Abstract:
A mirror subjected to a fast mechanical oscillation emits photons out of the quantum vacuum—a phenomenon known as the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE). The mirror is usually treated as an infinite metallic surface. Here, we show that, in realistic experimental conditions (mirror size and oscillation frequency), this assumption is inadequate and drastically overestimates the DCE radiation. Taking the opposite limit, we use instead the dipolar approximation to obtain a simpler and more realistic treatment of DCE for macroscopic bodies. Our approach is inspired by a microscopic theory of DCE, which

One way to improve a search strategy in a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is to reduce the search space towards the feasible region where the global optimum is located. The paper describes the effect of an adjustment of a search space size of GA on the macroscopic statistical properties of population such as the average fitness and the variance fitness of population. The set of equations of motion was derived for the one-max problem that expressed the macroscopic statistical properties of population after an adjustment of a search space size in terms of those prior to the operation.

This implies that all macroscopic quantum states, which are characterized by a QFI that is quadratic in N, are fragile under decoherence, and cannot be maintained if the system is not perfectly isolated. In the micro-forming process when the thickness of the sheet material is comparable to the intrinsic length scales of that material, deformation behaviour differs from that which is expected in the macroscopic sheet material. In this study, size effects of SS304 foils have been investigated using tensile and limiting dome height tests along with careful microstructural investigations. SS304 foils of differing thicknesses but similar grain size have been deformed under varying strain path conditions to capture the impact of foil thickness on the mechanical response and microstructure evolution.

Depth-sensing indentation at ultramicroscopic and macroscopic contacts (“nanoindentation” and “macroindentation,” respectively) was performed on four brittle materials (soda-lime glass, alumina titanium carbide, sapphire, and silicon) and the resulting load–displacement traces examined to provide insight to the elastic and plastic deformation scaling with contact size. The load–displacement traces are examined in terms of the unloading stiffness, the energies deposited during loading and recovered on unloading, and the effect of the indenter tip radius on the loading curve. In the modern world, there's a notable trend towards the active miniaturization of electronic devices. With technological advances enabling the manipulation of nanostructures, there's an increasing focus on exploring quantum effects pivotal to such designs. One distinguishing feature of nanostructures is the quantum nature of the electron's energy spectrum. This spectrum becomes discrete in directions where electrons move. Depending on the direction of this confinement, structures can be categorized as nanoplates, quantum wires, or quantum dots. The properties of such structures can significan

The effect of sub-grain on the yield stress of pure copper single crystals with the [253] orientation was investigated by using the etch pit technique. The single crystal plates were successfully prepared from the seed crystals, which were produced at the melting temperature of 1473 K by the Bridgeman method. The present investigation confirmed the Hall-Petch relation concerning the effect of sub-grain boundaries on the macroscopic yielding of pure copper. The result derived from the extrapolation of the relationship of critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) and the initial dislocation density

AbstractOver the past two decades, the indentation size effect (ISE) has been studied extensively by several authors. A common point among all these studies has been the premise that during the indentation process sufficient plastic deformation is developed so that a gradient plasticity framework can be employed in order to capture this effect. However, recent studies have shown that a more detailed analysis of the deformation mechanism during nanoindentation reveals often situations that vary significantly from commonly held beliefs, i.e., configurations where plastic deformation is almost ab
