Abstract:
AbstractThe recent unearthing of this thirteenth century collection of notes pertaining to the political history of the early Ilkhanate has thrown some light on events and attitudes of that time. Though the manuscript was actually penned by Quṭb al-Dīn Shīrāzī of the Rasadkhana in Maragha, it is not certain that he was the author of the work. Rather than comprising one continuous narrative of events, the manuscript is a collection of notes and observations, occasionally detailed but other times very sketchy. However stamped with the seal of the Raba’ al-Rashidi there is evidence that this text was used selectively as a source for Rashīd al-Din's Jama’-ye Tavarikh. What is particularly interesting is that some of the events that are quoted in Rashid al-Dīn's chronicles are only partially reported and it is obvious that for whatever reasons parts of “Shīrāzī's” accounts are omitted in the re-telling.

Abstract:
Abstract This article explains three major Sufi themes of Maḥmūd Shabistarī’s Gulshan-i rāz as connected by the point-circle metaphor that captures the illusory state of a circle formed by the fast motion of a point. Inspired by Ibn ʿArabī, Shabistarī employs this metaphor in his poetic presentation of the unity of being, the existential state of the human soul, and the bifurcation of religious knowledge and practice into exoteric and esoteric with its implications for the relation between prophethood and sainthood. The article explains these themes mostly in light of Shams al-Dīn Lāhījī’s renowned commentary, Mafātīḥ al-iʿjāz. The analysis of some key verses on the above themes in Shabistarī’s Gulshan-i rāz and the corresponding comments from Lāhījī demonstrates the significance of Akbarian Sufi philosophy in the intellectual and literary life of Persians since late medieval times.

Abstract:
This article reviews the conception of interpretation deviation according to Ḥusayn al-Dhahabī. According to him, many interpreters have certain motives for making deviations in interpreting the Qur’an. Broadly speaking, al-Dhahabī conceptualizes mis-interpretation into two things. First, the interpreters who tend to overtake Isrāiliyāt history excessively, this occurs in the tafsir bi al-ma’thūr. Second, interpreters who interpret verses with incorrect meanings, this happens in tafsir bi al-ra’yi. This second deviation is often done by mufasirs who have certain mazhab background and Sufis due to their use metaphorical language. The findings of this article are, al-Dhahabī considers that there are some deviations in the interpretation of the Quran in the book of al-Kashfu wa al-Bayān an Tafsīr al-Qur’ān by Abū Isḥāq Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Tha’labī al-Naisaburī and al-Kashshāf ‘An Ḥaqā’iq Ghamāmi al-Tanzīl wa ‘Uyūn al-Aqawīl fī Wujūh al-Ta’wīl by Abū al-Qasīm Maḥmūd ibn ‘Umar Ibn Muḥammad Ibn ‘Umar al-Zamakhsharī. Some interpretations of al-Tha’labī are considered to be distorted due to a number of quotes from the history of Isrāiliyāt. On the other hand, some interpretations of al-Zamakhsharī are considered to be distorted because they distort the meaning and bias of the mazhab.

Abstract:
Cette étude s’attache à faire découvrir la dernière histoire de la sagesse antique écrite en terre d’islam, dans le contexte particulier de l’Iran safavide shî‘ite au XVIIe siècle : le Maḥbûb al-qulûb de Quṭb al-Dîn Ashkevarî (mort vers 1680), une encyclopédie des sages allant d’Adam à Mîr Dâmâd, philosophe qui fut probablement le maître d’Ashkevarî. Le premier volet de cette histoire porte sur les sages préislamiques et comprend des portraits bio-doxographiques de nombreux philosophe grecs. Les deux volumes suivants portent respectivement sur les savants de l’islam, parmi lesquels des philosophes et des soufis, et sur les autorités du shî‘isme imâmite, à commencer par les douze imâms. La première partie de ce travail présente Ashkevarî et son œuvre dans le cadre des courants intellectuels et religieux de leur temps, en tant qu’ils les reflètent de manière singulière. La deuxième partie aborde le Maḥbûb al-qulûb de deux points de vue, diachronique puis synchronique : d’abord dans l’histoire de l’histoire de la sagesse en islam, dont Ashkevarî récupère et exploite les matériaux, puis dans la diversité des « jeux de langage » qu’il met en œuvre pour démontrer l’harmonie de la philosophie, du soufisme et du shî‘isme. Enfin, la partie principale de cette étude propose une traduction commentée du préambule, de l’introduction et des trente-deux notices bio-doxographiques composant le premier volet de cette histoire de la sagesse. L’approche shî‘ite et mystique des philosophes antiques, sur lesquels les informations de notre auteur sont fragmentaires et déformées, fait l’objet d’une analyse détaillée montrant qu’elle n’est pas sans retrouver certains caractères authentiques de la philosophie antique. Il s’avère finalement que l’histoire de la philosophie antique est pour l’auteur un moyen de résister aux courants dominants de son temps, d’apporter sa pierre à l’édifice d’une « philosophie shî‘ite » et d’amener le shî‘isme lui-même à reconnaître sa parenté foncière avec la philosophie comme avec le soufisme
This study aims to discover the last “history of ancient wisdom” written in the land of Islam, in the particular context of Safavid Shi’i Iran in the seventeenth century: the Maḥbûb al-qulûb of Quṭb al-Dîn Ashkevarî (dead around 1680), an encyclopaedia of the wise men going from Adam to Mîr Dâmâd, the philosopher who was probably the teacher of Ashkevarî. The first part of the book is devoted to the Pre-islamic sages and includes numerous bio-doxographical notices on Greek philosophers. The next two volumes deal respectively with the scholars of Islam as a whole, including philosophers and Sufi masters, and with the authorities of Imamite Shiism in particular, beginning with the Imâms themselves. The first part of this thesis presents the author and his work within the intellectual and religious currents of their time, in so far as they reflect them in a very singular way. The second part approaches the Maḥbûb al-qulûb from two perspectives, diachronic and synchronic: first, in the history of the history of wisdom in Islam, in which Ashkevarî had found the materials he used, then in the diversity of the language-games that he employed in order to demonstrate the harmony between Philosophy, Sufism and Shi’ism. Finally, the main part of this study provides a translation, with annotation and commentaries, of the first volume in his entirety, including the preamble, the introduction and thirty-two bio-doxographical notices. The Shi’i and mystical approach of the ancient philosophers, on which our author has a fragmentary and distorted information, is the subject of a detailed analysis which shows that this approach is not without finding some genuine features of the ancient philosophy. It finally appears that the history of the wisdom is a way for the author to withstand the prevailing currents of his time, to make his contribution to the building of a “Shi’i philosophy”, and to bring the Shi’ism to recognize its fundamental relationship with Philosophy and Sufism

Le traité des Coniques, rédigé en huit livres par Apollonius de Perge (IIIe-IIe avant J.-C.) est l’une des grandes œuvres des mathématiques grecques qui examine les propriétés fondamentales des sections coniques. Ce traité a connu une longue histoire de transmission. Traduit en arabe au IXe siècle à Bagdad, il a suscité de nouvelles recherches dans divers domaines des mathématiques en langue arabe. De plus, il a été l’objet de plusieurs nouvelles rédactions sous la forme d’abrégés, rectifications et recensions, dont l’objectif était de faciliter l’accès aux Coniques et d’enrichir le texte initial.L’un de ces écrits auxquels ont donné lieu les Coniques en arabe a été réalisé par le mathématicien et philosophe du XIIIe siècle, Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (1201 – 1274) qui a également fourni des recensions d’autres traités mathématiques. Jusqu’à présent, la Recension des Coniques d’al-Ṭūsī n’avait pas fait l’objet d’étude appropriée. Une telle étude permet d’estimer dans quelle mesure le texte initial de la traduction arabe des Coniques a été modifié et enrichi au fil du temps. De plus, il nous éclaire sur la destinée réservée à ce traité dans le monde arabo-musulman. Cette thèse se propose de remplir une partie de cette tâche. Elle se divise en quatre chapitres. Le chapitre I traite du problème de transmission des Coniques vers la langue arabe ainsi que des applications des coniques dans les mathématiques de langue arabes. Le chapitre II est consacré à la recension d’al-Ṭūsī, le problème de son attribution, ses sources, etc. Les chapitres III et IV contiennent la première édition critique du premier livre de la Recension des Coniques par al-Ṭūsī, accompagnée de la traduction française et de commentaires mathématiques et historiques.L’examen du texte d’al-Ṭūsī nous a montré que cette recension comporte des termes techniques, des formulations et des figures géométriques empruntés au Résumé des Coniques de l’un de ses prédécesseurs, Maḥmūd Ibn Qāsim al-Iṣfahānī (XIIe siècle). Pour cette raison, nous avons également entrepris une étude du livre I du Résumé des Coniques. Cette étude, qui figure en annexe dans cette thèse, comprend la première édition critique du livre I de ce traité, ainsi que la traduction française et les commentaires mathématiques d’une partie du livre I consacrée à l’explication du nouveau lexique forgé par l’auteur
The treatise of Conics, written in eight Books by Apollonius of Perga (III-II BC) is one of the greatest Greek mathematical works, which examines the fundamental properties of conic sections. This treatise has a long history of transmission. The Conics was translated into Arabic in 9th century in Bagdad, and it contributed to the new research in several fields of mathematics in Islamic world. Moreover, several new redactions of the Conics – entitled abridgement, rectification and recension – were composed in order to facilitate the access to this treatise and to enrich the initial text.One of the Arabic writings to which gave rise the Conics was due to Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (1201 – 1274), the mathematician and philosopher of 13th century, who has provided also the new recensions of other mathematical treatises. Until now, the Recension of the Conics by al-Ṭūsī had been never the subject of a separate study. Such a study enables us to estimate the extent to which the initial Arabic translation of the Conics had been enriching over the time. Furthermore, it sheds light on the destiny of the transmission of this treatise into the medieval Islamic world. The aim of this thesis is to partially fill this gap. It is divided into four chapters. Chapter I treat the problem of the transmission of the Conics to the Arabic language as well as the applications of conics in the mathematics written in the Arabic language. Chapter II is devoted to the recension of the Conics by al-Ṭūsī, the problem of its attribution, its sources, etc. Chapters III and IV present the first critical edition of the first Book of the Recension of the Conics by al-Ṭūsī, accompanying the French translation and the mathematical and historical analysis.During our research on the recension of al-Ṭūsī, we found out that it contains technical terms, some formulations and geometrical figures borrowed from one of his predecessors, Maḥmūd ibn Qāsim al-Iṣfahānī (12th century). For this reason, we have extended our research to the study of the redaction of al-Iṣfahānī, namely The Summery of the Conics. The results of this study are presented as an Appendix, which includes the first critical edition of the first Book of this treatise, as well as the French translation and the mathematical commentaries of a part of this Book, devoted to the explanation of the new vocabulary coined by the author
