Gouws, Cliff. "Magazine Hill : a weathered continuum." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29983.

Full text
Abstract:
NDLTD Innovative ETD Award 2012. This dissertation is rooted within a process of unification, a personal struggle to understand the fragile relationship that exists between architecture and time. The project focuses on architecture’s potential to adapt according to the passage of time, through the process of aging and weathering. This study is founded in the aim to re-establish a connection between the continuum of time and architecture. The project places contemporary commemorative architecture under the limelight, criticising the static notion of heritage commemoration through the typologies of museums and memorials. These typologies often evolve into static monuments, where the relevance to contemporary society can be questioned. The architectural response of this dissertation is thus focused on commemoration through everyday use. The proposed historical site (Magazine Hill) forms a comprehensive construct of different layers of time and influence. This mysterious, abandoned and isolated site consists of two ammunition magazines, five bomb shelters and ammunition factories, all structures that represent an era of unrest in South Africa. In 1945 a mysterious explosion of the Central Magazine scarred the face of Magazine Hill, leading the activities on the site to an early death, trapping architecture in time and abandonment. The proposed programme forms part of the conceptual premise of mediation, unifying different opposites inherent in both Magazine Hill and the South African context. A brass foundry is proposed to recycle the spent ammunition shells of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), thereby introducing brass artists as a public interface to Magazine Hill. Where ammunition was once produced, ammunition is now reduced. This programme could form mediation between the public and the military; exposing different layers of the past by reinstating a connection between architecture and time. Bratton, Francesca Amelia. "Hart Crane and the little magazine." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11996/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Hart Crane’s oeuvre through a detailed appraisal of his publishing history in little magazines. The main contention of this thesis is that Crane’s relationships with his periodical publishers shaped his poetic development, and that new light is shed on these works through their recontextualisation in their original periodical contexts. This raises a secondary question: how does Crane’s publication in journals and his relationships with editors affect the reception of his poetry, and can patterns established in his immediate reception be found in later criticism. This study takes a new approach in its methodology, both in relation to existing studies of Crane, and as a way of dealing with a writer’s body of work. By examining, as D. F. McKenzie has put it, ‘the sociology of texts’ and their ‘processes of transmission, including production and reception’, forgotten contexts of Crane’s poetry are able to emerge. As well as uncovering new works by Crane, an examination of Crane’s periodical networks highlights the influence of particular strands of Modernism on his development, such as ‘post-Decadent’ forms advanced in Greenwich Village journals, the American Futurist experiments active in American magazines based in Europe, and the proto-Surrealist experiments with metaphor that inform Crane’s own associative aesthetic. This study also traces the interconnections between poetic form and publishing. Crane’s long poems, 'The Bridge', ‘For the Marriage of Faustus and Helen’ and the ‘Voyages’, were all published in fragments in a number of different journals, and these publishing formats are found to be aesthetically significant for these texts, and articulate Crane’s wider interest in fragment and collage forms.

Beard, Alice. "Nova magazine 1965-1975 : a history." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2015. http://research.gold.ac.uk/12286/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an original case history of Nova magazine from 1965-1975, and analyses the magazine’s construction, content and consumption through material culture. Nova made a distinct offering to the world of women’s magazines in the Sixties and Seventies and can be defined by its unique synthesis of editorial breadth and visual innovation. The study considers the correlation between a magazine’s intended, implied and realised meanings. In my analysis of Nova, intended meanings are revealed through an examination of the production process; implied meaning is found within the magazine as an object and text; and Nova’s realised meanings are those articulated through oral history by its readers. Interviews with staff cover the four key areas of Nova’s production; Caroline Baker, Fashion Editor 1967-1975; Gillian Cooke, Editor 1970-1975; David Hillman, Art Director 1969-1975; Maggy Meade-King, Features Writer, 1970-1975. Analysis of these interviews and the design and content of Nova reveals the motivation and ambitions of individual production staff, and evaluates the crucial collaborative practice, creative conflicts and networks of production at the heart of Nova’s making. To better understand magazines, their histories and their futures, it is time that these individuals, working practices and creative networks are both acknowledged and critically evaluated. Recognising the nature and importance of the magazine as composite I adopt a holistic approach as a methodological model for Nova’s analysis. In this thesis I examine the magazine as a whole entity; I analyse its design and contents, alongside a narrative of the processes of its production from its staff and contributors, and consider the use and value of the magazine by its contemporary readers. The agenda for this work, is to plot the processes of production and consumption of Nova in order to reveal the various elements and practices that construct the identity and history of the magazine as a visual, textual and material object.

It is claimed that metaphors are not only a rhetorical flourish of literature texts but actually pervasive even in the most trivial details of our lives. Lakoff and Johnson explain that investigating metaphors may be a way of unveiling how our conceptual system is structured and consequently what we perceive, the way we behave in the world and the way we relate to other people. These assumptions motivated the emergence of a great number of studies regarding metaphors directly or indirectly. Among these studies is the one conducted by Boers (1997) which aimed at shedding some light on how different clusters of metaphors may influence the comprehension and decision making of readers. Boers's study was replicated in the present one, which offers a cognitive semantic analysis of "Health", "Fitness", "Race", "Fight" and "Warfare" metaphors as instantiated in magazine business discourse, and argues that the use of these metaphors may reflect and consolidate certain thought patterns about general business processes. This cognitive semantic analysis was put to test in a problem-solving experiment with university students and revealed that exposure to particular metaphors to describe an business scenario may affect participants' decision-making processes in accordance with the cognitive semantic expectations. The objectives of this study were to: (1) identify what metaphors are more frequently used in magazine texts about business in Brazilian Portuguese and (2) to carry a problem-solving experiment to assess the potential cognitive impact of the metaphors under investigation. The research question that this study intended to answer was: How do different clusters of metaphors influence the comprehension and decision making of EFL readers? The findings of this research tried to show how metaphors may influence our way of thinking and perceiving the world according to our reactions to these metaphors and therefore shaping reality. Explaining this to EFL learners and showing them how it works may help them become aware of this fact and become able to identify and reproduce legitimate metaphorical meanings. Furthermore, learners' awareness may identify underlying ideologies and multiplicity of meanings of metaphorical language in texts. Therefore, this should provide the tools they need to interpret and produce information according to their own beliefs, allowing readers in general to reach their own conclusions about what they read, thus enhancing autonomous literacy.

Wang, Kaidi. "The impact of advertisements: how female magazine readers in China perceive fashion magazine advertisements and white skin." Thesis, Kansas State University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/38273.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Science<br>Department of Journalism and Mass Communications<br>Xiaochen A. Zhang<br>Most of the models in Chinese fashion magazine advertisements are Caucasian women today. White skin, as one of their Caucasian characteristics, is particularly emphasized. Millions of Chinese women are bombarded with the advertising’s message of “having white skin is beautiful” every day. My research suggests that this kind of adverting depicts white skin as a beauty ideal; the prevalence of Caucasian models in whitening products’ magazine advertisements constructs body-esteem, self-esteem, and purchase decision-making of Chinese women. The Social Judgment Theory is employed in this research as a theoretical framework. It is a way to explain when persuasive messages are most likely to succeed and how people make judgments about them. Understanding this phenomenon will ultimately provide insight into addressing the effects of the promotion of fashion magazine advertisements on Chinese women. It is further anticipated that future researchers will expand and improve the knowledge of the Chinese advertising market.

Denbok, Patricia. "Female Tourists, Magazine Advertisements and Travel Preferences." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/2911.

Full text
Abstract:
I set out to determine how the contemporary Western female traveler is constructed in popular travel media, and how resonant such images were with female travel consumers themselves. Two periods of ads were compared - 2003-2004, with 1989-1990 - from three widely circulated travel magazines, to gauge any differences discernible over the course of fifteen years with respect to how female tourists are being depicted. Methods included quantitative tabulated comparisons of the gender of travel ad subjects, content analyses of ads featuring female tourists, and participant input from questionnaires and focus groups. The female travel consumers who participated in this study were demographically compatible with the readership of the magazines in which these ads are shown. An intensive interview with one executive at a creative agency responsible for several of the ads was also conducted. <br /><br /> Results indicated that, while representations of female travelers have significantly increased both numerically and relatively to those depicting other sorts of tourists in recent years, this trend does not broadly include more progressive representations of women's increased socio-economic independence and status. <br /><br /> Female travelers are predominantly portrayed in ads as: <ul> <li>Young and attractive</li> <li>Sexualized</li> <li>Passive</li> <li>Sleeping or reclining, seemingly more interested in lying around (decoratively) in a trance-like state and being "pampered" than in actively engaging with their environment. </li></ul> These portrayals were incompatible overall with what female travelers themselves reported they enjoyed doing when they travel, and in terms of what they reported they find resonant in travel advertising. Overall, participants found the travel ads featuring females to be unappealing. <br /><br /> However, there were indications that the ways female travelers are portrayed in ads are slowly evolving to better reflect wider spread female economic independence and autonomy. In particular, a new phenomenon shown in more contemporary ads was the emergence of a "female gaze". This finding coincides with the simultaneous sexualization of female travel ad subjects ? perhaps in reflection of a current post-feminist emphasis on sexual freedom for females. Also noted was an increasing de-emphasis on specific destinations in ads, in favour of a more idealized generic "placelessness. " Female participants in this study did not generally like this trend. There appeared to be some lag in the industry in recognizing that "regular" (i. e. older, average-looking) women are an important source of revenue, in terms of making a larger proportion of travel decisions. Several possible explanations were offered to address this apparent gap between how females in travel ads are being depicted, and the stated likes and preferences of actual female travel consumers who participated in this study. <br /><br /> Female traveler-participants in this study indicated they would very much prefer to see actively engaged, older and realistic-looking female subjects in travel ads, in specific destinations. They noted that travel is a particularly personal form of consumerism, often closely interwoven with one's own sense of personal identity. That result may in part explain the strong negative reactions of many participants to some portrayals in these ads. Tourism-related marketing industries could also do far better in terms of better cultivating the goodwill of female travel consumers, and more successfully attracting their favorable attention.

Iqani, Mehitabel. "Consumer magazine covers in the public realm." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2009. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2064/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis aims to contribute to a critique of hegemonic consumerism and explores the ways in which its discourses are mediated through glossy magazine covers as constituted in, and constituting, public retail spaces (newsstands). The research is theoretically contextualised in two ways. Firstly, by locating the empirical research objects with regard to existing scholarship that addresses the magazine genre. Secondly, by exploring fundamental concepts invoked by those research objects: consumerism, consumption and commodities; publicity, public space and visual culture. Hinging on a theorisation of the public realm as a space of appearance, admiration and display, following Hannah Arendt (1958), a trio of dialectical frameworks are put forward as fundamental to framing an empirical exploration of consumer magazine covers/newsstands. These are: simulation/materiality, manipulation/empowerment and subject/object. Methodologically, the research employs a combination of social and semiotic methods, the former a participant observation and visual survey of nine newsstand sites, the latter an intertextual, multimodal discourse and visual analysis of a corpus of magazine cover texts sourced from those newsstands. A thick description of newsstand spaces roots the thesis in social context and intertextual milieu, provides insight into the shapes of consumerist discourse in public space, and underscores the detailed analysis of the formal elements of the magazine covers. The thesis makes a contribution to theories of consumerist aesthetics by filling in empirical detail to the theoretical dialectics outlined. As well as this, it provides an account of the material modalities of magazines covers, articulated as the mechanics of gloss, and shows how this contributes to the mediation of celebrity imagery. Further, it argues that consumerism relies upon three core textual strategies that combine to create a powerful form of mediation. The first is commercial heteroglossia, which is achieved through a visual celebration of commodity choice and a multiplicity of voices of sell. The second is a pornographic imagination, which is achieved through the exploitation of the eroticised gaze and commodification of the body, and a language of desire. The third is paper mirroring, which is achieved through the persistent invitation to self-imaging through the appeal of images of faces and verbal, individualising invitations to self-care and management.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the impact of a mega-store on the existing businesses in a specific area--Magazine Street in New Orleans. The potential mega-store is a 200,000 square foot Wal-Mart Supercenter that is part of the retail component of the St. Thomas housing re-development. The focus of this project is the retail competition that might be generated by this mega-store. Businesses were studied and placed into categories as either direct or indirect competitors to the mega-store. Previous research identified certain categories of store types that could be impacted (either positively or negatively) by the location of national stores in their communities. These categories were used to determine the impact that Wal-Mart might have on businesses on Magazine Street. Business owners were surveyed to determine how they thought they would be impacted. In the opinions of the business owners, the overall impact that a Wal-Mart would have on Magazine Street businesses would be negative. The surveys do show, however, mixed attitudes among the Magazine Street business owners toward Wal-Mart's coming.

Sob o comando do imigrante português José Vasco Ramalho Ortigão, a atuação do Parc Royal é analisada como um veículo para o entendimento da lógica de funcionamento de parte da sociedade do Rio de Janeiro no início do Século XX, desvelando a adoção de valores, usos e costumes que expressavam os interesses de um determinado grupo social.<br>This dissertation recounts the history of the Parc Royal, a department store that existed in Rio de Janeiro between 1873 and 1943, a time span that included the Belle Époque (1898-1914) and the 1920s, both of which were periods of complex transformations in style, commerce, communication and social mores. Besides examining these changes, the object sheds light on questions such as the adoption of foreign habits of civility, the dissemination of the culture of appearances and consumption of iconic goods and the evolution of ideas of feminine beauty and women’s role in society. The study is based on research of primary sources, consisting mainly of publicity material and news stories about the store at the time. Under the guidance of its main owner, Portuguese immigrant José Vasco Ramalho Ortigão, the picture that emerges from Parc Royal performance provides insight into the values, habits and customs that reflect the interests of the social groups from which the store’s customers were drawn.

Abstract:
The Government of Botswana recognises the important role that women can play in the economic development of the country, particularly in the agricultural sector, with respect to food security at both household and national levels. The study sought to investigate how women in agriculture are represented in the Botswana Agrinews Magazine. Moreover, it sought to establish whether, and how, messages conveyed to audience by the Botswana Agrinews Magazine promote any type of social or economic interaction between farming communities, individuals and/or government and other stakeholders. The sources of data were the articles that reported on women farmers from the sample of the Botswana Agrinews Magazine, over 24 months, that is, from January 2012 to December 2013. This magazine under study is a government publication targeting the broad Botswana farming community. Critical discourse analysis revealed that women farmers participated in events associated with commercial horticultural farming, dry land farming (field crop production), in the arable farming sector, at Consumer Fairs and Regional Agricultural shows for Commercial Farmers respectively, as well as in pastoral farming sector events at Agricultural shows. They also participated in the arable farming sector agricultural activities for commercial horticultural farmers and those for subsistence dry land farming. Furthermore, the results revealed that women farmers encountered constraints in the different ventures, they undertook in both arable and pastoral farming. However, the reports showed that they received support from the government and/or other stakeholders to counteract their constraints. Furthermore, the analysis identified the coverage on the themes of (1) arable farming, (2) pastoral farming, (3) integrated farming, and (4) attitudes of both women in agriculture and Ministry of Agriculture workers, which promoted women farmers’ participation in the agricultural sector.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis Printed Independent Magazines in Post-Digital Age tries to discover the motivation of editors-in-chief/art directors for creating a printed, independent magazine in Central Europe and at the same time how these magazines are influenced by post-digital trends. It uses a qualitative method of Grounded Theory based on data from semi-structured interviews. In the practical part of the research, nine authors from Austria, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary were approached. From the total number of respondents, data was obtained from seven of them. In the theoretical part, the work is focused on the history of independent print, in terms of technological changes in the printing field and it defines the term "printed independent magazine". The main contribution of the work is a mapping of the Central European independent magazine scene, which has not been thoroughly examined in any academic work yet. The text puts this scene in the international context, and it points out the certain specifics which are associated with Central Europe.

Abstract:
The focus of this diploma thesis is the development and change in printed media. It is aimed at fashion periodicals from their beginning to present time. Czech mutations of ELLE and Harper's Bazaar were chosen as specific examples. The thesis is divided into several independent sections. In the first one, terms and theoretical solutions are defined and later further examined. The theory of parasocial interaction is used to view the chosen media as if they were individuals able to establish relationships with their readers through social media. Media are also assessed as a constituent of an industry field, in which rivalries take place and therefore it is necessary to adjust to the changing technological environment. Next part of the thesis is an attempt to describe the development of fashion magazines with an extra focus on visual transformation as well as on the change of communication strategies towards readers. Situation abroad and in the Czech Republic is detailed. In the practical section, there is an attempt at answering the research question, what are the communication options and how are they used in the traditional printed fashion magazines in the online setting. Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with Discourse analysis of music magazine Spark, which refers to metal music. The main standpoint is the phraseology and the choice of metaphorical expression which are used in the magazíne. They are determined by aesthetic and cultural context, to which the magazíne relates. Specific indexicality at the linguistic level refers, in a specific way, to musical context. The theoretical basis is stylistic analysis of specifically modified publicistic operational style, of its lexical items, phraseology and imaginativeness. Emphasis is layed on tenseness between the automatization in the use of means of expression and some author's style actualization. Both tendencies are relevant to the text contextualization. The first part of the thesis, named Introduction, presents the thematic structure of the magazíne and its specific form of advertising, the second part, named Texts, is focused on stylistic analysis of texts and their interpretation in the light of cultural context. In this second part are presented the persvazive aspects of the magazíne, in consideration of Christian values. Abstract:
There are many works focusing on stereotypes usually connected with minorities including gays in news and media in general. However, there is no study that would describe the common features of gay media products, especially characteristics of gay magazines. This work analyzes in both qualitative and quantitative way two life style magazines targeted at homosexuals - Czech LUI and British Attitude. First, on their bases the advertisements included are described - of gay and non-gay brands. Further the topics and themes used are pointed out - those that appear at the pages the most often, then the other ones that you can find rather rarely. A query among gay people is added as it proposes another point of view for the result of the analyses. This work also answers to the questing how sexual signs and connections are used in gay magazines and what is the amount of articles that have any sexual signs. The results of this study can be used for further gender media works or as the purpose or building a new Czech gay magazine.
