Abstract:
This article analyses postmodern Gothic rewritings of ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by three Latin American writers as works in which different degrees of appropriation of themes and strategies from the classic tale, and the use of the metaphor of the magic mirror, achieve ideologically subversive effects. Gothic rewritings of ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Meruane, Volpi and Enríquez denounce intolerance and present an eminent link between literary works and troubled historical contexts.

American Indian author Susan Power’s novel The Grass Dancer is often categorized as magical realism, yet Power has stated the novel is a representation of her reality and that it is not a magical realist text. The term magical realism was first applied to the work of Latin American authors such as Gabriel García Márquez whose writing depicts magical events in a matter-of-fact narrative tone. It has since expanded to include other cultures. The question is whether it is a term that can readily be applied to the literary work of all cultures. The closest Wendy B. In this thesis, I hope to demonstrate that what I call the magic contest tradition, that is the episodes of competitive wonder-working that appear in a wide variety of apocryphal and non-canonical Christian texts, made an important contribution to the development of Christian thought during the second to the fifth centuries CE. This contribution was to articulate ‘the way’ to be a Christian in a world which was not isolated from the secular, and not insulated from the reality of the Roman empire. First, I demonstrate that a tradition of texts which feature magic contests exists within the broa
