Abstract:
AbstractCountless eyewitnesses to the February Revolution of 1917 in Petrograd claimed to have heard or seen machine guns firing from bell towers and rooftops at demonstrators below. Rumors of vile government officials orchestrating these attacks circulated widely within the population and fed upon, and into, hostility toward the Old Regime. Yet an investigating commission of the Provisional Government, along with other objective sources, suggests that the entire phenomenon was at least overblown and perhaps even almost entirely a figment or people's imagination, suggesting that under the right circumstances an entire population can lose its ability to sort fact from fiction.

Abstract:
Correction machine gun finite element model to predict dynamic characteristics is very important. Through theoretical calculations and experimental test structure to obtain guns frequency response function, given the sensitivity of both the correlation function and expression, introduced a model correction method, and laid the theoretical foundation for a certain type of machine gun finite element model updating. Build a certain type of machine guns and modal testing and analysis system was carried out to test the vibration frequency response function. Boundary condition parameters of the machine gun was amended, and modal test results were compared to prove the validity of the model correction method.

Abstract:
The increasing number of homemade sub-machine guns in caliber 9 mm Parabellum received for examination, as well as cartridge cases discharged from this weapon, made it necessary to single out the marks which can be used for group identification. The article gives the results of generalizing and systematization of marks observed during the examinations made in the laboratory. This work singles out the marks and traces which can be observed on the cartridge case surface and can be used for the identification of the type and model of the firearm. The construction features of homemade sub-machine guns were investigated. Among these features are the construction based on open bolt mechanical scheme, the use of static firing pin, methods of barrel assembling and fixing into the body of the weapon, which can lead to the appearance of a hole in the chamber, etc. The article also shows the influence of the tool processing on leaving special marks and traces on the breach face. These marks can also be used for the group identification. Based on the results of the research the article distinguishes between the main signs, which can be used for group identification, the sings similar to the ones known in factory-made weapons and the signs typical of homemade firearms. The first group consists of the marks of ejector and the extractor cutouts and the firing pin mark. For these sings the article describes special characteristics which makes it possible to distinguish them from the marks commonly observed on the factory-made examples. To the marks typical of homemade sub-machine guns can be applied breach face marks, cartridge case deformation, caused by differences between the sizes of the chamber and the cartridge, cartridge deformation while shooting when the cartridge case is not supported by the chamber, perforation of the sidewall of the cartridge case, etc. The article also discusses the issue of cartridge case comparison and individual identification. Great variety of the traces and marks as a result of low-quality tool processing was revealed. This can be the factor which makes comparison more difficult. However, the big number of individual marks observed on the cartridge cases makes it possible to come to well-grounded conclusion. Key words: cartridge cases, submachine guns, type and kind of weapon, expert practice.

Abstract:
Machine learning and data mining have become aware that using constraints when learning patterns and rules can be very useful. To this end, a large number of special purpose systems and techniques have been developed for solving such constraint-based mining and learning problems. These techniques have, so far, been developed independently of the general purpose tools and principles of constraint programming known within the field of artificial intelligence. This paper shows that off-the-shelf constraint programming techniques can be applied to various pattern mining and rule learning problems (cf. also (De Raedt, Guns, and Nijssen 2008; Nijssen, Guns, and De Raedt 2009)). This does not only lead to methodologies that are more general and flexible, but also provides new insights into the underlying mining problems that allow us to improve the state-of-the-art in data mining. Such a combination of constraint programming and data mining raises a number of interesting new questions and challenges.

Abstract:
With the progress of deep learning methods the last couple of years, object detection related tasks are improving rapidly. Using object detection for detecting guns in schools remove the need for human supervision and hopefully reduces police response time. This paper investigates how a gun detection system can be built by reading frames locally and using a server for detection. The detector is based on a pre-trained SSD model and through transfer learning is taught to recognize guns. The detector obtained an Average Precision of 51.1% and the server response time for a frame of size 1920 x 1080 was 480 ms, but could be scaled down to 240 x 135 to reach 210 ms, without affecting the accuracy. A non-gun class was implemented to reduce the number of false positives and on a set of 300 images containing 165 guns, the number of false positives dropped from 21 to 11.

Abstract:
Abstract This thesis explores the influence of masculinity in twentieth century American foreign policy through examining the career of Guy “Machine Gun” Molony. Molony was an Irish American mercenary from New Orleans, whose career saw the transformation of Honduras from a banana republic to a recipient of dollar diplomacy. Unlike the majority of mercenaries who did not use their experience to build successful careers, Molony made a name for himself in American newspapers, becoming respected and even feared by policemen and politicians. His life tells a fascinating tale of the individual male in American foreign policy, where rebellious youth used war and instability to create heroic images of themselves. This thesis argues that the U.S. State Department borrowed from the independent mercenary model, building on a foundation laid out by men like Molony to implement dollar diplomacy. Guy Molony’s career is a telling example of how perceived ideas of manhood carried imperial intentions during the era of manifest destiny and the Monroe Doctrine. Although scholars tend to focus on Western expansion when examining the ideology of manifest destiny, this thesis explores how mercenaries like Guy Molony, followed by the U.S. State Department, continued to look southward to Central America as a means for American expansion.

Karayumak, Turker. "Modeling And Stabilization Control Of A Main Battle Tank." Phd thesis, METU, 2011. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12613767/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, a parametric model for a main battle tank electric gun turret drive system stabilization controller has been developed. Main scope was the study of the muzzle deviation due to barrel flexibility. Traverse and elevation dynamics has been modeled to include the drive-line and barrel flexibilities. Order of the models has been kept large enough to cover the frequencies dominant in the interest scope but at the same time low enough to create a parametric model which can be used in real-time fire control computers. Therefore a 5-dof elevation and a 7-dof traverse models have been implemented. These models have been used to design a classical feedback and feedforward controllers which performed good enough to meet 0.5mrad stabilization accuracies. After satisfactory results have been obtained from the stabilization controller, a special coincidence algorithm has been implemented by time-series analysis of the disturbance signal which is constantly being measured by the feedforward gyro. Necessity of predicting the future muzzle angular orientation due to the latency in fire is discussed and by using autoregressive modeling of the disturbance signal, future values of the disturbance signal has been entered into the observer model. The prediction horizon has been set to the time delay value between the trigger is pulled by the gunner and the ammunition exit from the muzzle. By checking the future coincidence within a very narrow windowing (0.05mrad) a 100% first round hit probability in theory has been achieved. This is assured since the coincidence inhibited the fire signals which were to miss the aiming point with a large error.

The aim of the diploma thesis is to design an algorithm for detection and recognition of the type of gun in the image. Firstly, the existing methods and techniques for detecting the various objects are briefly introduced in the text of the thesis however, the methods are primarily focused on guns. Next, the basics of neural networks are briefly outlined, followed by an overview of the most common detectors for deep neural networks. The second half of the thesis is devoted to the implementation of an application for generating images based on a 3D model of a gun, the creation of a data file and learning of a neural network. Finally, the results obtained, which clearly indicate that in order to cover a huge variation of real weapons, is necessary to generate a large amount of training data based on many different 3D models, are briefly summarized in the conclusion of the thesis.

O interesse, então, e estudar o processo de recriação que Pelevin faz da realidade pré-soviética e como ele a compara ao periodo pos-sovietico, apontando aspectos no romance que identifiquem a nocao de identidade e a mudanca a que este conceito esta sujeito apos as transformacoes sociais nesses periodos da historia recente da Russia.<br>One of the most renowned Russian writers of the 1990s, Viktor Pelevi distinguishes himself for the construction of characters and worlds in which they inhabit. The political and cultural transition after the end of the Soviet government, in 1991, is one of the factors that have an effect on most of the literary works from Post-Modern authors in Russia; although, Pelevin\'s success as well is due to singularities in his writing, which instead of only criticise the Soviet society before him, also includes philosophical and metaphysical thoughts sometimes viewed as too pretentious by the critics that discuss the transition. In The clay machine-gun, a 1996 novel, Pelevin remembers the battles of the Russian Civil War, in 1919, putting them as a parallel world within a madhouse in 1991. So, the interest in this study is to understand Pelevin\'s recreation of the Pre-Soviet reality and how he compares it to the Post- Soviet period, highlighting elements on the novel that trace the notion of identity and the adjustment it takes after the social transformation in these both recente Russian times.

Randall, Mark. "Reflections of war: changes in tactics and technology in the diaries and memoirs of Canadian soldiers 1916-1918." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/915.

Full text
Abstract:
The Great War was in many ways a conflict defined by technology. The rapid advancements in technology over the decades leading up to 1914 coupled with the outdated tactics employed by all sides created the stalemate of Trench Warfare. Improvements to the existing technology, the addition of new technology, as well as an evolution in tactics led to the breakout, and eventual Allied victory, of 1918. These changes in tactics and technology significantly affected the lives of frontline soldiers. This thesis asks if the tactical and technological changes, in the final two years of the war, were reflected in diaries and memoirs of Canadian soldiers serving at the front. The diaries and memoirs of the soldiers do reflect many of the changes found in the secondary sources. Surprisingly, however, the primary sources often provide more detail about how these weapons were employed by the Germans. Unless the soldier in question was directly involved in their use, or was witnessing a spectacular event, accounts of Canadian artillery, machine gun and poison gas use are often short and lacking in detail.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立屏東科技大學<br>車輛工程系所<br>104<br>The purpose of this research is to investigate the structure stiffness and strength of machine gun mount under dynamic load by using finite element method. The finite element model (FEM) is established by using commercial code HyperWorks. The material properties of machine gun mount are obtained from tensile test. The weight and center of gravity are measured by expirement to validate FEM. Experimental modal analysis (EMA) is conducted on the body structure to obtain the natural frequencies and mode shapes, which are used to validate the FEM. Good correlation between analysis and test ensures the FEM is equivalent to the actual structure of machine gun mount. Dynamic analysis is performed to simulation the structure dynamic response of machine gun mount under shooting by using commercial code LS-DYNA. Use SigLab and accelerameter to measure acceleration response of machine gun mount, which is obtained from experiment of machine gun shooting test. The correlation between experiment and simulation is relevant. The maximum von Mises stress is located on the position closed to bolt, but the yielding ratio is lower than 20 %. Furthermore, the structure deformations are lower than 0.3 mm. Therefore, we can conclude that the machine gun mount structure is well designed in stiffness and strength.

This thesis construct a comprehensive and concise model for quantitative processing and analysis, which provide an easy-to-follow procedure for the logistic staff. This research also enable the logistic staff to understand the entire process of generating, organizing, and analyzing of data. Consequently, the data processing procedure will lead to conclusions for finding out the possible causes, for example, inappropriate design or poor manufacturing technique, which are the dominate factors to cause product malfunction. Another consideration is the data processing procedure, it is important for the detection of the weakness of products. Based on these point of view, product quality can be enhanced, usage time will be extended and efficiency can be improved. This research can be of contributions for logistic supporting of the R.O.C.’s military force.

Abstract:
The machine gun—often called the killing machine—revolutionized modern ground combat, brought an end to the traditional infantry and cavalry charge, and changed the battlefields of war forever. This volume in theWeapons and Warfareseries describes the history of machine guns from the mid-19th century to the present, following both the evolution of small arms technology and the impact of machine guns on the battlefield, on military strategy, and on human society. This book discusses subjects ranging from the forerunners of mechanical and automatic guns, to the unusual history of the Civil War-era Gatling gun (the first practical machine gun, not used by the Union army because Gatling was a Southerner), to the machine guns developed for the world wars and those for present day use. Readers will see how the advent of the machine gun revolutionized ground combat—and how in some instances, technology outran tactics and doctrines, with disastrous consequences.

Abstract:
AbstractWe propose a new coating for light projection on transparent materials that can open new possibilities for design. What we often struggle with is the lighting of clear glass. By definition, clear glass lets most of the light pass through. We have found a way to turn glass surfaces opaque or transparent by using ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence coating. In combination with a UVA light source, we can project the dynamic content onto a glass surface treated with a special coating that transforms the UVA light into visible light. The added benefit of such a coating is that it can be applied to any organically shaped surface using a spray gun, not just flat surfaces. Another advantage is that the light source is nearly invisible to the human eye, especially with a UV light pass-through filter. We have created a prototype with a modified overhead projector to measure the light characteristics and documented the steps to reproduce our results.

Abstract:
Abstract Two-stage light gas guns are used to accelerate projectiles to velocities of multiple kilometers per second. These guns are used in many applications including experiments to understand the response of structural components within spacecraft and satellites to impacts of orbital debris. Obtaining a precise projectile velocity can be challenging due to the many uncertainties associated with these guns. Therefore, most gas guns depend on the expertise of operators to estimate the mass of projectile, mass of main charge, the propellent gas type, the piston mass, and the pump tube (PT) pressure that would yield a specific projectile velocity. These uncertainties lead to the current need for multiple and costly gas gun experiments to achieve a certain projectile velocity. This study aims to account for the uncertainties associated with two-stage gas guns using machine learning (ML) techniques. A dataset of 211 tests conducted at the UNLV two-stage gas gun with 0.22-inch caliber was used. Feature selection was performed and the most critical features were identified to train the ML models. The projectile velocities from each observation (experiment) were used as the dependent variable to produce training observations. Different regression techniques were evaluated. The predicted projectile velocities were then tested using the unused experimental dataset to verify the effectiveness of the models and to select the most accurate one. Among the tested models, the Random Forest model showed the best performance with R-Squared value above 94 %. The results showed that combining the experimental studies and Machine Learning can predict projectile velocities, saving time and cost of experimentation.

In order to improve the accuracy and the effectiveness of weapons, a wear analysis is deemed essential. The main aim of this research is the establishment of a new wear quantification technique using the profilometry method to quantify the influence of erosion on the performance of the gun. Thus, a Zeiss Micura Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) equipped with the VAST XTR gold high-end sensor and two NATO small caliber guns (5.56x45 mm and 7.62x51 mm) are considered. In order to quantify their wear volume after every N shots cycle, firstly, a new measurement approach is developed. Secondly, an uncertainty analysis is carried out for each measurement. Finally, a piezoelectric high-pressure transducer is used to measure the pressure inside the barrels after each CMM measurement. In order to evaluate the relationship between the latter and the wear volume, an experimental database is developed. The results show a similar correlation for the two NATO small caliber guns.

Abstract:
Abstract HVOF sprayed cermet coatings are used for wear protection in numerous application fields. Most feedstock powders can be processed successfully with different spraying guns but optimized parameters for high quality coating production cannot be transferred directly. Besides substrate temperature only particle velocity and temperature inflight and at impact on the substrate determine the resultant coating properties. Two typical HVOF powders, WC/Co 88/12 and Cr3C2/Ni20Cr 75/25, are sprayed using the kerosene fuel system GTV K2 and particle parameters are recorded just prior to impact on the substrate with the passive diagnostic tool Spray Watch. Detailed correlation of particle parameters and the coating properties porosity and micro hardness as well as deposition efficiency is worked out in order to deduce particle parameter ranges providing coatings with defined optimum properties. The transferability to another kerosene fuel HVOF spraying gun, Tafa JP5000, is tested. It is also shown that effects like wear of the nozzle can be detected by use of the Spray Watch. Secondary correlation of particle parameters and machine settings is carried out to build a base for straight forward closed-loop control of the HVOF spraying process applying process diagnostics

Abstract:
Territorial implantation and architectural analysis of the bunkers on Subsector IV, Strait of Gibraltar (Conil, Vejer and Barbate)The fortified system executed on the north bank of the Strait of Gibraltar from 1939 pursued two objectives: an offensive one, for which coastal batteries and lighting projectors were installed; and a defensive one, for which around four hundred reinforced concrete bunkers were built for machine guns and / or anti-tank guns along the coastal strip that runs from San Roque to Conil de la Frontera. According to the military archive documentation, the device for the defense of the land front and against landings on the coast was organized into four subsectors, designated with roman numerals from east to west. Subsector IV, the westernmost, extends from Barbate to Conil, through Vejer de la Frontera. Divided into two resistance centers, it is the one that contained the lowest density of positions, with a total of twenty-seven pillboxes. This communication has a double purpose. On the one hand, deepen the territorial implantation of the bunker network of Subsector IV, to understand that is fundamental the systemic conception between them and between them and the whole set of bunkers. Secondly, to carry out an individual and specific architectural analysis of each one of the works, focusing on the constructive characteristics and the existence of possible typological relationships.

Abstract:
The bunker network built in the twentieth century between the Bay of Cádiz and the mouth of the Guadalquivir RiverThe Andalusian Defensive Architecture Plan (PADA) justifies the legal protection of all Andalusian defensive architecture based on the historical condition of the region as a border of kingdoms and civilizations. It supports by using the Decree of April 22, 1949 on the protection of Spanish castles; to the subsequent Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage, which declared Bien de Interés Cultural the assets included in the Decree of 1949; and extending the term “castle” to the more generic of “defensive architecture” or “military architecture”. However, the fortification of the twentieth century in Andalusia hardly has any protection. Devices such as the north shore of the Strait or the Bay of Cádiz remain unnoticed and abandoned to their fate. The objective of this contribution is to present this device: the defensive network of bunkers for machine guns and / or anti-tank guns executed in the surroundings of the Bay of Cádiz and the mouth of the Guadalquivir River (from Chiclana de la Frontera to Almonte, passing through Cádiz, Rota or Sanlúcar de Barrameda, among others). Due to the territorial condition of the system, georeferencing and parametrization tools will be applied to the original planimetry located in the Southern Military Intermediate Archive of Seville, deepening in what was the setup and tactical sense of the works around 1945.

Abstract:
The present study belongs to a broader investigation aiming to reduce noise emissions in nail guns. This noise reduction objective may be achieved by nail gun concept design improvements. However, modifying the tool design requires precise understanding of it dynamics. Therefore a dynamic model of the system including accurate predictions of the tribo-dynamic interactions at the wood-nail interface generating the penetration resistance forces (PRF) appears to be essential. Since different wood products possess different structural/material properties, PRF is first evaluated for various types of wood product individually. Ref. [1] develops the PRF modeling strategy and examines the nail penetration process for plywood samples. The present paper proposes an empirical model predicting PRF imposed on nails when penetrating particle board (PB) at quasi-static velocities (20–500 mm/min range). A universal testing machine (MTS) is used to drive the nails into the wood samples. Each wood sample is composed of five panels PB screwed together. The sample size is chosen to reduce the boundary influence on the penetration process and to avoid the complete perforation of the sample. To eliminate the possible acceleration influence, the penetration speed is maintained at constant amplitudes. The MTS machine measured PRF as a function of the position. The objective is to prepare a formulation predicting PRF as a function of nail position. In order to extend the prediction formula application range, the analysis reduces the studied factors to dimensionless parameters. The analysis shows that the PB fabrication process results in panels presenting three regions of different hardness modulus. As a result, at the region transitions the PRF curves show large amplitude fluctuations. This layered heterogeneity makes the development of a high precision prediction model representing various nail sizes very difficult. Nevertheless, the final model produces PRF evaluations with overall precision greater than 88% for most of the nail penetration.
