Abstract: This paper attempts to reconstruct from the limited evidence available the rationale and development of Thomas Twyne's completion (1573–84) of Thomas Phaer's unfinished English translation of the Aeneid (1555–60). In Phaer's hands, it is suggested, ‘continuation’ and ‘completion’ gradually turn over time into ‘competition’, ‘absorption’, and even ‘appropriation’. A key element in this process is Phaer's decision to add to the twelve books of Virgil's epic his translation of Maffeo Vegio's Latin Supplementum (1428): Twyne brings a similar kind of closure to Phaer's project to that inv

The paper deals with the historical reconstruction of the relation between the Austrian economist Emil Sax and the Italian economists of his generation. It is focused on three episodes. The first concerns the introduction of marginal analysis in public finance, seeing the works of Maffeo Pantaleoni (1883) and Sax (1887) as of primary significance. The second is about the reception accorded to the 1887 Sax's work in Italy by Giuseppe Ricca-Salerno (1887), and by Augusto Graziani (1887). The third relates to the development of a pure theory of public finance, and concerns the works of Sax (1887)

AbstractMost of the key episodes in book 1 of Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene (1590) replay famous passages in Virgil's Aeneid. However, the concluding canto, describing the Redcrosse knight's betrothal to Una, is based on Maffeo Vegio's fifteenth-century Supplementum to the Aeneid, while, surprisingly, the Aeneid's much-disputed ending appears in triplicate in early sections of book 1. This article examines the place and function of book 1’s three imitations of the Aeneid's ending, while also relating them to Spenser's appropriations of the ending in later books of The Faerie Queene. AbstractThe preparation of the critical edition of Verdi's I due Foscari has drawn attention to two overlooked sources: an early scenario attributed to Andrea Maffei and an early manuscript copy with various layers of corrections. This article questions the scenario's attribution to Maffei, revising the opera's early history. It furthermore identifies one of the layers in the manuscript copy as being in Verdi's hand, showing that the composer's role in fine-tuning a libretto at this early stage in his career was greater than has so far been possible to show.
