Abstract:
The Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is mainly composed of sedimentary rocks deposited since early Mesozoic times. Magmatic rocks are scarce. They are represented only by a few locally restricted occurrences of dykes and sills of mafic composition presumably emplaced in the Cretaceous and of volcanic rocks of Neogene age. This work is focused on the study of the Cretaceous magmatism with the intention to understand the processes causing the genesis of these rocks and their significance in the regional tectonic setting of the Northern Andes. The magmatic rocks cut the Cretaceous sedimentary succe

Major, trace and rare earth elements (REE), along with Nd isotopes and U-Pb ages, were determined for Archean greenstone belts (2.88-2.72 Ga) and Paleoproterozoic mafic dyke swarms (2.51-2.00 Ga) of the Northeastern Superior Province (NESP) of Canada in order to gain insights on the nature of mafic magmas across the Precambrian. Geographically separate, but coeval (2.78 Ga), greenstone assemblages with distinctive Fe-tholeiites occur across a large surface area of the NESP. This geographic separation, along with the numerous inheritance ages of greenstone lithologies that rep

Field evidence from exposed plutonic rocks indicates that mafic-felsic magma interaction is an important process during the construction and evolution of magma chambers. The exhumed, ~140 Ma, Halfmoon Pluton of Stewart Island, New Zealand is characterized by a sequence of mingled mafic sheets and enclaves preserved within an intermediate-felsic host, and provides a unique opportunity to directly investigate the physico-chemical processes that operate within an arc setting. Interpretation of mingling structures and textures in the field, in combination with extensive petrographic, geochemical a

Abstract:
Voluminous Eocene to Oligocene intermediate to silicic volcanic rocks related to subduction erupted throughout the Great Basin and were supplanted by bimodal eruptions of basalt and rhyolite related to extension in the Miocene. Locally, in the northern East Tintic Mountains of central Utah, this important transition is marked by a distinctive package of mafic alkaline magmas that reveal important details about the nature of this fundamental change.
