Abstract:

In the Elasmopus group of maerid amphipods, seven species of Elasmopus, six species of Mallacoota and two species of Parelasmopus are reported from the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia. Five of the 15 species, Elasmopus slatyeri, Elasmopus varanocephalensis, Mallacoota capricornia, Mallacoota scopulosa and Parelasmopus cymatilis are new to science. The Maeridae is diagnosed against all amphipod families and additional genera are assigned to the family.

The New Zealand species of the amphipod crustacean genus Mallacoota are revised. Previous records of Mallacoota subcarinata (Haswell, 1879) from New Zealand are based on a new species, Mallacoota chiltoni sp. nov. and M. petriei (Thomson, 1882), which is re-established as valid based on a neotype. Mallocoota chiltoni apparently has a southern distribution in New Zealand, occurring only south of the Subtropical Convergence, whereas M. petriei ranges widely in both the north and south islands. A history of the genus Mallacoota in New Zealand is given.

The new species is distinguished from its congeners by long slender setae on the posterior margin of the male gnathopod 2 propodus, a well-developed mid-palmar process on the male gnathopod 2 propodus, and a smooth posterior margin on the basis of pereopods 5–7. Additionally, the nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I was determined from the holotype. A key to the species of Elasmopus found in Japan is provided.

This species is unique in having: (1) male gnathopod 2 propodus palm ornamented, palmar corner defined by a soft spine; (2) spines along the entire posterior margin of epimeral plate 3, (3) telson with very long apical setae. This new species is the second species of this genus in Brazil. An updated taxonomic key to the Ceradocus of the world is also provided.

A new species of the amphipod genus Quadrivisio Stebbing, 1907, Quadrivisio chilikensis sp. nov. was collected from the Chilika Lagoon, east coast of India. The species was collected from seaweed Chaetomorpha sp.. The new species can be distinguished from other described species of the genus by the presence of a carina on pleonites and urosome, by the flagellum of antenna 2 being twice the length of peduncle article 5 and by pereopods 6 and 7 being equal in length.
