In this thesis the results of several different experimental techniques are presented. Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy and time-resolved optically pumped scanning optical microscopy measurements were made in Exeter on bi-component anti-dot lattices and permalloy films respectively. Magnetic transmission x-ray microscopy measurements were performed on cobalt nanostructures at the Advanced Light Source at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, USA. Time-resolved Kerr microscopy was used to study bi-component 400nm anti-dot lattices with a 1μm lattice constant.

The aim of this study is to construct a model of coupled magnons and phonons, as well as analysing their frequency spectrum. This study focused on induction of somatic embryogenesis of Magnolia spp. and cultivars utilizing leaf and seed (immature and mature) tissues with attempted micropropagation experiments. In a preliminary experiment, direct embryo regeneration was successful in a single leaf tissue of M. ‘Yellow Bird’. After various micropropagation experiments, microshoot proliferation rates decreased. As a result of minimal leaf material, mature seeds were utilized but had contamination issues. Our approach relies on the Matsubara-Matsuda transformation, which maps a magnonic circuit of a magnetic cluster connected to 1D leads into a hard-core boson system. The transmittance of non-interacting magnons is computed by solving a system of Nc +2 coupled Schrödinger equations (where Nc is the number of sites of the cluster).
