Abstract:
The Left-Hand Path is a controversial form of new Esoteric spirituality, often labeled Satanic, and often perceived as entertaining right-wing political sympathies. It is therefore important to note that two of the most prominent Left-Hand Path groups——the Temple of Set and Dragon Rouge——foster animal rights ideologies, something which is generally considered leftist. Animal rights ideology would seem to be a less than perfect fit with the epistemological individualism, goals of self-deification, and antinomian approaches to predominant religious culture——fundamental elements in Left-Hand Path philosophies. It has nonetheless become an integral part of both the Temple of Set and Dragon Rouge. In this article I examine the manifestations and possible reasons for the rise of the apparent paradox of animal rights ideologies in the Left-Hand Path.

In der ersten Hälfte des Artikels werde ich die Geschichte des Ordens ausführlich beschreiben, seine philosophischen Lehren und Praxis besprechen, und Auskunft über seine Demographie sowie die Organisations- und Einweihungstrukturen. Abstract:
When John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln in Ford's Theatre in Washington on the evening of April 14,1865, he destroyed any possibility that his reputation as an actor would be dispassionately assessed for the foreseeable future. A bitter, fratricidal war was drawing to its close, and Northern newspapers were not interested in being fair; opprobrium was heaped on Booth's name, beginning in the press the following day. Twelve days later he was dead, shot during an attempted arrest. In 1890, his fellow player Clara Morris asserted hopefully, ‘At this late day the country can afford to deal justly with John Wilkes Booth.’ That time had not yet come: in fact, some of the worst -- and silliest -- slanders have been perpetrated in the twentieth century. But surely now, over a hundred years later, it should be possible to set aside that April evening and look dispassionately at Booth's career in the theatre of his time. As well as extending simple justice to a man who seems to have been extremely likeable and idealistic, and an actor interesting enough to deserve study, such a reassessment may serve to correct a distortion which the 'mythologized' view of his career has created: the idea that Edwin Booth was the only promising young tragedian in the early 1860s, which falsifies both Edwin's career and the period in general. Moreover, John's entire career covered a mere ten years, and his four full seasons as a star occurred during the Civil War, an under-researched period. The necessary concentration on so brief a time-span allows a more detailed treatment than would be possible in examining a career of average length, which may in turn illuminate some broader aspects of American theatre during an unsettled and transitional period.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I explored the relationship between Shakespearean tragedy and romance, specifically how each genre treated themes regarding resurrection and the imagination. In romance, I discovered that the imagination became a portal to reality--a way through which characters understood and accepted impermanence, decay, and death. I used romance to illuminate tragedy's failures, showing that in both King Lear and Othello the imagination acts as a mask against the real. I called these imaginative spaces “dream worlds”--fantastical plains in which characters chased their impossible longings for eternity and perfected romantic love. This refusal to engage with the real, I concluded, makes resurrection impossible in tragedy. I was also deeply influenced by the criticism of Harold Goddard, who tends to read Shakespearean tragedy as romance and finds resurrection in both King Lear and Othello. I engaged with his criticism by creating the dream worlds to prove that the imagination can only act as a shield against reality in tragedy.

Ce mémoire en recherche-création s’articule en deux parties, soit un roman et un essai. La résilience des corps, roman à double narration, met en scène Clara et Romain, un couple dont l’avenir est ébranlé par une grossesse surprise. Dans les chapitres s’alternent les voix des deux personnages, tant dans le passé que dans le présent. La voix de Clara se démultiplie, elle qui souffre de schizophrénie. L’essai Femmes sans enfant : une impossibilité? Analyse de La lune dans un HLM de Marie-Sissi Labrèche et d’Un léger désir de rouge d’Hélène Lépine répond à un questionnement soulevé durant l’écriture du roman, soit « Une femme peut-elle dire, sans se justifier, qu’elle ne veut pas d’enfant? ». Les romans La lune dans un HLM de Marie-Sissi Labrèche et Un léger désir de rouge d’Hélène Lépine sont analysés avec une perspective féministe, de façon à faire ressortir la thématique du refus de la maternité dans le discours et dans les actes des personnages.
This master’s thesis in research and creative writing is divided in two parts – a novel and an essay. The former, La résilience des corps [The Resilience in Us], is a dualnarrative novel told from the perspectives of Clara and Romain, a couple whose plans for the future are turned upside-down by an unexpected pregnancy. Through the chapters, the protagonists take turns in the narrator’s seat, going back and forth between their past and present, while Clara’s voice multiplies under the grip of schizophrenia. The essay, titled Femmes sans enfant : une impossibilité? Analyse de La lune dans un HLM de Marie-Sissi Labrèche et d’Un léger désir de rouge d’Hélène Lépine [Women Without Children: An Inconceivable Prospect? An Analysis of Marie-Sissi Labrèche’s La lune dans un HLM and Hélène Lépine’s Un léger désir de rouge], answers a question that arose in the writing process of La résilience des corps: can a woman say « I do not want children » without having to justify her choice? Both novels are analyzed from a feminist perspective as to highlight the theme of motherhood in the characters’ words and action.

This Master's thesis consists of two separate parts: Le vent dans les voiles, a travel fiction, is followed by a short essay, Le voyage comme archeologie de la memoire.
Le vent dans les voiles is both a travel fiction and a short apprenticeship novel. Julien Legare, an idealistic young man, is fond of Jim Morrison and Zarathoustra . As he is travelling in Europe, his dreams of intellectual and emotional liberation are breaking down to pieces. Disillusion eventually leads him to a new vision, beyond childhood nostalgia.
The essay is a mythocritical analysis of three Twentieth Century novels by Le Clezio, Proust and Gabrielle Roy: Le chercheur d'or, A la recherche du temps perdu and La Route d'Altamont . These books have in common the themes of travel, memory and creation. The three protagonists all long for the lost paradise of their childhood, thus they search for their origins. Travelling in space and time, on the outside and inside themselves, they become archaeologists of their own memory, digging for forgotten treasures. Is remembrance a topos of travel literature?

This chapter considers the tension between magic and law: when legal structures are assumed (correctly or incorrectly) to safeguard the rights of individual citizens and punish transgressors against the common good, magic-users become ‘monsters’ for their ability to do harm at a distance, anonymously and without accountability. Beginning with an outline of the transitional moment in Irish history where scientific legal codes started to supplant the de facto belief in folk magic, this chapter looks at ‘spiritual warfare’ narratives and conspiracy tales alike to discuss how malevolent witches, wizards and sorcerers disrupt established norms of legitimacy and authority. The works considered here range from 19th-century depictions of witches as heroic figures standing up to bullying clerics, to 20th-century texts where the magically-inclined are ignorant throwbacks at best and sinister cultists at worst.

L’île est un espace constamment évoqué par l’écrivain haïtienne Marie-Célie Agnant. Dans l’ensemble de son œuvre, les différents milieux aquatiques tels que l’océan et son immensité, la mer des Caraïbes entourant l’île ou les nombreux lagons, mais aussi les fleuves et les petites rivières, sont des éléments qui semblent cohabiter avec la même ampleur dans son pays natal ainsi que dans son imaginaire. En effet, cette omniprésence du liquide élémentaire constitue l’essence d’un langage poétique original, à partir duquel l’eau acquière une remarquable symbolique. En effet, Le livre d’Emma (2001) est parsemé de descriptions où les nuances de la couleur de l’eau de la mer, bleue dans ses profondeurs, des fois grise, orange et rouge au coucher de soleil, cachent des bribes de la mémoire collective du peuple haïtien. D’ailleurs, le fleuve vertèbre le voyage intérieur d’Emma, la mémoire de ses ancêtres africaines jaillit comme dans sa poésie (Balafres, 1994 ; Et puis parfois quelquefois… 2009) et devient l’eau de rivière qui coule sans cesse dans son œuvre romanesque et poétique. Enfin, notre corpus littéraire est composé de ces ouvrages que l’on considère de référence dans littérature francophone haïtienne contemporaine. Abstract:
The operating dynamic clearance envelope has historically been a sum of estimated dimensional tolerances, sometimes even called “black magic” [1]. These tolerances exist by design within the car and the track, as well as between the wheel flanges and the rail gage face. Field observations of operating clearance have augmented these estimates. Recently a review of such expectations was desired as related to wide and/or tall payloads, with particular respect to train speed and track roughness. This project reexamines the factors affecting car body envelopes, including track curvature and elevation, and car parameters such as length, center of gravity (CG), and side bearing type. A particular goal of this study was to gain a rough understanding of the behavior expected relative to wide loads in the speed range of 30–50 mph. Both static analyses and dynamic negotiation of typical revenue track have been predicted. The NUCARS® multibody simulation software has been used to examine the influence of operating speed and FRA track class on the dynamic envelope. A summary of results is presented along with a discussion of general guidelines and additional considerations.
