair grassland displayed higher biodiversity, including species of conservation importance. This highlights the importance of financial incentives to encourage environmentally sensitive land use management more inline with traditional practices, which are increasingly becoming socially and economically unviable. The analyses used were deliberately targeted to identify the community assembly processes by which the Machair communities are governed at local, regional and national scales. It is evident that these communities are governed by environmental filtering at relatively broad regional scales principally through climatic constraints, and similarly at relatively fine local scales through constraints imposed by land use management. It is also evident that community assembly processes are not mutually exclusive and operate simultaneously, at hierarchical scales. Biotic processes at extremely fine scales certainly operate to govern the vegetation communities of Machair grasslands, evident through functional trait divergence. Furthermore, shifts in land use management are shown to impact on these assembly processes, displaying for several regions, an increase in constraints through environmental filtering and reduced resilience through reduced niche differentiation. This study makes a valuable contribution to knowledge of how land use and climate impact on spatial and temporal biodiversity patterns among Machair vegetation, identifying the relative importance of climate and land use determinants, the scale at which they operate, and, how current trends are influencing the biodiversity value of the Machairs at national and regional scales. Furthermore this research demonstrates the utility of different methodological advances and techniques in investigating patterns of biodiversity change for a better understanding of the patterns and processes that govern plant communities.

Abstract:
His is the work of an exalted poet, though sober and contained, apparently discreet and inwardly irrepressible: it sets itself as harmoniously classic in facture. On stage and with effective plots, Machado de Assis provided the theatrical language, which he utterly mastered, with a new function, made of the restlessness and excitability that disturbed and renewed Brazilian theatre in the 1860s and 70s from an aesthetical point of view. His approach as a playwright would cause misunderstanding and unsettle contemporary critics of his time, to date. Interprets have to take his theatre onto the stage, to root it physically and concretely, avoiding too much affectation or lyricism. On that condition only will underlying conflicts become apparent. In Machado, there is a definite, aware restlessness in willing to make a viable sum so as to durably lay the foundations of Brazilian dramaturgy of his time. In parallel, the writer started a career as a theatre critic, hoisting the practice to a high office, as indeed the genre had, before him, been widely despised as lacking legitimacy. Here, the journalist and chronicle writer presents a more heterogeneous body of works showing a complexity still overlooked to date: it became a space of paradoxical tensions to understand and think theatre in a different way. Hence, Machado – a young man of not thirty years of age – would provide the discipline with an autonomy still standing today and comfort his own significance in the theatrical and intellectual milieu of his time. Such critical reflexivity, such passion for drama in general and, finally such mastery of dramatic art, would illuminate the writing of his most accomplished short stories and novels. His immense legacy as a critic undeniably owes everything to his talent as an original and wild, untamed novelist – the greatest Brazilian prose writer of all times. The playwright is overshadowed by the novelist. Nevertheless, through his theatre, Machado de Assis presents a live and labyrinthine matter, intimately linked with the social and historical fabric of his time: an artistically though unaccomplished, and far from consensual, material

Perseguindo essas referências fundamentais do fazer literário, passa-se, por fim, à discussão crítica da prática escritural à qual se lançaram alguns autores contemporâneos: recriar contos escolhidos do autor fluminense.<br>Drawing from the short story The Priest or the Metaphysics of Style, by Machado de Assis, this dissertation proposes to follow a theoretical trajectory of concepts and styles of writing, investigating to what extent one, using this as another base of epistemology that s unorthodox, is absorbed by another. Such that we observe how the concepts in question operate in the work of Roland Barthes as counterpoint to some conceptual formulations of contemporaries in this school of thought. Meanwhile, Barthesian thought has as its principal tenet to reinvigorate the Machado de Assis preoccupation with the act of writing; the preoccupation is present, folded into the writing, in his stories – there is a fictional space where he can explore the eternal debate between a novelist and philosopher. Following these fundamental references to the literary craft, in the end, a critical discussion occurs on the practice of writing, from which some contemporary writers were spawned: thus they began recreating tales of the Carioca author.

This dissertation has attempted to unveil the unfinished and the theme of man in preparations in the work of the writer Aníbal Machado [1894-1964], referring, whenever possible, to his manuscripts. Those structures suggest several discursive approaches, some of them concerning the plot nature, others regarding to a critical way about the sources in which Machado de Assis inspired himself or devoured anthropophagically in order to establish a revolutionary narrative discourse which does not end in those four instances. However, they are like pillars which bear and provide a framework for the greatest acrobat capers .

Abstract:
This thesis is the micro-history of Roger Machado, who is best known as Leicester Herald for Edward IV, Edward V, and Richard III, and the senior herald, Richmond King of Arms, for Henry VII. Prior to this thesis, Machado has only been sparsely considered by scholars because he is elusive in the historical record. There is, in the College of Arms, his extant memorandum book, but otherwise, sources referring to him are few and far between. However, in the 1970s, Machado’s Southampton residence was excavated, which unearthed a rich artefact assemblage associated with his occupancy. This discovery has allowed for a fresh perspective on Machado’s life. This thesis, therefore, uses both documentary and archaeological sources to unlock the man from the records, and consequently, places a strong emphasis on the importance of interdisciplinary research. By pursuing a micro-historical approach that focusses on Machado’s engagement with objects, this thesis uses Machado as a window into the world in which he lived. Machado lived through the later years of the Wars of the Roses and through the entire reign of the Tudor dynasty’s first monarch, Henry VII. Therefore, his life is well placed to enable this thesis to consider broader themes. The first chapter discusses the micro-historical approach. The second chapter discusses how Machado, as a foreigner, came to work and live in England, how he came to join the exiled Henry Tudor, and examines the herald and Office of Arms in the fifteenth century. The third chapter considers the ceremonial role that Machado and the heralds played at the Yorkist and early Tudor courts. The fourth chapter considers Machado’s life and home in early Tudor Southampton, using the objects excavated from his house and others recorded in his extant inventory. The fifth chapter discusses how Machado would have used such objects in dining.

Abstract:
The poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut is unique in the fourteenth century for his massive complete-works volumes. However, a potentially anachronistic view of the poet-composer’s relation to auctoritas has developed in modern deliberations on Machaut. In this thesis I challenge these current notions. Beginning with a review of select secondary literature in Chapter II, I focus on the ways scholarly consensus has foregrounded an ultimately authoritative author persona at the exclusion of other agents involved in the compilation of Machaut’s works. In Chapter III I approach the question of authority from the perspective of Machaut’s own writing through a close reading of select narrative passages and embedded letters in the Livre dou Voir Dit. The analyses of four examples of later-added contratenors to select works by Machaut in the posthumous MS E (1390) are the focus of Chapter IV.

Abstract:
There is a pervasive tendency, in Machaut scholarship, to read his poetry as having value only insofar as it speaks to our postmodern age: either it is fragmented and riven with ambiguities, or it celebrates eroticism and the things of this world for their own sake; in any case, it resists religious and moral orthodoxy. Such readings, while often valuable in themselves, fail to take sufficient account of the influence which Boethian and Neoplatonic ideas had upon Machaut, and thus misunderstand his work on a fundamental level. By paying attention to the Boethian content in the narrative dits, and by analysing Machaut's verse more thoroughly than has been done before, my thesis demonstrates not only this author's moral orthodoxy, but also his extremely sophisticated didactic methods. I begin with the Confort d'ami, Machaut's most overtly moral work. The Confort engages with the supposed 'worldly' perspective of its imprisoned addressee, adapting biblical and classical exempla in order to coax Charles of Navarre towards a deeper understanding of worldly fortune. In Chapter 2 I show how, in the Prologue and the Dit du vergier, the ambiguity so beloved of critics can serve as a moral commentary on the carnality and self-absorption of the erotic and artistic points of view. Having established, in the preceding chapters, that this author's approach to his subject is ambiguous and critical, in Chapter 3 I explore the extremes of his pessimism, and show how his love poetry can incorporate sophisticated philosophical ideas, through my analysis of the Jugement du roy de Behaigne. The thesis culminates in a detailed reading of the Remede de Fortune. Through his deliberately idealised statements about education, through his application of these views to the art of courtly love, through his composition (and setting to music) of a sequence of virtuoso lyrics, and through his explicit invocations of and borrowings from Boethius, Machaut develops an empathic but ultimately, as I argue, deeply sceptical vision of earthly love.

Ingrassia, Nathalie Sylvie. "Norman MacCaig and the fascination of existence." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9490.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a comprehensive study of the poetry of Norman MacCaig. His poems have received relatively little critical attention and scholars appear to have concentrated on a few specific points such as MacCaig’s characteristic restraint or his inscription in a given literary tradition. Critics have notably pointed out different dichotomies in his works. I argue that these dichotomies are fundamentally interrelated. It is characteristic of MacCaig’s writing to simultaneously engage with and challenge philosophical and linguistic concepts and positions as well as literary traditions and stylistic choices. These dichotomies are both a cause and a symptom of this phenomenon. They take on a structuring role in a body of works often regarded as a collection of independent lyrics rather than a cohesive totality. The first half of the thesis will follow a thematic approach: considering first the poetic project MacCaig outlines and the interplay of celebration, faithfulness to the object and the problem of perception; then the treatment of religion and the divine by this notoriously atheist author and how it relates to his worldview. This will provide a basis to address MacCaig’s lifelong concern with the relationship between perception, language and description and what this entails for both his writing and his philosophical positions. In the second half of this study, I will address MacCaig’s engagement with tradition – and its limits – through consideration of three different modes and how they relate to his writing project: elegy, pastoral and amatory verse, regarding the latter two as specific examples of the former. Through these interconnected studies of MacCaig’s poetry, I argue that the critical tendency to either undervalue his central place or treat his works in a fragmentary fashion originates in MacCaig’s sense of the instability of our perceptions and our possible discourses about the world. This uncertainty at the root of his writing reflects his constant and often uncomfortable awareness of the elusive nature of existence and meaning – death and the limits of language threatening both his perception of the world he evinces such fondness for and his ability to write about it.

George, Jessica. "Deadly light : Machen, Lovecraft, and evolutionary theory." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/58289/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between evolutionary theory and the weird tale in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through readings of works by two of the writers most closely associated with the form, Arthur Machen (1863-1947) and H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), it argues that the weird tale engages consciously, even obsessively, with evolutionary theory and with its implications for the nature and status of the "human". The introduction first explores the designation "weird tale", arguing that it is perhaps less useful as a genre classification than as a moment in the reception of an idea, one in which the possible necessity of recalibrating our concept of the real is raised. In the aftermath of evolutionary theory, such a moment gave rise to anxieties around the nature and future of the "human" that took their life from its distant past. It goes on to discuss some of the studies which have considered these anxieties in relation to the Victorian novel and the late-nineteenth-century Gothic, and to argue that a similar full-length study of the weird work of Machen and Lovecraft is overdue. The first chapter considers the figure of the pre-human survival in Machen's tale of lost races and pre-Christian religions, arguing that the figure of the fairy as pre-Celtic survival served as a focal point both for the anxieties surrounding humanity's animal origins and for an unacknowledged attraction to the primitive Other. The second chapter discusses the pervasiveness of degeneration theory at the fin de siècle, and the ways in which works by both Machen and Lovecraft make use of it to depict the backsliding of both the individual human subject and of wider society, raising the suggestion that the degenerate is always already present within the contemporary human. In the third chapter, portrayals by both authors of hybridity come under consideration. The chapter places these tales in their historical context, with reference to the cultural anxieties surrounding the decline of empire, the rise of anti-immigration sentiment in the United States, and the emergence of the eugenics movement, and argues that these fears become tied to notions about the fitness or otherwise to survive of a "human" associated with Anglo-Saxon whiteness. The fourth and final chapter discusses Lovecraft's portrayals of highly-advanced extraterrestrial civilisations, arguing that these stories partake of a Utopian impulse that nonetheless expresses itself via contemporary racist discourses, and that they both maintain the notion of a horrific primitive Other within the human and attempt to open up the possibility of a transhuman or posthuman future. The thesis concludes by considering these works in relation to the cyborg theory of Donna Haraway, suggesting that their portrayal of the necessity of inhabiting flux offers a new and less straightforwardly horrific way of thinking about human identity.

Dentre estes, ressaltamos a disfunção autonômica, achado pouco estudado e muitas vezes subestimado nestes pacientes. Ambos os grupos foram submetidos a exame clínico, incluindo o uso da escala SARA (Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia), o questionário SCOPA-AUT (Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease - Autonomic Questionnaire), além da aferição da pressão arterial nas posições supina e ortostática. Verificamos envolvimento tanto do simpático quanto do parassimpático. Não observamos correlação entre as manifestações autonômicas e parâmetros genéticos (tamanho da expansão CAG) ou clínicos, mas encontramos correlação entre disfunção autonômica simpática sudomotora e o envolvimento do sistema nervoso periférico<br>Abstract: SCA3/MJD is the most frequent autosomal dominant ataxia worldwide and characterized by a variety of symptoms, including motor and non-motor manifestations. Autonomic dysfunction has been described in SCA3/MJD, but there are only small studies and several important questions remain unanswered. In this study we had the following objectives: 1. To determine the frequency and the intensity of the autonomic manifestations in SCA3/MJD. 2. To evaluate whether the autonomic dysfunction compromises the sympathetic and/or the parasympathetic system. 3. To identify possible correlations between the autonomic manifestations, genetic and clinical parameters. 4. To verify whether there is correlation between the autonomic manifestations and peripheral nervous system damage. We have thus performed clinical and electrophysiological evaluation of 40 patients with molecular confirmation of SCA3/MJD and 38 healthy controls matched by age and gender. In the clinical study we used the SARA scale (Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia), the SCOPA-AUT questionnaire (Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease - Autonomic Questionnaire), and we measured blood pressure in supine and orthostatic positions. We also studied the heart rate variability at rest, during the orthostatic challenge (30:15 ratio), during the Valsalva maneuver (Valsalva index) and deep breathing (E:I ratio). We included in our study the spectral analysis of the RR intervals at rest and the cutaneous sympathetic response. The most frequent complaints in our patients are related to urinary, cardiovacular and sweat control. We found significant difference of the mean RR intervals at rest between patients and controls (811.8 x 933.4 ms; p=0.001 respectively). The 30:15 ratio was also different between the two groups (1.10 x 1.15; p=0.038 respectively). The Valsalva index and the E:I ratio were similar between the groups (p=0.373 and p=0.08). Spectral analysis presented distinct results in patients and controls, related to LFPA - low frequency power (p<0.001) and to HFPA - high frequency power (p<0.001). We found cardiovascular and sympathetic sweat disautonomia in 30% and 45% of the patients with SCA3/MJD, respectively. We found evidence of both sympathetic and parasympathetic dysfunction. We did not find correlation between autonomic manifestations and genetic (CAG repeat length) or clinical parameters, but we found correlation between sympathetic sweat autonomic dysfunction and peripheral nervous system damage<br>Mestrado<br>Neurologia<br>Mestra em Ciências Médicas
