Abstract:
Abstract The "Magnesium Liquid Stable Reagent Set" from Medical Analysis Systems, Inc., is evaluated. The method, which involves Magon dye binding and bichromatic absorbance measurements, was used in a Monarch centrifugal analyzer. Results were compared with those by atomic absorption spectrometry. The calibration curve for the Magon method is linear to 2.5 mmol/L, with a 2-microL sample volume. Analytical recovery of magnesium added to human plasma ranged from 95 to 102%. The working reagent is stable for at least five days at 15 degrees C. At concentrations of 0.54 and 1.20 mmol/L, the respective CVs were 2.15 and 3.60% within batch, and 3.13 and 3.24% between batch. We analyzed 150 clinical samples for magnesium by both methods. Absorbance readings at 520/600 nm rather than 520/690 nm improved the correlation (r = 0.9777 and r = 0.9428, respectively). Calcium, albumin, phosphate, or bilirubin did not significantly interfere.

Abstract:
Background: To compare size of the caesarean scar and residual myometrial thickness (RMT) between continuous single non-interlocking and Babu and Magon technique for uterine closure following primary elective caesarean section (CS).Methods: An observational prospective cohort study was conducted at 6 weeks and 4 months postpartum following primary elective CS. Group A included 25 patients who underwent continuous single layer technique and Group B included 25 patients who underwent Babu and Magon technique for uterine closure. Baseline demographic profile, obstetric score, details of the CS and associated complications were studied. Two-dimensional Transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) measurements of the length, width and depth of the caesarean scar and RMT were compared. Results: Mean age of study population was 29.6 years. Malpresentation (44%) was the most common indication for CS. Mean Bishops score at the time of CS was <4. The duration of surgery (-2.8 min, 37.96 ±5.660min) and estimated amount of blood loss (-51.6 ml, mean 671.20 ±136.208ml) was less in Group A compared to Group B (40.76 ±4.68min, 722.80±132.083ml respectively). The caesarean scar measurements were similar in both groups at both visits. The mean RMT in Group B at 6 weeks and 4 months postpartum (8.05mm±2.06 and 7.10mm±2.04 respectively) was statistically higher than Group A (6.23mm ± 1.76 and 5.36mm ± 1.70 respectively), p=0.002.Conclusions: We conclude that Babu and Magon technique for uterine closure in caesarean section could result in better healing of the scar and probably reduce the adverse outcomes in subsequent pregnancies.

Abstract:
All societies have shared the need to nourish themselves, as prosperity is hindered if there is famine. However, the ancient world isn’t an exception to this because its literature reliably reflects the need to sow crops and feed its people. This is clearly stated in the agricultural manuals which have been preserved. A thousand years separate Hesiod’s Works and Days from the Geoponica by Casiano Baso. In those 1000 years a multitude of agricultural texts were written, some of which are very well known, while others are less well known. Amongs those less fortunate agricultural texts are those which Magon, the Punic, signed in Carthage before the Second Punic War. This essay will focus on this text and its fate

Abstract:
Abstract We have developed a kinetic colorimetric procedure for determination of magnesium in serum. The magnesium-dependent enzyme glycerol kinase is used to phosphorylate glycerol to glycerol 3-phosphate, the latter being oxidized to dihydroxyacetone phosphate and hydrogen peroxide by glycerophosphate oxidase. The generated hydrogen peroxide is then reduced by peroxidase with the simultaneous oxidative coupling of 4-aminoantipyrine and 2-hydroxy-3,5-dichlorobenzenesulfonate, producing a red reaction product with an absorption maximum at 510 nm. The rate of color production is proportional to the concentration of the Mg X ATP complex, which is, in turn, proportional to the magnesium concentration in serum. This method is rapid and precise, avoids the use of expensive instrumentation, is easily automated, and results compare well with those by the Du Pont aca and manual Magon sulfonate methods.

Abstract:
SummaryMagon and colleagues highlight a number of relative strengths and weaknesses very reminiscent of those we have seen over the years in the development of similar services for children and adolescents. It is clear that we all have a lot of work to do to improve our approach to the transition from child to adult services. There was clear evidence that adult services can adapt to manage ADHD, but there is also a clear need for increased upskilling of clinicians in the practical management of medication and other treatments. I disagree with Magon and colleagues about the role of primary care and believe that treatment initiation and ongoing monitoring should, for the time being, remain in secondary care and that, because of the volume of work that will come our way, this will need to become a core rather than specialist task. As with other aspects of psychiatric care, there is a clear role for specialist nurses in delivering a significant proportion of the core care.

Abstract:
Calla (Zantedeschia aethiopica (L.) K. Spreng), is a cut flower which had obtained importance in recent years, but postharvest handling is limited. Thus, in order to know the fluorescein concentration effect and pH of pulse solution on inflorescences calla postharvest, were evaluated in Teotitlan de Flores Magon, Oaxaca-Mexico, four fluorescein concentrations (0, 20, 40 and 60 %, respectively) and two pH levels (acid and alkaline) in a completely randomized design with factorial arrangement, having a total of 24 experimental units, which was established by vase life and calla inflorescence with white spathe color, immersed in a fluorescein solution adjusted as appropriate at acidic or alkaline pH, where response variables were as follows: vase life, water consumption, stem diameter, absorption fluorescein stem base and fluorescein vertical absorption by floral scape. Results indicates the increased vase life is achieved at alkaline pH by fluorescein addition of 20, 40 and 60 %, respectively. Likewise, the higher water consumption is achieved at this pH. From this research, we can conclude fluorescein can affect the calla physiology for increasing vase life.

Abstract:
Abstract This simple, rapid, sensitive fluorometric method for determining magnesium is based on formation of a fluorescent complex of magnesium with 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde salicyloyl-hydrazone in alkaline ethanolic medium (lambda ex = 420 nm, lambda em = 460 nm). The detection limit of the method is 0.05 microgram/L (2 nmol/L) and the relative standard deviations (CVs) are 0.8%, 1.1%, and 2.5% at magnesium concentrations of 50, 5.0, and 0.50 microgram/L, respectively. The standard curve is linear from 0 to 250 micrograms/L (0-10 mumol/L). We investigated the chemistry of the reaction, and have applied the method to determine magnesium in 100-fold-diluted, otherwise untreated serum samples. Within-run CVs for the method were 1.7%, 1.1%, and 1.3% at mean magnesium concentrations of 15.7, 26.4, and 36.2 mg/L, respectively. Day-to-day CVs were 2.7%, and 3.6% at mean magnesium concentrations of 10.1 and 25.5 mg/L, respectively. Samples from 96 hospitalized patients in intensive-care units were analyzed by the proposed method (y) and by an automated colorimetric method involving Magon sulfonate reagent (x). Linear regression analysis of the results yielded: y = 1.01x - 0.04 (r = 0.982, Sxy = 0.90).

Abstract:
Jelen dolgozat nyolc, Magyarországon vadon előforduló pillangósvirágú faj: Lathyrus hirsutus, L. latifolius, L. nissolia, L. vernus, Vicia angustifolia, V. hirsuta, V. sepium és V. tetrasperma keményhéjúságának, valamint spontán, illetve mechanikai szkarifikációt követő csírázásának vizsgálatát tárgyalja. A magtételeket 2016. 06. 18. és 07. 21. között gyűjtöttem a Börzsöny, a Budai-hg. és a Visegrádi-hg. területéről. A mintákat ezután papírzacskókban, szobahőmérsékleten tároltam. A csíráztatási kísérletekre 2016. 09. 21. Hasonló módon a kísérő fajok csoportjában is szignifikánsan alacsonyabb keményhéjúság mutatkozott a gyom és a természetes zavarástűrő fajok együttes csoportjával való összevetésben (P=0,0098).

Abstract:
Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate whether the outcomes of Mason type III radial head fractures (RHFs) treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) were comparable to those of Mason type II RHFs treated by ORIF. Methods: A total of 87 surgically treated RHF patients were reviewed. Their fractures were Mason type II in 39 patients (all treated by ORIF) and Mason type III in 48 patients (40 treated by ORIF, 7 by radial head arthroplasty, and 1 by resection). Although ORIF was preferred for Mason type III RHFs in our series, an arthroplasty was performed when the fracture accompanied severe associated injuries or multiple traumas. Radiological and functional outcomes were evaluated and complications were reviewed. Results: When Mason type II and Mason type III in general were compared, QuickDASH score, a shortened version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score, and forearm rotation were significantly worse in Mason type III. However, when comparing Mason type II and Mason type III treated by ORIF in which the proportion of associated injuries were not significantly different, there was no significant difference in QuickDASH score, range of extension/flexion, or complication rate. Forearm rotations were significantly more limited in Mason type III treated by ORIF (7° for pronation and 7° for supination), and Mason type had an independent effect on forearm rotations in multivariate analysis. Conclusion: ORIF for Mason type III fractures with low level of associated injury can be as good as that for Mason type II fractures, except for less forearm rotation.

We experimentally demonstrate a magnon laser based on the coherent Bose–Einstein condensate of magnons brought into motion by using a time-dependent spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field. We show that the application of a short field pulse results in the formation of a condensate cloud moving with the constant velocity of 930 m/s for the used parameters of the experiment. The number of magnons building the cloud is not changed during the propagation, which is reminiscent of the magnon superfluidity.

Hypoxia induces metabolic alteration in cancer cells by stabilizing hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α (HIF1A)), which regulates the bioenergetic genes of glycolysis and lipid metabolic pathways. However, the target genes of hypoxia-induced metabolic alterations in the prostate remain uncertain. Mitochondrial aconitase (mACON) (ACONM) is an enzyme that is central to carbohydrate and energy metabolism and is responsible for the interconversion of citrate to isocitrate as part of the citric acid cycle in the human prostate. We evaluated the effects of the molecular mechanisms of hypoxia on mACON gene expression in PC-3 and LNCaP human prostate carcinoma cells. Immunoblotting assays revealed that hypoxia modulated mACON and lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) protein expression, while these effects were attenuated when HIF-1α was knocked down. Hypoxia induced fatty acid synthase (FASN) in PC-3 cells while hypoxia blocked FASN gene expression in LNCaP cells after 24-h incubation. Results of real-time RT-qPCR, immunoblotting, and transient gene expression assays revealed that hypoxia treatment or co-transfection with HIF-1α expression vector enhanced gene expression of mACON, implying that hypoxia modulated mACON at the transcriptional level. Hypoxia-induced mACON promoter activity is dependent on the DNA fragment located at −1013 to −842 upstream of the translation initiation site. l-mimosine, an iron chelator, stabilized HIF-1α but downregulated mACON gene expression, suggesting that iron chelation blocked the hypoxia-induced mACON gene expression. These results suggest that hypoxia dysregulates the expressions of LDHA, FASN, and mACON genes, and the hypoxia-induced mACON gene expression is via the HIF-1α-dependent and iron-dependent pathways in prostate carcinoma cells.

Multi magnon interaction with carriers limits the magnon lifetime in FMs compared to AFMs. The longer lifetime, double degeneracy, and higher group velocity of magnons in AFMs generally lead to higher first-order magnon-carrier drag thermopower.

Abstract:
We propose a new mechanism of exciton-magnon absorption in the 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3. It yields the correct description of the relative intensity of the spectral lines in both polarizations E c and E‖c. The magnon density of states has been calculated. The origin of the fine sideband structure in KCuF3 can be explained. The sharp magnon lines, observed in Ref. [1], correspond to the low energy singularities in the magnon density of states.
