The genus of Kodaianella Fennah, 1956 (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Issidae: Issini), containing three species: K. bicinctifrons Fennah, 1956 (Guizhou: Congjiang, Xishui, Yanhe; Sichuan: Kangding), K. macheta sp. nov. (Guizhou: Guiyang; Henan: Huixian) and K. longispina sp. nov. (Yunnan: Dali, Baoshan), is here studied. All species are restricted to China. The generic characteristics are redefined. The main morphological characters and male genitalia of the three species are described, or redescribed, and illustrated. A key to species in the genus is provided.

Credit risk is the possibility of a loss resulting from a borrower’s failure to repay a loan or meet contractual obligations. With the growing number of customers and expansion of businesses, it’s not possible or at least feasible for banks to assess each customer individually in order to minimize this risk. Machine learning can leverage available user data to model a behavior and automatically estimate a credit score for each customer. In this research, we propose a novel approach based on state machines to model this problem into a classical supervised machine learning task. The proposed state machine is used to convert historical user data to a credit score which generates a data-set for training supervised models. We have explored several classification models in our experiments and illustrated the effectiveness of our modeling approach.

Der Beitrag setzt sich mit den Fragen der universitären Translatorenausbildung auseinander, welche im Rahmen der postgradualen Studiengänge an polnischen Hochschulen realisiert wird. Am Beispiel eines postgradualen Studiengangs für Übersetzer und Dolmetscher wird der Entstehungsprozess des Lehrprogramms gezeigt, dessen Grundlage das Definieren der zu erzielenden Kompetenzen, Fähigund Fertigkeiten bildet. Es wird auf Ermittlungen einer empirischen Untersuchung hingewiesen, die es möglich machte, Desiderate für die universitäre Translatorenausbildung zu formulieren. Die Autorin bespricht im Weiteren Komponenten der didaktischen Strategie, welche in einem dynamischen und determinierenden Verhältnis zueinander stehen und gerade in dieser Determiniertheit zum Fokus der translationsdidaktischen Betrachtungen gerückt werden. Die geschilderten Annahmen und vertretenen konzeptionellen Ansätze werden in ihrer praktischen Realisierung geschildert.Postgraduate courses for translators at university level – strategic concepts, practical experience and resultsThe paper discusses the subject of postgraduate courses for translators offered at Polish universities. One example of such postgraduate courses for translators and interpreters illustrates the process of development of curriculum in which the desired competences, abilities and skills are a determining factor. The paper refers also to the results of empirical research which made it possible to formulate desiderata for courses for translators at university level. Moreover, the author examines the components of didactic strategy that are in a dynamic and determined relation to one another. The determined character of this relation is the reason why these components come to the fore of research on translation and interpreting teaching. Furthermore, it is described how all of the assumptions and represented theoretic concepts are applied in practice.

The ant-mimiking spider genus Myrmecium Latreille, 1824 is revised, including 38 species, all herein diagnosed, described and illustrated. The following synonymies are proposed: Myrmecium aurantiacum Mello-Leitão, 1941 syn. nov. with M. camponotoides Mello-Leitão, 1932; M. gounellei Simon, 1896 syn. nov. and M. obscurum Keyserling, 1891 syn. nov. with M. latreillei Lucas, 1857; M. itatiaiae Mello-Leitão, 1932 syn. nov. and M. vertebratum Walckenaer, 1837 syn. nov. with M. rufum Latreille, 1824. Myrmecium bonaerense Holmberg, 1881 is considered as species inquirenda. Males of M. dacetoniforme, Mello-Leitão, 1932, M. fuscum Dahl, 1907, M. latreillei Lucas, 1857, M. trifasciatum Caporiacco, 1947 and adults of M. viehmeyeri Dahl, 1907 and M. reticulatum Dahl, 1907 are described for the first time. Myrmecium bifasciatum Taczanowski, 1874, M. monacanthum Simon, 1897 and M. rufum Latreille, 1824 are also redescribed and illustrated. The following 28 new species are described, diagnosed and illustrated: M. amphora sp. nov. (female from Chichiriviche, Venezuela); M. bolivari sp. nov. (male and female from Caracas and Sucre, Venezuela and Colombia); M. carajas sp. nov. (male from Pará, Brazil); M. carvalhoi sp. nov. (female from Piauí, Tocantins and Goiás, Brazil); M. catuxy sp. nov. (female from Amazonas, Brazil and Puerto Lopez, Colombia); M. chikish sp. nov. (female from Huánuco, Peru); M. cizauskasi sp. nov. (male and female from Amazonas, Brazil); M. oliveirai sp. nov. (male from Amazonas, Brazil); M. deladanta sp. nov. (male from Sucúmbios, Ecuador); M. diasi sp. nov. In this article, I argue that Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret (2007) and its adaptation, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo (2011), ponder upon how one can retain one’s autonomy in a modern world increasingly associated with mechanization and standardization. Hugo Cabret and Hugo follow a typical bildung structure, charting the orphan Hugo’s incorporation into society via self-determination and effort. Both novel and film adaptation suggest that the tension between individual versus machine—or rather, a technological society that treats people as interchangeable parts, or cogs in a vast social machine—is not simply represented but also (re)produced by the film medium itself. That is, Hugo Cabret and Hugo illustrate how the antinomy between individual and machinic society in the modern age is replicated in the medium-specificity of film, i.e. the tension between filmic spectacle and film narrative.

In March 2013, taro plants (Colocasia esculenta [L.] Schott cv. Iliuaua) with leaves displaying veinal chlorosis and necrosis were observed on the island of Molokai. These symptoms were similar to those of taro vein chlorosis, a disease of taro caused by Taro vein chlorosis virus (TaVCV; family Rhabdoviridae, genus Nucleorhabdovirus). To explore this possibility, RNA was isolated from both symptomatic and asymptomatic taro leaves using the NucleoSpin RNA II extraction kit (Macherey-Nagel, Bethlehem, PA) according to the provided protocol, except that RLT Buffer (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA) was used as the initial extraction buffer. The RNAs were converted to cDNA using random primers and MMLV-RT reverse transcriptase (Promega, Madison, WI). The cDNA underwent PCR assays using primer sets Pol2A1/Pol2A2 and Cap2A/Cap2B which target the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and putative nucleocapsid genes of TaVCV, respectively (1). Amplification products of the correct size were obtained for both primer sets, and these underwent molecular cloning using pGEM-T Easy (Promega). Three clones were selected and their sequences determined by dye-terminator sequencing. After primer sequence removal, the Pol2A1/Pol2A2 product (952 bp; GenBank Accession No. KF921085) and Cap2A/Cap2B product (1,050 bp; KF921086) were found to be 79 and 84% identical to a Fijian strain of TaVCV (AY674964), respectively. Samples from 328 plants with and without taro vein chlorosis symptoms were collected from 35 sites on five of the Hawaiian islands and assayed for TaVCV using the Pol2A1/Pol2A2 primer set as described above. The incidence of TaVCV in these samples was 21.6%, with positive samples coming from each island. Although a very strong association between symptoms and the presence of TaVCV was observed, eight asymptomatic plants were also positive, suggesting the detection assay was able to detect the virus before the onset of symptoms. Conversely, three symptomatic plants were found to be negative, suggesting the Pol2A1/Pol2A2 PCR assay might not detect all strains of TaVCV in Hawaii. A digoxygenin-labeled probe (Roche Applied Science, Indianapolis, IN) derived from the Pol2A1/Pol2A2 amplification product of one sample hybridized with the cDNA of only four of nine TaVCV-infected samples collected from three different islands in a dot-blot hybridization assay performed at high stringency. This probe did not hybridize with the cDNA of five TaVCV-negative samples. TaVCV exhibits a great deal of genetic diversity in the South Pacific nations where it is found; nucleotide divergence of up to 27% in regions of the RdRp gene has been reported (1). The high genetic divergence between the TaVCV isolate characterized in Hawaii and the TaVCV accession in GenBank, as well as the dot blot hybridization assay results support this observation. The widespread distribution of TaVCV in Hawaii suggests it is not a recent introduction. However, the common practice of farmers sharing taro propagules has likely accelerated its spread. An arthropod vector of TaVCV has yet to be identified, so it is unknown whether natural spread is also occurring in Hawaii. Taro has both economic and cultural importance to Hawaii. These findings, representing the first detection of TaVCV in Hawaii and the United States, illustrate the need to develop virus-free germplasm for local, national, and international distribution of this important staple crop. For many years phytoplasma diseases have caused serious losses in most of the major grape-growing regions of the world, except South Africa, where a mixed phytoplasma infection was first reported in 2006 (1). During the early growing season of 2006, symptoms consistent with phytoplasma disease were observed in vineyards in the Olifants River Valley. Symptoms included yellowing of leaves, incomplete lignification of shoots, shortening of internodes, and the abortion of growth tips and immature bunches. Symptomatic shoots and leaves from grapevine cultivars (Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ruby Cabernet, Pinotage, Corinth, Chardonnay, Columbar, Chenin blanc, Sauvignon blanc, Sultana, and Regal) were collected during the early growing season (November) of 2006, 2007, and 2008. Total DNA was extracted from 32 of these samples (from single plants in the same vineyards over the 3 years) with the Invisorb Spin Plant Mini Kit (Invitek, Berlin, Germany) and tested by nested PCR using two universal primer pairs, P1/P7 and R16F2n/R16R2 (3). The first round of PCR of the 2006 samples yielded 1.8-kb fragments for 17 of the samples, while the nested PCR yielded an additional seven positive samples, confirming the necessity of nested PCR for reliable diagnosis. A similar trend was observed in the 2007 and 2008 PCR test results. All asymptomatic plants, which were included as negative controls, and water controls were negative by nested PCR. Twenty-four 1,245-bp amplicons, generated by nested PCR, were excised from gels, purified with a NucleoSpin Extract II Kit (Macherey-Nagel, Düren, Germany) and directly sequenced. Sequence data was compiled with the BioEdit Version 7.0.4.1 sequence alignment editor software (2), aligned using ClustalW Version 1.4 (4), and a consensus sequence was generated (GenBank Accession No. GQ365729). A BLAST search of the NCBI GenBank database using the individual sequences revealed high sequence identities (≥99%) with the aster yellows phytoplasma group (16SrI) and specifically with the subgroup 16SrI-B. In a comparison of the sequences of the 1.2-kb PCR fragments of 24 local samples with each other, sequence identities of ~99% were observed. These results clearly illustrate that all vines screened were infected with the same phytoplasma. Single nucleotide differences observed between different isolates may indicate the presence of closely related sequence variants of this phytoplasma. Aster yellows occurs worldwide and has been reported to infect grapevine–South Africa can now be added to this list. During the three seasons of our study, the area in which symptomatic vineyards were observed increased significantly, indicating spread by a biological vector. Moreover, infected vineyards were noticed in two other South African grape-growing regions. In contrast to the previous report, which reported a mixed infection of phytoplasmas of groups 16SrXII-A and 16SrII-B (1), PCR screening and sequencing of more than 40 individual samples from these areas confirmed these all to be infected with aster yellows phytoplasma only. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the detection and identification of an aster yellows phytoplasma causing grapevine yellows disease in South Africa. References: (1) S. Botti and A. This research aims to determine student competency obtained from productive subjects, one of the subjects that has an important role in measuring student quality. With the development of technology, student evaluations of productive subject grades can use data mining methods, one of which uses the Support Vector Machine approach. This method aims to build a classification of students' productive subject scores by identifying the variables that influence them. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the value of productive subjects at Public Vocation High School 1 Pasuruan can be predicted and evaluated using data mining techniques that utilize the Support Vector Machine algorithm. It aims to predict student grades in productive subjects by utilizing a logistic regression algorithm. The classification results illustrate that student grades in productive subjects are influenced by learning media variables, teacher teaching quality, classroom/laboratory facilities, interest, and motivation to learn. Apart from that, the Support Vector Machine algorithm has an accuracy value of 64.5001, precision of 56.0279, recall = 86.9952, and F1-Score = 67.882.

Introduction“Cage rage” is one of the most famous Internet memes (Figure 1) which made Nicolas Cage's stylised and sometimes excessive acting style very popular. His outbursts became a subject of many Youtube videos, supercuts (see for instance Hanrahan) and analyses, which turned his rage into a pop-cultural phenomenon. Cage’s outbursts of rage and (over)acting are, according to him (Freeman), inspired by German expressionism as in films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). How should this style of acting and its position within the context of the Hollywood industry today be read in societal and political sense? Is “Cage rage” a symptom of our times? Rage might be a correct reaction to events such the financial crisis or the election of Donald Trump, but the question should also be posed, what comes after the rage, or as Slavoj Žižek often puts it, what comes the “morning after” (the revolution, the protests)?Fig. 1: One of the “Cage Rage” MemesDo we need “Cage rage” as a pop cultural reminder that, to paraphrase Gordon Gekko in Wall Street (1987), rage, for a lack of a better word, is good, or is it here to remind us, that it is a sort of an empty signifier that can only serve for catharsis on an individual level? Žižek, in a talk he gave in Vienna, speaks about rage in the context of revolutions:Rage, rebellion, new power, is a kind of a basic triad of every revolutionary process. First there is chaotic rage, people are not satisfied, they show it in a more or less violent way, without any clear goal and organisation. Then, when this rage gets articulated, organised, we get rebellion, with a minimal organisation and more or less clear awareness of who the enemy is. Finally, if rebellion succeeds, the new power confronts the immense task of organising the new society. The problem is that we almost never get this triad in its logical progression. Chaotic rage gets diluted or turns into rightist populism, rebellion succeeds but loses steam. (“Rage, Rebellion, New Power”)This means that, on the one hand, that rage could be effective. If we look at current events, we can witness the French president Emanuel Macron (if only partially) giving in to some of the demands of the gilets jaunes (yellow vests) protesters. In the recent past, the events of “Arab spring” are reminders of a watershed moment in the history of the participating nations; going back to the year 2000, Slobodan Milošević's regime in Serbia was toppled by the rage of the people who could not put up with his oligarchic rule — alongside international military intervention.On the other hand, all the outrage on the streets and in the media cannot simply “un-elect” or impeach Donald Trump from his position as the American President. It appears that President Trump seems to thrive on the liberal outrage against him, at the same time perpetuating outrage among his supporters against liberals and progressives in general. If we look back at the financial crisis of 2008 and the Occupy Wall Street movement, despite the outrage on the streets, the banks were bailed out and almost no one went to prison (Shephard). Finally, in post-Milošević Serbia, instead of true progressive changes taking place, the society continues to follow similar nationalistic patterns.It seems that many movements fail after expressing rage/aggression, a reaction against something or someone. Another recent example is Greece, where after the 2015 referendum, the left-wing coalition SYRIZA complied to the austerity measures of the Eurozone, thereby ignoring the will of the people, prompting its leaders Varoufakis and Tsipras falling out and the latter even being called a ‘traitor.’ Once more it turned out that, as Žižek states, “rage is not the beginning but also the outcome of failed emancipatory projects” ("Rage, Rebellion, New Power").Rage and IndividualismHollywood, as a part of the "cultural industry" (Adorno and Horkheimer), focuses almost exclusively on the individual’s rage, and even when it nears a critique of capitalism, the culprit always seems to be, like Gordon Gekko, an individual, a greedy or somehow depraved villain, and not the system. To illustrate this point, Žižek uses an example of The Fugitive (1993), where a doctor falsifies medical data for a big pharmaceutical company. Instead of making his character,a sincere and privately honest doctor who, because of the financial difficulties of the hospital in which he works, was lured into swallowing the bait of the pharmaceutical company, [the doctor is] transformed into a vicious, sneering, pathological character, as if psychological depravity […] somehow replaces and displaces the anonymous, utterly non-psychological drive of capital. (Violence 175)The violence that ensues–the hero confronting and beating up the bad guy–is according to Žižek mere passage a l’acte, an acting out, which at the same time, “serves as a lure, the very vehicle of ideological displacement” (Violence 175). The film, instead of pointing to the real culprit, in this case the capitalist pharmaceutical company diverts our gaze to the individual, psychotic villain.Other ‘progressive’ films that Hollywood has to offer chose individual rage, like in Tarantino's Kill Bill Volume I and II (2003/2004), with the story centred around a very personal revenge of a woman against her former husband. It is noted here that most of Nicholas Cage’s films, including his big budget movies and his many B-movies, remain outside the so-called ethos of “liberal Hollywood” (Powers, Rothman and Rothman). Conservative in nature, they support radical individualism, somewhat paradoxically combined with family values. This composite functions well values that go hand-in-hand with neoliberal capitalism. Surprisingly, this was pointed out by the guru of (neo)liberalism in global economy, by Milton Friedman: “as liberals, we take freedom of the individual, or perhaps the family, as our ultimate goal in judging social arrangements” (12). The explicit connections between capitalism, family and commercial film was noted earlier by Rudolf Arnheim (168). Family and traditional male/female roles therefore play an important role in Cage's films, by his daughter's murder in Tokarev (2014, alternative title: Rage); the rape of a young woman and Cage’s love interest in Vengeance: A Love Story (2017); the murder of his wife in Mandy (2018).The audience is supposed to identify with the plight of the father/husband plight, but in the case of Tokarev, it is precisely Cage's exaggerated acting that opens up a new possibility, inviting a different viewpoint on rage/revenge within the context of that film.Tokarev/RageAmong Cage's revenge films, Tokarev/Rage has a special storyline since it has a twist ending – it is not the Russian mafia, as he first suspected, but Cage’s own past that leads to the death of his daughter, as she and her friends find a gun (a Russian-made gun called ‘Tokarev’) in his house. He kept the gun as a trophy from his days as a criminal, and the girls start fooling around with it. The gun eventually goes off and his daughter gets shot in the head by her prospective boyfriend. After tracking down Russian mobsters and killing some of them, Cage’s character realises that his daughter’s death is in fact his own fault and it is his troubled past that came back to haunt him. Revenge therefore does not make any sense, rage turns into despair and his violence acts were literally meaningless – just acting out.Fig. 2: Acting Out – Cage in Tokarev/RageBut within the conservative framework of the film: the very excess of Cage’s acting, especially in the case of Tokarev/Rage, can be read as a critique of the way Hollywood treats these kinds of stories. Cage’s character development points out the absurdity of the exploitative way B-grade movies deal with such subjects, especially the way family is used in order to emotionally manipulate the audience. His explicit and deliberate overacting in certain scenes spits in the face of nuanced performances that are considered as “good acting.” Here, a more subdued performance that delivered a ‘genuine’ character portrayal in conflict, would bring an ideological view into play. “Cage Rage” seems to (perhaps without knowing it) unmask the film’s exploitation of violence. This author finds that Cage’s performance suffices to tear through the wall of the screen and he takes giant steps, crossing over boundaries by his embarrassing and awkward moments. Thus, his overacting and the way rage/revenge-storyline evolves, becomes as a sort of a “parapraxis”, the Freudian slip of the tongue, a term borrowed by Elsaesser and Wedel (131). In other words, parapraxis, as employed in film analysis means that a film can be ambiguous – or can be read ambiguously. Here, contradictory meanings can be localised within one particular film, but also open up a space for alternate interpretations of meanings and events in other movies of a similar genre.Hollywood’s celebration of rugged individualism is at its core ideology and usually overly obvious; but the impact this could on society and our understanding of rage and outrage is not to be underestimated. If Cage's “excess of acting” does function here as parapraxis this indicates firstly, the excessive individualism that these movies promote, but also the futility of rage.Rage and the Death DriveWhat are the origins of Nicholas Cage’s acting style? He has made claims to his connection to the silent film era, as expressive overstating, and melodrama was the norm without spoken dialogue to carry the story (see Gledhill). Cage also states that he wanted to be the “California Klaus Kinski” (“Nicolas Cage Breaks Down His Most Iconic Characters”). This author could imagine him in a role similar to Klaus Kinski’s in Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampire (1979), a homage remake of the silent film masterpiece Nosferatu (1922). There remain outstanding differences between Cage and Kinski. It seems that Kinski was truly “crazy”, witnessed by his actions in the documentary My Best Fiend (1999), where he attacks his director and friend/fiend Werner Herzog with a machete. Kinski was constantly surrounded by the air of excessiveness, to this viewer, and his facial expressions appeared unbearably too expressive for the camera, whether in fiction or documentary films. Cage, despite also working with Herzog, does mostly act according to the traditional, method acting norms of the Hollywood cinema. Often he appears cool and subdued, perhaps merely present on screen and seemingly disinterested (as in the aforementioned Vengeance). His switching off between these two extremes can also be seen in Face/Off (1997), where he plays the drug crazed criminal Castor Troy, alongside the role of John Travolta’s ‘normal’ cop Sean Archer, his enemy. In Mandy, in the beginning of the film, before he goes on his revenge killing spree, he presents as a stoic and reserved character.So, phenomena like ‘Cage Rage’, connected to revenge and aggression and are displayed as violent acts, can serve as a stark reminder of the cataclysmic aspect of individual rage as integrated with the death drive – following Freud’s concept that aggression/death drive was significant for self-preservation (Nagera 48).As this author has observed, in fact Cage’s acting only occasionally has outbursts of stylised overacting, which is exactly what makes those outbursts so outstanding and excessive. Here, his acting is an excess itself, a sort of a “surplus” type of acting which recalls Žižek's interpretation of Freud's notion of the death drive:The Freudian death drive has nothing whatsoever to do with the craving for self-annihilation, for the return to the inorganic absence of any life-tension; it is, on the contrary, the very opposite of dying – a name for the “undead” eternal life itself, for the horrible fate of being caught in the endless repetitive cycle of wandering around in guilt and pain. (Parallax 62)Žižek continues to say that “humans are not simply alive, they are possessed by the strange drive to enjoy life in excess, passionately attached to a surplus which sticks out and derails the ordinary run of things” (Parallax 62). This is very similar to the mode of enjoyment detected in Cage’s over-acting.ViolenceRevenge and vigilantism are the staple themes of mass-audience Hollywood cinema and apart from Cage’s films previously mentioned. As Žižek reports, he views the violence depicted in films such as Death Wish (1974) to John Wick (2014) as “one of the key topics of American culture and ideology” (Parallax 343). But these outbursts of violence are simply, again, ‘acting out’ the passage a l’acte, which “enable us to discern the hidden obverse of the much-praised American individualism and self-reliance: the secret awareness that we are all helplessly thrown around by forces out of our control” (Parallax 343f.).Nicholas Cage’s performances express the epitome of being “thrown around by forces out of our control.” This author reads his expressionistic outbursts appear “possessed” by some strange, undead force. Rather than the radical individualism that is trumpeted in Hollywood films, this undead force takes over. The differences between his form of “Cage Rage” and others who are involved in revenge scenarios, are his iconic outbursts of rage/overacting. In his case, vengeance in his case is never a ‘dish best served cold,’ as the Klingon proverb expresses at the beginning of Kill Bill. But, paradoxically, this coldness might be exactly what one needs in the age of the resurgence of the right in politics which can be witnessed in America and Europe, and the outrage it continuously provokes. ConclusionRage has the potential to be positive; it can serve as a wake-up call to the injustices within society, and inspire reform as well as revolution. But rage is defined here as primarily an urge, a drive, something primordial, as an integral expression of the Lacanian Real (Žižek). This philosophic stance contends that in the process of symbolisation, or rage’s translation into language, this articulation tends to open up inconsistencies in a society, and causes the impetus to lose its power. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the cycle of rage and the “morning after” which inevitably follows, seems to have a problematic sobering effect. (This effect is well known to anyone who was ever hungover and who therefore professed to ‘never drink again’ where feelings of guilt prevail, which erase the night before from existence.) The excess of rage before followed, this author contends, by the excess of rationality after the revolution are therefore at odds, indicating that a reconciliation between these two should happen, a negotiation, providing a passage from the primordial emotion of rage to the more rational awakening.‘Cage Rage’ and its many commentators and critics serve to remind us that reflection is required, and Žižek’s explication of filmic rage allows us to resist the temptation of enacting our rage that merely digresses to an ’acting out’ or a l'acte. In a way, Cage takes on our responsibility here, so we do not have to — not only because a catharsis is ‘achieved’ by watching his films, but as this argument suggests, we are shocked into reason by the very excessiveness of his acting out.Solutions may appear, this author notes, by divisive actors in society working towards generating a ‘sustained rage’ and to learn how to rationally protest. This call to protest need not happen only in an explosive, orgasmic way, but seek a sustainable method that does not exhaust itself after the ‘party’ is over. The price of the global raw materials lasts to fluctuate upward since 2003. It makes the variable cost of the commodity of the manufacturing industry in Taiwan to pass-through un-completely. This study motivate to observe the phenomenon and to understand the ability of the competition and the management of the industry. This article uses the Model of the Two-stage Regression Estimation Procedure to analyze the correlation between the stock price and the raw materials price of the Electrical Machine Industry in Taiwan Stock Market over the period of January 1989 to December 2005, and to study whether the cost of the raw materials and its cost of exchange rate reflect to their commodity exists time-lag or not. Meanwhile, this article is also to analyze the degrees of pass-through, how the degrees affected by the product differentiation, the rate of marginal contribution and market share. This study contributes the significant conclusions as follows: 1.It usually takes over 3 months to reflect the cost of the raw materials to the commodity. The interval is more, the phenomenon is more significant, but the magnitude is worse. 2.It also usually takes over 3 months to reflect the cost of the exchange rate to the commodity. The interval is more, the magnitude is more. 3.The degrees of pass-through attributes to the product differentiation that is worse as the interval is more. It is positive correlation as the interval is under 3 months. However, the correlation is negative as the interval is over 6 months. But It is usually negative correlation at the magnitude of exchange rate. 4.The management ability of the production and the hedge of exchange rate will be improved at the respect of the rate of marginal contribution. 5.The market share effect to the raw materials, the variable cost is kept to afford by the industry as the interval is under 1 month. But the effect is not significant as the interval over 1 month. The market share effect to the exchange rate, the cost is also kept to afford by the industry as the interval is under 1 month. The effect is not significant as the interval over 1 month but under 3 months. However, the magnitude of pass-through is more as the interval is a half year or one year.

AbstractThe linear mixed model framework is explained in detail in this chapter. We explore three methods of parameter estimation (maximum likelihood, EM algorithm, and REML) and illustrate how genomic-enabled predictions are performed under this framework. We illustrate the use of linear mixed models by using the predictor several components such as environments, genotypes, and genotype × environment interaction. Also, the linear mixed model is illustrated under a multi-trait framework that is important in the prediction performance when the degree of correlation between traits is moderate or large. We illustrate the use of single-trait and multi-trait linear mixed models and provide the R codes for performing the analyses.

AbstractSentiment analysis tools are very powerful when it comes to obtaining a description of the emotional aspect of the contents of a corpus. This chapter describes the methods and tools available, and illustrates what can be achieved with them. Both machine learning ad lexicon-based approaches are described and used, as they can provide different advantages. Whereas machine/deep learning approaches are the state of the art in sentiment classification tasks, lexicon-based tools can provide further insights, as they are able to retrieve the actual sentiment words and expressions used in the corpus. Finally, the role of emojis is discussed and illustrated with a frequency analysis of the most prominent emojis used in the CCTC.

AbstractThe fundamentals for Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS) regression methods are described in this chapter. We first point out the virtues of RKHS regression methods and why these methods are gaining a lot of acceptance in statistical machine learning. Key elements for the construction of RKHS regression methods are provided, the kernel trick is explained in some detail, and the main kernel functions for building kernels are provided. This chapter explains some loss functions under a fixed model framework with examples of Gaussian, binary, and categorical response variables. We illustrate the use of mixed models with kernels by providing examples for continuous response variables. Practical issues for tuning the kernels are illustrated. We expand the RKHS regression methods under a Bayesian framework with practical examples applied to continuous and categorical response variables and by including in the predictor the main effects of environments, genotypes, and the genotype ×environment interaction. We show examples of multi-trait RKHS regression methods for continuous response variables. Finally, some practical issues of kernel compression methods are provided which are important for reducing the computation cost of implementing conventional RKHS methods.

AbstractMachine learning provides a set of new tools for the analysis, reduction and acceleration of combustion chemistry. The implementation of such tools is not new. However, with the emerging techniques of deep learning, renewed interest in implementing machine learning is fast growing. In this chapter, we illustrate applications of machine learning in understanding chemistry, learning reaction rates and reaction mechanisms and in accelerating chemistry integration.

AbstractIn this chapter, we present the main characteristics of electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). More specifically, this chapter is dedicated to the presentation of the data, the way they can be acquired and analyzed. Then, we present the main features that can be extracted and their applications for brain disorders with concrete examples to illustrate them. Additional materials associated with this chapter are available in the dedicated Github repository.

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the joint modeling of heterogeneous information, such as imaging, clinical, and biological data. This kind of problem requires to generalize classical uni- and multivariate association models to account for complex data structure and interactions, as well as high data dimensionality.Typical approaches are essentially based on the identification of latent modes of maximal statistical association between different sets of features and ultimately allow to identify joint patterns of variations between different data modalities, as well as to predict a target modality conditioned on the available ones. This rationale can be extended to account for several data modalities jointly, to define multi-view, or multi-channel, representation of multiple modalities. This chapter covers both classical approaches such as partial least squares (PLS) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA), along with most recent advances based on multi-channel variational autoencoders. Specific attention is here devoted to the problem of interpretability and generalization of such high-dimensional models. These methods are illustrated in different medical imaging applications, and in the joint analysis of imaging and non-imaging information, such as -omics or clinical data.

AbstractThe chapter gives an account of both opportunities and challenges of human–machine collaboration in citizen science. In the age of big data, scientists are facing the overwhelming task of analysing massive amounts of data, and machine learning techniques are becoming a possible solution. Human and artificial intelligence can be recombined in citizen science in numerous ways. For example, citizen scientists can be involved in training machine learning algorithms in such a way that they perform certain tasks such as image recognition. To illustrate the possible applications in different areas, we discuss example projects of human–machine cooperation with regard to their underlying concepts of learning. The use of machine learning techniques creates lots of opportunities, such as reducing the time of classification and scaling expert decision-making to large data sets. However, algorithms often remain black boxes and data biases are not visible at first glance. Addressing the lack of transparency both in terms of machine action and in handling user-generated data, the chapter discusses how machine learning is actually compatible with the idea of active citizenship and what conditions need to be met in order to move forward – both in citizen science and beyond.

Abstract This paper illustrates an integrated monitoring approach for wind turbines exploiting this Industry 4.0 context. Our combined edge-cloud processing approach is documented. We show edge processing of vibration data captured on a wind turbine gearbox to extract diagnostic features. Focus is on statistical indicators. Real-life signals collected on an offshore turbine are used to illustrate the concept of local processing. The NVIDIA Jet-son platform serves as edge computation medium. Furthermore, we show an integrated failure detection and fault severity assessment at the cloud level. Health assessment and fault localization combines state-of-the-art vibration signal processing on high frequency data (10kHz and higher) with machine learning models to allow anomaly detection for each processing pipeline. Again this is illustrated using data from an offshore wind farm. Additionally, the fact that data of similar wind turbines in the farm is collected allows for exploiting system similarity over the fleet.

Global warming and climate change due to rising levels of greenhouse gases have placed significant pressure on the automobile industry to adopt more clean fuel, transportation electrification, and waste energy recovery technologies. As a result, several electrically assisted or driven turbo-machines have been proposed such as turbochargers, turbo-compressors, and electrical boosters. Therefore, the electrification of turbo-machinery has been trending for the past decade. All the systems mentioned above consist of a conventional electrical machine connected to the turbo-machinery by a shaft, making the system relatively large, heavy, costly and mechanically complex. In this paper, an integrated electrical machine-turbo machinery concept is proposed. It consists of an electrical machine mounted around a salient rotor that is shaped like an axial flow turbo-machinery wheel. The electrical machine can be used as a motor to drive or assist the operation of the turbo-machine or it can operate as a generator powered by the gas or fluid flow. Compared to the conventional electrically derived or assisted turbo-machine systems, the proposed system is expected to decrease the overall size, weight and complexity. In order to illustrate this concept, an initial multi-physics feasibility study is presented. Electromagnetic and mechanical, performance are calculated and investigated using FEA. Additionally, aerodynamic consideration has been illustrated.

Inconel 718 alloy is used extensively in aerogas turbines and this alloy is most difficult to machine and highly prone to dimensional instability after machining. Such detrimental phenomenon poses enormous problem in engine assembly and affect structural integrity. This paper highlights the systematic research work undertaken to study the plastic deformation characteristics of Inconel 718, effect of process variables on machined surface, subsurface and dimensional instability. Also illustrated the technique developed for simultaneous optimization of several process variables such as cutting speed, feed, depth of cut, rake angle and tool nose radius, to control the residual stresses and dimensional instability, within the acceptable tolerance band of the component. Prediction equations were developed for residual stress, dimensional instability, tool life, surface finish and material removal rate. Predicted data were validated experimentally. This paper also presents the qualitative and quantitative data on dimensional instability with specific case studies of jet engine components and clearly illustrates the approach followed to develop technique to control such detrimental effect.

This paper describes an approach in which the wavelength of a semiconductor laser in an optical WDM communication system is sta­bilized and selected with a HOE. We have analyzed planar and curved as well as reflective and transmissive HOE. The optimum system results can be obtained by optimizing parameters. As an example, the design of a very compact HOE system is illustrated. Because of the lack of ideal IR recording materials, the HOE can be generated by a computer and fabricated by known techniques, such as by using an e-beam machine. We also illustrate an alternative CGH technique. First, a CGH with a prescribed phase distortion for the intended IR HOE is fabricated for a visible wavelength. The desired IR HOE can then be exposed with the visible light by using the pre-distorted CGH. Designs of HOE to be used for wavelengths of 780 nm, 830 nm, 1300 nm, and 1500 nm will be shown. The switchable wavelength spacing is 1 nm with an accuracy of better than 0.1 nm and switchable range is 35 nm. Computer simulations and experimental results will be shown.

In a companion paper [7] we formulate a broadly applicable class of mathematical models for describing the shapes of objects appearing in images. These models may be viewed as deformable bodies composed of an abstract elastic material. They are matched to images through the action of externally applied forces derived from image functions. Additional guiding forces may be applied interactively by the user. Three applications have served to illustrate the utility of the models: image based contour extraction, correspondence matching, and 3D object reconstruction. In the present paper, we deal with the discrete solution of the dynamical equations inherent to these applications. We focus on the direct and iterative numerical methods underlying our implemented algorithms for matching deformable models to images.

Abstract This paper applies a feminist critique of technology to develop a model for design trajectories, specifically the technology life cycle. The model aims to explain the origins of radical design changes even when scientific revolutions are absent (or distant) and radical performance improvements are inconsequential. The breast pump is introduced to illustrate how public health, social and cultural norms, federal policies, and identity influence a design trajectory. The breast pump’s delayed and limited evolution despite technology advances indicates the compounding consequences of these factors on a technology’s design trajectory. We then investigate the sewing machine (first patented in 1846) to explore this phenomenon more closely. Our research illustrates conditions under which a social norms lens might change the expected technological outcome predicted by purely economic or organizational models. By shifting the unit of analysis away from single designs to a trajectory of design cycles over time, this paper offers explanations for conditions under which designs will remain resistant to debiasing, with only minor incremental change, and the social dynamics associated with design discontinuities. Our model includes the social construct of gender norms as a socio-technological lens to examine the limitations of the traditional technology life cycle model. Finally, we discuss how our new model can update engineering design theory and pedagogy.

Abstract Machine learning models have worked as a robust tool in forecasting and optimization processes for wells in conventional, data-rich reservoirs. In unconventional reservoirs however, given the large ranges of uncertainty, purely data-driven, machine learning models have not yet proven to be repeatable and scalable. In such cases, integrating physics-based reservoir simulation methods along with machine learning techniques can be used as a solution to alleviate these limitations. The objective of this study is to provide an overview along with examples of implementing this integrated approach for the purpose of forecasting Estimated Ultimate Recovery (EUR) in shale reservoirs. This study is solely based on synthetic data. To generate data for one section of a reservoir, a full-physics reservoir simulator has been used. Simulated data from this section is used to train a machine learning model, which provides EUR as the output. Production from another section of the field with a different range of reservoir properties is then forecasted using a physics-based model. Using the earlier trained model, production forecasting for this section of the reservoir is then carried out to illustrate the integrated approach to EUR forecasting for a section of the reservoir that is not data rich. The integrated approach, or hybrid modeling, production forecasting for different sections of the reservoir that were data-starved, are illustrated. Using the physics-based model, the uncertainty in EUR predictions made by the machine learning model has been reduced and a more accurate forecasting has been attained. This method is primarily applicable in reservoirs, such as unconventionals, where one section of the field that has been developed has a substantial amount of data, whereas, the other section of the field will be data starved. The hybrid model was consistently able to forecast EUR at an acceptable level of accuracy, thereby, highlighting the benefits of this type of an integrated approach. This study advances the application of repeatable and scalable hybrid models in unconventional reservoirs and highlights its benefits as compared to using either physics-based or machine-learning based models separately.

The concepts and methodology of system identification and adaptive control in papermaking an presented and discussed. In particular the crucial problems of dead time compensation and proper interpretation of scanning gauge measurements are reviewed. Two new approaches developed recently in our laboratory to overcome these problems are presented. The key points in extending the monovariable adaptive control schemes to the multivariable case are discussed. Successful applications of selftuning control to machine and cross-directional control of moisture and basis weight are outlined. The difficulties associated with multivariable adaptive control are illustrated by an example of colour control on a paper machine. Finally, novel approaches to adaptive control such as genetic algorithms, neural networks, and multimodel techniques are presented. The promise of these recent advances in adaptive control is illustrated by an example of automatic compensation for species changes in kraft pulping.

As modern machine learning systems become more widely used, the potential costs of malfunctions grow. This policy brief describes how trends we already see today—both in newly deployed artificial intelligence systems and in older technologies—show how damaging the AI accidents of the future could be. It describes a wide range of hypothetical but realistic scenarios to illustrate the risks of AI accidents and offers concrete policy suggestions to reduce these risks.

New language technologies are coming, thanks to the huge and competing private investment fuelling rapid progress; we can either understand and foresee their effects, or be taken by surprise and spend our time trying to catch up. This report scketches out some transformative new technologies that are likely to fundamentally change our use of language. Some of these may feel unrealistically futuristic or far-fetched, but a central purpose of this report - and the wider LITHME network - is to illustrate that these are mostly just the logical development and maturation of technologies currently in prototype. But will everyone benefit from all these shiny new gadgets? Throughout this report we emphasise a range of groups who will be disadvantaged and issues of inequality. Important issues of security and privacy will accompany new language technologies. A further caution is to re-emphasise the current limitations of AI. Looking ahead, we see many intriguing opportunities and new capabilities, but a range of other uncertainties and inequalities. New devices will enable new ways to talk, to translate, to remember, and to learn. But advances in technology will reproduce existing inequalities among those who cannot afford these devices, among the world’s smaller languages, and especially for sign language. Debates over privacy and security will flare and crackle with every new immersive gadget. We will move together into this curious new world with a mix of excitement and apprehension - reacting, debating, sharing and disagreeing as we always do. Plug in, as the human-machine era dawns.

Scenario-based testing is a major pillar in the development and effectiveness assessment of automated driving systems. Thereby, test scenarios address different information layers and situations (normal driving, critical situations and accidents) by using different databases. However, the systematic combination of accident and / or normal driving databases into new synthetic databases can help to obtain scenarios that are as realistic as possible. This paper shows how statistical matching (SM) can be applied to fuse different categorical accident and traffic observation databases. Hereby, the fusion is demonstrated in two use cases, each featuring several fusion methods. In use case 1, a synthetic database was generated out of two accident data samples, whereby 78.7% of the original values could be estimated correctly by a random forest classifier. The same fusion using distance-hot-deck reproduced only 67% of the original values, but better preserved the marginal distributions. A real-world application is illustrated in use case 2, where accident data was fused with over 23,000 car trajectories at one intersection in Germany. We could show that SM is applicable to fuse categorical traffic databases. In future research, the combination of hotdeck- methods and machine learning classifiers needs to be further investigated.

In light of widespread evidence of parameter instability in macroeconomic models, many time-varying parameter (TVP) models have been proposed. This paper proposes a nonparametric TVP-VAR model using Bayesian additive regression trees (BART). The novelty of this model stems from the fact that the law of motion driving the parameters is treated nonparametrically. This leads to great flexibility in the nature and extent of parameter change, both in the conditional mean and in the conditional variance. In contrast to other nonparametric and machine learning methods that are black box, inference using our model is straightforward because, in treating the parameters rather than the variables nonparametrically, the model remains conditionally linear in the mean. Parsimony is achieved through adopting nonparametric factor structures and use of shrinkage priors. In an application to US macroeconomic data, we illustrate the use of our model in tracking both the evolving nature of the Phillips curve and how the effects of business cycle shocks on inflationary measures vary nonlinearly with movements in uncertainty.

Assessments, especially those used for high-stakes decision making, draw on evidence-based frameworks. Such frameworks inform every aspect of the testing process, from development to results reporting. The frameworks that language assessment professionals use draw on theory in language learning, assessment design, and measurement and psychometrics in order to provide underpinnings for the evaluation of language skills including speaking, writing, reading, and listening. This paper focuses on the construct, or underlying trait, of writing ability. The paper conceptualizes the writing construct for the Duolingo English Test, a digital-first assessment. “Digital-first” includes technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, with human expert involvement, throughout all item development, test scoring, and security processes. This work is situated in the Burstein et al. (2022) theoretical ecosystem for digital-first assessment, the first representation of its kind that incorporates design, validation/measurement, and security all situated directly in assessment practices that are digital first. The paper first provides background information about the Duolingo English Test and then defines the writing construct, including the purposes for writing. It also introduces principles underpinning the design of writing items and illustrates sample items that assess the writing construct.

The communication between connected vehicles and traffic signal controllers is defined in SAE Surface Vehicle Standard J2735. SAE J2735 defines traffic signal status messages and a series of 16 confidence levels for traffic signal transitions. This paper discusses a statistical method for tabulating traffic signal data by phase and time of day and populating the SAE J2735 messages. Graphical representation of the red-green and green-yellow transitions are presented from six intersections along a 4-mile corridor for five different time of day timing plans. The case study provided illustrates the importance of characterizing the stochastic variation of traffic signals to understand locations, phases, and time of day when traffic indications operate with high predictability, and periods when there are large variations in traffic signal change times. Specific cases, such as low vehicle demand and occasional actuation of pedestrian phases are highlighted as situations that may reduce the predictability of traffic signal change intervals. The results from this study also opens up discussion among transportation professionals on the importance of consistent tabulation of confidence values for both beginning and end of green signal states. We believe this paper will initiate dialog on how to consistently tabulate important data elements transmitted in SAE J2735 and perhaps refine those definitions. The paper concludes by highlighting the importance of traffic engineers and connected vehicle developers to work together to develop shared visions on traffic signal change characteristics so that the in-vehicle use cases and human-machine interface (HMI) meet user expectations.
