Abstract:
The optical properties of InAs/GaSb heterostructures under applied magnetic fields are studied in experimental and theoretical detail. The InAs/GaSb system is a type-II "crossed-gap" system, where the valence band edge of GaSb lies higher in energy than the conduction band edge of InAs. This leads to a region of energy above the InAs conduction band where conduction and hole states mix. Thin-layer superlattices remain semiconducting due to confinement effects, but thick-layer superlattices experience charge transfer which leads to intrinsic carrier densities approaching 1012 cm

Abstract:
Ultrafast dynamical processes in magnetic systems have become the subject of intense research during the last two decades, initiated by the pioneering discovery of femtosecond laser-induced demagnetization in nickel. In this thesis, we develop theory for fast and ultrafast magnetization dynamics. In particular, we build relativistic theory to explain the magnetization dynamics observed at short timescales in pump-probe magneto-optical experiments and compute from first-principles the coherent laser-induced magnetization. In the developed relativistic theory, we start from the fundamental Dirac

Abstract:
This dissertation contains studies on several aspects of the media and system in the optical storage. The main subjects that have been examined are magneto-optical (MO) media, phase-change (PC) media and the optical system used for testing and characterizing these media. In the studies of MO media, we examined the thermomagnetic properties of the TbFeCo film and observed the dynamic behavior of its magnetization reversal. We introduced a novel technique to estimate the thermal coefficients, i.e., thermal conductivity and specific heat of each layer in the MO multilayer stack. In the investigat

Abstract:
Nonlinear optical (NLO) processes are optical phenomena involving a nonlinear response to an applied light field. Two kinds of nonlinearities are studied in this dissertation: magnetic-induced second-harmonic generation (MSHG) interacting with surface plasmon, called "nonlinear magnetoplasmonics" (NMP), and the nonlinear index induced by a strong pump beam in Titanium doped sapphire crystal, referred to as population-induced nonlinear index effect.;The fundamentals of the major effects involved are discussed, which include: surface plasmon and its field enhancement effect, MSHG technique and p

Abstract:
Based on the form-invariant of Maxwell’s equations under coordinate transformations, we extend the theoryof transformation optics to transformation magneto-statics, which can design magnets through coordinatetransformations. Some novel DC magnetic field illusions created by magnets (e.g. rescaling magnets, cancelling magnets and overlapping magnets) are designed and verified by numerical simulations. Ourresearch will open a new door to designing magnets and controlling DC magnetic fields.<br><p>QC 20141105</p>
