Abstract:
Contrary to popular belief, mail-order marriage is not left behind in history. With technological advancement, globalism, and capitalism, mail-order relationships in the modern world have become a capitalist venture through the form of a global marriage market with Internet websites (Starr & Adams, 2016, pp. 968-969). Currently, the common practice operates internationally in between different nations and ethnicities (Merriman, 2012, p. 87). However, the mail-order bride market is distinct from the regular intercultural dating business: a clear power structure exists between the grooms (capitalist along with mail-order marriage companies) and the brides (commodities). This paper examines how this dating market serves Western men (I will be using this term interchangeably with American men) to reinforce traditional Western masculine hegemony and ethnic dominance in a global setting (Starr & Adams, 2016, p. 972).

Abstract:
This paper examines available literature of the practice of the mail-order bride industry, both within historical and contemporary contexts, with particular emphasis on Filipina women. With thousands of women immigrating to Western countries annually through the unregulated market of the marriage-order industry, scholars offer differing perspectives on the legitimacy of the arrangements. This paper analyzes the arguments made by scholars that the practice is inherently abusive, subjecting women to human trafficking. It also considers the arguments that mail-order marriages can be an empowering opportunity, citing the economic and social advantages afforded by immigrating to Western countries. Lastly, through available research which conducted interviews with mail-order brides, this paper examines women’s firsthand experiences and thoughts regarding the industry and their satisfaction within their marriages.

Abstract:
Sine Plambech: ’’Mail Order Brides’’ in Northwestern Jutland: Transnational Marriages in the Global Care Economy Women from Asia are increasingly traversing borders to marry men in the Western world. This article presents ethnographic research focused on Thai women married to Danish men. The existing discourse portrays these Thai “mail order brides“ through a discourse of victimization. First, they are commonly portrayed as being uprooted and permanently alienated from Thailand. Second, they are seen as merely victims of Third World poverty. A third portrayal sees them as a contraband commodity in illegal human trafficking. Finally, they are seen as victims of simple male domination. This raises two socio-political problems. First, the discourse does not necessarily represent the Thai bride’s self-perception. Second, it fails to recognize how this group of women contributes to the global economy, as remittances from Asian women have become a vital part of the economies of various Asian countries of emigration. This article argues that transnational brides are not merely powerless victims, but global economic actors on a structurally confined stage. While broader global processes are crucial background factors, migration is a concrete action carried out by specific persons in a specific context. Therefore this article analyses the personal motives underlying these Thai women’s migration to Denmark. These motives include embracing socio-cultural family values while paradoxically rejecting more traditional Thai gender values.

Abstract:
This article examines the extent to which the Indonesian government has made efforts in handling the Mail-Order Brides (MOB) Indonesia–China as part of trafficking in persons. Indonesia has been a country of origin, transit, and destination for victims over the years, thereby making this topic crucial. This study adopted a qualitative descriptive analysis, whilst data collection techniques were library research and online research. This article found that the Indonesian government had been effective in solving the MOB cases. The efforts, undertaken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Directorate General of Immigration, and the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta, had contributed significantly to the case study–where nearly 80% of the total cases reported between 2015 and 2019 were successfully resolved. In so doing, the Indonesian government also faced challenges; one of which was the lack of cooperation from the Chinese government– differences in views in the MOB cases. The results of this study include recommendations for public awareness campaigns for MOB, integration of transnational crime subjects in the education curriculum, and so forth. In this thesis, I explore two works from Mail Order Brides/M.O.B., A Public Message for Your Private Life (1998) and Mail Order Bride of Frankenstein (2003), that take into account the histories and identities produced within Filipino/a American Communities. I use Sarita Echavez See and Emily Noelle Ignacio's theories on parody to analyze the performative aspects of M.O.B's artworks. According to See and Ignacio, parody can be utilized as a tool to simultaneously form solidarity within Filipino American communities. By examining these ideas, I argue that M.O.B. performs appropriated representations of their ethnic and assimilated cultures by using parody to critique and problematize often-misrepresented individual and cultural identities.

Abstract:
This research explored the stereotypical representations, images, and expectations surrounding the relationships of Filipino women and American men. Within the context of the mail-order bride phenomenon, Filipino women have been largely depicted as victims of racialized and gendered representations of mail-order bride agencies. Similarly, romantic relationships between Filipino women and American men are reduced to mere business at which romantic love and desire is absent. However, such depictions fail to acknowledge other factors at play with Filipino women’s intention to seek relationship with Western men. Within the Filipino society, Western men are constructed as better marriage partners in contrast to that of Filipino men. Findings revealed that the desire to seek relationships with one another is driven by their desire based on the preconceptions they perceive one another to possess.

Abstract:
Online international introduction sites that offer romance tours to American men in search of a foreign bride are an important and rapidly growing component of the internet dating industry; the number of these agencies in the U.S. tripled from two hundred to six hundred in the past 10 years. Previous scholars have examined the so-called ‘mail order bride’ industry in order to demonstrate that the women involved are agents and not victims. Many scholars have also highlighted the importance of race in shaping American men’s desires in one particular region or country. My dissertation provides an important addition to the literature surrounding romance tourism by including participants from all three major regions associated with romance tourism: Eastern Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia. I collected the data for the dissertation by becoming a participant observer of a romance tour in Ukraine, Colombia, and the Philippines. I argue that romance tourism is an important example of the global intimate, and the ways in which globalized processes are created and sustained through everyday intimate emotions and interactions. By examining the ways in which the emotions of desire, disgust, and anxiety influence individual romance tour participant’s constructions of racialized hierarchies, the links between individual emotions and global systems are revealed. The concept of the global intimate challenges the hierarchy of scale that places the body, the home, and the intimate on a much lower level than the scale of the global or the national, and at the same time challenges the binary that divides the individual from the global. Through highlighting the different emotional negotiations that are constantly occurring in the romance tour industry, I highlight the important ways in which individual emotions and affects influence global processes on a large scale and vice versa.

Pennington, Laura Anne. "Marriage Migration, Citizenship, and Vulnerability: The International Marriage Broker Regulation Act (IMBRA)." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32035.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2005, following the deaths of several marriage migrants known as â mail-order bridesâ , the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act was created. Designed to regulate the international matchmaking industry and provide women with the information to make informed, safe decisions about their future partnership in an attempt to decrease instances of violence, this law was the result of an increase in awareness, collaboration between interested parties, and incorporation into a broader bill. For years, marriage brokers had operated using stereotypes about submissive foreign women to attract customers, recently bringing business onto the internet and creating websites marketing women as purchases. Five years after the passage of the law, however, the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act fails to address six key vulnerabilities faced by female marriage migrants. For this reason, women immigrating to the United States to marry a spouse after introduction through a marriage broker still face an increased likelihood of domestic violence and even death. The author concludes with a discussion about future improvements in both legislation and operation to address violence against immigrant women.

Guseva, Olena. "Women like us : a critical and creative examination of a ‘mail-order bride’ experience." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29965.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines issues related to “mail-order brides” as these pertain to my mother who emigrated from Ukraine as a “mail-order bride” in August of 1998. This thesis incorporates both critical and creative analyze of the topic of “mail-order brides” and international dating industries. The problematic term “mail-order bride” implies a specific ‘type’ of woman who is often represented as domestic, subservient and affectionate. The consumers of the “mail-order” industry are fed images that are essentializations of the Eastern European woman and her habits. By ‘selling’ traditional values to Western male consumers, mail-order sites reinforce stereotypes associated with Eastern European women and create an unrealistic image of a hyper-feminine woman that is problematic to both “mail-order brides” and to the men that seek them. In this critical and creative essay, I examine my mother’s letters as testaments to the unrealistic expectations placed on her through the stereotypes created by the “mail-order” industries. This thesis also examines the so-called “mail-order brides” in light of Western feminism and problematizes the perceived lack of agency associated with “mail-order brides.” Furthermore, I will analyze the commoditization of the female body as is seen through the international dating agencies. This thesis argues that it is through the capitalist mentality projected by the “mail-order” agencies that the female body becomes trafficable and accessible to the Western male consumer.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the population of women voluntarily entering the United States via arranged, often through the Internet, marriages. A congressional report (Immigration and Naturalization Services 2006) on “International Matchmaking Organizations” reports that the number of immigrants coming to the United States with a “K-1 fiancée visa”, the temporary visa status used to have a nonnative individual enter the United States for the purpose of marriage, to be growing rapidly. Of these individuals, 79% are women, referred to in both government data collection and sociological literature using the century old moniker of “mail order brides”. Through first-hand experience, over a period of 20 years teaching and acting as an administrator for English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, I have found this population of women, International Mail Order Brides (IMOBs), to present significant English language and literacy needs. Demonstrating inconsistent attendance in ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, they exhibit low-level English language fluency skills. This study of six International Mail Order Brides, all of whom live in rural settings within Pennsylvania, emanated from these observations. Participants were located through their attendance in community based, adult ESL programs. Research conducted used the case study method offered the participants the opportunity to share the lifelong progression of their biliteracies. Each of the narratives is transcribed in the words of the participant to assure the critical element of authenticity. The biliterate lives presented through this restorying is interpreted using Hornberger’s Continua of Biliteracy theory in order to identify the multidimensional International Mail Order Bride biliteracy. Analysis revealed five of the six participants to be monolingual, with no agency given to their L1. All developed their biliteracies successively, living currently with the L2 in the majority power position. Five of the six IMOBs function at the less powerful oral-vernacular end of the Continua, with few literate abilities. The value of shared life stories formulates an in-depth representation of how the specific life choice of this population drives the need for highly contextualized English language opportunities, providing clear data to guide the field of Second Language Literacy in creating a pedagogical response.

AbstractIn order to explore the regularity of alignment and stress variation of long-span corrugated steel web (CSW) continuous beam bridge during cantilever casting construction was taken as the engineering background. Based on numerical simulation, the sensitivity of parameters of alignment and stress of the main beam is carried out on cast-in-place section weight, modulus of elasticity and temperature gradient. The results show that the obvious influence of cast-in-situ section weight and temperature gradient on the alignment and stress is the key control parameters, while modulus of elasticity is the secondary control parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor concrete dense and environmental temperature change in real time during construction, closure at a suitable temperature. Correct construction errors in time, ensure structural safety and smooth alignment.

Abstract:
AbstractNavigating through locks is one of the most challenging tasks that skippers have to perform in inland navigation. Typical dimensions of a ship (width = 11.45 m) and a lock (width = 12 m) result in an error margin of less than 30 cm to the left and to the right of the ship when navigating within a lock chamber. Typical inland vessels on European waters have a length of 82 to 186 m. The wheel house on cargo vessels is located close to the stern of the vessel. This leads to low visibility of the bow in the lock chamber. In order to cope with this issue, a deck hand monitors the bow and announces distances to the skipper via radio. The quality of this information depends on the deck hand’s ability to judge distances correctly and is prone to error. This highly demanding maneuver needs to be performed up to 15 times per day. Each lock passage can take up to 30 minutes. The research project SciPPPer aims at automating this complex navigational task. The German acronym SciPPPer stands for Schleusenassistenzsystem basierend auf PPP und VDES für die Binnenschifffahrt – lock assistant system based on PPP and VDES for inland navigation. The idea is to fully automate the navigation into and out of a lock using high-precision GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) with PPP (precise point positioning) correction data which is transmitted from shore to ship using VDES (VHF Data Exchange System), an extension to AIS (Automatic Identification System). This absolute measurement data is complemented by relative measurement data using LiDAR and automotive RADAR and fused with inertial measurement data delivered by a mechanical gyro system. Apart from the challenge of precisely measuring the position and orientation of the vessel within the lock chamber, the control task poses an interesting problem as well. This contribution introduces both, the measuring and the control problem. However, the focus lies on the results of the control performance that was achieved on a full-bridge simulator as well as during real-world trials. A full-bridge simulator was used in order to test the control strategy and its algorithms safely. A number of different actuator configurations were investigated. Typical inland cargo vessels use one or two propellers with Kort nozzle and a twin rudder behind each propeller and a 360° turnable bow thruster. Typical inland passenger vessels use several (2–4) 360° turnable rudder propellers as main propulsion as well as a 360° turnable bow thruster or a classical tunnel thruster which can only apply forces to starboard or portside. These typical configurations were examined by simulation. The real-world trials were performed on a passenger vessel with three rudder propellers as main propulsion as well as a classical tunnel bow thruster acting left and right. This contribution presents the results of the simulator study as well as the real-world trials in terms of control performance. It explains specific challenges due to the navigation within an extremely confined space. The contribution concludes with lessons learned as well as an outlook focusing on the potential of the introduction of such a system to the inland navigation market.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Maker Movement, which has for years received much attention, still presents many economic, social and educational implications that are ripe for investigation. The movement’s community of practice can be defined as “a knowledge-building community” (Scardamalia and Bereiter, The Cambridge handbook of the learning sciences, pp 97–115, 2006) as cited in Martin (Martin, J Pre-Coll Eng Educ Res (J-PEER) 5(1):4, 36 2015). This apt definition, which refers to the hyper complex, connected society that engendered it, opens up new possibilities in the field of education. The main goal of this reflective paper is linked to the creation of a theoretical framework that could explain and support the movement’s background. This will lead to an analysis of three different pedagogical models (Célestin Freinet, Loris Malaguzzi, Bruno Munari) that have much in common with the Maker Movement. We focused our study on the most positive traits of makers: social inclusion, democracy and the failure-positive/collaborative approach. Considering the importance of the European Union’s Key Competences, our aim was to create a bridge between the “maker mindset” (Dougherty, Design, make, play, pp 9, 25–29, 2013) and these competences, in order to consider the possibility of introducing the movement into the national curriculum. The point of contact between the two can be the basis for promoting active citizenship, grounded, naturally, in the Key Competences. Subsequently, to test our analysis in the first part of our reflection, we look at the experience of DENSA (Developing Edutainment for New Skills and Attitudes) Coop. Soc.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 argues that the video and performance art project Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride, by the Filipina American video and performance art ensemble the Mail Order Brides / M.O.B., reconfigures the discourse of Filipina mail-order brides as abject figures. Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride undermines the heteronormativity and masculinism of Filipina/o American cultural nationalism while also critiquing the homonationalism of LGBT cultural politics in the United States. Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride is situated within a broader US political context of queer neoliberalism, in which gay marriage is a sign of homonational belonging. A queer neoliberal logic commodifies the labor of transnational Filipina bodies, revealing the inherent racism of the mainstream LGBT movement’s inability to address issues of race, migration, and labor.

Abstract:
<p>The main channel project of Ningbo Zhoushan Port is a large-scale bridge connecting island project in the eastern sea of China, the total length of the main line is 28 km and Yushan branch bridge 8.8km. In order to deal with the complex sea environmental conditions, the project pays attention to the industrialization of bridge design, and carries out design standardization, component factory-manufacturing and construction assembling. The whole line pursues standardization designing in the span layout and type of cross section of box girder, and the superstructure of non-navigable channel bridge is mainly composed of segment prefabricated and whole-span pre-casted box girder. In order to improve the connection problem of pre-casted pier, the substructure of non-channel bridge adopts pre-casted thin-wall hollow pier with internal wet-joining new structure. In order to effectively control the long-term bending problem of large-span continuous rigid concrete structure bridge, the north channel bridge with main span of 260m adopts the mixed structure of concrete box girder with segment prefabrication and steel box girder with the length of 90m in the middle part. In order to reduces the impact on the villages along the line, the column, and covering beam and T beams applied new technology of standardized design, component prefabrication and integrated erection. Meanwhile, the UHPC + HPC prefabricated combination T beam structure first used in the ramp B of the Yandun interchange bridge.</p>

Abstract:
<p>The main navigable bridge is a three-tower steel box girder cable-stayed bridge with a span of 78+187+2×550+187+78 m. The design reference wind speed is 42.3m/s. The main navigation span can navigate 100,000-ton ships. In order to improve the overall stiffness of the bridge under unbalanced live loads, some measures are studied, such as the restraint conditions, the stiffness of the tower, the stiffness of the beam, the number of stay cables in the side and central tower, and so on. Through the wind tunnel test research, the control measures for the buffeting performance of the double cantilever are clarified. According to the IABSE vessel collision model, the vessel collision force is determined. A double-layer collision protection structure is used to protect the bridge and reduce vessel collision damage. In order to improve the structural durability, high- performance epoxy steel bars are used in the splash zone. The cable-anchor beams of the towers are made of weathering steel. Maintenance vehicles are installed in the main beam which is 1.63 km. Through the above measures, the structural performance is guaranteed.</p>

Abstract:
<p>This paper deals with the history of suspension bridge rehabilitation through case studies made and proposes the concept to strengthen the main cable without its replacement. Since modern-type suspension bridges appeared in 1850s, over 70 suspension bridges had been built all over the world by 1970s. Many of these suspension bridges confront degradation over the years. In order to assess the main deterioration of suspension bridges, historically core concepts enhancing the modern suspension bridges were categorized as key components of suspension bridges and their characteristics, and as a consequence, how the assessment should be made for the rehabilitation. Although major case studies for the rehabilitation showed to repair decks and suspenders, several cases were made to rehabilitate main cables which are the backbone of suspension bridges. A newly proposed method to increase the strength of main cables without their replacement is presented with demonstrating its effectiveness throughout the analysis. This paper aids in facilitating the health assessment and determining associated rehabilitation techniques for suspension bridges.</p>

Abstract:
<p>Composite beam bridges have been widely used in the main girders of cable-stayed bridges for their excellent performance. In order to study how to apply steel concrete composite girders and concrete π girders in single-tower cable-stayed bridges, the study explores the design technology of hybrid composite beam single-tower cable-stayed bridges based on Shouying Huaihe River Spe- cial Bridge of Hezhou Expressway. Through finite element analysis, a series of parametric analysis of the overall performance of the hybrid composite beam single-tower cable-stayed bridge is car- ried out to study the structural characteristics and analyze the rationality and economy of the structure. The result shows that the hybrid composite beam is a kind of single-tower cable-stayed bridge structure that can well adapt to the asymmetric span distribution with a large proportion of side and middle spans. The research results can provide support and guidance for the background engineering construction and help promote the application of the structural form.</p>

Abstract:
<p>In order to complete the connection between the A15 and A12 highways in the Dutch region Gelderland, a bridge complex over the river Pannerdensch Kanaal will be constructed. The bridge complex consists of a main span over the river summer bed, and two approach bridges over the eastern and western floodplains. This contribution presents the design vision of the bridge complex that focusses on an inclusive design connecting the local residents, the fauna and the flora. The design of the approach bridge is presented in more detail in this paper. The design of the main span is presented in another paper.</p><p>The eastern and western approach bridges only have expansion joints at their end supports and hence have a free expansion length of approximately 600m and 1200m. They consist of a longitudinally and transversally post-tensioned concrete deck with approximate span of 36m and width of 30m. The deck is supported by 54 piers in total with two bearings per pier, of which one transversally guided and one free sliding. Furthermore, the structure contains a steel bicycle bridge that is suspended below the deck and passes through the two supports of the V-shaped piers. The slender piers, part of them in an old sand mining pit, are subjected to important second order effects and, due to their V-shape, high tensile stresses that are controlled by an additional steel tie between both supports.</p><p>Due to its uncommon characteristics, the multi-span approach bridge is characterized by the complex interaction between superstructure and substructure. The large width of the bridge, allowing large eccentric traffic loads, and the V-shaped piers create important transversal interaction forces between deck and piers. The large free expansion length in combination with a plan curvature also creates transversal forces due to temperature effects and results in large longitudinal loads on the fixed points.</p>

Abstract:
<p>The use of structural health monitoring for a reliable characterization of modal properties is becoming a common solution when dealing with the safety assessment of existing bridges, in order to capture samples of the experimental response of the “real structure”. Such non-destructive test approach has also the advantage to be able to capture also potential criticalities that can change the real behavior of the structure with respect to the “as-built” configuration. The present work illustrates the results of experimental measurements carried out on the Carbonifera viaduct, a steel-concrete composite bridge located in the metropolitan area of Venice, northeastern Italy. These tests were conducted in order to determine main natural frequencies, mode shapes, modal damping ratios and to further calibrate an ad-hoc finite element model subsequently used in order to perform a structural assessment of the bridge against traffic and seismic loads.</p>

Abstract:
<p>External events represent the most common causes of bridge failure which could indicate distress, partial or total collapse (failure of all substantial parts of a bridge). One of the main environmental factors are earthquakes, which have a high impact on bridges due to irregularities presented in both substructure and superstructure and vulnerabilities acquired by the codes used in its design. This article presents a framework to obtain the reliability index of a bridge under seismic events, using response surface method and first order reliability method, based on random variables that affect the structure capacity (pushover analysis) and the seismic loads (peak ground acceleration). The bridge reliability of the case study is updated using visual inspection techniques. Results indicate that the vulnerable zone on the bridge is its shortest pier and the failure could occur due to high shear concentration in the hinge at the bottom of the pier.</p>

Abstract:
Machinery Diagnostic Services (further referred as MDS) has been invited to evaluate the possibility of monitoring the intensity of induced vibration on the gas piping mounted under a road traffic bridge. In fact, the main scope is to evaluate, via the amplitude level, the risks connected to the structural integrity of the system, strictly connected to the possible condition degradation of the bridge (and in general of the structures where the piping is anchored) which can lead to interruption of the continuity of gas delivery. The objective is obtaining the information regarding the vibrational responses, the natural frequencies, and the related modal shapes, in order to optimize the distribution of permanent sensors which will be form the condition monitoring system to be installed in the immediate future. It has to be noted that Customer does not own the bridges, but their piping structures are strongly dependent from bridges stabilities. It has also been highlighted that in 2018, during a rainstorm on 14 August, a 210-metre section of ponte Morandi viaduct collapsed and tragically 43 people died.

Hurtado López, Carlos. The Euro Experience: A Review of the Euro Crisis, Policy Issues, Issues Going Forward and Policy Implications for Latin America. Inter-American Development Bank, June 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008419.

Full text
Abstract:
This policy brief reviews the experience of the countries under the Euro currency, focusing on those that have been under significant pressure in recent years- Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, referred to as "emerging" economies. At first they experienced stable growth and converged to the most advanced countries, but subsequent adjustment has proven elusive due to macroeconomic conditions, worsening structural deficiencies, and incomplete integration. The conditions for the survival of the Euro zone are complex and still far from fulfillment. While Latin America has recently experienced a similar period of stable growth, there is no room for complacency. The main lesson from Europe's experience is that Latin America must take advantage of the current context of growth, stability and optimism in order to carry out much-needed reforms that will leave countries adequately prepared to face a downturn in the world economy.

Mitchel, Olsen, and Fletcher. L52072 Literature Review - Formaldehyde Formation Mechanisms in Large Bore Natural Gas Engines. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), March 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010950.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous work has shown that the only hazardous air pollutant of significance in the emissions from large natural gas engines is formaldehyde. In consequence, a detailed literature review was carried out in order to assess the current state of knowledge about formaldehyde formation mechanisms and evaluate its applicability to gas engines. Of particular interest was the identification of locations, events and operating conditions in large-bore engines which favor formaldehyde formation or its destruction. To complete the review and create this report, available technical databases were searched, abstracts were reviewed, and key publications were identified and then read thoroughly. The report has four main sections: first, a brief introduction and problem statement; second, an extensive review of possible formaldehyde formation mechanisms and paths to engine-out emissions; third, an evaluation of factors which may affect formaldehyde emissions from large-bore gas engines; and finally a statement of conclusions and suggestions for further work.

Abstract:
In February 2021, a group from MASTS, Environmental Interactions of Marine Renewables (EIMR) and Marine Scotland began exploring options for a joint event on marine energy science and policy development. The original concept was to bridge the gap between events that each group would normally arrange ‘in person’ and the virtual world in which we were all currently existing. Encouraged by the online support and experience available from MASTS, a steering group decided to arrange a workshop. In order to straddle our interests, the starting point was the capacity of the North Sea to deliver renewable energy. We wanted to include emerging science and the timing of the review of Scotland’s National Marine Plan provided an excellent context. We sought to deliver a wide range of content but encourage participant conversation. We aimed for a range of speakers delivering 7-minute recorded talks. Talks included findings from funded research, ongoing projects, and some emerging thinking across the science policy interface for marine planning. Marine energy was interpreted in the widest of senses, but the main focus was on offshore wind in UK waters, with particular detail about Scotland.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims at answering the following questions: How do specialization patterns look like in member countries of Mercosur and how have they evolved over time? How do concentration patterns look like and how have they evolved over time? What are the main determinants of locational patterns? Did Mercosur have an impact on location of economic activities? What are the consequences for the smaller countries? Do we see production clusters? We analyse specialization, concentration, and locational patterns in Mercosur using production value data for the period 1971-1998. We identify the determinants of those patterns during the period 1985-1998 using econometric techniques. In addition, we calculate intraindustry trade statistics within Mercosur and with the Rest of the World for the period 1986-2001 in order to investigate the formation of clusters and uncover their determinants. We complement this analysis with a brief description of production developments in border regions with the purpose of determining whether this phenomenon has a specific spatial dimension. Finally, we draw some conclusions about the implications for smaller countries within the bloc and some lessons for upcoming trade initiatives such as a deepening of integration within the region, the establishment of FTAA, and a free trade agreement with the European Union.

Chrobak, Bartlomiej. Narrowing the achievement gaps in higher education with social-belonging intervention : A systematic review. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, March 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2023.3.0021.

Full text
Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Summary - Social-belonging intervention belongs to the family of wise psychological interventions (for exhaustive review of wise interventions, see Walton & Crum, 2021). The latter notion was introduced by Walton (2014), for whom a wise intervention is “a precise tool, often instantiated in a brief exercise, to change a specific psychological process in a real-world setting” (p. 74). In line with this definition, a social-belonging intervention is a brief interactive exercise for freshman students conveying a message according to which worries and doubts about their social belonging in higher education are normal and they tend to dispel over time (Walton & Brady, 2021). This intervention seems to enhance academic outcomes of underrepresented or minority students in higher education (Walton & Brady, 2021), thus helping at narrowing (or closing) the achievement gaps. The main aim of this review is to examine in a rigorous way, using the systematic review methodology, quantitative studies addressing the question of the efficiency of social-belonging intervention in narrowing the achievement gaps in higher education (Research Question 1). Moreover, this review will also focus on analyzing other outcomes (educational and health), which may be impacted and enhanced by this intervention (Research Question 2). Finally, our goal is to investigate how to implement this intervention in the most efficient way (Research Question 3). Answers to these research questions may be a valuable resource to psychologists and educators willing to apply an evidence-based intervention in order to close or to narrow an achievement gap, as well as to psychologists and educational researchers working on higher education.

Wilcox. PR-015-09200-R01A Compressor and Pump Station Incidents and Technology Gaps. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), October 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010956.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2008, Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) took the initiative to identify the main causes of reportable incidents in compressor and pump stations. Data was gathered from several sources including the United States Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Canadas National Energy Board, and PRCI member companies. More than 1600 incidents were reviewed over an 18 year period (1990 to 2008). The incidents were evaluated based on their frequency of occurrence and the consequences of the incidents (injury, ignition, environmental impact, etc). In pump stations, pump seals, valves out of sequence due to operator error, and gasket and bolting were identified as the highest impact incidents types. In compressor stations, the three highest impact incident types were found to be pipe components, natural forces (hurricanes and lightning strikes), and gaskets and bolting. During the 2008 project, research roadmaps were developed based on the results of the incident data review. In the process of defining the research projects, a brief review into the available technology for the incidents types was conducted. It was quickly found that a more detailed state-of-the-art review was needed to accurately identify the research required for several of the incident areas. Therefore, a state-of-the-art review of the three highest impact incidents in pump and compressor stations was proposed. The work documented in this paper is the state-of-the-art review of these incidents. In the PRCI CPS 9-1 (2008) project, it was found that more information was needed on several of the incidents in order to fully define the root cause. Therefore, the first task of the PRCI CPS 9-1 (2009) effort was to attempt to gather more information on the top three impact incident types. Thirty-two pipeline companies were contacted and additional information was provided for approximately 25% of the incidents. From the review of this additional and past data, several focus areas were identified for the state-of-the-art reviews. The state-of-the-art studies included a survey of the current technology, identification of common failure mechanisms, and review of strategies to reduce incident occurrences. These studies are reviewed in detail in the appendices of this document. From the state-of-the-art studies and the incident review, technology gaps were identified. Technology gaps are areas where new innovative technologies or applications are required to address current inspection/maintenance strategies for a particular piece of equipment or task. Technology gaps were only identified for pump seals. These gaps included the inability for pump seals to survive process upset conditions, inability to correctly identify and model expected loads and operating conditions for pump seal selection, and lack of installed seal inspection or life prediction methods except through leakage detection. All other incident types (valves out of sequence due to operator error, gaskets and bolting, pipe components, and natural forces) have adequate technology to address the incident occurrences. In the majority of the incidents, even though the technologies exist, it may not be used or applied correctly. Several recommendations were made for future work. These included work that a company may consider conducting internally to reduce the occurrence of incidents and future research. The recommendations for future work for operators and research for industry are summarized in a list below. Research items included on the research roadmaps are indicated with an asterisk.
