Full textSwedish hip hop is a growing genre that can be understood to be connected with socially stigmatized areas. The purpose of this work is to map out and analyze the content of chosen Swedish hip hop songs. In the study Swedish hip hop lyrics were analyzed in two parts. The first one was an outline of 100 hip hop songs in order to map out the occurrence of different themes, and the second one was an in-depth analysis of ten songs. The material were analyzed with help of previous research and the theoretical concepts territorial stigmatization, macho culture and branding. The result of the study shows that there’s aspects of territorial stigmatization and macho culture within the songs, as well as branding regarding the Projects. The study can be understood to give some insight through the thematic features that can be found within Swedish hip hop. Among other things the possible consequences for the young men listening to this type of music were discussed.

Full textIn previous interview with the trade union Byggnads, it emerged that the construction industry is characterized by a culture called macho culture. The work environment is characterized by greed, tough working climate, and sexist or gender discriminating language. Byggnads, together with the Byggcheferna, started a campaign 2015 called the "Stop macho culture". In which they argue that the construction industry is one of Sweden's least-equalized industry and that more women are needed but also that the macho culture must be removed completely. Therefore, in this study we have chosen to investigate the exact macho culture and women's status in the construction industry by interviewing both supervisors and employees to arrive at a result. The result found that a macho culture exists when abusive as well as sexist and gender discriminating words occur every day. However, this does not irritate employees or supervisors in any way as they point out that this is the way the construction industry works. Interviewers also consider that women in the workplace are positive, none of the interviewees sees any obstacles in the sex but rather that the woman must have interests that are more male. The conclusions we have come to are that education is what is required and missing, education for both the protection officer, the supervisor and the employees. This to build awareness that women are needed in the industry and that they can do the same work as men can.

Full textAim The purpose of the study is to investigate the prevalence of norms regarding masculinity among high school boys and whether these norms have a relation to boys’ attitude to studies. The following questions intend to be answered in the study: To what extent do boys feel that there is a macho culture in school? Is there any connection between macho culture at school and boys’ study hours? Method This essay consisted of a quantitative method with questionnaires as a survey form. A questionnaire was distributed to boys at a number of selected high schools in the Stockholm area. A total of 169 boys participated in the study and 147 questionnaires were usable. Boys in grades eight and nine were recruited where individuals born in 2004-2005 participated in the study. The survey included two different parts, one of which included statements about macho culture and the other included questions about participants demographics and study hours. Microsoft Excel and the statistical program Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) were then used to analyze and process all the data obtained from the survey. Results The compilation of the data obtained from the survey showed that the majority, just over 75%, of the boys spent 0-3 hours per week on schoolwork beyond lesson time. The study's results also showed that a high level of macho culture was common in the school based on the boys’ experience, a figure that corresponds to just over 25%. The result also gave a significant, positive connection between the boys’ perceived prevalence of macho culture and their study hours. Conclusions The results indicate that the majority of the boys spent a few hours per week on schoolwork beyond lesson time and that these boys also experienced a higher level of macho culture within the school compared to the boys who spent more hours on schoolwork.

Full textThe construction industry is male-dominated and suffers from a lack of diversity. Studies have shown that macho culture and a rough jargon leads to people leaving the industry.NCC is one of the biggest actors on the swedish construction market and the purpose of this study was to research how NCC Building Örebro/Värmland works with questions regarding diversity and what results it has generated. Attitudes towards diversity among the employees and differences in diversity between the counties have also been researched as a part of this study.Data was collected through literature studies, interviews and a survey. The interviewees were chosen for their function in the company or their part in a specific project.A quantitative survey was performed to research the ethnic diversity in the division and to research the employees perception of the working environment and attitudes towards diversity and gender equality. The research shows that NCC are working actively with questions regarding diversity, gender equality and inclusion and that it most probably contributed to a better psychosocial work environment. However, it’s clear that macho culture and rough jargon still exists at the workplaces. The results of the research also indicates that a majority of the employees have a positive attitude towards diversity and gender equality and that they are willing to work with the issue. There are clear differences between the counties regarding diversity among the employees. The research shows that there is a larger proportion of women among the employees in the construction phase in Värmland and that it probably have contributed to positive cultural change and an improvement of the psychosocial work environment.

Full textA lack of work environment and development opportunities for women in the construction production sector might lead to loss of valuable skills. It has been noted that the construction production is imprinted by an older maleculture. The construction industry is generally a male dominated industry and the gender distribution is most uneven within the construction production where there is a shortage of women.Women who work in construction production often choose to leave their role for another within the industry after a couple of years. The ambition with this study is through surveys map how women experience and have experienced their work in construction production. The goal is to find factors and patterns that later on can be used by the construction industry in effort on the matter of attracting and retaining more women in construction production. This essay has partially been written with the construction company NCC Building Örebro/Värmland. Through the results of this essay, NCC wants to be able to compare and weigh up how far they as a company have come in the gender equality issues compared to the rest of the construction production sector. In order to find answers to the essays questions a literature study and data collection was done. Multiple surveys were sent out to both women and men with different roles in the construction production. The respondents had the opportunity to answer with different alternatives and in some of the questions write comments. The surveys were sent out to women employed at NCC Örebro/värmland and to women in the industry at different workplaces and locations around Sweden. A survey was also sent out to a group of men at NCC Örebro/Värmland in order to make a comparison on equivalent questions that were asked both to women and men. The results indicate that women in the construction production do not always have the same possibilities as men. When a comparison was carried out between women at NCC Örebro/Värmland and other women with experience in the construction industry it shows a small percentage difference in certain matters that NCC has a more prosperous workplace for women. Keywords:

Full textIn this bachelor essay we´ve made an participant observation on a website where sexual services are for sale. This website contains a forum where sexbuyers and sexsellers discuss their thoughts about sex and purchase of sexual services. Sexbuyers often express themselves as victims because of their own extreme sexual cravings. They argue that as long as there is sexual services for sale, there is going to be a demand to buy them. We notice that there is an acceptance for sexbuyers to have an temporary sexual relation in exchange for money. We notice in our studies that these so called “intemperated horny men” tend to protect one another. We consider, in contrast to the sexbuyers, that as long as there is an existing “craving” for sexual services, the phenomenon of sexual trafficking will continue. Much because many victims of sexual trafficking are being sold as if it was by their own free will. Because of this, we will in this bachelor essay problematize sexual trafficking as a consequence of sexbuyers actions. We as mediaproducers would like to, through pictures, shed light on the consequences of sexual trafficking and at the same time emphasize this through provocative internet activism.

Full textThe following study examined how female correctional officers in class 1 prisons for male inmates in Sweden perceive how they are being treated based on their femininity. Furthermore, the study examined how female correctional officers are being treated by their male colleagues and inmates. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with eight women between the ages of 21 to 25, who are or have been employed at a class 1 prison. The participants described themselves as subordinate to the men. Moreover, the male inmates as well as the male colleagues used a sexist and degrading jargon against women. Some characteristics, however, were shown to lead to higher perceived safety as a prison officer. A higher age and longer experience were considered factors that simplified the participants' work. In conclusion, the results were largely consistent with previous research in the area. Surprisingly, the results showed that the macho culture in the prisons distinguished itself to such a high degree, even though Sweden has been proven to be one of the most equal countries in the world. The results confirmed that the Prison and Probation Service is in a need of education, in order to prevent the inequality that prevails.

Full textPurpose: The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to investigate if, and how, the male dominated construction work and the macho culture that may exist at the workplace have affected the female officers choices of occupation, and if they are affected by prevailing norms and structures at work. Method: The data collection for this bachelor thesis was conducted in a qualitative form of semi-structured interviews with seven female officials from four different construction companies in Jönköping County. In addition, a literature study was conducted that formed the basis for the study. Findings: In the early stages of their career, the interviewed women reflected to a varied extent on the macho culture and the male jargon that might be evident in their future workplaces. The survey also shows that respondents in later stages experienced the macho culture on a small or larger scale. However, everyone did not see it as particularly remarkable or negative, while some testified to situations directly linked to macho culture. Finally, the survey showed that some interview respondents experienced differences in the conditions for both performing their work and making a career. Implications: Most women are alone at the construction sites and have to some extent experienced the macho culture. All interview respondents agree that we are going in the right direction on both conditions and response. Some, however, talk about situations with both work colleagues and company management that somehow made them feel ill or unfairly treated. The recommendation is that companies should market the construction industry and especially the construction site towards women. More study visits from the school, then the construction companies can show the construction site and the different occupational roles that are there. The construction companies should also try to get more women into leading positions, which in turn can become role models for other women. The conditions should also be more even when it comes to, for example, work clothes and changing rooms. Finally, the construction companies should review whether it is possible to change the services to become more flexible with the working hours. Limitations: As the study only examines a small number of women in a geographically limited area, the work is not expected to give any generalizable conclusions for the construction industry. The results give a glimpse of some women's thoughts and experiences of working in a male-dominated environment. Supplementing the study with, for example, questionnaires to a larger sample of women would probably have increased the possibility of giving more generalizable conclusions.

Full textThe purpose of this study has been to examinate and compare the representation of men and masculinity in the covers of the Swedish lifestyle magazine Café in 2003 and in 2019. Using qualitative semiotic analysis with a feminist perspective, we have examined 5 covers from 2003 and 5 covers from 2019. Our study has concluded that men and masculinity are represented in similar ways in 2003 and 2019. For example, we have concluded that the reconstruction of cultural myths and stereotypes appears in representation of masculinity during both years. The main difference is that the covers of 2003 constructs hegemonic masculinity through the objectification of women, and 2019 mainly through the aestheticization of men.
