Full text
Abstract:
The survival of lambs born to ewes at their first (maiden) lambing is generally lower than for those born to ewes which have previously lambed, and poor maternal behaviour is a contributing factor. This study examined whether pre-lambing exposure of maiden ewes to multiparous lambing ewes would improve the survival of lambs born to maiden ewes. Pregnant maiden (n = 333, 2 years of age) Merino ewes were allocated to three replicates of two treatments: exposed – maidens were grazed with multiparous Merino ewes (n = 111, 5 or 7 years of age), which were due to lamb during the 2 weeks before the start of maiden lambing, with mature ewes comprising 50% of the mob size; and non-exposed – maiden ewes grazed in paddocks without mature ewes. The total number of ewes per paddock (74), number of ewes per hectare (14.0) and paddock size were the same in both treatments. The number of lambs born per ewe was similar between treatments, indicating a similar proportion of multiple births. The proportion survival of lambs from maiden ewes exposed to adults (0.53) tended to be lower (P = 0.091) than the survival of lambs born to maiden ewes grazing alone (0.61). The number of lambs marked per ewe lambing was similar (P = 0.284) in exposed (0.71) compared with non-exposed (0.78) maidens. The survival of lambs from maiden ewes was not improved by lambing in the same paddock with adults, even where the adults had largely completed lambing before the maidens commenced.

Full text
Abstract:
The present paper studies the iconography of dead maidens depicted on a red-figured funerary loutrophoros and six white-ground lekythoi in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, all of them dating to the 5th century BC. The scenes painted on the vases under consideration are representative of the iconography employed by Classical Athenian vase-painters for the depiction of deceased maidens, parthenoi. Dead maidens are not frequently seen on funerary clay loutrophoroi, but mostly appear in psychopompoi, tomb visit, and prothesis scenes of white lekythoi, where their premature death before marriage is often emphasized by the fact that they are shown as brides through the use of wedding iconography elements. They are never portrayed being carried by Hypnos and Thanatos, but are only taken to Hades by Hermes and Charon. Even though the loutrophoros is generally considered to be the symbol par excellence of death before marriage, it is not indispensable to the depiction of maiden figures on white lekythoi. However, in scenes on white lekythoi showing a loutrophoros-hydria set up over the tomb as a sema with the deceased maiden portrayed in close proximity to it, special emphasis is placed on the loutrophoros as a symbol of untimely death and eternal virginity.

Abstract In 2000-2003, studies were conducted in the Felin Experimental Station at the University of Agriculture in Lublin to evaluate the impact of BA + GA3 2.2% (Arbolin 036 SL) and BA + GA4+7 2.2% and 3.75% (Promalin 3.6 SL) in the form of lanolin paste on the increase of the number of lateral shoots in maiden apple trees of the ‘Šampion’ and ‘Jonica’ cultivars. The growth regulators were found to have a beneficial effect on the branching ability of the maidens of the studied cultivars. ‘Jonica’ showed weaker apical dominance than ‘Šampion’. Young ‘Jonica’ trees had more lateral shoots of greater length than the ‘Šampion’ maidens.

Abstract:
AbstractA well-known relief pithos in the Louvre (CA 795) shows Perseus confronting a Gorgon whose human torso terminates in the body of a horse. Her equine features have proven difficult to explain, and earlier discussions of the scene have appealed to lost narratives, seventh-century artistic conventions and broad symbolic associations between Gorgons and horses. Focusing on her combination of equine and maidenly characteristics, this article interprets Medusa's unusual form with reference to a series of ancient Greek metaphors connecting maidens, horses and Gorgons. It argues that recognizing the metaphorical logic of the image allows us to understand Medusa's form as a sympathetic comment upon her death, which has parallels in the sacrifices of maidens in Greek art and literature.

Abstract:
Cultivation of sweet cherry trees is growing in popularity in Poland thus there is an increasing demand for good quality nursery material. The growth of maiden sweet cherry trees of ‘Vanda’ depending on three rootstocks was compared within three years of the nursery experiment. Also the nutritional status as well as photosynthetic activity of maiden trees after the use of four foliar preparations were in the scope of interest. On the basis of the size of the trunk diameter and weight of maiden sweet cherry tree fresh mass as well as on the basis of dry mass of leaves, the strongest vigor of growth was observed on Colt rootstock, contrary to the vigor on GiSeLa 5 rootstock, in which it was the weakest. Maidens produced on Colt rootstock formed more lateral shoots in comparison to other rootstocks. After foliar fertilization, maiden sweet cherry trees growing on Colt rootstock did not show better parameters of growth, except for Maxi Grow Excel preparation that caused better results of growth. The influence of preparations used on the content of macro and microelements was differentiated. A positive effect of all preparations was noted as far as gas exchange parameters were concerned, especially in the case of Maxi Grow Excel.

Abstract:
Objective: To evaluate the impact of the application of the FASTHUG-MAIDENS mnemonic by clinical pharmacists to optimize critically ill patients’ pharmacotherapy. Methods: Cross-sectional study performed on an adult intensive care unit of an University Hospital, between august and november 2019, where 155 patients were followed by three clinical pharmacists during hospital stay. Patients who stayed less than 24 hours in the hospital or whose stay was during weekends or holidays were excluded. The interventions were performed together with a multidisciplinary team using FASTHUG-MAIDENS, as well as technical analysis of medical prescription and patients’ clinical evaluation. The clinical evaluation included analysis of laboratory tests, nursing records and medical prescription, all registered in an institutional spreadsheet. The pharmaceutical interventions were registered in the pharmaceutical section of both physic and electronic medical records, and the data were later evaluated, classified, and submitted to descriptive analytical analysis. Results: 1.145 pharmaceutical interventions were performed, with an acceptance rate of 99,3%. The number of pharmaceutical interventions were increased by 104,4% with the application of the FASTHUG-MAIDENS mnemonic, compared to the period before the research. The main interventions performed were: inclusion of a drug (25,2%), exclusion of a drug (17,9%), dose adjustment (12,2%), change of the administration timetable to avoid intravenous incompatibility (11,4%), inclusion of infusion rate (7,3%), dilution adequacy (5,8%), inclusion of reconstitution (3,5%), microbiological culture request (3,4%), drug interaction monitoring (2,7%), adequacy of infusion rate (2,6%) and others (7,4%).Pharmaceutical interventions showed clinical (96,9%), preventive (99,3%) and economic (21,6%) impact. Conclusion: The application of the FASTHUG-MAIDENS mnemonic extended the pharmaceutical care to critically ill patients, enabling an accurate evaluation of the pharmacotherapy, clinically impacting critical patient care and reducing errors and adverse drug events.

The beginning of system of female education in Russia was laid in 1764 by Catherine the Great, who founded the first Institute for Noble Maidens. The task of the Institute education was training of future teachers, educated mothers, governesses. The article shows for the first time how in that institutions, earlier than in other educational schools, deliberately increased the status of reading: there were replenished libraries, subscribed magazines, developed the lists of educational materials and fiction. In Russia the reading as a form of intellectual entertainment, the book as means of self-education was an integral part of the everyday culture, as well as thanks to graduates from Institute for Noble Maidens.

Abstract:
When Jesus confronts the man possessed by demons in the eighth chapter of Luke, a collective, alien voice issues from the familiar human form: "And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him" (Luke 8:30). Dostoevskii's novel The Devils (Besy, 1871-1873), to which the continuation of this passage serves as epigraph, makes use of the rich metaphor of possession in many aspects: as madness, as ideological enslavement, as national destiny.

Abstract:
At the turn of the century, “Japan” was being imagined for the American public in a variety of ways. Sidney McCall, wife of Hegelian Ernest Fenollosa and close friend of Romanticist Lafcadio Hearn, sought a way to incorporate “Japan” into Fenollosa's broader Idealist arch while simultaneously preserving the titillation of Hearn's “ghostly tales.” By so doing, McCall attempted to reconcile divided notions of “femininity” in early Japanology (and American discourse at large). She utilized the form of the novel itself to work systematically through the schism between “feminine mystique” and “maternal feminism”; this uncertainty was resolved, for McCall, in her Idealist fictions from “Japan.”

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the characteristics of the educational system of the Smolny Institute for noble maidens, the first educational institution for women in Russia, which laid the foundation for female education in the country. The pedagogical essence of this educational system is to create environment which enables to develop the personality of each of the subjects of this system. Despite major differences in the Institute educational system at different stages of development of the educational institution, one can talk of a holistic educational system of the institution. This is evidenced by the presence of systematically important connections which ensured the continuity of pedagogical influences at all stages of the existence of the educational institution, as well as by the development of originally established traditions. Special features and development stages of the institute educational system, indicating its different states, are considered. During the long period of its functioning, the Smolny institute went through periods of rise and fall, of heyday and decline, of different approaches to the organization of educational process (from a rigid sociocentric approach to a more humane homocentric one). But it always remained a major center of female education in the country, where interesting pedagogical ideas were given rise to, original pedagogical experience was formed. Many of its graduates in no small way contributed to the development of the cause of education in the country. Special attention is paid to the renewal of the Smolny institute educational system during the time when K. D. Ushinsky worked there as a class inspector. The article emphasizes that the Smolny Institute established itself as a phenomenon due to the fact that there was developed an original educational system, which changed throughout more than 150 years, yet abided by the initially set goal of training highly competent, «perfect» citizens of their Motherland, true Smolyan women.
