Abstract:
This work concerns practical quantitative magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques and their implementation and use in clinical MR systems. First, background information on MR imaging is given, including the physics of the magnetic resonance, relaxation effects and how imaging is accomplished.Subsequently, the first part of this work describes the estimation of the T2 relaxation parameter from fast spin-echo (FSE) data. Various complications are considered, including partial volume and data from multiple receiver coils along with the effects of the timing parameters on the accuracy of T2 e

Our knowledge of stellar magnetic fields relies almost entirely on circular polarization observations, which has historically limited our understanding of the stellar magnetic field topologies. Recently, it has become possible to obtain phase-resolved high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations in all four Stokes parameters for early-type magnetic stars. Interpretation of such observations with the Magnetic Doppler imaging technique has uncovered a new, previously unknown, level of complexity of surface stellar magnetic fields. This thesis describes new methods of evaluating the efficiency of three-phase induction machines using synthetic loading. Synthetic loading causes the induction machine to draw full-load current without the need to connect a mechanical load to the machine's drive shaft. The synthetic loading methods cause the machine to periodically accelerate and decelerate, producing an alternating motor-generator action. This action causes the machine, on average over each synthetic loading cycle, to operate at rated rms current, rated rms voltage and full-load speed, thereby producing rated copper losses,

Abstract:
Birds nest under electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) generated by transmission liners which may affect their reproductive success and/or melatonin governing their circadian and circannual cycles. Over two years, captive kestrels were used to determine whether EMFs affect their plasma melatonin concentrations and their reproductive success. EMFs were equivalent to that which wild kestrels are exposed to while nesting under 735 kV transmission fines, and daily exposure used in the captive study (88--98% time budget) was potentially equivalent to that of wild kestrels (90% X, 80% X).
