Abstract:
The paper presents the structural evidence for the existence of DP in the article-less language, Magahi. Article-less languages can be divided into two types: class languages and non-class languages. Most of the debate surrounding the treatment of article-less languages as DP/NP languages see only the binary distinction (article and non-article languages). In this paper, it is argued that the class-languages present richer structural evidences for the presence of the functional projection above NP. Along with presenting few structural evidences against the generalization presented by Bošković (2005), language-independent motivation for the functional projection like DP is also discussed. It is also argued that merit of the projection of the DP is also semantically justified. The argument that there can be various functional projections in the extended projection of NP weakens the strongest claim that article-less languages lack DP.

Abstract:
The paper proposes that Magahi, a modern Indo-Aryan language, presents the phenomenon of multiple determiners in the syntax of modification and argues that the phenomenon is not a simple case of agreement in definiteness in the noun phrase whereby the additional determiner carries a similar semantic feature. I present examples that contest the possibility of it as a case of concord or agree. For the semantic motivation of the phenomenon, following Plank (2003) & Kumar (2020), the paper claims that the definite determiner /-wa/ in Magahi is not an exclusively dedicated definiteness morpheme, and therefore, the language needs an additional linguistic element. I claim that the additional determiner weakens the definiteness of the definite determiner /-wa/, creating a projection problem in the overall referentiality of the NP. By further describing the individual semantics of the determiner on the noun and the adjective, the paper claims that the determiner on the adjective exudes the semantics of specificity that can co-occur with the numeral. However, the determiner on the noun has the semantics of familiarity or identifiability. The paper further provides an exhaustive account of semantic and structural description and motivation of the phenomenon.

Abstract:
Corpus preparation for low-resource languages and for development of human language technology to analyze or computationally process them is a laborious task, primarily due to the unavailability of expert linguists who are native speakers of these languages and also due to the time and resources required. Bhojpuri, Magahi, and Maithili, languages of the Purvanchal region of India (in the north-eastern parts), are low-resource languages belonging to the Indo-Aryan (or Indic) family. They are closely related to Hindi, which is a relatively high-resource language, which is why we compare them with Hindi. We collected corpora for these three languages from various sources and cleaned them to the extent possible, without changing the data in them. The text belongs to different domains and genres. We calculated some basic statistical measures for these corpora at character, word, syllable, and morpheme levels. These corpora were also annotated with parts-of-speech (POS) and chunk tags. The basic statistical measures were both absolute and relative and were expected to indicate linguistic properties, such as morphological, lexical, phonological, and syntactic complexities (or richness). The results were compared with a standard Hindi corpus. For most of the measures, we tried to match the corpus size across the languages to avoid the effect of corpus size, but in some cases it turned out that using the full corpus was better, even if sizes were very different. Although the results are not very clear, we tried to draw some conclusions about the languages and the corpora. For POS tagging and chunking, the BIS tagset was used to manually annotate the data. The POS-tagged data sizes are 16,067, 14,669, and 12,310 sentences, respectively, for Bhojpuri, Magahi, and Maithili. The sizes for chunking are 9,695 and 1,954 sentences for Bhojpuri and Maithili, respectively. The inter-annotator agreement for these annotations, using Cohen’s Kappa, was 0.92, 0.64, and 0.74, respectively, for the three languages. These (annotated) corpora have been used for developing preliminary automated tools, which include POS tagger, Chunker, and Language Identifier. We have also developed the Bilingual dictionary (Purvanchal languages to Hindi) and a Synset (that can be integrated later in the Indo-WordNet) as additional resources. The main contribution of the work is the creation of basic resources for facilitating further language processing research for these languages, providing some quantitative measures about them and their similarities among themselves and with Hindi. For similarities, we use a somewhat novel measure of language similarity based on an n-gram-based language identification algorithm. An additional contribution is providing baselines for three basic NLP applications (POS tagging, chunking, and language identification) for these closely related languages.

Nepal incorporates diversity of caste, ethnicity, language, social structure, culture and religion, among which Tharus are one of the indigenous groups of the Tarai and inner Tarai region of the country. The study is dedicated to explore the practice and process of celebrating Maghi as Tharunew year. This study has been conducted by employing both exploratory and descriptive research design. The data of the present article are based on published articles and books and on interviews with the elders of the Dangaura Tharus, ritual performers and educated persons of the community. This study represents the distinct socio-cultural structure and ethnic practice of Dangaura Tharu. Indigenous festivals are significant in anthropological research. So it helps to add specific knowledge about Maghi, the indigenous festival of Tharu people. But the central aspect of the celebration of Maghi is in the verge of gradual change. Because those characters which are not suitable for today is going to be abolished and those that are suitable are carried on continuously. Some factors that are core components cannot be changed and it is continuous even though they do not bear any meaning but continue in the respect of their fore ancestors.

The Sumagadha-Avadāna (‘Avadāna of Sumagadha’) is often mentioned in Oriental studies, including works on the history of classical Mongolian literature examining writings of Indo-Tibetan origin. This text is included in both the Tibetan- and Mongolian-language canonical Kangyur (Kanjur) editions. Despite frequent references, the former has neither been translated into Russian, nor there are any descriptions of its structure and content. Goals. So, the article attempts to fill the gap and aims at considering the narrative about Sayin Magada through the analysis of The Legend of Sayin Magada (Mong. Sayin Magada-yin domuγ), the latter being integral to the canonical collection of Kanjur in Mongolian. The work explores the text, describes its genre characteristics, identifies its structure, reveals contents, and investigates data contained in the colophon. Materials. The study focuses on the text titled ‘Sayin Magada-yin domuγ-i ögülegči kemekü’ (‘[Sutra] Narrating the Legend of Sayin Magada’) from the Eldeb (‘Collection of Sutras’) section of the Mongolian Kanjur (vol. 91). Results. The textual and content analysis of works by Tibetologists, Mongolists, and Sinologists dealing with writings of the avadāna genre included in the canon makes it possible to reveal key characteristics of the genre, describe the structure of the Mongolian text, and outline its content.

En muchas ocasiones no se presta suficiente atención a la realidad de la traducción inversa en el mercado profesional de la traducción. A la luz de esta situación, nuestra investigación recoge datos sobre el mercado de la traducción inversa en general y de la traducción hacia el alemán en España en particular. Tras la recopilación de estos datos queda patente la necesidad de la asignatura de traducción inversa en los planes de estudio españoles. Además, como docentes universitarios, debemos ofrecer a nuestros discentes herramientas para poder enfrentarse a esta combinación sin temor ni ansiedad. Para ello proponemos una serie de ejercicios de activación que, en principio, se usan únicamente en clases de alemán para extranjeros, pero que, adaptados a las necesidades de los estudiantes de traducción, les permiten ser conscientes de sus debilidades y, de esta manera, corregir las lagunas gramaticales y estructurales que pudieran presentar. Nuestro objetivo es abrir una puerta a la didactización de la asignatura de traducción inversa, a la vez que dar seguridad y motivación a los discentes. Tras la puesta en práctica de estos ejercicios en dos asignaturas de traducción inversa en centros distintos, vemos resultados positivos que demuestran que estos ejercicios se vuelven básicos para la activación del alemán y de las estrategias de traducción en nuestros aprendientes

Las Ciencias Cognitivas experimentales muestran importantes progresos en cuanto al funcionamiento de los mecanismos de la adquisición de conocimiento y de la memoria. Esos avances deben ser considerados en la carrera de Traducción e Interpretación, ya que la profesión de traductor o intérprete no solo requiere una buena fluidez lingüística, sino también competencias cognitivas específicas muy desarrolladas. Así, numerosos estudios neuro y psicolingüísticos demuestran que las habilidades de la memoria de trabajo y del control ejecutivo interlingüístico, tan imprescindibles para la labor de traducción/interpretación que comprende el balanceo entre dos lenguas, son susceptibles a su entrenamiento mediante prácticas tempranas. Igualmente, existen progresos significativos en el conocimiento sobre otras competencias necesarias para esta labor, como pueden ser la fluidez conceptual, la competencia metafórica o la práctica de discurso en público, entre otras. El presente trabajo describe una experiencia de la didáctica del alemán para futuros traductores o intérpretes que integra los avances de las Ciencias Cognitivas experimentales. Se trata del entrenamiento de las competencias traductoras desde la fase inicial del aprendizaje del alemán, lo que convierte los estudios de Traducción e Interpretación en una experiencia empírica y corporeizada motivadora tanto para los alumnos como para los docentes.

Le vocable khetem étudié dans cette thèse est attesté en Égypte ancienne de la Première Période Intermédiaire à l’époque romaine. C’est cependant au Nouvel Empire que son utilisation est la plus fréquente. Dérivé de la racine khetem, « sceller », ce terme peut désigner à la fois « ce qui est scellé » et « ce qui scelle ». Il est appliqué à diverses réalités. Au Moyen Empire, khetem désigne ainsi un type de magasin. À partir du Nouvel Empire, plusieurs sens lui correspondent : il peut occasionnellement, dans des documents littéraires, désigner des portes de ville ou des enclos – un sens que l’on retrouve d’ailleurs aux périodes suivantes – ; mais le terme est surtout choisi pour désigner les postes-frontières du pays, ainsi que le centre administratif et poste de contrôle du village de Deir el-Médineh. Les postes-frontières khetemou, dont les plus connus sont ceux de Tjarou, Ouadjour, Tjékou et Senmout, marquent les frontières restreintes de l’Égypte, et contrôlent les entrées et sorties du territoire. Ils constituent également des villes-magasins, par lesquelles transitaient le tribut et assumaient peut-être même le rôle de postes de douane. L’analyse, fondée essentiellement sur les sources textuelles, prend également en considération les données archéologiques et géomorphologiques. Centrée autour des structures khetemou, cette étude nous a cependant amenée à aborder la thématique plus large de l’organisation de l’espace par le pouvoir égyptien. The word khetem which is the main object of this dissertation is attested in ancient Egypt from theFirst Intermediary Period to Roman times. It was nevertheless most used during the New Kingdom.Derived from the khetem-root, which means « to seal », this word could be used to depict both whatwas sealed and the device which assured the actual sealing. It testifies to various realities. In theMiddle Kingdom, khetem was a certain type of storerooms. From the New Kingdom on, severalmeanings can be found: occasionally, in literary documents, it was used for the gates of a city or forenclosures – the latter meaning is still found in more recent periods. Nevertheless, the word wasmostly used for the border-posts of the Egyptian State as well as the administrative hall and checkpoint of the village of Deir el-Medineh. As for the border-posts khetemou, the best known ones areTjaru, Wadj-wr, Tjeku and Senmut as they stand for the inner borders of Egypt, where in- and outcomerswere checked. These settlements are also warehouse-cities, through which went the tributefrom foreign countries and operated as customs. The methods of analysis used here are grounded inthe textual sources, along with the archeological and geomorphological data. Focused on thestructures called khetemou, this thesis also consider the wider problem of the organisation of space bythe Egyptian state. Des travaux sur la littérature gabonaise en général et le roman en particulier, suscitent de l’étonnement, des exclamations du fait de leur rareté. Notre travail de thèse a eu pour objet de réajuster certaines approches de l’esthétique romanesque gabonaise. Il a été question de conjurer la notion du retard souvent utilisée pour présenter l’écriture romanesque gabonaise. L’esthétique romanesque gabonaise admet une identité d’isolement. Les systèmes de son élaboration découlent principalement de cet aspect. Dire les modalités de l’élaboration romanesque dans la littérature gabonaise à travers les écritures de Peter Ndemby et de Chantal Magalie Mbazoo Kassa, c’est d’une part, préciser les questions d’influences de la prose gabonaise et configurer le rapport entre le texte et la société. Un procédé qui a permis de révéler une redéfinition de la notion de littérarité au Gabon selon les travaux de Fortunat Obiang Essono. D’autre part, parler des modalités du Roman gabonais, c’est décliner la spécificité littéraire autour de la littérarité mimétique, de la littérarité autistique et de l’exiguïté. De l’histoire littéraire de Lanson en passant par la sociocritique de Claude Duchet et de Pierre Zima, le texte romanesque gabonais a révélé des spécificités qui imposent des nouvelles approches, une nouvelle conception du phénomène littéraire romanesque au Gabon
Gabonese literary works in general and the novel in particular raise amazement because of their being scarce. The goal of our dissertation has been to improve some aesthetical approaches of the Gabonese novel. It has consisted in turning down the common description of the Gabonese novel as being behind. The aesthetics of the Gabonese novel reveals an identity of isolation. The systems of its setting up result mainly from this aspect. Revealing how the novel has been built up in the Gabonese literature through the writings of Peter Ndemby and Chantal Magalie Mbazoo Kassa means, on the one hand, developing issues of influences in the Gabonese prose and shaping the relationship between text and society. This process helps to uncover a better definition of literariness in Gabon according to the works of Fortunat Obiang Essono. On the other hand, in dealing with the modalities of the Gabonese novel, we have had to develop its literary peculiarity through its mimetic and autistic literariness, and its ‘exiguousness’. From the literary story of Lanson through the sociocriticism of Claude Duchet and Pierre Zima, the Gabonese novel has unveiled peculiarities requiring new approaches, a new conception of literariness in the Gabonese novel

Aborder le roman féminin sous l‟angle d‟un énoncé discursif nécessite raisonnablement que l‟on prenne en compte, le contexte social, culturel et linguistique de production, les stratégies d‟énonciation, le champ de signification et les instances réceptrices qui déterminent ce discours. L‟approche sociopragmatique nous autorise pour ce faire à cette lecture plurielle qui, selon nous, mène incontestablement à une lisibilité optimale des textes. D‟abord, en tant que communication, le roman féminin implique des techniques discursives basées sur un environnement culturel et linguistique qui influence incontestablement le fonctionnement des énoncés en ce qui concerne les activités de production. Ensuite, la particularité des discours que nous étudions c‟est leur langage multiforme fait de paroles, d‟actes à valeur énonciatives, et d‟autres types de manifestations communicatives. C‟est un langage allégorique par essence, fait de sous-entendus, de diverses tournures imagées et aussi de silences parlants qui permettent d‟exprimer sans vraiment dire. Cette mise en scène théâtralisée du discours confère à l‟expression romanesque féminine un statut artistique particulier où la langue s‟enrichit d‟" accessoires linguistiques " d‟origine ethnique, régionale ou nationale. Enfin, la réception elle-même est fonction d‟un ensemble d‟éléments nécessaires à sa réalisation à savoir un espace, un temps, une orientation de réception intentionnellement glissée par l‟auteur. Ces éléments mis ensemble correspondent à ce que Kleiber nomme la "mémoire discursive" de l‟énonciateur et les "savoirs partagés" entre l‟émetteur et le récepteur

Föreliggande avhandling syftar till att utveckla läsningen och tolkningen av inskrifterna på de i dagsläget 46 kända vikingatida runblecken. Målet är att ge en så tydlig bild som möjligt av inskriftsgenren vikingatida runbleck. I detta syfte har upprepade fältundersökningar av runblecken genomförts med stereomikroskop. På grundval av på så vis etablerade nya läsningar föreslås nya tolkningar till de mest problematiska ställena i de tidigare tolkade runblecksinskrifterna. Nya tolkningsförslag ges även för runblecksinskrifter som tidigare har ansetts vara olexikaliska. Utöver nya läsningar och tolkningar resulterar denna studie i en kartläggning av relationen mellan runblecksinskrifternas innehåll och form å den enda sidan och runbleckens fyndmiljöer och utseende å den andra.
The aim of this dissertation is to represent as clearly as possible the genre of Viking-Age runic plates by developing readings and interpretations of the inscriptions on the 46 metal plates with runes from the Viking Age known today. Several investigations of the runic plates have been conducted with a stereomicroscope for this purpose. On the basis of the new readings thus established, new interpretations have been proposed for the most problematic sections of previously interpreted inscriptions. New interpretations are also offered for inscriptions on runic plates which have previously been considered non-lexical. As well as providing new readings and interpretations, this study has resulted in clarification of the relationship between the form and content of the inscriptions on the runic plates on the one hand and on their find circumstances and appearance on the other.

Abstract:
This chapter analyses the problems associated with Buddhist Sanskrit vocabulary. The obvious reason for these problems is the well-known linguistic diversity that prevailed in the vast area of India in ancient times as it does today. The first to experience them were most likely the early Buddhist monks, when they propagated their faith and tried to make themselves understood beyond Magadha, the original home of Buddhism, and then in the course of time even beyond India. These problems were gradually exported from India, as Buddhists in Central Asia and finally in China started to struggle with strange Sanskrit — or even worse Gāndhārī — words in their attempt to translate new and alien concepts into Chinese and other languages.

Abstract This chapter deals with the little-known history of selected regions and ethnic groups: with the Tarai in the south and its Maithili culture and literature, the Sherpa and their significance for mountaineering, with the long inaccessible kingdom of Mustang, and with the Kiranti or Rai-Limbu groups. The role of language, stories, and religion in shaping group identities is considered. The chapter delineates how the identities of these and other groups and their relation with the central power groups in the Kathmandu Valley are important for the nation-building process of Nepal. The chapter also briefly describes what is known about the histories of the Magar, Tamang, Gurung, Thakali, and many more ethnic groups.

This chapter reports on a study designed to showcase Latinx bilingual children's linguistic and cultural resources for learning mathematics in an after-school mathematics club. Specifically, the authors examine the design of the activity system and social interactions therein through a translanguaging perspective in which students leverage their language and culture to engage in mathematical learning. The primary objective is to highlight some to the triumphs and struggles of bilingual children as they expand communicative practices and mathematical resources via interactions with bilingual facilitators and electronic communication with a math wizard, El Maga. In particular, the authors spotlight how the involvement of multilingual parents' collaboration allowed children to draw on under-utilized forms of funds of knowledge.

A kutatás célja egy olyan tanulást segítő alkalmazás megvalósítása, amely segítségével a magyar diákok számára könnyebbé tehető az olyan anyanyelvi alapok megértése, mint például, hogy miként épülnek fel a mondatok, milyen egységekből állnak össze és azok hogyan viszonyulnak egymáshoz. A száraz nyelvtani anyagok helyett önállóságot növelő, játékos és interaktív feladatokkal több diák is közelebb kerülhetne a magyar nyelvhez és annak mélyebb megértéséhez. Tapasztalat, hogy a tanulók számára a nyelvtan, mint tanóra, sokszor okoz nehézségeket a tanulás során. Bár az évek alatt átfogó anyagot kapnak ahhoz, hogy a nyelvtan mindennapi használata ne jelenthessen gondot, azonban sokan így sem tudják összeegyeztetni a tanultakat a gyakorlattal, hiába használják nap mint nap helyesen az anyanyelvüket. Elmondható, hogy messze elmarad az általában kedvelt tantárgyak mögött, holott mindennek az alapját az jelentené, ha egy ember a saját anyanyelvét jól ismerné és használná. Ezért fontos lenne elérni, hogy a gyerekek számára a nyelvtantanulás, korosztálytól függetlenül, ne csak teher legyen. Találják meg a nekik megfelelő nehézségű feladatokat, amelyeket élvezettel oldhatnak meg, megfelelő visszajelzést kapva arról, ha hibáztak és azt hogyan javíthatják. Ehhez társul egy olyan webes technológiákkal és nyelvészeti eszközökkel támogatott alkalmazás, ami rendelkezik a megfelelően felépített és letisztult felhasználói felülettel, ami kisebb gyerekek és szülők számára is érthető és könnyen használható. Az alkalmazás funkciói közé tartozik mind a törzsanyag elsajátítása, mind a helyesírás és a mondatok elemzése, ellenőrzése. A tananyag csakúgy, mint ahogy az iskolában, témakörökre bontott, amikben korosztály szerint megtalálhatók a feladatsorok és a hozzájuk artozó magyarázó részek. Így könnyebben feldolgozható, lépésről lépésre, gyakorlati példákon keresztül tanulható az elmélet. A feladatok sokszínűsége miatt a diákok figyelme fenntartható és különböző jutalmazási rendszereken keresztül a tanulás élvezetesebbé válhat. A szoftver hátterében pedig jól bevált, különféle nyelvi elemzők implementálásával maga a szoftver is részt vesz a mondatok elemzésében, a helyesírás ellenőrzésében az iskolákban tanított nyelvi szabályok alapján. A felhasználók pedig maguk is megadhatják az elemezni kívánt mondatot, vagy mondatokat. Mindezzel nemcsak a diákok, de a pedagógusok munkája is egyszerűbbé válhat, ugyanis azzal, hogy a diákok nemcsak az órán kaphatnak visszajelzést a tudásukról, ami a legtöbb iskolában heti egy-két alkalmat jelent, az önálló, otthoni tanulás is eredményessé válhat, a program így elősegíti az anyag helyes rögzülését is. ----- Hungarian grammar learning application for primary and high school students ----- The aim of this research is the development of an application that allows Hungarian students to learn the basics of the Hungarian grammar in an easier way, for instance the sentence structure, the different units that build up a sentence, and how they relate to one another. Instead of the plain grammar rules, this application motivates students for independence, helps students to get closer to the Hungarian language by friendly and interactive tasks, and allows them to gain a deeper understanding of the language itself. When it comes to grammar lessons many individuals have experienced difficulties in the learning process. Although they get a brief overview during the years, granting them the correct use of their language in the everyday life without complication, some still can’t manage to apply their studies in practise. It can be stated that it is far behind the popular subjects, despite the fact that it would be the basis of everything, that a person knows and uses their mother language in the correct way. This is one of the main reasons why we need to find a way, in which every individual regardless of their age finds learning grammar more than just a burden. They should be able to find the right tasks for their knowledge, which they can solve with joy, getting the right feedback, letting them know of their mistakes, and ways to correct those mistakes. Such a thing would be the application stated above, using web technologies and linguistic tools, including a properly structured and clean user interface, which would be easy to use and understand for both small children and adults as well. The application would function as a tool for learning the core material, besides accurate spelling, analysing sentences and inspecting them. The educational material would be themed just like in school, in which themes one can find tasks for particular age groups along with the explanation. With this approach the theory is more processable through practical examples. With the diversity of tasks the attention of students is more viable, and using some kind of a rewarding system the learning process becomes more enjoyable. The software would take part in analysing the sentences, supervising the spelling based on the language and grammar rules applied by schools, alongside with the well proven language analysts. The users would also be able to specify their own sentences when it comes to analysing. Thereby not just the learning process for students would become easier, but the performance for teachers and educators, considering that the students would not only receive feedback of their knowledge in school, which only happens one or two times a week, but also during their independent learning processes which they can manage outside of school, since the application supports the correct fixation of material.
