That period corresponds to the management of the first Sphan director, Rodrigo de Melo Franco de Andrade. Edited since 1937, the publication gathered a group of intellectuals that have built the field of heritage in Brazil, having as protagonist the Sphan itself. Therefore, the Revista do Patrimônio is taken as object and, simultaneously, as a fundamental source for this research, considering it as social a place for those intellectuals that have collaborated to the preservation of the heritage. In that manner, Rodrigo M. Este período de análise corresponde à gestão do primeiro diretor do órgão, Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade. Assim, Rodrigo M. Wheeler, Belinda. "EXPANSIVE MODERNISM: FEMALE EDITORS, LITTLE MAGAZINES, AND NEW BOOK HISTORIES." OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/411.

Abstract:
The resurgence of modern periodical studies has expanded our understanding of “littleqrdquo; magazines and the editors behind them, but many studies continue to be restricted to the 1920s, examine male editors, and focus on well–established literary journals, rather than the subversive magazines that expanded the reign of modernism in the years from 1910 to 1950. These studies, though fascinating, privilege a select few and leave many lost to the archive. The new theory of book history and those who evaluate the book as a material object that is designed to circulate among a range of publics provide powerful and useful frameworks for recognizing the significance of what had previously been considered mere data. This study focuses on several neglected female little magazine editors who, despite various obstacles, powerfully intervened in the modernism debates throughout the 1910s through to the late 1940s by shaping successful publications to invite public appreciation of values they espoused. Unlike canonical modernist figures such as Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot who championed an elite style of modernism that was usually inaccessible to most, Lola Ridge, Gwendolyn Bennett, Caresse Crosby, and Kay Boyle encouraged diversity and fostered heterogeneity by selecting and juxtaposing material by new writers and artists who moved easily around and over the borders separating high art and mass culture, who recovered marginalized voices from history, and who appealed for social justice. Further, their traditional and non–traditional roles while they served as editors show that in many cases being an editor meant more than just choosing works and arranging them. One chapter is devoted to Lola Ridge, the American literary editor of Broom (1922-1923). Ridge was a cosmopolitan modernist who welcomed a broad audience to Broom and invited readers to champion styles of writing and artwork that contained strong social commentary with American subjects, instead of copying European models that many argued were created for art's sake. Another chapter focuses on African American poet, graphic artist and literary columnist, Gwendolyn Bennett, who held several editorial roles at Opportunity, Fire!!, and Black Opals, from the mid–1920s until the early 1930s. A heterodox modernist, Bennett skillfully discussed and placed artistic work by members of the New Negro movement next to the work by their forefathers, subsequently fostering congeniality between the two conflicting literary groups and promoting a united front during the development of the Harlem Renaissance. She also promoted co–operation between black and white artists and writers with her universally themed poetry, graphic art, and literary column. Chapter four centers on Black Sun Press book publisher, novelist, and poet, Caresse Crosby, owner and editor of Portfolio (1945-1948), who challenged artistic reception on both sides of the Atlantic by bringing glamorous modernism to her unbound journal of eclectic work. Crosby promoted co–operation between artists and writers from conflicting World War II countries through the placement and types of materials she published on the pages of her magazine. The epilogue calls for scholars to expand their view of the modernist project and recover the often “hidden” work by overlooked female little magazine editors. Like Ridge, Bennett, and Crosby before her, Kay Boyle (This Quarter 1927-1929), who can be linked to each editor (directly or indirectly), relied on her trusted network of friends as she edited This Quarter. Her editorial support for young and experienced artists who used innovative styles and her commitment to social justice parallels her colleagues' dedication to the modernist project. These women's labor, the significant literary time periods they worked in, the different genres, critical content, and styles of modernism they championed, and the social formations their journals produced expanded the base of modernism and reinvigorated American art and literature between the Wars, leaving a legacy for future artists and writers.

Abstract:
This study incorporates archival and historical research on women poets and editors and their roles in the production of modernist and/or leftist little-magazine cultures in Canada. Where the first three chapters investigate women poets who were also magazine editors and/or members of magazine groups, the fourth chapter takes account of women magazine editors who were not themselves poets. Within this framework, the dissertation relates women's editorial work and poetry to a series of crises and transitions in Canada's leftist and modernist little-magazine cultures between 1926 and 1956. This historical pattern of crisis and transition pertains at once to the poetry of Dorothy Livesay, Anne Marriott, P. K. Page, and Miriam Waddington and to the little-magazine groups in which they and other women were active as editors and/or contributing members. Chapter 1 deals with Livesay's editorial activities and poetry in the context of two magazines of the cultural left, Masses and New Frontier, between 1932 and 1937. Chapter 2 concerns Livesay, Marriott, their involvement in poetry groups in Victoria and Vancouver, and their publications in Contemporary Verse and Canadian Poetry Magazine, between 1935 and 1956. Chapter 3 addresses the poetry of Page and Waddington published in Preview and First Statement from 1942 to 1945, their poetry appearing in Contemporary Verse from 1941 to 1952--53, and their editorial activities in and/or relationships to these Montreal and Victoria - Vancouver magazine groups between 1941 and 1956. Chapter 4 documents the histories of some often forgotten women who edited modernist or leftist little magazines in Canada between 1926 and 1956. These core chapters are prefaced and concluded by histories of the antecedents to and descendants of Canadian modernist and leftist magazine cultures.

Abstract:
Espera-se contribuir para o estudo do jornalismo de revistas no Brasil, em especial para o campo das revistas de cidade.<br>This monograph is a case study of Época São Paulo magazine, Editora Globo\'s monthly publication which circulated from May 2008 to December 2013, as a supplement of weekly Época magazine. The purpose is to investigate the mistakes and successes of the title, both editorial and commercial, in order to explore the formats adopted by city magazines and formulate practical recommendations for this genre of publications in the age of the tablets and smartphones. In this work, this researcher\'s unstructured direct observation, in a period before the official beginning of the research (the author of this thesis worked as a reporter for Época São Paulo from 2008 to 2010 and as its editor from 2010 to 2012, resigning one year before the end of the title) is combined with the indirect observation about the backstage magazine (through long interviews with the three editors in chief in charge of the newsroom in successive periods) and also the study of the published issues of Época São Paulo and the selected bibliography. Among the researched topics were magazine journalism, utilitarian journalism, local information in the scope of the global society, the challenges of the metropolis as a space of consumption as well as of rights, authorship and objectivity in the practice of journalism, influence of the circulation and periodicity in the construction of relevance, and the challenges of communication in the public cyberspace. It is expected to contribute to the study of magazine journalism in Brazil, especially in the area of the city magazines.

Abstract:
The credibility of giving accounts, attributed to Journalism, is claimed within the practices of the Field as an element that warrants a place of competence in face of contemporaneity central problems, such as the environmental issue. In magazine journalism, as an expert expression of the journalistic system, to explore thematic deployments of conflictual issues offering utilitarian words becomes productive from the editorial point of view. Institutional images and images of the magazine itself, operated within texts, intertwine market projects, special reports, Green Editions, Guides. The empirical base for this investigation is set in the reading of excerpts taken from feature stories and editorial texts from five of Editora Abril’s magazines, published in the years 2007 and 2008, and that under the label Movimento Planeta Sustentável (Sustainable Planet Movement) presented the environmental theme as a front-page headline. The apprehension is of a double emergence: of the theme in the magazine pages and of journalism in the theme. Publication wise, the willing to legitimate an intervallic mediation, with the effect of resolving ambivalences, is communicated. In the texts, the magazines activate a relation of places, their own, of readers, of other Social Fields, in such a way as to enunciate solutions. The study approaches an ecology of journalism based on concept-notions from Discourse Analysis and Journalism Theories, discussing the discursive inscription of Abril’s magazines concerning the green value to the constitution of a place of knowing to say, in tune with nowadays spirit.

Abstract:
Several studies have shown that women tend to use more personal pronouns and therefore show more involvement with the reader. This paper examines the differences between male and female editors’ letters in magazines. The study applied the method of corpus linguistics in order to examine forty editor’s letters twenty from the male-targeted magazine Gentlemen’s Quarterly and twenty from the female-targeted magazine Harper’s Bazaar. First person singular and second person singular pronouns were examined to determine whether the female editor showed more involvement with the reader than the male editor. The result shows that the male editor from the Gentlemen’s Quarterly shows more involvement with the reader than the female editor from Harper’s Bazaar, which clashes the findings of previous studies.

Abstract:
The contemporary Japanese manga industry began in 1959 when the first weekly manga magazines were published. Throughout the 1960s publishing companies attracted a large adult readership by incorporating radical political themes and realistic drawing styles in manga magazines. The readership continued to expand throughout the 1970s and 1980s and manga became a mass medium on a similar scale to television or pop-music. This thesis identifies two distinct trends in the cultural status of manga which were developing from the mid-1980s onwards. On the one hand, what had previously been seen as 'commercial' manga became respected as an 'art' form and highbrow communication medium. On the other, manga was vilified as pornography and as the extreme expression of an increasingly fragmented society. In the former trend, prestigious corporations sponsored a new category of 'information' manga, whilst in the latter, 'girls' and 'otaku' manga genres were censured by a quasi-governmental censorship movement. The amateur manga subculture in particular became the focus of a 'moral panic' where those involved were characterised as isolated and socially dysfunctional. This thesis, based on ten months' participant observation and intensive interviews in 'Morning' manga magazine editorial office in 1994, examines how this editorial was influenced by the changing status of manga in Japanese society in the formulation of its editorial policy and production methods. Editors felt that in the 1990s social changes presented the manga industry with serious production problems - in particular, a dearth of 'good' artists who could produce social themes, and a shrinking readership. Morning editorial attempted to overcome these problems by pioneering a new form of artistic, high-quality and respectable adult manga, aimed at older and more socially-elite readers. By creating a new proactive intellectual role for manga editors at the same time as sponsoring experimental graphic styles, Morning editorial produced a distinctive new form of conservative, state-supporting social and political adult manga. The re-definition of specific genres of manga as 'art' by Japanese institutions was paralleled by changes in commercial manga production which privileged the social and intellectual interests of editors over those of readers and artists. This study concludes that editors have become increasingly impo7tant in manga production between 1986 and 1995, and that there is a tight interrelationship between commercial cultural production and broader cultural and social discourses generally.

Abstract:
This study was designed to identify correlates of success in Supported Employment(SE) programs for persons with psychiatric disabilities. Indiana policy-makers are seriously considering a managed care, or "capitated," system of payment to make SE provider programs more efficient economically. However, many agencies are concerned about providing services to more severely impaired individuals because of the potentially higher costs of serving these individuals. Two studies are included in this project. The goals of the first study were to identify SE consumer (clinical) characteristics that predict (1) successful outcomes, defined as whether the consumer achieves gainful work, and (2) program costs, defined as the amounts of SE service hours utilized by consumers who obtain work. In two large samples of SE consumers with serious mental illness, no clinical characteristics (e.g., diagnosis, rated functioning, hospitalization history) were associated with vocational outcome or service costs. The goal of the second study was to describe the types and amounts of services utilized by SE consumers who obtain work. Specific service categories associated with obtaining work were travel, training, and advocacy that was unrelated to the consumer's job. The implications of these findings are discussed in the framework of the debate over clinical versus empirical prediction. The need for a theoretical model of SE services that allows the use of predictive clinical and consumer driven services is also discussed.<br>Department of Journalism

Palmer, Beth Lilian. "Strategies of sensation and the transformation of the Press, 1860-1880 : Mary Braddon, Florence Marryat and Ellen Wood, female author-editors, and the sensation phenomenon in mid-Victorian magazine publishing." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2008. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:30a509c7-2ba3-4477-9d3e-801f61e1b8c1.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the processes of writerly and editorial literary production undertaken by women sensation authors in the 1860s and 1870s. This focus represents a shift from the prevailing critical emphasis on the consumption of sensation fiction to the realm of production and therein allows the thesis to analyse the ways in which sensation operates as a set of rhetorical and linguistic strategies for women writers in the changing publishing conditions of mid-to-late Victorian society. I consider the ways in which sensation is an idiom that permeates all aspects of magazine publishing in this period and demonstrate how it could be adapted and become an empowering discourse for women writers and editors. Furthermore, this thesis sees sensation as an important component in the transformation of the press in the 1860s and 1870s. By analysing the specific ways in which sensational strategies were appropriated and transformed, this thesis reassesses the role of sensation in the creation of women’s writing in the second half of the nineteenth century, and consider its legacies in later ‘New Woman’ writers. I achieve this by examining three women editors, who were part of the transformation of magazine publishing in the period. Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915), Ellen (Mrs. Henry) Wood (1814-1887), and Florence Marryat (1837-1899) all operated as writers and editors in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. They produced varying types of sensational fiction that they serialised in their own monthly magazines, Belgravia, Argosy, and London Society respectively. Sensation provided a dynamic and flexible means for these women author-editors to assert their status in the context of the expansion of the press in the 1860s and 1870s. I argue that their work invites a more fluid and generous critical definition of sensation.

Thus this work takes as the principle corpus of analysis the periods 1997-1998 and 2011-2012. Emphasizing the analysis of the magazine s editorials, covers and advertisements, this work investigates the effects of meaning that these texts produce based on its discoursive construction. For the description and analysis of the verbal-visual texts, it refers to the French semiotic and its model of analysis of the signification proposed by A. J. Greimas, together with the visual semiotic, with the contributions of J. M. Floch. Its objectives are to design a landscape about the emergence of the magazines and their similarity to the newspaper; to localize the emergence of the Brazilian pedagogic publications; to investigate the emergence and consolidation of the Editora Abril as an expressive communication company; to examine the creation of the Victor Civita Foundation and, lastly, to investigate the teacher simulacrum reiterated and strengthened by the discourse of Nova Escola (New School). The analysis points to the reinforcement of a simulacrum that sees education, specially the first two years, as vocation and mission, stressing the instrumental dimension at the expense of the conceptual. The gender questions are also important; above all by the fact of the woman-teacher simulacrum be continuously reiterated in the discourse of the refered media. In terms of discoursive procedures, the play between objectivity and subjectivity, reinforces the scientific discourse as well as the relation of approximation that the magazine establishes with its readers. Thus, this work verifies the absence of any lexeme that treats the associative and sindical questions related to the teaching profession. The reiteration of the red, in what refers to the visual aspects, and the passionate feature of the texts highlights the verbal-visual discourse of Nova Escola, intrinsically connected to the reinforcement of the love-dedication-education relation<br>Este trabalho examina a construção do discurso pedagógico na revista Nova Escola, os procedimentos discursivos utilizados nessa construção, e o quadro de valores no qual esses discursos se inserem.

The analysis consists of a comparison between the text published in the magazine A Estação between October 1881 and March 1882, and the one published in the book Papéis Avulsos, in November 1882. Accordingly, alterations made by the author as he transferred the text from pamphlet to book form are recorded and the passages involved are subsequently commented. Subsequently, by examining the style of the story and the idiosyncrasies of its narrator and, above all, the concept of science as it is outlined, the analysis attempts to show that 1) the story fits into the category of works that illustrate the relationship between real facts and imagined facts, as defined by Antônio Candido in his essay Esquema de Machado de Assis; 2) that the concept of science at the time, of which Bacamarte is the incarnation, and especially scientific observation and enunciation with objective pretensions, are targets of criticism by Machado de Assis through verbal strategies employed by the narrator, which transmit the idea of an elusive reality, or, as Anatol Rosenfeld called it, an unexplained world, an aesthetic effect that in my opinion constitutes the crux of some of Assiss later works, such as Missa do Galo or Dom Casmurro; 3) that the narrative focus of O Alienista is its style, characterized by ambiguities and by a continual affirmation and denial of facts, materializing the continuous movement, always beyond the observation of Bacamarte, or the evolution of his own theories about madness and normality that makes the concept of observation the conducting motive of the work, and which makes this a short story rather than a novella; 4) that, curiously, the work presents conceptual nexuses with the so-called relativist sciences at the turn of the 19th Century, among them, especially, The Philosophy of As if, developed by the German thinker Hans Vaihinger, regardless of whether Machado de Assis had had contact with these sciences or not; and 5) for this reason the short story can be considered the pioneer of a huge body of work that followed it, characterized by having science as its central theme.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to compare the contents, editorials and front covers of Sweden’s oldest girl’s magazine Veckorevyn during two different years, in which the magazine had two very different chief editors. In the year 2000, Emma Hamberg got the job as editor-in-chief for Veckorevyn, with a vision of changing the way the magazine represented young females. She wanted to add a more feminist viewpoint to the magazine, since she felt that Veckorevyn didn’t live up to its claim of being “a girl’s best friend”. Six years later, the famous Swedish fashion editor Ebba von Sydow became editor-in-chief for Veckorevyn, with the intention of making the magazine better, smarter and more fun for young girls. Her ambition was also to add more features about career and affordable fashion, since she felt that those topics were important for young women of today. Since these two editor-in-chiefs wanted to do so different things with Veckorevyn, we found it interesting to try to pinpoint what their differences and similarities as editors-in-chief were and how this was reflected in the magazines. The methods used were quantitative content analysis and qualitative text analysis, together with a comparative analysis between the two annual volumes. We also did interviews with the two former editors-in-chiefs, Emma Hamberg and Ebba von Sydow to get a clearer image of what they wanted to do with the magazine and how well they thought that they reached their goals. As guidelines for the study, we used theories about the survival techniques used by female journalists, feminism, personification, the male gaze and the female gaze. We found that the two versions of Veckorevyn were similar in which subjects they chose to write about. Both versions had a content based mostly on fashion, beauty, and celebrities. However, we found a noticeable difference in how they wrote about these subjects. Other differences were found in how the editorials were written, and in the choice of what kind of people got to appear on the front covers.

Abstract:
碩士<br>南華大學<br>出版學研究所<br>91<br>This research is employed and weighted in the methods of paper investigation, documentation, and deep interview to analyze the role of thirty editors currently working in six travel magazines on general sale in Taiwan. The main purpose is to understand the role and importance of editors in travel magazines through actual investigation. Simultaneously, the result of the research can provide the publishing circles more knowledge in interviewing and editing of travel magazines. This research is from population background, career pattern, magazine organization, and outer environment aspects to be the basic background data to see observations and influences of the role of editors in travel magazines. Role performance, role expectation, and role location are the three parts to be used to explore the role of career. Statistic of paper investigation is based on descriptive statistics. Through paper investigation, documentation, and deep interview, there are several findings of the research in the following: 1.Population background: Most editors in Taiwan’s travel magazine are un-marriage females majoring in mass media or relative majors in the university. Average age is 32-33. Most were born in Taipei without religions. In addition, most of their parents were graduated from junior or senior high schools. The influence of parents’ position on them is slight. 2.Career pattern: The first position for most editors in travel magazines after graduating from schools is to work for a magazine house. In a career transition, they don’t have much experience and spend less time on other fields. Also, most of them are engaged in their own professions before current jobs. Magazines houses of sightseeing, tour, finance, economics, industry and business are most popular jobs they used to work for. The standard of promotion in a magazine house is usually like this: an editor-a senior editor and an executive-a chief editor or a continuous senior editor-a vice general editor or a general editor. Work experience, competence, and recommendation are three main elements of promotion. Put it to another way, the system of a magazine house and the characteristic of editing are two special important reasons to cause a promotion of a magazine house. 3.Role performance, role expectation, and role location: In each variable, personal experiences, executive’s opinions, and the trend of popular fashions have most influences on role performance. Besides, editors’ best friends are related to publishing, mass media, or culture and education government work. They keep close relationship with coworkers. Also, most editors of travel magazines often collect popular information related to travel. The most finding of role expectation is that the influence and evaluation of editing on a society population are from mass media and actually the convincement of editing is limited. In addition, although editors of travel magazines and reporters of travel line are in charge of different task, they have the same nature work. According to the result and limitation of the research, there are several related suggestions in the future study and profession.Future researchers can seek other type of magazines, other editors, and non-profit travel magazine organizations. Besides that, they can build a professional model, tabulation, and use a “single-case inquisition” to search a related theme. Lastly, the profession should be award of pre-career training and sharing resources.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中正大學<br>教育學研究所<br>101<br>This study aims to explore the educational discourse of business magazine, and chose 17 education special editions of CommonWealth Magazine between 1996-2012 as the examples of this research. The concept and method of Fairclough’s three layers of critical discourse analysis—discourse as text, discourse as discursive practice, and discourse as social practice-is employed. The main findings are summarized as follows: 1. It explores a wide range of educational issues in relation to ‘competitiveness’ which becomes the mainstream discourse. 2. It conceals the vocational values by allocating different discourses in the text. 3. It was influenced by social atmospheres but strengthens the social mainstream values of pursuing competitiveness and economic benefit. Some implications are generated from the study of business magazine’s educational discourse: 1.For official, they need to think where is the long-term vision for education. 2.For educator, they have to reflect their educational profession and position. 3.For individual, they should critically reflect business magazine’s educational discourse.

Abstract:
碩士<br>南華大學<br>教育社會學研究所<br>92<br>With the development of Taiwanese women’s magazines, the competition of its market has been getting keenly. Therefore, if women’s magazines would like to survive, they should rely on the support of readers and the income of advertisement. It makes women’s magazines play an equivocal role—the expert system of consumption and infinite seduction. In addition, “fashion” has become the main topic of women’s magazines to attract more readers’ attention; it reflects today’s social aura—the fashion upsurge. However, how many people could truly realize the meaning of fashion while reading women’s magazines, whose property is full of ambiguity? This research is conducted under the theories of Baudrillard, Giddens, Simmel and Hall, and thereby to frame, analyze the research questions as followed. (1) How are women’s magazines edited by the elements of expert and advertisement? (2) What is the meaning of fashion and how is fashion being edited in women’s magazines? (3) To Decode and conclude the meaning of fashion edition in women’s magazines. The method used in the research is textual analysis and the strategy used here is symptomatic reading. Samples chosen in the research are three kinds of different magazines, including the local style magazine—儂儂, Europe style magazine—Vogue, Japanese style magazine—東京衣芙e''f. The results of research are as below: (1) Fashion content consists of elaborate visualized pictures, dialogue tone and fuzzy glossaries (2) The advertisement and expert system elements are co-existed in fashion text—it’s not only for seducing consumption, but also being a guide book for entering the superior class. (3) The fashion editions of women’s magazines are almost manipulated by superior class. (4) If the content of women’s fashion magazine matches the readers’ needs which are pre-supposed by editors, then we may anticipate some disguised form of power struggle conducted by some specific readers for elite positions.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北科技大學<br>創新設計研究所<br>98<br>For most people, Interior design magazine is one of the main resources for collecting information related to housing and decoration. However, as the advertisement revenue is the main part for the magazine media industry, a number of advertisements occupied most of pages. It more or less affects the content editing and ratio of the articles and advertisements. As a result, it is questioned that whether the content of the interior design magazine really fulfills the magazine readers’ need. The aim of this study was to discuss the differences between the content and the market needs of the interior design magazine. In conducting this study, two resources of data were used: Primary data, collected from using questionnaire to collect the readers’ comment and view on the interior design magazine in the market, and Secondary data, collected largely from literature review including library material and material from the internet related to the media and the magazine of interior design and decoration. In analyzing the information, the content analysis method is adopted to induct the trend of magazine content editing of the interior design magazine in the market. To conclude this study: first of all, the professional information provided by the interior design magazine sold in the market was insufficient and did not reach readers’ need. Secondly, the reporting of the professional information only focused on the style and the related application and it did not really help the readers for collecting information. Furthermore, over-abound advertisement might disgust readers and therefore ruin the effect of the advertisement.

In the development of digital publishing, there are still many issues to overcome besides the cover, contents and marketing, but how to create the desired content for the reader’s lifestyle and reading habits to extend the brand influence. Furthermore, creating a social network for the magazine in order to create more opportunities and enhance the diversity of the business model, such as brand interaction through integrated marketing. Every issue of Revolution selects one or some articles from the international edition. This study aims at examining the translated articles of Taiwan’s Revolution to find out the influence of magazine editors’ translation strategies. With the popularity of mechanical watches in the Taiwan market, more and more watch magazines have been published to introduce mechanical watches. However, different watch magazine publishers adopt different translation strategies in translating English articles into Chinese. Some publishers even make errors in translating watch terms. The Revolution magazine has had five chief editors since it was founded in 2008. The study found that the five chief editors adopted different translation strategies in dealing with Chinese translation. In other words, the Chinese articles of the Revolution are different due to different demands of the chief editors. Based on Skopos Theory, the main research directions of the study are as follows: First, this study aims at examining the translation methods of the five chief editors in translating proper nouns such as device nouns, watch brands, and names of people and places; Second, this study aims at analyzing the reasons and purposes of the five chief editors’ translation strategies such as adding, omitting, or rewriting from the original. The study found that the five chief editors didn’t check out the real Chinese proper nouns, hence they made some errors in editing. Besides, the five chief editors used different methods in dealing with the translation of watch brands and names of wristwatches, people and places; some translated them into Chinese while other didn’t. Furthermore, they adopted inappropriate translation strategies causing ambiguities. The study offers solutions to the problems indicated above and gives some suggestions to Taiwan’s watch magazines on how to translate English articles into Chinese.

Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)<br>Although many of Lola Ridge's poems champion the causes of minorities and the disenfranchised, it is too easy to state that politics were the sole reason for her neglect. A simple look at well-known female poets who often wrote about social or political issues during Ridge's lifetime, such as Edna St. Vincent Millay and Muriel Rukeyser, weakens such a claim. Furthermore, Ridge's five books of poetry illustrate that many of her poems focused on themes beyond the political or social. The decisions by critics to focus on selections of Ridge's poems that do not display her ability to employ multiple aesthetics in her poetry have caused them to present her work one-dimensionally. Likewise, politically motivated critics often overlook aesthetic experiments that poets like Ridge employ in their poetry. Few poets during Ridge's time made use of such drastically varied styles, and because her work resists easy categorization (as either traditional or avant-garde), her poetry has largely gone unnoticed by modern scholars. Chapter two of my thesis focuses on a selection Ridge's social and political poems and highlights how Ridge's social poetry coupled with the multiple aesthetics she employed has played a part in her critical neglect. My findings will open up the discussion of Ridge's poetry and situate her work both politically and aesthetically, something no critic has yet attempted. Chapter three examines Ridge’s role as editor of Modern School, Others and Broom. Ridge's work for these magazines, particularly Others and Broom, places her at the center of American modernism. My examination of Ridge's social poetry and her role as editor for two leading literary magazines, in conjunction with her use of multiple aesthetics, will build a strong case for why her work deserves to be recovered.
