Abstract:
The three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer developing on a rotor blade of an axial flow compressor was measured using a minature “x” configuration hot-wire probe. The measurements were carried out at nine radial locations on both surfaces of the blade at various chordwise locations. The data derived includes streamwise and radial mean velocities and turbulence intensities. The validity of conventional velocity profiles such as the “power law profile” for the streamwise profile, and Mager and Eichelbrenner’s for the radial profile, is examined. A modification to Mager’s crossflow profile is proposed. Away from the blade tip, the streamwise component of the blade boundary layer seems to be mainly influenced by the streamwise pressure gradient. Near the tip of the blade, the behavior of the blade boundary layer is affected by the tip leakage flow and the annulus wall boundary layer. The “tangential blockage” due to the blade boundary layer is derived from the data. The profile losses are found to be less than that of an equivalent cascade, except in the tip region of the blade.

Abstract:
Where the dusty village of Smirat now sits hunched against the winds of the Tunisian desert, there once stood the country villa of a wealthy Roman named Magerius. Prominently displayed in Magerius’ villa was a (now well-known) mosaic depicting a beast hunt in the arena. But the presumed stars of the show, four pairs of hunters and leopards, are placed at the corners of the mosaic, while centre-stage is dominated by a figure bearing a plate of money, and a block of text explaining that these are the funds with which Magerius has generously offered to pay for the show. Contrary to the ancient donor's expectations, however, the modern observer is not struck by Magerius’ munificence, but rather by the meanness of his show compared to those put on in Rome. The emperor Titus (r. 79–81), for example, had 9,000 animals killed during the hundred-day-long inauguration of the Flavian Amphitheatre (Cass. Dio 66[66 Cary].25.1). Magerius’ leopards, worthy of a mosaic in the provinces, would have provided about ten minutes’ worth of entertainment in the capital.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Routinely, hydrocephalus related to fourth ventricular outlet obstruction (FVOO) has been managed with ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting or endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). Few reports on Magendie foraminoplasty exist, and Luschka foraminoplasty has not been described. OBJECTIVE: To present an alternative technique in the management of FVOO via an endoscopic transventricular transaqueductal Magendie and Luschka foraminoplasty and to discuss the indications, technique, findings, and outcomes. METHODS: Between 1994 and 2011, all patients who underwent endoscopic Magendie and Luschka foraminoplasty were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 33 Magendie (28) and/or Luschka (5) foraminoplasties were performed in 30 patients. Twenty-three were adult and 7 were pediatric patients. The etiology of the FVOO was divided into primary etiologies (congenital membrane in 5 and atresia in 2) and secondary causes (neurocysticercosis in 14 patients, bacterial meningitis in 9). Fifteen (50%) had previously failed procedures. Intraoperative findings that led to Magendie/Luschka foraminoplasty were ETV not feasible to perform, nonpatent basal subarachnoid space, or primary FVOO. Minor postoperative complications were seen in 3 patients. Only 26 patients had long-term follow-up; 17 (65.3%) of these had clinical improvement and did not require further procedures. Nine (34.7%) did not improve. Eight required another procedure (7 shunts, and 1 endoscopic procedure). One patient died. CONCLUSION: Flexible neuroendoscopic transventricular transforaminal Magendie and Luschka foraminoplasty is feasible and safe. These procedures may prove to be viable alternatives to standard ETV and VP shunt in appropriate patients. Adequate intraoperative assessment of ETV success is necessary to identify patients who will benefit.

Abstract:
✓A membrane obstruction of the foramina of Magendie and Luschka is an uncommon origin of hydrocephalus characterized by unusual clinical symptoms of rhomboid fossa hypertension. Various surgical approaches have been proposed to alleviate this obstruction, including opening the obstructed foramen of Magendie using suboccipital craniectomy, shunting procedures, and more recently, endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). In some cases, however, reshaping of the posterior fossa due to the collapse of the prepontine cistern could make ETV difficult for the surgeon and dangerous to the patient. In these cases, endoscopic opening of the foramen of Magendie by transaqueductal navigation of the fourth ventricle is a suitable and feasible therapeutic option.

Abstract:
Abstract The Social Security Administration (SSA) launched the Compassionate Allowances List (CAL) in 2008. This created a mechanism for expediting review and delivery of disability benefits, while decreasing application backlog. This study hypothesized that developmental disorders, such as Smith-Magenis syndrome, may meet criterion for inclusion. An evaluative review of the literature was undertaken to determine if the expedited review criterion was met. Ten databases were searched and articles meeting pre-defined criteria were coded according to the SSA definition of disability to determine if severity indices screen in or screen out certain severity levels or exclude Smith-Magenis syndrome entirely in relation to the CAL program. It was strongly recommended that Smith-Magenis syndrome receive consideration for inclusion in the CAL.

Abstract:
Recently, the simulation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) via SCAPS-1D has been widely reported. In this study, we adopted SCAPS-1D as a simulation tool for the numerical simulation of lead-free (Pb-free) PSCs. We used methyl ammonium germanium iodide (MAGeI3) as a light absorber, zinc oxysulphide (ZnOS) as an electron transport layer (ETL), and spiro-OMeTAD as a hole transport layer. Further, the thickness of the ZnOS, MAGeI3, and spiro-OMeTAD layers was optimized. The optimal thicknesses of the ZnOS, MAGeI3, and spiro-OMeTAD layers were found to be 100 nm, 550 nm, and 100 nm, respectively. The optimized MAGeI3-based PSCs exhibited excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.62%, fill factor (FF) of 84.05%, and Jsc of 14.51 mA/cm2. A fantastic open circuit voltage of 1.77 V was also obtained using SCAPS-1D. We believe that these theoretically optimized parameters and conditions may help improve the experimental efficiency of MAGeI3-based PSCs in the future.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Smith–Magenis Syndrome (SMS) is a rare multisystem genetic disorder caused by a heterozygous deletion of or a heterozygous pathogenic variant in RAI1 on chromosome 17p11.2. characterized by the variable intellectual deficit, sleep disturbance, brachycephaly, midface hypoplasia, prognathism, hoarse voice, speech delay with or without hearing loss, psychomotor and growth retardation, cutaneous features, and behaviour problems. Our reported case is a term newborn diagnosed antenatally in the feto-maternal unit to have large multi-cystic dysplastic left kidney and unilateral cerebralventriculomegaly. The genetic disorder was suspected due to symmetric IUGR and dysmorphic features. Chromosomal micro-array confirmed the diagnosis of Smith-Magenis Syndrome.MRI brain confirmed Dandy-Walker spectrum malformation. Ultrasound abdomen showed left multi-cystic dysplastic kidney. Smith-Magenis Syndrome is usually diagnosed in childhood and little is known about its presentation in neonates especially in the Arab population. Our patient presented with Intra-cranial haemorrhage, seizures, thrombocytopenia, feeding difficulty, hypoglycemia and acute kidney injury; which all resolve before discharge.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the reproducibility and the interobserver coefficient of concordance between the AO/Magerl and AOSpine classifications for thoracolumbar spine fractures. Methods: Retrospective study of radiographic data analysis. Data were collected from 31 radiographic studies of patients with thoracolumbar spine fracture and distributed to a team involving spinal surgeons and residents. The fractures were classified according to the AO/Magerl and AOSpine classifications. Statistical analysis was performed using the Cohen Kappa test to assess the coefficient of concordance. Results: The Kappa value for interobserver concordance of AO/Magerl classification was κ = 0.70 and standard deviation was 0.16. For the AOSpine classification, we observed κ = 0.76, both with significance level α = 0.05 and P<0.001. Conclusions: We conclude that the interobserver concordance of the new AOSpine classification is similar to the AO/Magerl classification. This conclusion reinforces the reproducibility of the new AOSpine classification. Level of evidence: IV,Type of Study: Case series.

Abstract:
Dandy-Walker malformation is a part of Dandy-Walker complex and characterized as development anomaly of posterior fossa. Etiology is not definitely known. Many theories suggested as agenesis of Luschka and Magendie foramens, malformation of fourth ventricle root and delayed opening of foramen Magendie. Prenatal ultrasonography is important on diagnosis. Cystic dilatation of posterior fossa, hypo- or agenesis of cerebellar vermis is the main sonographic findings. Hydrocephaly may exist. This study reveals Dandy-Walker malformation with existence of hypoplasia of cerebellar hemispheres, meningocele and polyhydramnios.

Abstract:
✓Since the early 19th century, significant controversy has persisted over the competing claims of two men, Charles Bell and François Magendie, to a pivotal discovery: that the dorsal spinal roots subserve sensation, whereas the ventral spinal roots subserve motion. However, the foundations of neuroanatomy on which Bell and Magendie built their research was formed two millennia in advance. Exploration of the work of four ancient scholars—Herophilus, Erasistratus, Aretaeus, and Galen–reveals a remarkable early appreciation of the separate neural pathways (if not the correct physiology) responsible for sensory and motor control.

Abstract:
In the early nineteenth century, Charles Bell and François Magendie engaged in a decades-long priority dispute over the discovery of the roots of motor and sensory nerves. The constantly recalibrated arguments of its participants illuminate changes in the life sciences during that period. When Bell first wrote about the nerves in 1811, surgeon-anatomists ran small schools out of their homes, natural theology was in vogue, exchanges between British and French medical practitioners were limited by the Napoleonic Wars, and British practitioners typically rejected experimental physiology and vivisection. By the end of Magendie's career, medical science was produced in the laboratory, taught through artfully produced performances of the sort at which Magendie excelled, and disseminated through journals. It is not entirely clear which historical character, Bell or Magendie, ‘won’ the dispute, nor that they even had clear and consistent positions in it, but what is clear is that one style of science had won out over the other, and over the course of the dispute, pedagogy lost pride of place in medical science.
