Abstract:
Despite the growing popularity of the volunteer movement in Russia, there is a clear gap between the number of participants in this movement, and the number of people potentially ready to participate in it. Meanwhile, the accumulation of data on volunteering can contribute to the development of programs to involve more and more people. This might have a special significance for young people - not only for the development of special personal qualities, but also for professional life preparation. The article describes the main areas of study of volunteerism, formulated in the form of questions about the subject: "Who?" - about the features of the volunteers, "Why?" - about the motivational factors of meaning, "How?" - about the practical aspects of this type of activity. The possible areas for further research include determining the specificity of voluntary activity, the accumulation of data on Russian regions, looking at the work and its meaning through the eyes of its members (volunteers and recipients of assistance), as well as the development of respect for the culture of volunteer resources in general.

Abstract:
This thesis has examined Main Battle Tank (MBT) crew activities and workload. The aims were to provide a package of workload and fatigue indicators for use during field exercises; to document the 'in tank' activities of MBT crew; to provide a task analysis which includes an indication of task demands, and to draw general conclusions concerning the practical assessment of human workload. It is in two volumes. The first volume, which is unclassified, gives the background, presents reviews of relevant literature on task analysis and workload and gives an overview of the thesis. It then documents the studies and experiments which were carried out in order to refine the methodology, and to select a battery of measures of workload and fatigue which were suitable for use on military exercises.

Xie, Haiyan. "The inhibitory activities of constituents of the three main categorites in ginkgo biloba towards amyloidi-ß peptide aggregation." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2014. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/68.

Full text
Abstract:
The standard extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves (EGb761) is being clinically used in Europe for the treatment of impaired cerebral function in primary degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer disease (AD) and vascular dementia. The abnormal production and aggregation of amyloid β peptide (Aβ) and the deposition of fibrils in the brain is considered as key steps in the onset of AD. For this reason, the inhibition of Aβ aggregation and the destabilization of preformed fibrils have been identified as effective approaches for the prevention and treatment of AD. EGb761 mainly contains three categories of components: flavonol glycosides (FGs), terpene trilactones (TTLs), and catechins and procyanidins. Among them, only TTLs have been evaluated for the inhibition towards Aβ aggregation, and the effects were much weaker than that of the extract. It was suggested that EGb761 should contain several other compounds that are responsible for this activity. In the current study, we have conducted a comprehensive investigation of the generally chemical and bioactive properties of the compounds belonging to all three of the major component categories present in EGb761. We aimed to identify the compounds responsible for the inhibitory activity exhibited by EGb761 towards Aβ42 aggregation and the destabilization of preformed fibrils. The results can be summarized as follows. Seven major FGs were isolated from EGb761 and determined to be quercetin 3-O-α-(6′′′-p-coumaroyl glucopyranosyl-β-1,2-rhamnopyranoside (1), kaempferol 3-O-α-(6′′′-p-coumaroyl glucopyranosyl-β-1,2-rhamnopyranoside) (2), quercetin 3-O-β-D-rutinoside (3), quercetin 3-O-α-L-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)-(1,2)-rhamnopyranoside (4), isorhamnetin 3-O-β-D-rutinoside (5), kaempferol 3-O-β-D-rutinoside (6), and kaempferol 3-O-α-L-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)-(1,2)-rhamnopyranoside (7) by structural analysis. Four catechins and two procyanidins were also found in EGb761 and identified as catechin, epicatechin, gallocatechin, epigallocatechin, procyanidins B1 and B3. The inhibitory activities of these compounds and four major TTLs (i.e., ginkgolides A, B, and C and bilobalide) towards Aβ42 aggregation were evaluated using a thioflavin T fluorescence assay. The results revealed that catechins and procyanidins compounds exhibited significant inhibitory activities with IC50 values in the range of 3-16 μM, and those of the procyanidins were stronger. Three of the FGs (FG1, FG3 and FG4) showed moderate inhibitory activities, with IC50 values in the range of 30-70 μM, whereas the other four FGs (i.e., FG2, FG5, FG6 and FG7) and the four TTLs showed much weaker activity. The catechins and procyanidins also showed potent activities towards the destabilization of preformed Aβ fibrils. Based on these results, we established several structure-activity relationships (SARs) that specific structural groups, as well as the number and position of hydroxyl groups, the linking sequences of the sugar moieties, and the three dimensional conformations of the compounds were important to their inhibitory activity. We also established quantitative analysis of all these tested compounds and simultaneously determined their contents in the Ginkgo extracts. In addition, total FGs, total TTLs, and total catechins and procyanidins were prepared by column chromatography. Similarly, they were also quantitatively analyzed and their inhibitory activities towards Aβ42 aggregation were evaluated. The results showed that total catechins and procyanidins exerted much stronger activity than total FGs and total TTLs. Comprehensive assessment of their activities and contents in the extract indicated that the contribution of the FGs was almost twice that of the catechins and procyanidins, which indicated that they played an important role in the effect of the extract. TTLs alone could barely contribute to the EGb’ effect and probably exerted their influence through the synergistic effect with FGs, which was speculated from the study. In conclusion, the current study has shown that the catechins and procyanidins present in EGb761 possessed potent ability to inhibit Aβ aggregation and destabilize preformed fibrils. FGs made a significant contribution to EGb761’s inhibitory activity towards Aβ aggregation and its neuroprotective effects. Furthermore, the SAR study provide evidences for further research and development of Ginkgo products and drugs designed to target Aβ aggregation or the destabilization of preformed fibrils. Despite their low contents in EGb761 and related products, catechins and procyanidins, and even proanthocyanidins deserve further study because of their potent effects towards Aβ aggregation and the destabilization of preformed fibrils, which could have a significant impact on the quality control of Ginkgo leaves and Ginkgo products.

Abstract:
The key factor in risk management process is the risk acceptance decision. However, it is not an easy task since different approaches can be adopted. In Portugal, it is unknown how companies decide in relation to the risk acceptance of the occupational risks and on the need to implement risk reduction measures. Building on these facts, this work aims to analyze how Portuguese organizations make their decisions concerning occupational accident risk and the main constraints to the decision process, and to identify the most appropriate approach to be applied. The questionnaire Risk Decision Analysis was developed and applied on a sample of Portuguese Occupational Health & Safety Professionals. The results show that the type of OHS services was the main factor that influenced the risk analysis activities and the type of risk assessment, namely in relation to quantitative risk assessments: the in-house OHS personnel use more quantitative risk assessments than the external consultants. Both qualitative and quantitative criteria need to be considered, but quantitative criteria are preferred in relation to qualitative criteria. In relation to risk measures used, the risk matrix is the most used to evaluate the risks of particular activities and risk rates for evaluating the safety performance of organizations. The study also shows that ALARP principle is the best approach to be applied in decision-making process on occupational risk. In general, the study emphasized the need of guidelines that helps in acceptance criteria formulation.

Hart, Carl. Vibration survey of Room 47 with a laser doppler vibrometer : Main Laboratory Basement, U.S. Army ERDC-CRREL. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/38919.

Abstract:
Plans are underway to create an acousto-optic laboratory on the campus of the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. For this purpose, existing space in the basement of the Main Laboratory will be renovated. Demanding measurement techniques, such as interferometry, require a sufficiently quiet vibration environment (i.e., low vibration levels). As such, characterization of existing vibration conditions is necessary to determine vibration isolation requirements so that highly sensitive measurement activities are feasible. To this end, existing vibro-acoustic conditions were briefly surveyed in Room 47, a part of the future laboratory. The survey measured ambient noise and ambient vertical floor vibrations. The ambient vibration environment was characterized according to generic velocity criteria (VC), which are one-third octave band vibration limits. At the time of the survey, the ambient vibration environment fell under a VC-A designation, where the tolerance limit is 2000 μin/s across all one-third octave bands. Under this condition, highly sensitive measurement activities are feasible on a vibration-isolated working surface. The conclusion of this report provides isolation efficiency requirements that satisfy VC-E limits (125 μin/s), which are necessary for interferometric measurements.

Abstract:
. In this article, based on the analysis of the main elements of the activities of officials of border agencies in the conduct of administrative investigation in cases of administrative offenses, its general and specific characteristics are highlighted, which together allowed the author to propose a definition of the investigated type of activity. Not only the current legal regulation in the field of application of the administrative investigation specified in Article 28.7 of the Administrative Code, but also the inconsistency of the emerging scientific-categorical apparatus of the affected subject area are subjected to critical consideration.

Sabatelle, Jason, Adonis Caramintzos, and Jamie McCall. Small Business COVID-19 Lending Programs: Fostering Social Capital and Financial Stability. Carolina Small Business Development Fund, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46712/covid.lending.

Full text
Abstract:
In times of crisis, investment in entrepreneurial ventures tends to decline. Early data suggest the decline in small business investments due to the pandemic will be historic in scope and depth. Community development lending practices aim to sustain small firms until they can resume their normal course of business. Affordable financing provides capital injections into small businesses which can help to cushion against COVID-19 induced economic shocks. Using Carolina Small Business Development Fund’s lending data as a case study, this analysis considers the effect of COVID-19 response programs. These activities are oriented towards creating a “social safety net” of Main Street businesses that boost social capital development, community trust, and financial stability. We believe the findings are likely generalizable to lending activities by other community development financial institutions.

Beverinotti, Javier, Gustavo Canavire-Bacarreza, and Alejandro Puerta. Understanding the Growth of the Middle Class in Bolivia. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003407.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper we aim to disentangle how sectoral economic growth affects the growth of the middle class size using state-level data of Bolivia from 2000 to 2017, a country with limited data, breaking the three main economic activities into subsectors aiming for more specific results. By means of a Bayesian hierarchical longitudinal model for small samples, we find that the commerce and services sectors have the biggest impact, even though mining and agriculture also have a positive effect on the increase of the middle class in Bolivia. Our results also suggest that both formality and public social investment have a significant, yet smaller, effect.

Almasri, Shaddin. A Matter of Cash and Resilience: Lessons from a review of Oxfam's incentive-based volunteering programmes in Za'atari camp. Oxfam, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2020.7727.

Full text
Abstract:
With limited job opportunities available to Syrian refugees living in Za’atari camp in Jordan, incentive-based volunteering (IBV) programmes remain one of the main sources of income for thousands of camp residents. A previous Effectiveness Review conducted by Oxfam on household income in Za’atari camp found that those engaged in IBV activities reported a 28% increase in their wealth between 2014 and 2018, as opposed to a 4% decline for those who were not engaged. Although IBV programmes are not a substitute for sustainable job opportunities, they play a vital role in injecting cash into the camp’s economy and improving the living conditions of Syrian refugees, and even more so during the lockdown due to COVID-19.

Abstract:
The prodPhD project aims to address the challenging problem of introducing entrepreneurship training in PhD programmes regardless of discipline. The prodPhD project will create the necessary teaching methodologies and the platform for applying them. The project consists of a consortium of four organizations from across Europe. The main objective of the prodPhD project is to implement innovative social network-based methodologies for teaching and learning entrepreneurship in PhD programmes. The multidisciplinary teaching and learning methodologies will enable entrepreneurship education to be introduced into any PhD programme, providing students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to engage in entrepreneurial activities. The methodology will be conceived to develop experiential knowledge, involving academics, entrepreneurship experts, and mentors in its development and implementation. Besides, the exchange of experience, competences, and approaches facilitated by social networking will pave the way to crowdsourcing new ideas, improving training methodologies, and stimulating academics’ entrepreneurial skills.

Al-Qadi, Imad, Hasan Ozer, Mouna Krami Senhaji, et al. A Life-Cycle Methodology for Energy Use by In-Place Pavement Recycling Techniques. Illinois Center for Transportation, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/20-018.

Full text
Abstract:
Worldwide interest in using recycled materials in flexible pavements as an alternative to virgin materials has increased significantly over the past few decades. Therefore, recycling has been utilized in pavement maintenance and rehabilitation activities. Three types of in-place recycling technologies have been introduced since the late 70s: hot in-place recycling, cold in-place recycling, and full-depth reclamation. The main objectives of this project are to develop a framework and a life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to evaluate maintenance and rehabilitation treatments, specifically in-place recycling and conventional paving methods, and develop a LCA tool utilizing Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to help local and state highway agencies evaluate environmental benefits and tradeoffs of in-place recycling techniques as compared to conventional rehabilitation methods at each life-cycle stage from the material extraction to the end of life. The ultimate outcome of this study is the development of a framework and a user-friendly LCA tool that assesses the environmental impact of a wide range of pavement treatments, including in-place recycling, conventional methods, and surface treatments. The developed tool provides pavement industry practitioners, consultants, and agencies the opportunity to complement their projects’ economic and social assessment with the environmental impacts quantification. In addition, the tool presents the main factors that impact produced emissions and energy consumed at every stage of the pavement life cycle due to treatments. The tool provides detailed information such as fuel usage analysis of in-place recycling based on field data.

Mengak, Michael T. Wildlife Translocation. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2018.7210105.ws.

Full text
Abstract:
Many people enjoy wildlife. Nationwide, Americans spend over $144 billion annually on fishing, hunting, and wildlife-watching activities. However, wildlife is not always welcome in or near homes, buildings, or other property and can cause significant damage or health and safety issues. Many people who experience a wildlife conflict prefer to resolve the issue without harming the offending animal. Of the many options available (i.e., habitat modification, exclusion, repellents) for addressing nuisance wildlife problems, translocation—capturing and moving—of the offending animal is often perceived to be effective. However, trapping and translocating wild animals is rarely legal nor is it considered a viable solution by wildlife professionals for resolving most nuisance wildlife problems. Reasons to avoid translocating nuisance wildlife include legal restrictions, disease concerns, liability issues associated with injuries or damage caused by a translocated animal, stress to the animal, homing behavior, and risk of death to the animal. Translocation is appropriate in some situations such as re-establishing endangered species, enhancing genetic diversity, and stocking species in formerly occupied habitats. The main focus of this publication, however, is to address nuisance wildlife issues that may be commonly encountered by homeowners and nuisance wildlife control professionals.
