The void spaces in colloidal crystals (opals, three-dimensional (3D) close-packed arrays of silica nanospheres) and their replicas are used as templates in the fabrication of new nanostructured materials. 3D ordered nanomeshes and nanosphere arrays are readily obtained by chemical and/or electrochemical methods. Using silica opal templates, metals or polymers are infiltrated into the interstices between the silica nanospheres. Subsequent dissolution of the opals with HF solution produces open 3D mesh structures. Metal (such as Ni, Co, Fe, Pd, Au, Ag, and Cu) and conductive polymer (such

Composite metamaterials are periodic metal-dielectric structures operating at wavelengths larger than the structure period. If properly designed these structures behave as homogeneous media described by effective permittivity and permeability parameters. These effective parameters can be designed to take values in domains that are not available in naturally occurring media; notably it is possible to design composite metamaterials with simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability, or, in other words, with a negative refractive index. As the performance of computers has improved dramatically since the 1990s, many interesting photonic crystal properties have been theoretically and experimentally discovered. For example, the strong coupling between photonic crystal cavities was revealed in the 2000s; many groups have successfully fabricated these cavities and verified strong coupling experimentally using silicon. In this thesis, instead of using silicon, we present new results on photonic crystals made by thin indium tin oxide (ITO) layers. Compared to silicon, ITO is not an ideal material to make a photonic crystal because o

Similarities in the form of the Schrodinger equation that governs the behaviour of electronic wavefunctions, and Maxwell’s equations which govern the behaviour of electromagnetic waves, allow ideas that originated in solid state physics to be easily applied to electromagnetic waves in photonic structures. While electrons moving through a semiconductor experience a periodic variation in charge, in a photonic crystal electromagnetic waves experience a periodic variation in refractive index. This leads to ideas such as bandstructure being applicable to the one and two dimensional photonic crystal

In this paper we outline a new direction in the area of photonic crystals, or photonic band gap materials,one-, two-, or three-dimensional superstructures with periods that are comparable with the wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. The main characteristic of this new class of PCs is the presence of magnetically ordered components. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of such magnetic PCs are discussed.

Recent research has shown that cellulose nanocrystals, CNCs, isolated from natural fibres, can spontaneously self-assemble into architectures that resemble the one producing colouration in plants.
