Abstract:
Traditional dual active bridge converters use transformer leakage inductance instead of energy storage inductors for magnetic integration, but this method cannot accurately control the leakage inductance. A phase shift control dual active bridge converter base on integrated magnetics is proposed, in which one transformer and one inductor are integrated in an EE core. The size of the inductance can be accurately controlled. The transformer and the inductor are decoupled and integrated so that the two operating states do not affect each other. The weight and volume of the magnetic elements are reduced accordingly. The finite element analysis and magnetic circuit simulation of the integrated magnetics are carried out. Finally, the integrated magnetics are designed and applied to the 600W prototype to realize bidirectional power transmission and a weight reduction is about 36.24% and a volume reduction is about 35.84%. The correctness of the design is verified by experimental results.

Abstract:
Paper studies the problems about experimental determining magnetic parameters of nonuniform granular magnetics. It has been noted that the existing shortage of direct and (or) indirect experimental data on the magnetic properties of granular ferromagnetic specimens with different values of a relative length, in particular, has a negative impact on the validity of the requirements and decisions to create and ensure the performance of relevant functional elements, movable operating elements of various equipments and devices. By the example of cylindrical specimens of balls with the range of relative length 1–16 within the framework of effective medium macromodel the dependences of induction, magnetic permeability, susceptibility, magnetization and field intensity have been obtained. It has been shown that in the range of field intensity 9–47 kA/m values of induction and magnetization of investigating specimens increase, that indicates the absence of magnetic saturation of such granular (as opposed to solid) magnetics. And this is the case at almost stable values of magnetic susceptibility and permeability. Obtained results are useful in designing movable operating elements of various equipments and devices.

Full text
Abstract:
Correlation of potential field data to regional geological features within the Lithoprobe southern Canadian Cordillera transect corridor allows characterization of anomaly patterns according to their likely sources. Long-wavelength Bouguer gravity anomalies are attributed to isostatic effects of topography, which in most areas is compensated. Two notable exceptions occur: in the Foreland belt a large positive isostatic anomaly is likely due to mechanical support of topography formed as Cordilleran thrust sheets were emplaced over the thick craton, and on the west coast, isostatic anomalies are related to active subduction. Long-wavelength magnetic anomalies in the Foreland belt are associated with cratonal basement beneath the thrust sheets, and these can be followed westward to near the Omineca belt. A prominent positive magnetic anomaly along the western Coast belt is probably associated with mafic rocks generated during subduction. Elsewhere, relatively short wavelength gravity and magnetic anomalies correlate well with either plutons (both gravity and magnetic), volcanics (primarily magnetics), or faults (magnetics) within the region of accreted terranes.

Abstract:
In recent years, high temperature magnetic structures have been developed and used for inductors and transformers in high temperature applications ranging from power electronics to wireless telemetry systems. Research in the high temperature magnetics field has led to the development of more advanced magnetic structures that can enable diverse applications ranging from regulators to amplifiers, with far reaching implications for the high temperature electronics community. Current high temperature electronics have shown potential in lab and rig tests, but high temperature electronics systems suffer from the relatively limited lifetime of the semiconductor devices themselves. The advanced magnetics discussed in this paper can be designed to have extreme lifetime capabilities even at elevated temperatures, and as such can have an immediate impact on the implementation of true field deployable high temperature electronic systems. Aerospace, power generation, and automotive industries may especially benefit from this technology, as significant advances in health monitoring and active engine control will be enabled by these advanced magnetic structures. A theoretical understanding of these advanced magnetic structures is necessary for initial design and feasibility, while the true development and implementation of this technology depends on state of the art high temperature packaging approaches. By combining high temperature, grain-oriented magnetic materials along with high temperature packaging processes, APEI, Inc. has created advanced high temperature magnetic systems that indicate the technology described in this paper is a viable one, with applications across a wide range of high temperature electronics systems.

Abstract:
AbstractDuring the low optical brightness states of AM Her systems (polars) when accretion has declined to a very low value, the underlying magnetic white dwarf photosphere can be modelled without the complication of thermal bremstrahlung and cyclotron emission from the luminous accretion column. The far ultraviolet spectra can be modelled with high gravity Solar composition photospheres. In this way, I present new temperatures and the first chemical abundance estimates for the white dwarfs in three selected polars from the IUE NEWSIPS archive. For the white dwarf in V834 Cen with Teff = 16,000K, Si/H = 0.1 Solar, C/H = 0.5 Solar, for BY Cam, Teff = 17,000K, Si/H = 0.1, C/H = 5 Solar and for RX J1313-32, Teff = 22,000K, Si/H = 0.1 Solar, C/H = 0.1 Solar. The temperature distribution of 24 white dwarfs in polars with known temperatures above and below the period gap is compared with the distribution of the white dwarf temperatures in dwarf novae during quiescence. In both cases, the magnetic white dwarfs in polars are significantly cooler than the non-magnetics. For all CV white dwarfs, magnetic and non-magnetic with Teff < 12,500K, 91% of the objects (10 out of 11) are magnetics in polars. This suggests that long term accretion heating and cooling of white dwarfs in polars differs from the effects of long term accretion in non-magnetic disk accretors.

Abstract:
The biomineralization of magnetite nanocrystals (called magnetosomes) by magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) has attracted intense interest in biology, geology and materials science due to the precise morphology of the particles, the chain-like assembly and their unique magnetic properties. Great efforts have been recently made in producing transition metal-doped magnetosomes with modified magnetic properties for a range of applications. Despite some successful outcomes, the coordination chemistry and magnetism of such metal-doped magnetosomes still remain largely unknown. Here, we present new evidences from X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) for element- and site-specific magnetic analyses that cobalt is incorporated in the spinel structure of the magnetosomes within Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 through the replacement of Fe 2+ ions by Co 2+ ions in octahedral ( O h ) sites of magnetite. Both XMCD at Fe and Co L 2,3 edges, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy on transmission electron microscopy analyses reveal a heterogeneous distribution of cobalt occurring either in different particles or inside individual particles. Compared with non-doped one, cobalt-doped magnetosome sample has lower Verwey transition temperature and larger magnetic coercivity, related to the amount of doped cobalt. This study also demonstrates that the addition of trace cobalt in the growth medium can significantly improve both the cell growth and the magnetosome formation within M. magneticum AMB-1. Together with the cobalt occupancy within the spinel structure of magnetosomes, this study indicates that MTB may provide a promising biomimetic system for producing chains of metal-doped single-domain magnetite with an appropriate tuning of the magnetic properties for technological and biomedical applications.

In carrying out the calculations, the principle of equivalent currents is used, assuming a uniform distribution of magnetization and its representation by equivalent currents flowing along the domain walls and along the surface. Analytical expressions for the mutual induction of two rectangular conductors with an arbitrary aspect ratio have been obtained. Abstract:
Magnetic particles are currently one of the most important materials in the industrial sector, where they have been widely used for biotechnological and biomedical applications. To investigate the effects of the imposed magnetic field on biomineralization in Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 and to suggest a new approach that enhances formation of magnetosomes, cultures inoculated with either magnetic or nonmagnetic precultures were incubated under a sinusoidal magnetic field or geomagnetic field. The results showed that the sinusoidal magnetic field up-regulated mms6 expression in the cultures inoculated with magnetic cells, and magA, mms6, and mamA expression in the cultures inoculated with nonmagnetic cells. The applied sinusoidal magnetic field could block cell division, which could contribute to a decrease in the OD600 values and an increase in the coefficient of magnetism values of the cultures, which could mean that the percentage of mature magnetosome-containing bacteria was increased. The linearity of magnetosome chains was affected, but the number of magnetic particles in cells was increased when a sinusoidal magnetic field was applied to the cultures. The results imply that the variable intensity and orientation of the sinusoidal magnetic field resulted in magnetic pole conversion in the newly forming magnetic particles, which could affect the formation of magnetic crystals and the arrangement of the adjacent magnetosome.

Abstract:
Soft magnetic moldable composites (SM2Cs) would be ideally suited for the integration of magnetic components in power electronic converters because they can be formed into magnetic cores by low-temperature and pressure-less processing. However, most SM2Cs have low relative magnetic permeability, typically less than 30, and high core-loss densities at switching frequencies over 1 MHz. To improve their magnetic properties, we combine powders of Permalloy and a NiZn ferrite with an acrylic polymer to formulate a paste of SM2C. The paste can be molded and then cured below 200 °C without pressure to form cores with a relative permeability over 35 and a core-loss density at 1 MHz, 30% lower than those of commercial cores. The ease of its processing and high-performance properties makes the SM2C a good candidate material for the integration of power magnetics.

In this study, a testing rig in squeeze was designed and developed with the ability to conduct various tests especially for quasi-static squeezing at different values of magnetic field strength. Finite Element Method Magnetics (FEMM) was utilized to simulate the magnetic field distribution and magnetic flux lines generation from electromagnetic coil to the testing rig. Tests were conducted with two types of MR fluid. MRF-132DG was used to obtain the behaviour of MR fluid, while synthesized epoxy-based MR fluid was used for investigating the magnetic field distribution with regards to particle chains arrangement. Simulation results of the rig design showed that the magnetic flux density was well distributed across the tested materials. Magnetic flux lines were aligned with force direction to perform squeeze tests. Preliminary experimental results showed that stress-strain pattern of MR fluids were in agreement with previous results. The epoxy-based MR samples produced excellent metallographic samples for carbonyl iron particles distributions and particle chain structures investigation.
