Abstract Transporting a stereo video stream over an unreliable channel can degrade severely the video quality. Network congestion is one of the important factors affecting the video quality. To improve the stereo video quality, a stereo video congestion control method, based on the macroblock importance, is proposed. Firstly, the importance of every macroblock is calculated according to its influence on the current frame and future frames. Then, combined with the importance information, all macroblocks of a frame are divided into three levels. Finally, the packets are transported with the help

This paper introduces a smoothing and preprocessing (S+P) technique for a line-based one-bit-transform (1BT) motion estimation scheme. In the proposed algorithm, a smoothing threshold ( Threshold S) is incorporated into the 1BT convolutional kernel. By using the smoothing threshold, scattering noise which is a common problem in most 1BT images can be greatly reduced. After the transformation, the 1BT images for the current and reference frames are divided into a number of macroblocks. As for JMVC (Joint Multi-view Video Coding), when executing motion and disparity estimation simultaneously, the implicit correlation of reference directions between current and neighboring macroblocks is neglected, and this will lead to useless searching. To reduce this redundancy, we propose an estimation algorithm which sets search ranges properly by exploiting the mentioned correlation. The proposed algorithm first gets the reference directions of macroblocks in the left, top and top right direction of current macroblock, and compares them with current reference direction, then sets search

This paper examines the impact of data partitioning form on wireless network access control and proposes a selective dropping scheme based on dropping the partition carrying intra-coded macroblocks. Data partitioning is an error resiliency technique that allows unequal error protection for transmission over ‘lossy’ channels. Including a per-picture, cyclic intra-refresh macroblock line guards against temporal error propagation. The authors show that when congestion occurs, it is possible to gain up to 2 dB in video quality over assigning a stream to a single IEEE 802.11e access category. The s

In order to achieve this, a robust rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique is employed to select best coding mode and reference frame for each macroblock. Error Resilient Coding tools are the methods to avoid or reduce the amount of corruption in video by altering the encoding algorithm. One of them is Flexible Macroblock Ordering (FMO) which provides us with ordering macroblocks of the frames flexibly. Six of them have definite ordering pattern and the last one, called explicit type, can get any order. In this thesis two explicit type algorithms, one of which is new, are explained and the performance of different FMO types in wired and wireless communication are evaluated. Error resilience is an important issue when coded video data is transmitted over wired and wireless networks. Errors can be introduced by network congestion, mis-routing and channel noise. These transmission errors can result in bit errors being introduced into the transmitted data or packets of data being completely lost. Consequently, the quality of the decoded video is degraded significantly. This thesis describes new techniques for minimising this degradation. To verify video error resilience tools, it is first necessary to consider the methods used to carry out experimental measurements.
