Abstract:
In today’s industry, the competitive market, the short life time of the products and rapid change in customer demand forms a big trend of appearance of new manufacturing system. Reconfigurable Machine Tool (RMT) is a kind of solution for future machining systems, thus it can not only provide customized solutions to the operation requirements but also is cost-effective. Thethesis aims to create and implement methodology of RMT design for manufacturing industry. The methodology is introduced and extended according to the five principals of modular machine tool design. The methodology will be applied step by step herein so as to make the methodology more clear. First of all is to get the concept or process requirements from the customer. The customer requires three reconfigurable part families for a high speed milling application including tables, spindles, and cutters. In this case, to fulfill customer’s requirements and concept, the dual spindle (Multi-tool) RMT is selected as an example to interpret the RMT design methodology. Secondly, the most important point in methodology of RMT design is to analyze the valuable proposal of the four principles of modular design based on extensive experience. This work turns the four principles, separation, and unification (standardization), connection, and adaptation, to practical design methodology. Based on the classical four principles, the principle of reusability is an addition principal in consider of zero waste concept. In order to perform the RMT design methodology effectively, it is necessary to complement the advantages of the reconfiguration in dual spindle RMT design and the reconfiguration for other part families in according to the RMT design methodology. A final step utilizes computer software to model the configuration in 3 dimensions. And evaluations can be discussed in Degree of Freedom (DOF), stiffness analysis and number of modules.

Abstract:
The scope of this thesis will be focused on the machine FORMA Z1 which is one ofthe most functional amongst the sort of machines currently available in the market. Itprovides faster tool changes besides a huge variety of tool layouts with the possibility ofmaking a product with one only set up. Furthermore, the combi-beam rotation capability, together with dual sets of tools, give to the machine an exceptional competence.Through this project, some of the shortcomings in the usability of the machine are evaluatedto be able to give an accurate solution to provide it of extra functionalities, thusacquiring better efficiency during the performance. This solution consists of the developmentof a device which will aid the operator during the tool arrangement of the machine. The solution includes a platform with a laser that will point out where the operator mustplace the corresponding tool. The system will know where to locate it because the realmachine would generate an XML file which would contain all necessary data. All thisdata will be read by a computer and send it to the microcontroller that will control allthe system. The solution proposed improves the throughput and reduces the time needed in the bendingprocess increasing the facility in the process of bending metal sheet. However, thereare some disadvantages on the implementation of this device. The new machine wouldbe more expensive and the software would be changed to include the new system and theprogram that reads the XML document.

Dhairyawan, Amit. "Internet Tools for Machine Design." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36488.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to provide academic support to the oldest discipline of Mechanical Engineering, namely "Machine Design". The rapid pace of technological development drives every individual, especially students. The industrial revolution in the first half of the 19th century contributed greatly to the advancement of Mechanical Engineering. The theories and experimental data from that time, some developed almost a hundred years ago are still in use in the original form while others have evolved to keep up with the times. This thesis attempts to bring some of that classical machine design theory into a modern user-friendly form that is portable across the Internet. Here the user will be presented with an interactive menu of topics of Machine Design where each is split sub-categorically as Theory and Application. According to the choice made, short excerpts of theory are presented on the chosen matter. The theory will include but not be limited to the important relationships relevant to the design of the particular machine element. After the review of the Theory, the user will be able to navigate to the application where the relationships from the theory will be awaiting user input in the form of solvers. Since the primary emphasis of the thesis is about cultivating knowledge of the underlying theory, the applications will not be self-correcting or self-assuming. The user will need to understand the relationships sufficiently well prior to using the applications to solve homework or design assignments. The created Toolbox is available to all registered users through a login access. The user can then choose to review theory or directly access the applications of the described theory. The thesis successfully demonstrates the use of the Internet as the media for education.<br>Master of Science

Hedderich, Johannes. "Thermal stability in machine tools." Thesis, KTH, Industriell produktion, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-185117.

Abstract:
Reliable and stable processes allowing precision manufacturing are a core demand in today’s production. To achieve stable processes several influences on machine tools have to be controlled. Beside the other factors, thermal influences are among the most important factors infecting the production system. In this work two problems that are caused by thermal deviations are considered: Firstly the positioning error of machine tools, and secondly possible changes in the elastic behaviour of a machine tool due to changes in stiffness.Positioning problems due to thermal changes are widely examined in research and the focus in this thesis is laid to a machine tool control program, developed and used by “Company A”, which will be explained and evaluated. This program is used both to evaluate new machine tools but also machine tools used in daily production. Also the standard method of Company A to compensate for thermal deviations in production is shortly evaluated. The connection between thermal deviations and changes in stiffness of a machine tool is a fairly new field in research. In this work tests were done using the Loaded Double Ball Bar (LDBB), a tool to measure the elastic behaviour of machine tools during movement. The changes observed in the machine tool are documented over time and different thermal states. A couple of machine tools of the same type but with different specifications are compared and differences and similarities are highlighted and evaluated.<br>Dagens produktion, som är sträver mot allt snävre toleranser och bättre precision kräver stabila och pålitliga processer.

Abstract:
&ldquo<br>Numerically Controlled&rdquo<br>(NC) machine tools, which are automatically operated by encoded (digital) commands, are capable of machining components with quality and quantity. Manufacturing industry heavily depends on these machines. Many different control architectures have been adapted in today&rsquo<br>s CNC technology. Centralized control system is quite popular in industry due to its ease of implementation. If the number of controlled axes on a CNC machine tool (&gt<br>3), increases so does the computational burden on the central processors. Hence, more powerful processors are needed. An alternative architecture, which is not commonly used in CNC technology, is the decentralized (distributed) control. In this topology, the tasks handled by the distributed controllers that are interconnected to each other by a communication network. As the need arises, a new controller can be added easily to the network without augmenting the physical configuration. Despite its attractive features, this architecture has not been fully embraced by the CNC industry. Synchronization among the axes in the coordinated motion is proven to be quite challenging. In this thesis, alternative distributed controller architecture was proposed for CNC machine tools. It was implemented on a 3-axis CNC milling machine. Open-loop control performance was investigated under various conditions. Different communication protocols along with different physical communication interfaces and a number of controller hardware were devised. An industry-standard network (RS-485) was set up by interconnecting these distributed controllers. Different data transmission protocols were devised in order to establish appropriate communication methods. Also, computer software (a.k.a. graphical user interface), which can coordinate the interconnected controllers, interpret NC part programs and generate reference position data for each axis, was designed within the scope of this thesis.
