Background: Thermal convection is the most convective instability when crystals are produced from a single element like silicon and the thermal instability of a fluid layer heated from below plays an important role in geophysics, oceanography, atmospheric physics, etc. The flow through porous media is of considerable interest for petroleum engineers, for geophysical fluid dynamicists and has importance in chemical technology and industry. Many of the flow problems in fluids with couple-stresses indicate some possible experiments, that could be used for determining the material constants, and t

Bearings are vital mechanical devices that support rotating elements and come in various shapes and sizes. To enhance their performance, modern lubrication methods using MR fluids and a permanent magnet for consistent magnetic fields are proposed. This approach aims to reduce friction, increase efficiency, extend lifespan, and ensure pressure-tight operation. However, the design currently struggles with high radial loads. Further research is needed to explore different carrier fluids, suspended particles, and magnetic material interactions. If perfected, this new method could significantly imp

AbstractThe viscoelastic properties of a magneto-rheological fluid can be variably controlled using a magnetic field. A new measuring method is introduced which is based on oscillatory tests. In contrast to flow curves from experiments at steady shear rate, the new method allows an exact determination of a magneto-rheological fluid’s viscoelastic properties as a function of the preset magnetic field strength. The “Magneto Sweep” is an oscillatory test method, each with constant amplitude and constant frequency while logarithmically increasing the magnetic field strength (Magneto Sweep). For ty

An analogy between magneto-fluid dynamics (MFD/MHD) and geostrophic flow in a rotating frame of reference, including the existence of electromagnetic columns identical to Taylor–Proudman columns, is identified and demonstrated theoretically here. The latter occurs within the limit of large values of a dimensionless group representing the magnetic field number. Such conditions are shown to be easily satisfied in reality. Consequently, the electromagnetic fluid flow subject to these conditions is two dimensional and the streamlines are shown to be identical to the pressure lines, in complete ana

Magneto-rheological fluids are smart fluids displaying flow properties that can be adjusted by the introduction of magnetic fields. Conventional brakes require complex mechanical parts to dissipate energy, they are having more weight, produce less braking torque and the time of response is about 300-500 milliseconds and hence brake distance is high. A Magneto-rheological fluid brake is efficient than conventional braking system in terms of the weight reduction, and response time.
