Marinace, F. Paul (Frank Paul). "A marine research lab in Maine : building coastal identity." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/68299.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1995.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 119-120).
If the design of a building originates from the place in which it is built, from the social traditions of that place, and from building traditions which are specific to local materials and climate, then it will project an identity different from that of a building with the same program in a different culture. The question I pose is how far can an approach of regionalism get us toward an architecture which reinforces the particular qualities of life in a specific culture. What are its benefits, what are its limits? The program is a marine research laboratory located on a tidal river in mid-coast Maine. I have chosen the Maine coast as a case study for its strength of individuality and relative isolation from suburban influences. Civilization is marching steadily onward, and Maine will be one of the next places to deal with the cultural entropy which has enveloped the rest of the Nation. Rather than employ historical quotation or imitation to derive a basis for new design, I distill existing properties such as site orientation, inhabitation of topography, use of materials, building systems, and social organization to their most fundamental principles. From these principles, a design strategy can be developed in terms of a vocabulary of forms, materials, organizations, and orientation which will evoke a sense of place consistent with the regional identity, and can be reinterpreted for new programs and technologies which are necessitated by today's building requirements. Over time, new possibilities regarding construction materials, glass technology, insulation, heating, air conditioning and water systems have replaced traditional methods of construction common to the vernacular architecture of the region. While many things have changed, certain fundamental relationships between the building and local environment have not, such as wind strength and direction, vegetation, availability of sunlight, durability of local materials, and local geology and resources, which can still be valuable in the design of a building for this area. This project, therefore, focuses on understanding what is really important about a particular site or situation, and reinventing a formal expression for that idea which complements the existing experience, while proposing a new way of understanding its qualities.

Evanno, Philippe. "La Terreur en Maine-et-Loire." Paris 4, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA040090.

Full text
Abstract:
At first, the subject is considered in its origin : considering the decisions to be taken by local authorities (in connection with those of the national Assembly) and, in particular, those of the department directory, between july 1790 and march 1793, what can explain the rebellion against the call up of 300 000 men ? What rôle are then playing the missionned representatives and the new jurisdiction that they set up : military commissions and revolutionary committees ? Which place is then left to local authorities in managing affairs ? Next, from the exhaustive analysis of the miltary commissions archives, it remains to understand who are, between march 1793 to floreal of year II (may 1794), the victims of repression, their origin, geographical as well as social in particular, and their convictions ? How is repression organised, who is effecting arrests, procceding to interrogatories, passing sentences and carrying out executions ? Is it possible to evaluate the effects of Terror in Maine-et-Loire ? Last, does Terror come out unforseably in the revolutionnary process or is it present, at least as a germ, since the establishment of new institutions ? Is it a skid or the very spirit of the revolutionnary process ?

Clark, Alan G. "Characteristics of trappers in Maine, 1976 to 1980." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45715.

Full text
Abstract:
Characteristics of Maine trappers were investigated by monitoring license buying behavior from 1976-1980 and by using a mail questionnaire after the trapping season in 1980. Trapping license sales increased 56% during the 5-year study period. From 37-41% of individuals who first purchased a license during this time period did not purchase one the next year. Most individuals who purchased a second license continued to purchase one. Through the questionnaire, individuals described attitudes, behaviors, and preferences. A disproportionately large number of individuals who claimed to be professional or semi-professional trappers attended public hearings. Although money received for fur pelts is important, the most common reason given for trapping was the challenge involved. Fall land trapping was the most preferred type of trapping and the one in which most trappers participated. Fox was the most preferred upland species and muskrat was the most preferred aquatic species. Detailed information was obtained from individuals who trapped in the fall. Effort per day of season was estimated in both trapper-days and average trap-nights. The problems rated highest by trappers in Maine involved people. Top-rated objectives of trappers were maintaining animal populations in proper balance with carrying capacity and maximizing pelt primeness. When presented with regulation options, respondents rated a species bag limit per trapper as the most acceptable option even though this regulation has been opposed consistently at public hearings. Information on trappers, animals, and harvests is combined into a Management system.

This work is an investigation of the sense and spirit of a place, notably the urban waterfront setting. It is an exploration of the physical and built characteristics of the setting, and how these attributes can be brought forth in a design project located on the waterfront of Portland, Maine. Five waterfront settings have been chosen for observational studies. They share certain location and physical similarities, but they each have specific characteristics that evoke a certain expression of place. These attitudes will be expressed during the design process. The purpose of this thesis is to present my attitude toward the assemblage of building and landscape forms. This process of assembly and design as the project responds to the contextual and programmatic requirements is the major emphasis of this thesis. This process will begin to delineate a design-vocabulary, lessons learned from observations of a specific place, and scruples toward the modern era we live in.

Abstract:
The philosophy by Maine de Biran, starting from the problem of human intelligence, founded finally religion properly so called. Our study tried to throw light on how the biranian thought, after having discovered the mainspring of the thought in the conscious activity, extended to the religious knowing while remaining exact to this principle apprehended as the base for all knowing. And we have concluded at least that for this extending, his thought must have accepted in itself the passive sensibility after being excluded as having no part with intelligence, in such a way that these two factors that constitute the entire man, active factor and passive factor, have an effect upon each other in order to prepare him to be able to receive grace, divine help, who one and only completes him as a soul ; and that the possible foundation of religion by philosophy consists in such a participation of these natural elements to supernatural

La pauvreté dans les pays riches ne peut être totalement comprise sans la prise en compte de la dimension spatiale. Poverty in rich countries can't be understood without taking into consideration the spatial dimension. That contributes to reveal all that is hidden by the discourses that usually give the poverty the first place in actuality. The local approach of this subject in the Mayenne and the Sarthe shows that poverty which may be passed from one generation to the next can't be separated from the inegalitarian process which are set in the spatial spaces.
