Chiles, Victor. "The impact of NC machinery upon manufacturing industry." Thesis, Aston University, 1986. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/11849/.

Full text
Abstract:
The changing face of industry due to the adoption of `New Technology' is briefly discussed, as are the corresponding structural changes in the workforce. The adoption of NC machinery is identified as one of the major innovations affecting the structure of industry. The development of NC machinery, and of relevant programming techniques are reviewed, and the problems arising from its initial sponsorship by the aerospace industry are highlighted. The process of its subsequent diffusion into industry is reviewed. Skill levels adopted for NC use in Britain and Germany are discussed, and analysed to create a structural pattern. These classifications of skill levels are then used to examine the organisational structures adopted by companies utilising NC machines. The greater use made of higher level shop floor skills by German companies is discussed. The results of two surveys of the use made of NC by companies in the North East of England are presented. Effective company organisation for NC use is described, and lack of foresight is shown to lead to vulnerability problems where skills can become concentrated in a few key people. This led to closure of a company in one instance. It is shown that small sub-contract companies have adopted a highly skilled shop floor workforce, and that they have survived in the present hostile economic environment, whilst companies who have used NC to de-skill the shop floor contracted dramatically in the same period. The lack of awareness of the potential for reviewing the product design in relation to the flexibility of NC, so leading to reductions in work in progress levels, is highlighted. Recommendations for skill structures appropriate to various sized companies and suitable training programs are presented to ensure that the full potential of NC machinery is achieved.

Abstract:
This study analyses the diffusion of numerically controlled machine tools in sixty Quebec and Ontario engineering and metalworking firms. Interviews with production management provide the data for a critical evaluation of labour process analysis and economic diffusion theory. Management decisions to adopt numerical control technology are found to be guided by technical criteria, contrary to labour process theory. However, economic diffusion theory is found to underestimate the extent of imperfections of knowledge of new technology in industry, the length and costs of learning to use new technology, the complexity of technological evolution, and the diversity of applications and methods of use of a particular technology.

Ward, Christopher M. S. "Novel NDE techniques in the power generation industry." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2010. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11656/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis presented here comprises the work undertaken for research into novel NDE techniques in the power generation industry. This has been undertaken as part of the Engineering Doctorate Scheme run by the Research Centre for Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE), which aims to bridge the technological gap between university research and industrial application. In this case, the scheme consisted of two projects completed in conjunction with RWE npower looking at current NDE problems in steam turbine and steam-raising plant. The first project was concerned with detecting microstructural transformation in steam turbine blades, which can act as a precursor to failure by environmentally assisted cracking. This project, and indeed, this entire thesis is principally based on electromagnetic testing methods. An eddy current technique for mapping the microstructural phases was produced and validated as far as was achievable; this offered a significant time-saving advantage over the previous method, by reducing inspection time from 5 man days to just 1.5. The technique has novelty in producing a 2-dimensional map of the blade surface which highlights areas where microstructural phases differ. The second project focuses on the detection of microstructural damage associated with material creep life expiry. This forms a review of the current state of technology and highlights potentially useful paths for future research in both established and emerging NDE technologies, including Magnetic Barkhausen Noise testing and laser-generated ultrasound. Both projects have provided tangible benefit to the sponsoring company and have pushed forward research in a number of technological applications.

Lampel, Joseph. "Strategy in thin industries : essays in the social organization of industry." Thesis, McGill University, 1990. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=74589.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of strategy in thin industries, a class of industries whose members include the aircraft industry, jet engines, heavy electrical equipment, and diesel locomotives. These industries have a number of common features which inter-relate to produce a unique configuration. Foremost among the attributes that make up this configuration is the sparsity and magnitude of transactions on which the industry must subsist. The decrease in the number of transactions, and the increase in their size, results in a "thin" industry. The sparsity and size of transactions combine to produce complex, unstable, and highly interconnected environments. These environmental conditions motivate firms to develop external linkages with other organizations. The successful management of external linkages will frequently depend on knowledge and experience obtained in previous relationships. Many of the problems created by external linkages can only be resolved once they are formed. At the same time, the knowledge required to resolve these problems calls for previous experience.
The dissertation is divided into two parts. In the first three chapters we explore thin industries as a type and as an environment. In the remaining three chapters we look at the ramifications of interorganizational learning on the management of external linkages. In the concluding chapter we discuss the implications of thin industries to the study and practice of strategic management. Three issues in particular are singled out: the decline of organizational autonomy, the limits of competition, and new directions for theory building. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Feng, Chao. "Treatment of oil-water emulsion from the machinery industry by Fenton's reagent." Scholarly Commons, 2014. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/220.

Full text
Abstract:
The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency for treatment of an oil-water emulsion from the machinery industry using Fenton's reagent was investigated. The optimal [H 2 O 2 ]/[Fe 2+ ] molar ratio for COD removal was 3. An orthogonal test was designed based on the optimal molar [H 2 O 2 ]/[Fe 2+ ] ratio to evaluate the significance of four parameters relevant to the treatment process, namely, H 2 O 2 dosage, initial pH, oxidation time and coagulation pH. The influence of the following parameters on COD removal efficiency decreases as follows: H 2 O 2 dosage > oxidation time > coagulation pH > initial pH. The COD removal efficiency was investigated based on the most important single-factor parameter which was H 2 O 2 dosage, as discovered in the orthogonal test. A well-fitted empirical correlation was obtained in the single-factor analysis and up to 98% COD removal was attained using 50 mM H 2 O 2 . With the increase of H 2 O 2 dosage up to 50 mM, the COD removal efficiency increased rapidly due to a higher generation of hydroxyl radicals. However, this effect becomes less significant as the dosage of H 2 O 2 increases. This effect might be attributed to the consumption of hydroxyl radicals with excess H 2 O 2 . The coagulation function of Fenton's reagent was confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Using the doses and conditions identified in this study, the treated oil-water emulsion can be discharged according to Chinese Standard JS-7740-95.

Abstract:
South Africa’s manufacturing performance relative to its’ peers and other local sectors has been in decline in the wake of globalisation and global value chains and reduced competitive advantage. Firms are central actors in the competitive advantage of competing value chains. In order to achieve and sustain competitive advantage firms, and especially manufacturing firms, have to continuously explore new market possibilities while at the same time leveraging existing competencies in an exploitative fashion. When firms pursue explore and exploit in combination the firms can be described as being ambidextrous organisations. When it is left up to individual employees of these firms to contribute to ambidexterity by deciding when to explore and when to exploit, and they are able to do this in combination, the individuals achieve what is termed individual ambidexterity. Although it is known that individual ambidexterity contributes to organisational ambidexterity, very little is known about the manner in which individuals achieve individual ambidexterity and what the outcomes of individual ambidexterity are. The current research project sought to gain a deep understanding of individual product designers’ lived experience of achieving ambidextrous outcomes in the normal course of their work in the earthmoving machinery manufacturing sector. A qualitative, exploratory research design was adopted and thirteen semi-structured interviews conducted with individual product designers. The interviews were analysed through thematic analysis to yield rich findings as reported here-in. Key findings reported relate to the key role managers and the individual’s own knowledge play in achieving individual ambidexterity, while the reported negative outcomes of individual ambidexterity are a key contribution to individual ambidexterity literature. As part of the analysis process a model was devised that allows for the identification of potential virtuous and vicious cycles of individual ambidexterity. Implications for stakeholders and the contribution to literature are also addressed.

This syudy aims to research the industry clustering of the precision machinery industry in the Taichung City. Almost the enterprises in Tainwan are small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs), domenstrated to different industry clustering, which in the northern region is service industry, in the southern region petrochemical industry, while in the central region is precision machinery industry. Earliest from the Japanese Colonial Period, many labors were trained related to machinery industry due to the goverment policy, and after 1950s the government receiving U. S. Aid some small firms related precision machinery industry established one after another, so Taichung City becomes the suitable locations of precision machinery industry gradually. With the hot sale of iPhone, Taichung city deserves the name of “Golden Valley.” This study collected the official information, used GIS buffer analysis、average nearest neighbor analysis and point density analysis to make and analysis how the precision machinery industries clustering In Taichung City spreaded. This study used the literatures analysis and the depth interviews to explore the location condition and the cluster effects of the precision machinery industries clustering in Taichung City by Poter’s Diamond Model and Micheal’s cluster effects. (1) Precision machinery industries clustering In Taichung City tracing from the Japanese colonial period, it’s based on the agricultural machinery at first, and people worked in the Japanese enterprises started their enterprises training some apprentices. Later, these apprentices cooperated to establish the famous Corporate Synergy Systems in Taiwan. (2)The influencing factors of the small firms locations of precision machinery industry clustering in Taichung City are associated with labors and accessibility, especially the small firms clustered on the hill side of the Taichung Basin. The influencing factors of small firms location conditions are in accordance with Poter’s Diamond Model. (3)There are three types of clustering effects of the precision machinery industry- horizontal clustering, vertical clustering and diagonal clustering, especially vertical clustering is the main clustering effects.

Abstract The machinery industry is a fundamental industry for a country and it also provides an important reference to judge the competitiveness of a country. Therefore, this research explores the strategy of the machinery industry in Taiwan. Several cases were interviewed and the data was analyzed by the strategy matrix analytic method. This study also discussed the strategy of Taiwanese machinery manufacturing industry, the competitive advantage and the future development direction. The discovery of this study are: 1. Increasing the variety and different characteristics will increase the market share of a product. 2. Raw material will be hard to obtain if a vender increase the type of products and decrease the amount of products. 3. Purchasing the material and parts from overseas will increase the cost and risk. 4. The quality of domestic machinery products and parts are not stable. The Taiwanese venders are not confident enough of the domestic products. 5. The ability of the system integration is not sufficient. 6. Insufficient ability to document the technical manual. 7. The average age of technician is too high. 8. Taiwanese machinery industry should promote the local market to increase the chance to collaborate with other international companies. 9. Compare with other countries, Taiwan has an advantage to Chinese market because of the geography. 10. The machinery industry is an industry which combined different special technology and it is highly relied on the special trained technicians. 11. Increasing the types of products, and reducing the amount of products will be difficult to reach the top of the economy society. 12. Taiwanese machinery industry normally allied several companies to take the advantage of integration. 13. Taiwan machinery industry has the perfect production industrial network system. 14. Taiwanese industry focus on alliance. This study collected the information by interviewing several venders and integrates the information. In addition, there are suggestions from three different aspects: 1.The technology aspect: Taiwanese Machinery industry should focus on “Specific and core technology”, because the technology of Taiwanese machine manufacture is mature. Taiwanese can sufficiently provided the machinery industry the needs. In addition, Taiwanese venders are also improving their manufacture and research development. However, how to cope with the advance technology of this industry will play an import factor of the future development. 2.The market aspect: From the information collected, some venders have various types of products and some have less. How to integrate and apply those different characteristic to the market will increase the Taiwanese venders ability to compete in the future. 3.The human resources aspect: Loosing the well trained personal is a problem that Taiwanese venders need to face. It takes a long period and effort to train a technician. How to educate and train new technicians should be a focus factor in the future development too.

In Taiwan, the government's Two Trillion, Twin Star industry plan has prompted the development of the large-sized TFT-LCD panel industry. The new equipment demand from TFT-LCD manufacturers drove local TFT-LCD equipment makers growing rapidly. TFT-LCD equipments have to be assembled in high-cost clean room. The factory space for assembly is one of critical resources for TFT-LCD equipment makers. In the past, many researches discussed job shop or single machine scheduling problems with time constraint. In machinery, factory space constrains scheduling. The most common way for scheduling jobs in machinery industry is to assign jobs based on experience. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to derive a method to schedule jobs for machinery industry, develop new dispatching rules, and investigate effects of traditional and new dispatching rules under different performance measures. In this research, we develop an algorithm, Northwest corner searching algorithm to schedule jobs into the shop floor. In addition, two space dispatching rules, largest space requirement (LSR) and smallest space requirement (SSR), are also developed for sequencing jobs. We employ randomized block design to investigate how different dispatching rules perform under different measures. After the simulation experiments and analysis of results, the LSR rule performs well under two performance measures (makespan and mean space utilization) and EDD performs well under three performance measures (makespan, total tardiness and mean flow time). We find dispatching rules affect most of performance measures significantly (except number of tardy jobs). The idea of this study caused from TFT-LCD equipment industry, but the algorithm and scheduling program can applied to similar machinery industry. They can help production planers to analyze the performances of scheduling in advance.

The Japanese electrical machinery industry has impacted the Japanese economic recovery and growth after the World War II. The development of the Japanese electrical machinery industry has fulfilled the supply to the domestic demand in electronic products and infrastructural equipment, as well as the overseas exchange and international cooperation in energy-saving technology and software application. The leading force in the achievement of the Japanese electrical machinery industry is the human resource training. The Japanese human resource training system fulfills the goal of the government policies and the business executive management by the close cooperation of the intermediate unites between the public and private sectors, reducing the risk of time-delay effect in the human resource demand and training. The Japanese electrical machinery industry establishes a set of vertical independent education system and research institution, supporting the innovation of technology in global competition. This article aims to explore the cooperation in human resource training between the Japanese government and business, to examine its impact on the patent and the factor of production in the Japanese electrical machinery industry, and to point out the myth in the relative studies on the life-time employment and industry-academic cooperation in Japan. The article finds that the intermediate units in Japanese public and private sectors are mutually complementary. The intermediate units in public sector, e.g. CSTP, AIST, NEDO, etc., set up the mid/long term plan to enforce the laws and institutions involving human resource training which have been passed. On the other hand, the intermediate units in the private sector exchange the information acquired in the domestic and overseas business branches and in the conference of solution companies and cooperate internationally with the intermediate units of public sector. These initiatives fulfill the human resource development, the production value of patent of TLO, and the scale of the oversea investment. The contribution of the Japanese industry-academic cooperation in human resource training is not obvious. The article finds that the industry-academic cooperation in the private sector contributes mainly to offer internship and academic conference, and the industry-academic cooperation in the public sector does in technical cooperation and patent development. Furthermore, the article finds that the example of the technical cooperation occurs in the electrical machinery industry business with zaibatsu background. Therefore, the researches on the Japanese human resource training by the approach of industry-academic cooperation might lead to the misunderstanding on the influence of the industry-academic cooperation because of the difference in the case-selecting. On the other hand, the Japanese human resource training system, which is different form the life-time employment, contributes to the confidence-building between the employee and the business. The article further finds that life-time employment has already not been one of the characteristics of Japanese business executive management. The Japanese human resource training focuses mainly on international cooperation, aiming to transfer the experience of Japanese techniques and quality assurance to overseas, in order to supply to greater demands and acquirement greater market share.

Machine tool industry is the mother of industry, and manufacturing activities are to be completed by any equipment and machine tools. That is, machine tool industry is a typical technology-intensive and capital-intensive industry. While Taiwan machine tool industry has experienced more than sixty years, it has demonstrated the world’s industrial growth along with the way of economic development in Taiwan upward. In recent years, however, the impact of international development trends and economic regional blocs to move, the mature and stable Taiwan machinery industry is facing increasingly tough international competition. Thus, innovation has become imperative to upgrade Taiwan's machine tool industry. In this study, two surveys were conducted to explore what types of talents needed in the machine tool industry and what types of abilities these talents need to possess to further assist the development of enterprises. Through the analysis of this study, we can clearly find that the industry needs people with more than one year internship experience, involved in industry-university cooperation, and with problem-solving ability. These three elements are the core needs for industry and talents rather than the certificates. From the causal viewpoints, problem-solving ability and expertise and technology are the two most important key factors.

We study etching methods of die making technology for electronic industries, and compare with the other production technology of die making. We also analyze the advantages and disadvantages of etching technology. This article based on the etching technology of a company. We will make a brief explanation for etching process technology, and compare the etching techniques with other technology, such as laser technology. There are two kinds of etching processes. 1. Through etching: etching through the steel and etched design of parts or molds. Decoder chip, such as stepper motors, special metal filter, photoelectric process enclosures, such as metal deposition. 2. Etching cutting: The graphic design of steel etched in some depth, but does not exceed the thickness of the steel itself. Such as all kinds of brand name, special arts plate, transfer mold lines, backlit panels. The biggest difference between the two methods is whether they run through the steel in the steel processing. And their processing characteristics will be different, but they have the same ways for resistant to etching and pre-treatment with the etching process. Through etching, such processing methods used for processing of thin steel, like mechanical presses to produce the processed products, but processed products of mechanical presses may be due to the size or complexity of the graphics processing of the steel caused by deformation. For the small graphics and complex processing products, etching process has the advantage compared with other technology.

In the face of worldwide competition and rapid changes of industry structure, utting emphasis on "human resource management and application" is the crucial to improve "competitive advantage" of enterprises. Thus, there is only way to improve productivity and competition of enterprises through developing employees'' competence, planning well-done on-the-job training, and improving employees'' professional skills. Adopted from the study of Industrial Professional Development Program Office, MOEA(2006), there are four main responsibilities of R&D employees in machine tool industry, including “product information collection,” “product developing goal-setting,” “whole machine tool design,” and “detail design.” This study aims to discuss and develop the construct of competences which were mentioned above, and to compare with each construct with AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) in order to arrange those important competences for R&D employees in machine tool industry. Results of this study reveal that “utilization of information analysis” and “new technology transfer consultation” are the most important two factors in the construct of product information collection. Besides, “mastering self technology skills” and “choosing the best developing program” are two important factors in the construct of product developing goal-setting. Then, “making correct assembly drawing ” is more important than “utilizing statistics software” in the construct of whole machine tool design. Last, in the construct of detail design, “effective communication to finish project,” ”designing standard product,” ”control time” are sorted according to its priority. Suggestions of this study not only offer a proper reference to talent program planning for R&D employees in machine tool industry but also set up a benchmark for government concerned about professional training programs. It is also valuable to professional skill development of future talents in machine tool industry.

Research & Development, (R&D) and innovation are important factors for business growth. R&D is the clear objective for systematic innovation activities to obtain new technology and new knowledge in enterprises. While businesses invest in R&D, they do not only pursue self-improvement but are also affected by industrial competitiveness. When the inter-industry has developed new knowledge or technology, it will be diffused very soon due to external economic factors. The business partners or competitors will put into research and development, imitated or modified for to avoid affecting the image of their products or market share. This chasing phenomenon can be explained by the spillover effect. Good innovation or research and development activities can encourage manufacturers to compete and to chase with each other, and thus enhance the entire industrial economy. The primary purpose of this study is to explore the so-called Black Hand Cave at Taiwan, that is the Gold Precision Rift Valley - Taiwan machinery industry which impacts the entire world now. The empirical results indicate that R&D investment will improves business performance and the spillover effects influence the opponent''s R&D and operating performance. Traditional industries have served as the cornerstone for the economic takeoff of Taiwan and much of this success is attributable to contributions from the electrical machinery industry. Because of outward-transferring industrial production and intensified international competition, the operating efficiency of listed companies has become increasingly crucial concerning the survival and development of enterprises and thus worthy of study,. Targeting listed companies in the electrical machinery industry in Taiwan, in this study, we assessed the operating efficiency in the 3-year timeframe before and after listing. Depending on specific industrial characteristics, the input items included fixed assets, number of employees, and expenditure ratios for research and development, and the output items included net revenue and earnings per share. We explored the corresponding coefficients between input and output. Based on the indicators of progress in operating efficiency, the performance of initial public offering (IPO) stocks and abnormal returns were analyzed. We provide opinions and suggestions for the electrical machinery industry, to facilitate decision making in allocating input and output resources, thus improving operating efficiency. The analytical results can provide a reference for the electrical machinery industry. The empirical analysis revealed that: (a) Statistically, the indicators of progress in operating efficiency levels attained a mean of 0.9760 (less than 1). The retrogressive group comprised 34 companies compared with 19 in the progressive group, indicating that for a majority of the listed companies, the operating efficiency during the 3 years after the listing was lower compared with the 3-year period prior to the listing. (b) A honeymoon period effect exists for IPO stocks. Regarding timing, new stocks are most effectively issued when the overall economic situation is in a boom period, in which funds can be successfully raised, and market returns gained. (c) At the initial listing stage, abnormal returns exist. The performance indicators show a declining tendency during the 3 years following the IPO, in which short-term abnormal returns exist.

Although most of Taiwanese Machinery Companies are small and medium enterprise (SME), they are hidden champions of their market. Unlike western enterprise, hidden champions in Taiwan are often with very conservative attitude about expending scale of their business, even have very strong technical ability. One of the most reputably and successful Taiwanese machinery companies is HIWIN technologies. In the early stage of HIWIN, it had bad structure in both financial and cultural. Eric Y.T Chao, current Chairman and former buyer of HIWIN reshaped HIWIN with his experience in rectifying SAN SHING fast tech corporate and led HIWIN technologies becoming world top 3 manufacturer of ball screw and linear guideway. Before merging overseas’ corporate, most of Taiwanese company will try to merge local corporate in order to earn experience of implementation and post management of M&A. But HIWIN is unlike most of Taiwanese company, merged German machinery company at their very first time, What kind of management strategy and style they choose to manage German employees after merging in order to prevent unsuccessful M&A ? HIWIN also merged Israel driver company and Taiwanese machinery company after, how did they evaluate their merging target and what is the meaning in both technical and strategical aspects to HIWIN? How did HIWIN rearrange their resources from merging and create synergy for the sake of becoming world-leading industrial automation and robot company? We are going to analysis and break down HIWIN’s M&A strategy from choosing target to post management by case study, and give my personal comments and advices about HIWIN.

The packaging machinery industry progress has been developed based on small-medium enterprises, as this industry survives in a small scale market environment, thus, the amount of competitors have been climb up during past 50 years, without a doubt, this market has became tremendous huge. In recent years, all developed countries in worldwide have encountered competitions and it relates to demographic issue and cost of labour. Moreover, Industry 4.0 topic has triggered a great transformation of industry production; intellectual production helps developed countries to cost down labour expense, and keeps improving quality to boost up the competitiveness of enterprises. Therefore, these enterprises from developed countries do not need to establish production plants in developing countries to down costs and expenses. Industry 4.0 is not just a growing topic amongst enterprises, it’s re-lating to the competitiveness between nations. Intellectual production has to work with intellectual production devices and equipments, packaging machineries are crucial equipments when we focus on a whole line pro-duction, from front inner packaging and final outer packaging, and it con-nects to warehouse and logistics, the significance of packaging machineries is comparable to production machineries. Despite of Taiwanese packaging industry does not stand a great mar-ket share in this world, but we’re a significant production base and nation, and the exporting value is 80% of total output value, with this figure, it’s quite high in this industry, all enterprises should take this as a serious matter, and it’s all about the competitiveness. For SMEs in packaging in- dustry, they are facing lack of professions, labours, lands, and the invest-ment cost is relatively high compare to other developed countries. The en-tire environment has great affect on all enterprise’s competitiveness. As this Industry 4.0 revolution wave rose, it’s definitely a turning point, so enterprises should follow this wave to climb up or drowning by this wave and disappeared? As one of the packaging machinery enterprises, I hope this research paper helps us to understand more about this industry in Taiwan, by fac-ing international challenges and the performance of Taiwanese packaging machinery enterprises, the present, and the future development and con-text to provide reference to this industry.
