Abstract:
A few studies have focused on the west Arabic (Maghreb) dialects for which resources are rare. To handle this problem, we devoped a web-based database of speech from Tunisian, Algerian and Moroccan speakers covering the diversity of Arabic dialects spoken in north Africa. Then speaker identification and verification experiments have been conducted in order to evaluate the performance of each dialect-based system. A baseline system using Timit database have also be developed for comparison purposes. The experiments show that the performances of dialectal speaker identification systems outperfor

This article presents an assessment of the implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) in the context of the Arab Maghreb Union’s ongoing regional integration efforts and its main contributions. It indicates that trade-related costs hamper not only Africa’s integration with the rest of the world but, more specifically, its regional integration.  The article analyzes some relevant indicators from the World Bank Doing Business database. Given the asymmetric magnitude of transaction costs by international standards, the analysis affirms how critical trade facilitatio

COVID-19, caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a very contagious disease that has killed many people worldwide. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the spread of the disease appears to be slower in Africa. Although several studies have been published on the relationship between meteorological parameters and COVID-19 transmission, the effects of climate conditions on COVID-19 remain largely unexplored and without consensus. However, the transmission of COVID-19 and sensitivity to climate conditions are also not fully understood i

Medjerda is a key transboundary watershed in the Maghreb region, crossing from the Algerian mountains through northern Tunisia. Therefore, the analysis of the rainfall regime in this basin is of paramount importance for water resources management and regional economic development, notably concerning agriculture. This study examines the rainfall trends over the Medjerda watershed on multi-temporal scales (monthly, seasonally and annually) with a database of monthly rainfall observed in 60 stations evenly spread over the watershed. The purpose of this study is to obtain a spatially explicit assessment of the impact of reservoirs on natural river sediment fluxes to the sea in the Mediterranean Maghreb Basin (MMB), a region where both mechanical erosion rates and the anthropogenic pressure on surface water resources are high. We combined modeling of riverine sediment yields (sediment fluxes divided by the drainage basin area) and water drainage intensities in a 5’ × 5’ grid point resolution (~10 km × 10 km) with a compilation of existing reservoirs in the area, and calculated sediment trapping based on average water reside

Abstract. The potentiality of dust particles to mix with sulphate over Tropical Africa and the Atlantic Ocean is investigated by combining a meso-scale meteorological model with a dust production model and an SO2 emission database. This mixing process study is based on a qualitative approach where the reactivity of dust is estimated from its calcite content, which is the main mineral known to be reactive with sulphur species. We are presenting a 1-month simulation (January 1993). Our results show that the regions Northern Egypt and Libya (NEL), Western Sahara (WS) and Sahel (S) are the major s

The extent of access to energy of displaced persons in settlements and camps on the African continent is largely unknown. A multitude of contextual factors, such as the location, the characteristics of housing, legal status, socio-cultural background, and the availability of humanitarian and public services, impact the living conditions and needed energy services. Limitations in accessing energy services have direct, multilayered, and far-reaching implications, including impacts on health, nutrition, education, protection, and livelihood.
