Abstract:
Traditional dual active bridge converters use transformer leakage inductance instead of energy storage inductors for magnetic integration, but this method cannot accurately control the leakage inductance. A phase shift control dual active bridge converter base on integrated magnetics is proposed, in which one transformer and one inductor are integrated in an EE core. The size of the inductance can be accurately controlled. The transformer and the inductor are decoupled and integrated so that the two operating states do not affect each other. The weight and volume of the magnetic elements are reduced accordingly. The finite element analysis and magnetic circuit simulation of the integrated magnetics are carried out. Finally, the integrated magnetics are designed and applied to the 600W prototype to realize bidirectional power transmission and a weight reduction is about 36.24% and a volume reduction is about 35.84%. The correctness of the design is verified by experimental results.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with magnetic force microscopy of soft magnetic nanostructures, mainly NiFe nanowires and thin-film elements such as discs. The thesis covers almost all aspects related to this technique - i.e. from preparation of magnetic probes and magnetic nanowires, through the measurement itself to micromagnetic simulations of the investigated samples. We observed the cores of magnetic vortices, tiny objects, both with commercial and our home-coated probes. Even domain walls in nanowires 50 nm in diameter were captured with this technique. We prepared functional probes with various magnetic coatings: hard magnetic Co, CoCr and soft NiFe. Hard probes give better signal, whereas the soft ones are more suitable for the measurement of soft magnetic structures as they do not influence significantly the imaged sample. Our probes are at least comparable with the standard commercial probes. The simulations are in most cases in a good agreement with the measurement and the theory. Further, we present our preliminary results of the probe-sample interaction modelling, which can be exploited for the simulation of magnetic force microscopy image even in the case of probe induced perturbations of the sample.

This work deals with simple fluxmeter which is able, together with other device, to show hysteresis loop. Hysteresis loop is a graphic expression of dependence of magnetic induction on intensity of magnetic field. Oscilloscope is used to display the hysteresis loop. This device is fully sufficient for the display. The measured objects are solenoids from various kinds of materials with the same shape. The main aim of this work is the design, realization and description of the fluxmeter. The fluxmeter consists of several partial blocks. The first one, on which this work is focused, is signal generator which is able to generace different kinds of signal. The generated signal comes on primary winding of solenoid where a magnetic field on a given intensity rises. An amplifier is used to obtain the sufficient intensity. Next thing this work is focused on is the design of the integrator which is necessary for the correct function of the fluxmeter. As suggested, there is shown the block diagram of linking of individual parts. There are described the measured results at the end of this work.

The main goal of this thesis is a determination of an idle stray losses in induction machine and creation calculation program in MATLAB. The stray losses are caused especially by the eddy currents on the surface of stator and rotor, further by a pulsation of these currents owing to the periodical change of air-gap permeance, magnetic induction in stator and rotor teeth and a differential leakage. Value of stray losses are different of engine construction especially by it are scoring insulated, uninsulated, straight or slant.

Abstract:
This dissertation thesis deals with the computational modelling of the dynamic response of the rotating electrical machine structure on the application of the magnetic forces. Apart from the dynamic response of the ideal symmetrical machine, the influence of the air gap eccentricity on the dynamics response is studied in this work. A basic type of the air gap eccentricity, which is caused by eccentric mounting of the rotor pack on the shaft of the rotor, is considered. The calculations the dependence of the magnetic forces on the time and a misalignment of the rotor pack are performed as first. The computational model of the magnetic field of the rotating electrical machine, which is based on solution of the electromagnetic coupled field analysis by finite element method, is used for this purpose. An analysis of the influence of the unbalanced magnetic pull and the stiffness of some parts of the machine on the modal properties of the machine is performed in the second part of this thesis. A third part of this thesis is focused on the calculation of the dynamic response of the machine during the steady state operation of the machine and the influence of the rotor pack misalignment on the dynamic response is studied. The obtained results showed that the tangential components of the magnetic forces, which act on the stator pack, excite significant torsional vibration of the stator. Besides the vibration of the stator of the machine, the influence of the rotor pack misalignment on the sound power of the machine, vibration of the rotor, loads of rotor bearings and air gap eccentricity is studied in this thesis.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis is concerned with switching of vortex circulation in magnetic nanodisks. The results of micromagnetic simulations of hysteresis loops of individual disks with different degrees of asymmetry are presented. The influence of geometric asymmetry of the disk on the shape of the hysteresis loop is discussed as well as switching of vortex circulation in asymmetric nanodisks by external in-plane magnetic field. Simulations of pairs of magnetostatically coupled nanodisks were carried out for different interdisk distances and degrees of asymmetry. By analysing the results of the simulations, the effects of magnetostatic coupling and the asymmetry on resultant circulation of individual vortices were compared and the range of magnetostatic interaction between nanodisks of given dimensions and asymmetry was estimated. Experimental techniques used for fabrication and measurement of the samples are briefly summarized.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with the switching of spin vortices in magnetic nanodisks. First, the basic concepts of (micro)magnetism are defined and existing theoretical and experimental achievements in the field of switching of the two basic characteristics (chirality and polarity) of magnetic vortex are summarized. Then the principle of dynamic switching of magnetic vortex chirality using in-plane magnetic field pulse with a well defined amplitude and duration is presented. There is no need to use a certain shape of nanodisks or asymmetry in magnetic field distribution. Nanostructures were prepared by the multi-step electron beam lithography and ion beam sputtering. Individual steps of sample preparation and optimization for the magnetization dynamics measurements are described. Finally, the experimental measurements of the dynamic switching of chirality on prepared samples obtained by transmission x-ray microscopy at the synchrotron Advanced Light Source at Berkeley, USA are presented and discussed.

Abstract:
Magnetic bearing is considered for the usage in various industries. This paper investigates vibration of the rotating shaft supported passively by a repulsive-type magnetic bearing. The permanent magnet on the market not only has strong nonlinear force characteristics, but also may have a few percents of non-uniform magnetization characteristics. Also nonlinear force characteristics change as axial displacement of the shaft. Restoring force of a repulsive-type magnetic bearing is evaluated numerically considering the effects of both the axial displacement of the shaft and the magnetical anisotropicities of the inner and outer magnets. The occurrences of not only the linear and nonlinear parametric characteristics, but also the excitational forces for each pattern of magnetical anisotropicities are observed and they are evaluated in terms of the axial displacement. Furthermore, the influence of each magnetical anisotropicity pattern on the occurrences of various resonance phenomena is clarified.

Abstract:
Magnetotactic bacteria endogenously synthesize intracellular magnetic nanoparticles (magnetosomes); however, little is known regarding the genetic regulatory networks that control magnetosome production. In this paper, we explore the genetic response of Magnetospirillum magneticum strain AMB-1 to an applied electromagnetic field as a means to identify genes activated by magnetic stimulation. The expression of magnetosome island, flagellar and cytoskeletal genes was found to be differentially altered by magnetic stimulation at short and long times points. These results indicate previously uncharacterized endogenous gene network modules that could be exploited to engineer magnetic bacteria as magnetic nanomaterial producing-machines through gene regulation.

Abstract:
Many motile unicellular organisms have evolved specialized behaviors for detecting and responding to chemical gradients (chemotaxis) or oxygen (aerotaxis), while magnetotactic bacteria sense magnetic fields to align their direction of movement. Herein we show that Magnetospirillum magneticum (AMB-1) have the ability to sense and respond not only to the direction of magnetic fields of naturally occurring magnitude, but also to local, highly concentrated magnetic field gradients that do not occur in their natural environment. We imposed these gradients through our system integrating Helmholtz coils and permalloy (Ni80Fe20) microstructures. The AMB-1 exhibit three distinct behaviors as they approached gradients near the microstructures—unidirectional, single direction reversal, and double direction reversal. These results indicate previously unknown capabilities of the magnetic sensing systems of AMB-1.

Abstract:
In applications broadly defined for actuation, magnetostrictive materials possess intrinsic rapid response times while providing small and accurate displacements and high-energy efficiency, which are some of the essential parameters for fast control of fuel injector valves for decreased engine emissions and lower fuel consumption. This paper investigates the application of Terfenol-D as a magnetostrictive actuator material for CNG fuel injection actuation. A prototype fuel injector assembly, which includes Terfenol-D as the core actuator material, was modeled in Finite Element Method Magnetics (FEMM) simulation software for 2D magnetics simulation. FEMM was used in order to determine the coil-circuit parameters and the required flux density or applied magnetic field to achieve the desired magnetostrictive strain, and consequently, the injector needle lift. The FEMM magnetic simulation was carried out with four different types of AWG coil wires and four different coil thicknesses of the entire injector assembly in order to evaluate the relationship between the different coil types and thicknesses against the achieved strain or injector lift.

Abstract:
The development of non-destructive sensors is an important direction to pursue to advance approaches, which are less intrusive in their monitoring. One area where significant advances can be made in this field is through using biological inspiration. In this work, we demonstrate the ability of swimming magnetic bacteria, Magnetospirillum magneticum strain AMB-1, to respond to microfabricated magnetic field concentrators. These magnetic bacteria are envisioned as a potential non-destructive sensor approach for detecting defects in submerged metal structures such as ship hulls and bridges. To accomplish this, a pair of Helmholtz coils was built to magnetize microfabricated permalloy (NiFe) structures of different shapes that mimic defects in metals. The NiFe structures were fabricated through photolithography and depositing a thin film of NiFe on a master mold. The substrate was a thin piece of glass (<170μm) that permitted us to observe the interaction of the magnetic bacteria with the NiFe structures that were positioned at the center of the Helmholtz coils. The response of the bacteria around the structures was quantified through analyzing the images of the bacteria in terms of orientation. The bacteria change orientation as they approach the fabricated structures with concentrated fields due to their geometries. In addition, we used magnetic particles to examine the fields and estimated the local magnetic fields exerted on the particles through calculations involving the forces on the beads. We believe that this work is important in a variety of areas from bacterial mechanics to synthetic biology to aqueous non-destructive sensors.

Abstract:
With an overall objective for broad and confident integrity management of the PetroChina Pipeline Company’s pipeline network, we illustrate the impact of a collaborative effort between PetroChina and GE Oil & Gas for the inspection and mitigation of spiral weld anomalies, particularly for new advanced assessments of features oriented along and within the spiral weld. Tool configuration, sensor types and the role of novel data analysis techniques including magnetic vector component measurements, is presented as a set to address a broader variety of spiral weld threats, while ensuring a high level of operational robustness and reliability. This paper describes some of the science behind the art, and describes the fundamentals of MFL magnetics and it’s evolution as an ILI technology into the 21st century for spiral weld anomaly inspection.

Abstract:
Magnetic responsive materials can be used in a variety of applications. For structural applications, the ability to create tunable moduli from relatively soft materials with applied electromagnetic stimuli can be advantageous for light-weight protection. This study investigated magnetorheological composite materials involving carbonyl iron particles (CIP) embedded into two different systems. The first material system was a model cementitious system of CIP and kaolinite clay dispersed in mineral oil. The magnetorheological behaviors were investigated by using parallel plates with an attached magnetic accessory to evaluate deformations up to 1 T. The yield stress of these slurries was measured by using rotational and oscillatory experiments and was found to be controllable based on CIP loading and magnetic field strength with yield stresses ranging from 10 to 104 Pa. The second material system utilized a polystyrene-butadiene rubber solvent-cast films with CIP embedded. The flexible matrix can stiffen and become rigid when an external field is applied. For CIP loadings of 8% and 17% vol %, the storage modulus response for each loading stiffened by 22% and 74%, respectively.
