Abstract:
BackgroundEpilepsy is often explained through allegory; from magical thinking to misfiring neurons. It is important to appreciate pervasive media portrayals which influence lay attitudes toward epilepsy. George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire, and the HBO television adaptation A Game of Thrones, introduce characters with ‘mundane’ and ‘mystical’ epilepsy to millions. Cases are presented to highlight these varying portrayals.CasesRA, 8 years old, has ‘shaking sickness’. Triggered by stress, his hands ‘shake’ with subsequent involvement of all limbs. He loses consciousness, is incontinent of urine, and demonstrates post-ictal confusion. He is enmeshed with his mother and his condition is viewed as a manifestation of his unsuitability to rule.BS fell at 9 years old, resulting in a coma. Subsequently he remains paraplegic with dialeptic episodes. During absences, he can ‘possess’ animals or people, and experiences impossible hallucinations. These abilities are portrayed as empowering for a boy who suffers heavy stigma against physical disability.ConclusionFans will probably not adopt ‘magical’ views but may internalise stigma weighed against characters with both ‘mundane’ and ‘magical’ epilepsy. Due to the large audience, clinicians working with epilepsy patients might benefit from awareness of these portrayals.

Abstract:
Combining ideas from cultural studies, psychoanalysis, and literary criticism, this essay proposes an interdisciplinary approach to the emerging field of post-Soviet memory studies. Sociological polls demonstrate that approximately one-fourth of Russians remember that their relatives were victims of terror, yet the existing monuments, museums, and rituals are inadequate to commemorate these losses. In this economy of memory, ghosts and monsters become a prominent subject of post-Soviet culture. The incomplete work of mourning turns the unburied dead into the undead. Analyzing Russian novels and films of the last decade, Alexander Etkind emphasizes the radical distortions of history, semihuman creatures, fantastic cults, manipulations of the body, and circular time that occur in these fictional works. To account for these phenomena, Etkind coins the concept “magical historicism” and discusses its relation to the magical realism of postcolonial literatures. The memorial culture of magical historicism is not so much postmodern as it is, precisely, post-Soviet.

Abstract:
The undertaken research replenishes the pool of knowledge about folklore texts and the functions of spellonyms as signs saturated with national and cultural meanings. The study establishes and compares linguistic and cultural characteristics of spellonyms in the onomasticon of Australian and Nanaian aetiological tales. The authors proposed a typology of spellonyms which includes 5 thematic groups: nominations of deities of different nature; nominations of celestial bodies transformed from representatives of the tribe; nominations of objects of worship and magical rituals; nominations of magical natural phenomena; nominations of magical creatures. The results of the research demonstrate a significant prevalence in the number of deity nominations among Australian spellonyms, while the majority of Nanaian spellonyms refer to magical artefacts. The research has also proved the utmost significance of the water element in the folk worldview of Australian Aborigines and the equivalent importance of the water, land and air elements in the Nanai folk worldview. The obvious preference in both folklore traditions is given to nominations of native origin transcribed into the language of translation. The structural types of spellonyms vary from group to group, with the majority of monolexemic nominations.

Abstract:
This article is an endeavor to provide an insight into Native American novelist Louise Erdrich's use of the magical-realist technique in an attempt to harmonize the mythic and modern conceptions of reality represented by the Native American and Euro American subjects, respectively. The article demonstrates that in an attempt to seek a way possible to intertwine the two cultures, to wed the Native and the European ideologies of the world into accommodative space and to strike out the all-pervasive differences between the two people inhabiting the same land, Erdrich delves into the structuring principles of each culture's conceptualizing and internalizing the reality and the faith in it, and presents them as simultaneous albeit contrary versions of the same events, suggesting the possibility of simultaneous and harmonious co-existence of the two views, each retaining its essential outlook and yet respecting and accommodating the other. Employing Bower and Paula Gunn Allen's theoretical postulations of magical realism as a particular discourse embedded in the mythic and cultural beliefs of the Native American subjects, the article explores the mythic and modern formulations of female identity in Native American magical-realist fiction Tracks.

Abstract Scholars tend to view the healing of Naaman and the subsequent affliction of Gehazi in 2 Kgs 5 as polemic against magic and non-Israelite ideas about disease and healing. However, in analyzing the motif of צרעת as literary device it can be demonstrated that 2 Kgs 5 is not opposed to magic. My paper will show instead how the consultation between the Aramean and the Israelite kings, the depiction of Naaman’s healing, as well as the circumstances of Gehazi’s affliction draw from generic ideas about magic to bring into sharper focus the power of the prophet and the presence of Yahweh in the land of Israel.

Tiffin, Jessica. "The magical land : ecological consciousness in fantasy romance." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20452.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: p. 133-137.
The modern genre of fantasy romance is a relatively recent development in popular literature, and one which is gaining increasing popularity. In its contemporary form, fantasy romance has developed from earlier fantasy and romance forms, and a generic base which includes romance, comedy and pastoral can be identified. Conventional fantasy romance is concerned with the defense of a magical land, characterised in terms of beauty, health and balance, from some destructive threat. This concern with the health of the land reflects modern ecological consciousness and awareness of potential environmental destruction. Ecological awareness can be traced through critical analysis of various works of fantasy romance. J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, as the text which marked the beginning of the modern fantasy romance form, shows the potential for ecological awareness in the genre, although Tolkien's cultural context of post-war England in some ways inhibits ecological consciousness in the narrative. The development of a more modern ecological consciousness is studied through investigation of the Riddlemaster trilogy of Patricia A. McKillip, which shows a more abstracted sense of environmental destruction expressed through a concern with power and identity. Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant provides a narrative awareness of generic convention which could be construed as postmodern. Derrida's deconstruction of the notion of genre allows an interesting insight into Donaldson's processes of generic mixing, although the narrative's success is ultimately compromised by Donaldson's lack of authorial control. Sheri S. Tepper's True Game series displays a highly contemporary conflation of ecological concerns with those of feminism, as the destructive impulses of largely male competitiveness are contrasted to an organic and intuitive female response to the land. Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker series, in its depiction of an alternative settler America, integrates ecological concerns with those of racial harmony, while his construction of a messianic hero recalls Card's own Mormon background. Finally, some attention is given to fantasy romance as a potentially escapist genre rather than one which inspires actual ecological awareness, and links are made with popular elements in the ecological movement itself. The thesis concludes by proposing the relevance of fantasy romance's magical land as a regenerative ideal of health and beauty in an increasingly ugly and ecologically deteriorating modern environment.

Duchowny, Alexia Teles. "De Magia (Ms. Laud Or. 282, Bodleian Library): edição e estudo." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/ALDR-6YPPFF.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of the edition and the study of the unedited manuscript De Magia (Ms. Laud Or. 282), kept in the Oriental Section of the Bodleian Library, in Oxford, England. De Magia is an astrological guide written in the first half of the fifteenth century and it is an aljamiado manuscript: the characters are in semicursive Hebrew and the language is Old Portuguese. The general goals of the thesis are to produce a semidiplomatic edition of De Magia and to make an analysis some characteristics of the aljamiado Old Portuguese. Emphasis has been given to the understanding of the graphemes bet, vet and vav, equivalent to and of non-aljamiado Portuguese. In the Introduction, the objectives are presented and the edition of the manuscript and the analysis of bet, vet and vav are justified; in Chapter 1, the codicological and paleographic aspects of De Magia are detailed and the manuscript is dated; in Chapter 2, its graphematic representation is studied and the criteria used for the transcription of the Hebrew graphemes into Latin ones are described. The basis for the transcription was the Crónica Geral de Espanha (1344). Its data was handled through the computer program WordSmith Tools; in Chapter 3, the option for the semidiplomatic edition is justified, and the adopted norms of the transcription are described, before the presentation of the first 168 folios of De Magia; in Chapter 4, the graphemes bet, vet and vav are analyzed and compared between themselves and with the corresponding graphemes in the Latin and the non-aljamiado Old Portuguese. The interpretation of the data made it possible to conclude that three graphemes (bet, vet and vav) are being used instead of two ( and ) to represent the same sounds, bringing better understanding to the subject. The Appendix is composed of the transcription of some folios of the unedited manuscript 5-2-32, of the Colombina Library, in Sevilla, Spain, of some folios of the unedited manuscript Ms. Laud Or. 310, of the Bodleian Library, and the last folio of ms. 282. De Magia was the first aljamiado text in Portuguese edited and analyzed with strictness to explicit norms and attention to details. This pioneering study contributes to a more realistic phonic perspective of Old Portuguese and for a better comprehension of the codicological and paleographical aspects of medieval manuscripts. Hopefully, it will stimulate more studies of the Portuguese aljamias, kept unknown in library bookshelves.

Pykhtina, Olga. "Magic Land design and the use of interactive tabletops in non-directive play therapy with primary school children : to play or not to play?" Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2868.

Full text
Abstract:
This research considers the role and design of digital technologies in play therapy settings with young children. Through an aggregation of academic and practitioner literature, and the results of focus group and individual interviews with therapists and counsellors, a set of design requirements for digital technologies that support non-directive play within a play therapy context is proposed. The study explores how these complex requirements could support non-directive play therapy principles through the development and evaluation of Magic Land, a set of four play therapy applications for an interactive tabletop. On the basis of the qualitative research evidence, it is suggested that the design guidelines should be deeply rooted in the theoretical foundations of non-directive play therapy and reflect a number of psychoanalytic and child social development theories. The concepts developed in two opposing schools of thought by Piaget and Vygotsky are used to guide the design and map the research findings. Taking into account the children’s interest in technology, the therapists’ skills, the affordances of the technology and the design guidelines aligned with the core theories of play therapy, it was found that the Magic Land application on an interactive tabletop could support such non-directive play therapy principles as the development of a trusting therapeutic relationship, a child’s creative expression and the gradual nature of the therapeutic process. It created opportunities for children to practise exercising a feeling of mastery and taking the initiative, as well as allowing for joyful and non-goal oriented free play.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to investigate if simple vehicle models are realisticand useful in simulator environment. These simple models have been parametrisedby the Department of Electrical Engineering at Linköping University and havebeen validated with good results. The models have been implemented in a simulatorenvironment and a simulator study was made with 24 participants. Eachtest person drove both slalom and double lane change manoeuvres with the simplemodels and with VTI’s advanced model. The test persons were able to successfullycomplete double lane changes for higher velocities with the linear tyre modelcompared to both the non-linear tyre model and the advanced model. The wholestudy shows that aggressive driving of a simple vehicle model with non-linear tyredynamics is perceived to be quite similar to an advanced model. It is noted significantdifferences between the simple models and the advanced model when drivingunder normal circumstances, e.g. lack of motion cueing in the simple model suchas pitch and roll.

Abstract:
This study examines the emergence and growth of paganism over recent decades in a specifically English context, taking into account the various historical, cultural and literary influences and the way paganism has developed as a ‘natural’ product of these. Although the term paganism covers a loose association of distinct branches and traditions, these inspire, influence and feed into each other to a greater or lesser extent, creating a generic paganism that has emerged as the dominant trend, within which individuals concoct and compose their own spirituality. Within a spectrum of practices and beliefs, enough common ground exists for the movement to be recognizable as such, but this contrasts greatly with more traditional ideas of religion. If the growth of paganism is partly explained by the greater availability of information and the use of Internet, it is also seemingly in resonance with various aspects of the contemporary, post-modern western psyche. Furthermore, it has benefited from the official climate concerning positive recognition of minority religions in a multicultural society, although difficulties have arisen in its being accepted as a religion, whether by the authorities, or due to internal factors. This has led to a higher media profile for paganism, sometimes in its favour, but sometimes leading to its scapegoating by newspapers seeking to denounce the perceived excesses of multiculturalism and the “politically correct”. If the name ‘pagan’ seems inappropriate, acting as a barrier in some quarters, no alternative, less controversial term has been found as a replacement. However, it can be noticed that pagan themes and attitudes are being more generally diffused within mainstream culture, with or without the pagan ‘label’

Cost evaluation is one of the entrepreneurial models. The evaluation in this study is based on visual observation and sample estimation. In addition, the analysis on the beverage store consumption behaviors of consumers was discussed, with the questionnaire survey method employed to obtain consumers opinions. The value of existence was evaluated using regression analysis and null hypothesis chi-square test. The visual model was used to assess the flow of crowds. It was found that product sales rates, to some extent, increased within given time. During the testing process, the visual values and temperatures showed no correlation. On the contrary, the crowds were concentrated during lunch and the rush hour after work, reaching the significant standard of above 50%. The first part consists of Chi-square Test and Z Test carried out to verify the gender ratio and average consumption age ratio; the second part consists of consumption amounts and current operating income, with a considerably significant minimum amount (L) and maximum amount (H) in linearity; in the third part, Chi-square Test and Z-test were employed to verify the stores’ main products comprising over 40% of the total. Given the circumstances with the standard set at α=0.05,the verification results show that CSFC and 50 Lan’s main products had more significance, while Tea & Magic Hand showed no significance. Given sufficient data during future development, it is expected that a forecast on ideal values can be made. Related data was first collected in this study as the statistical basis. Through the compiled questionnaire analysis, the operators’ business model and costs were analyzed, further taking into consideration the impact on consumers’ actual purchases. Simple Excel software was used to effectively analyze the predicted and evaluated effects on entrepreneurs. Secondly, the actual survey was conducted to predict the entrepreneurship funding as the basis and calculate the basic conditions of recovery of principal.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the arrival of the Great Arab Revolt Project (GARP) archaeologists at the derelict Hejaz Railway—GARP’s main study area—which snakes across the deserts and wadis of southern Jordan, from the medieval town of Ma’an to the Bedouin settlement of Mudawwara near the border with Saudi Arabia. There was an enchantment of the senses in finding traces of the world’s first global industrialized conflict alongside those of deep prehistory, churned together it seems by the advent of modern guerrilla warfare, where time is built into the relationship between metal and rust. The sand itself has been touched, blown, and sifted by history, from Nabatean spice traders to Hajj pilgrims, from Ottoman Turkish troops to the Bedouin. Each of these experienced the desert in their own way, and like others in distant parts of the world, brought their own magical thinking to bear on their surroundings. Indeed, the empty desert is anything but, and the ruins of the Arab Revolt emerge from it as a unique heritage of the modern world.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this study is to highlight nonlinear behaviors and periodic orbits of the single-track vehicle model with a delayed feedback controller. Two widely used tire models, namely a linear tire characteristic and Pacejka’s Magic Formula are considered. Linearly stable domains of parameters such as the vehicle speed and the control gains are determined. Periodic solutions originating from Hopf bifurcation points are followed using numerical continuation and the results obtained with the two different tire models are compared. It is shown that neglecting the saturation of the tire lateral forces at total sliding might change the sense of certain Hopf bifurcations from subcritical to supercritical. The results are verified by numerical simulations. The resulting bifurcation diagrams aim to quantify the degree of robustness of these controllers with regards to the initial conditions at various parameter ranges in order to assure stable and safe operation.

Abstract:
Abstract BAJA SAE is an engineering competition that challenges teams to design single-seat all-terrain vehicles that participate in a vast number of events, predominately on soft soils. Efficient performance in the events depends on the traction forces, which are dependent on the mechanical properties of the soil. To accurately model vehicle performance for each event, a model of the tire traction performance is required, and the tire model must be incorporated with a vehicle dynamics simulation. The traction forces at the soil-tire interface can be estimated using the Bekker-Wong stress integration method. However, commercially available vehicle dynamics simulation software, with a focus on on-road vehicles, does not utilize Bekker-Wong parameters. The Pacejka Magic Tire (MT) Formula is a common method for characterizing tire behavior for on-road vehicles. The parameters for the Pacejka MT Formula are usually produced by curve fitting measured tire data. The lack of available measured off-road tire data, as well as the additional variables for off-road tire performance (e.g. soil mechanics), make it difficult for BAJA SAE teams to simulate vehicle performance using commercial vehicle simulation tools. This paper discusses the process and results for estimating traction performance using the Bekker-Wong stress integration method for soft soils and then deriving the Pacejka coefficients based on the Bekker-Wong method. The process will enable teams to use the Pacejka Magic Tire Formula coefficients for simulating vehicle performance for BAJA SAE events, such as the hill climb, (off-road) land maneuverability, tractor pull, etc.

Abstract:
Body reinforcements may have large influence in the handling perception of a professional driver. This paper presents testing and CAE techniques to approach and analyze the phenomena. A full vehicle multi body model correlated against test data was built. The model includes all vehicle subsystems: front and rear suspensions with rotating wheels and tire model in Magic Formula representation, steering line, powertrain mounting system and car body. Flexible components have been implemented for the car trimmed body, the front subframe and the rear twist beam suspension. A special vehicle set-up has been defined for the testing session, including the standard handling equipment and an advanced system measurement based on strain gauges located on the vehicle body. Strain gauge locations have been defined through support of the simulation. Several handling maneuvers (constant radius cornering, step steering at different lateral accelerations, ISO lane change and reverse ISO lane change) have been performed. Results from strain gauges have been obtained and analyzed. Advanced testing equipments are necessary to demonstrate the influence of body flexibility, which standard handling testing equipment does not allow. This represents the first step for understanding the advanced handling perception feeling due to the body deformation and for defining a systematical approach to correlate with objective measurements.

Abstract:
Even if there are many software and mathematical models available in the literature to analyze the dynamic performance of Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs), it is always difficult to identify or collect the required vehicle parameters from the vehicle manufacturer for simulation. In analyzing the vehicle handling performance, a difficult and complex task is to use an appropriate tire model that can accurately characterize the ground-wheel interaction. Though, the well-known ‘Magic Formula’ is widely used for this purpose, it requires expensive test equipment to estimate the Magic Formula coefficients. The design of longitudinal and lateral controllers plays a significant role in path tracking of an UGV. Though the speed of the vehicle may remain almost constant in most of the maneuvers such as lane change, Double Lane Change (DLC), step steer, cornering, etc., design of the lateral controller is always a challenging task as it depends on the vehicle parameters, road information and also on the steering actuator dynamics. Although a mathematical model is an abstraction of the actual system, the controller is designed based on this model and then deployed on the real system. In this paper, a realistic mathematical model of the vehicle considering the steering actuator dynamics has been developed by calculating the cornering stiffnesses from the basic tire information and the vertical load on each tire. A heading angle controller of the UGV has been considered using the Point-to-Point navigation algorithm. Then, these controllers have been implemented on a test platform equipped with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a Global Positioning System (GPS). A wide range of experiments such as J-Turn, lane change and DLC have also been conducted for comparison with the simulation results. Sensitivity analysis has been carried out to check the robustness and stability of the controller by varying the cornering stiffness of tires, the most uncertain parameter. The longitudinal speed of the vehicle is assumed to vary between a minimum value of 1.4 m/s and a maximum value of 20 m/s. It has been found that when the vehicle is moving at a constant velocity of 3.2 m/s, a heading angle change of 20 degrees can be achieved within 3 seconds with 2% steady state error using a proportional controller. It was observed that at lower speeds, the controller is more sensitive to the steering actuator dynamics and at higher speeds, the controller is more sensitive to the cornering stiffness of tires.

Abstract:
Abstract Tire inflation pressure affects both tire longitudinal and lateral stiffness and thus may impose a considerable influence on vehicle dynamics and handling performance. This paper presents a comprehensive study revealing the effects of tire pressure variations and their distribution among four tires on vehicle dynamics and handling performance. An extended Magic Formula tire model and a modified UniTire model involving tire inflation pressure are employed to describe the tire longitudinal and lateral forces, respectively. Two groups of vehicle maneuvers are simulated in CarSim: a single lane change maneuver with braking and a double lane change maneuver, to exhibit the effects of tire inflation pressure. Various tire pressure variations including all four tires at same and different pressures are examined. A vehicle dynamics, lateral motion stability index, and driver steering workload are utilized to quantify the influence of tire pressure variations and distributions. Analyses on the simulation results indicate that: 1) a front tire pressure reduction induces vehicle understeering tendency and a larger steering angle; 2) a rear tire pressure reduction causes oversteering characteristics and a sacrifice on vehicle stability with a larger vehicle sideslip angle; 3) all-tire inflation pressure decrease will increase driver’s steering workload; and 4) lower rear-tire inflation pressure can promote the combined performance of vehicle path-tracking and driver’s steering workload.

Abstract:
Mathematical models simulating the handling behavior of passenger cars are extensively used at a design stage for evaluating the effects of new structural solutions or control systems. The main source of uncertainty in this type of models lies in the tyre-road interaction, due high nonlinearity. Proper estimation of tyre model parameters is thus of utter importance to obtain reliable results. A methodology aimed at identifying the Magic Formula-Tyre (MF-Tyre) model coefficients of the tyres of an axle based only on the measurements carried out on board vehicle (vehicle sideslip angle, yaw rate, lateral acceleration, speed and steer angle) during standard handling maneuvers (step-steers, double lane changes, etc.) is presented in this paper. The proposed methodology is based on Particle Filtering (PF) technique. PF may become a serious alternative to classic model-based techniques, such as Kalman filters. Results of the identification procedure were first checked through simulations. Then PF was applied to experimental data collected on an real instrumented passenger-car vehicles.

Abstract:
Integration of the driver’s steering input together with the four-wheel steering system (4WS) in order to improve the vehicle’s dynamic behavior with respect to yaw rate and body sideslip angle is possible with intelligent vehicle dynamics control systems. The goal of this study is to develop a fuzzy logic controller for this purpose. In the first stage of the study, a three-degree of freedom nonlinear vehicle model including roll dynamics is developed. The Magic Formula is applied in order to formulate the nonlinear characteristics of the tires. In the design of the fuzzy logic controller, a two-dimensional rule table is created based on the error and on the change in the error of sideslip angle, which is to be minimized. Fuzzy logic controlled model is then compared with front wheel steering vehicle and the vehicles having different control strategies that have previously been studied in literature. Simulations indicate that fuzzy logic controlled vehicle can provide zero body sideslip angle in transient motion and quick response in terms of yaw rate during steady state cornering and lane change maneuvers.
