Ramesh, Maganti V. "Magnetic stripe reader used to collect computer laboratory statistics." Virtual Press, 1990. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/722464.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with interfacing a magnetic stripe reader with an AT&T PC 6300 consisting of a 20 MB hard disk and with collecting laboratory usage statistics. Laboratory usage statistics includes the name and social security number of the student, along with other necessary details. This system replaces all manual modes of entering data, checks for typographical errors, renames the file containing a particular day's data to a file that has the current day's date as its new filename, and keeps track of the number of students for a particular day. This procedure will ensure security of laboratory equipment and can be modified for each computer laboratory on campus. The program results indicate an acceleration of data entry, favorable student response, and an increase in the accuracy of the data recorded.

Smith, Daniel Felix. "Enhanced coding, clock recovery and detection for a magnetic credit card." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2299.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the background, investigation and construction of a system for storing data on the magnetic stripe of a standard three-inch plastic credit in: inch card. Investigation shows that the information storage limit within a 3.375 in by 0.11 in rectangle of the stripe is bounded to about 20 kBytes. Practical issues limit the data storage to around 300 Bytes with a low raw error rate: a four-fold density increase over the standard. Removal of the timing jitter (that is prob-' ably caused by the magnetic medium particle size) would increase the limit to 1500 Bytes with no other system changes. This is enough capacity for either a small digital passport photograph or a digitized signature: making it possible to remove printed versions from the surface of the card. To achieve even these modest gains has required the development of a new variable rate code that is more resilient to timing errors than other codes in its efficiency class. The tabulation of the effects of timing errors required the construction of a new code metric and self-recovering decoders. In addition, a new method of timing recovery, based on the signal 'snatches' has been invented to increase the rapidity with which a Bayesian decoder can track the changing velocity of a hand-swiped card. The timing recovery and Bayesian detector have been integrated into one computation (software) unit that is self-contained and can decode a general class of (d, k) constrained codes. Additionally, the unit has a signal truncation mechanism to alleviate some of the effects of non-linear distortion that are present when a magnetic card is read with a magneto-resistive magnetic sensor that has been driven beyond its bias magnetization. While the storage density is low and the total storage capacity is meagre in comparison with contemporary storage devices, the high density card may still have a niche role to play in society. Nevertheless, in the face of the Smart card its long term outlook is uncertain. However, several areas of coding and detection under short-duration extreme conditions have brought new decoding methods to light. The scope of these methods is not limited just to the credit card.

Amos, Nissim. "Stripe domains formation and their affect on three-dimensional and perpendicular magnetic recording." FIU Digital Commons, 2006. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1052.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, the formation of stripe domains in permalloy (NisoFe20) thin films was investigated mainly utilizing magnetic force microscopy. Stripe domains are a known phenomenon, which reduces the "softness" of magnetic material and introduces a significant source of noise when used in perpendicular magnetic media. For the particular setup mentioned in this report, a critical thickness for stripe domains initiation depended on the sputtering rate, the substrate temperature, and the film thickness. Beyond the stripe domain formation, an increase in the periodicity of highly ordered stripe domains was evident with increasing film thickness. Above a particular thickness, stripe domains periodicity decreased along with magnetic domain randomization. The results led to the inference that the perpendicular anisotropy responsible for the formation of stripe domains originated mainly from magnetostriction.

Abstract:
This is an era of communication technology. This era has faced a lot of innovation in technology sector. Mobile phones were once used for calling or text messaging only, now slowly becoming competitor of computers. The rapid development of hardware, software and operating system of smartphones made it possible to do multiple tasks through the phones. Nowadays, smart phones have powerful operating systems which provide wide range of applications. Smart phones can be interfaced with external hardware also. The payment industry is about to see a drastic change because of these features. People can now pay through their smartphones; they can use payment cards to pay through it etc. But financial transaction is a very sensitive service and security is very crucial here. For financial services, the major security services such as confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, authorization and non-repudiation must be ensured. There are two major types of payment cards, magnetic-stripe based cards and chip based cards. Chip based card provides better security. Magnetic stripe based cards being static, is easy to counterfeit. But the fact that these magnetic stripe cards are still used in many countries, it is necessary to provide a security solution in order to protect customers from treachery. In this thesis, it has been investigated how to secure the mobile payment based on EMV standard. EMV is a chip based payment card. It has strong security features which made skimming or tampering it very hard. But, Magstripe based payments still remained insecure. This thesis paper aims to secure the transaction when paid with magnetic stripe based cards. Several measures have been taken to ensure that major security services are met. In addition, a prototype was developed and tested to demonstrate the practicality of the designed solution. The research results of this paper show that by transacting through the secured mobile payment protocol, customers can avail payment service more securely than traditional magnetic striped card based payments.

Abstract:

Destiny-2000 (Pvt.) Ltd. is a Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) company operating in Bangladesh which has adopted the Binary System of MLM. Binary systems are a multilevel marketing compensation plan which allows distributors to have only two front-line distributors. Everyone else goes beneath those people. The thing that determines whether one can get a commission from a person is not what level he is on, but rather how much purchase volume is generated in the levels between one and that person. Destiny-2000 has more than 130 Net offices (so called Net office which is bigger than Branch office) / Branch offices. As of 4th October 2007, the total number of distributors/ members is 1,322,361.

To make certain level of profit to keep the sales commission and incentive amount attractive for current and prospective distributors the minimum purchase volume for joining the sales network is moderately high by Bangladesh standard.

Destiny-2000 (Pvt.) Ltd. is exploring several options to attract their prospective and current members/ distributors. To this extend, the IPOS developed in this project reduces the one-time purchase burden for prospective members and allows current members to utilize their accumulated points by conveniently purchasing products from a shopping mall.

An Integrated Point of Sales (IPOS) System with Magnetic Stripe Card Reader application has developed based on shopping mall, which will be demonstrated using screen shots.

Garnier, Louis-Charles. "Couches minces en Fe-N élaborées par implantation ionique : propriétés structurales et magnétiques." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019SACLV027/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The alpha'-Fe8N1-x and alpha''-Fe16N2 phases have a high potential of application, because of their uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy and their large saturation magnetization. However, the values announced for these magnetic properties remain a subject of discussion. The research conducted during this PhD thesis was initiated in order to clarify this situation. Sample making consisted mainly of nitrogen ion implantation into alpha-Fe thin films, epitaxially grown on ZnSe/GaAs (001). Among others, the effects of target temperature and fluence on the crystal structure of the samples were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry. The presence of a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was demonstrated in the thin films containing the alpha'-Fe8N1-x and alpha''-Fe16N2 phases. The anisotropy constant was evaluated by vibrating sample magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance. In this research, weak stripe domains were observed by magnetic force microscopy in some Fe-N thin films. These are particularly straight and edge dislocations are found within their periodic structure. Studies were then carried out to precisely control the reorientation of the stripe domains and the displacement of the magnetic dislocations, using a magnetic field

Abstract:
This dissertation work deals with the subject of a company in the area of e-commerce, which represents short-term or long-term plans in controlling the financial relationship toward the outer environment but also inside the company. The problem of possible abuse of credit cards is briefly analysed as well. The impulse for choosing this topic was increasing number of falsification and abusing of credit cards. When this subject is analysed in detail, the problem connected with lack of information on this particular area of crime inevitably appears. Clients of individual banking institutions often do not have even the basic knowledge about the ways their cards could be abused or misused. This is why the question of certain, at least minimal, basic information campaign done by the banks, which are supposed to protect the financial means of their clients. This dissertation work sets its goal in creating the methods of investigation of credit cards abuse not only in the Czech Republic but in the growing system of countries of Schengen Treaty and European Union. The benefit of the work can be seen in the level of theory as well of practice. The theoretical part of the work contains the analysis of the current situation of scientific knowledge in the area of information and communication technology of companies, which is implemented into information systems. Then the advantages and disadvantages connected with this kind of e-commerce are assessed and the specific opportunities for abuse of these media of payment are characterised. The problem sees mainly in writing a specialised publication, which would deal with the problem of abuse and falsification of credit cards and its possible use would be at police academies. Its main part should be the characteristics of particular forms of cards forging and also possible identification of these forgeries. This book could also help in prevention and inform clients of financial institutions about the ways of credit cards abuse. In the practical part, which concentrates on the Czech and foreign market, the author sets the basic premises for realisation of safe business of companies in the Czech Republic and its procedures. Furthermore the reasons of e-commerce abuse in the Czech Republic are analysed and results of quantification research presented. Abstract:
Gravity gradient tensor (GGT) data contains the second derivatives of the Earth’s gravitational potential in three orthogonal directions. GGT data can be measured either using land, airborne, marine or space platforms. In the last two decades, the applications of GGT data in hydrocarbon exploration, mineral exploration and structural geology have increased considerably. This work focuses on developing new interpretation techniques for GGT data as well as pseudo-gravity gradient tensor (PGGT) derived from measured magnetic field. The applications of developed methods are demonstrated on a GGT data set from the Vredefort impact structure, South Africa and a magnetic data set from the Särna area, west central Sweden. The eigenvectors of the symmetric GGT can be used to estimate the position of the causative body as well as its strike direction. For a given measurement point, the eigenvector corresponding to the maximum eigenvalue points approximately toward the center of mass of the source body. For quasi 2D structures, the strike direction of the source can be estimated from the direction of the eigenvectors corresponding to the smallest eigenvalues. The same properties of GGT are valid for the pseudo-gravity gradient tensor (PGGT) derived from magnetic field data assuming that the magnetization direction is known. The analytic signal concept is applied to GGT data in three dimensions. Three analytic signal functions are introduced along x-, y- and z-directions which are called directional analytic signals. The directional analytic signals are homogenous and satisfy Euler’s homogeneity equation. Euler deconvolution of directional analytic signals can be used to locate causative bodies. The structural index of the gravity field is automatically identified from solving three Euler equations derived from the GGT for a set of data points located within a square window with adjustable size. For 2D causative bodies with geometry striking in the y-direction, the measured gxz and gzz components of GGT can be jointly inverted for estimating the parameters of infinite dike and geological contact models. Once the strike direction of 2D causative body is estimated, the measured components can be transformed into the strike coordinate system. The GGT data within a set of square windows for both infinite dike and geological contact models are deconvolved and the best model is chosen based on the smallest data fit error.

This thesis focuses on 2.4GHz 2-port filter , and mainly focus on the effects of magnetic materials to filter frequency, bandwidth, and mid-frequency. In this thesis, the characteristics of magnetic materials, filters and Microstrip Line first are discussed. A Microstrip Line filter is further designed and implemented by simulation tools. The designed filter is fabricated on a 25 mm 20 mm FR4 substrate, and soft magnetic materials are respectively disposed on the bottom of the substrate and on the circuit board. After measuring frequency, bandwidth, and mid-frequency of filter, the comparison and the analysis are carried out. Lastly, the effects of magnetic materials to filter frequency, bandwidth, and mid-frequency are discussed in this thesis. In summary, magnetic materials with different thicknesses are respectively disposed on micro stripe. The measurement results presents that the mid-frequency of the component increases with the decrease of the thickness of the magnetic materials, and vice versa. In addition, it is found that a shift to low frequency becomes more obvious with the increase of the thickness of the magnetic materials.

Abstract:
This study investigated sociotechnical criteria in the design and specification processes of smart card based projects through a case study. The adoption of the innovations in the case study was investigated. The study consisted of three phases: analysis, design and implementation. These were in relation to sociotechnical design criteria and its incorporation into a design methodology. Results from this study indicated that the adoption of the innovations was largely based on the design and specification processes. A formal model for these processes was constructed based on the case study. A recommendation for ongoing research into the refinement of the model presented is suggested. A n extended research project may focus on the model, or on one specific component.

Abstract:
Ni80Fe20 and Ni80Fe20/NiO films and nano-stripes were characterized magnetically through AC and DC susceptibility measurements, and hysteresis loops as a function of field and temperature. While the near-pattern films were characterized in the in-plane configuration only, the nano-stripes were characterized in parallel, transverse and the perpendicular field configurations. The effects of the constrained geometry on the coercivity, exchange bias field, and the superparamagnetic blocking temperature were studied. It was determined that the coercivity, exchange bias field and the superparamagnetic blocking temperature can be controlled, not only by using a patterned media instead of a plane film, but also by the orientation of that pattern.

This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part calculates magnetic intensities of power-contact-wire exposure in Taiwan High Speed Railway (THSR). The new equation derived by Biot-Savart Law is used in this paper. It takes into account of conductor’s size, operating temperature, conductivity of contact wire as well as the skin effect. Thus, it can be accurate to estimate the distribution of magnetic intensities of the conductor. The second part is to simulate the lightning strike on the catenary in THSR. The structure of catenary and grounding systems can be constructed accurately by using CDEGS software packages. The efficiency of arrester location will be estimated when the lightning strike on the return feeder and the contact wire; furthermore, we discuss the phenomenon of back-flashover on the pole and the overhead grounding wire. Based on the simulation results, the improvement policy and method are concluded at the end.

Vashghani, Farahani Alireza. "Numerical Modeling of Wave Propagation in Strip Lines with Gyrotropic Magnetic Substrate and Magnetostaic Waves." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/27607.

Full text
Abstract:
Simulating wave propagation in microstrip lines with Gyrotropic magnetic substrate is considered in this thesis. Since the static internal field distribution has an important effect on the device behavior, accurate determination of the internal fields are considered as well. To avoid the losses at microwave frequencies it is assumed that the magnetic substrate is saturated in the direction of local internal field. An iterative method to obtain the magnetization distribution has been developed. It is applied to a variety of nonlinear nonuniform magnetic material configurations that one may encounter in the design stage, subject to a nonuniform applied field. One of the main characteristics of the proposed iterative method to obtain the static internal field is that the results are supported by a uniqueness theorem in magnetostatics. The series of solutions Mn,Hn, where n is the iteration number, minimize the free Gibbs energy G(M) in sequence. They also satisfy the constitutive equation M = χH at the end of each iteration better than the previous one. Therefore based on the given uniqueness theorem, the unique stable equilibrium state M is determined. To simulate wave propagation in the Gyrotropic magnetic media a new FDTD formulation is proposed. The proposed formulation considers the static part of the electromagnetic field, obtained by using the iterative approach, as parameters and updates the dynamic parts in time. It solves the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in consistency with Maxwell’s equations in time domain. The stability of the initial static field distribution ensures that the superposition of the time varying parts due to the propagating wave will not destabilize the code. Resonances in a cavity filled with YIG are obtained. Wave propagation through a microstrip line with YIG substrate is simulated. Magnetization oscillations around local internal field are visualized. It is proved that the excitation of magnetization precession which is accompanied by the excitation of magnetostatic waves is responsible for the gap in the scattering parameter S12. Key characteristics of the wide microstrip lines are verified in a full wave FDTD simulation. These characteristics are utilized in a variety of nonreciprocal devices like edgemode isolators and phase shifters.

Afzal, Mohammad. "On efficient and adaptive modelling of friction damping in bladed disks." Doctoral thesis, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-202978.

Full text
Abstract:
This work focuses on efficient modelling and adaptive control of friction damping in bladed disks. To efficiently simulate the friction contact, a full-3D time-discrete contact model is reformulated and an analytical expression for the Jacobian matrix is derived that reduces the computation time drastically with respect to the classical finite difference method. The developed numerical solver is applied on bladed disks with shroud contact and the advantage of full-3D contact model compared to a quasi-3D contact model is presented. The developed numerical solver is also applied on bladed disks with strip damper and multiple friction contacts and obtained results are discussed. Furthermore, presence of higher harmonics in the nonlinear contact forces is analyzed and their effect on the excitation of the different nodal diameters of the bladed disk are systematically presented. The main parameters that influence the effectiveness of friction damping in bladed disks are engine excitation order,  contact stiffnesses,  friction coefficient, relative motion at the friction interface and the normal contact load. Due to variation in these parameters during operation, the obtained friction damping in practice may differ from the optimum value. Therefore, to control the normal load adaptively that will lead to an optimum damping in the system despite these variations, use of magnetostrictive actuator is proposed. The magnetostrictive material that develops an internal strain under the influence of an external magnetic field is employed to increase and decrease the normal contact load. A linearized model of the magnetostrictive actuator is used to characterize the magnetoelastic behavior of the actuator.  A nonlinear static contact analysis of the bladed disk reveals that a change of normal load more than 700 N can be achieved using a reasonable size of the actuator. This will give a very good control on friction damping once applied in practice.
